Daily Updates
Tasha, Shadow?s Clan, Gulls - UPDATE July 10, 2016
11 July 2016
Print Email
Tasha had some watermelon and other private treats, including a shower, on this day that got up to 77.7F?. Ted spent time in his tub. Lucky digging in den
Lucky's nose dirty from digging
Lucky was covered with dirt after digging in the rock den today, making us wonder if he has plans for this den. He spent a winter snuggled against Honey in that den some years back. Will he do the same with Holly? I?m imagining a Den Cam.

Lucky and Holly
Lucky and Holly
Beyond the rock den, pileated woodpeckers are digging for larvae in good view from the viewing balcony as in this 3 minute 40 second video https://youtu.be/hF3yWFf0MIk and another at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qoWuUcFL1TQ

Staff and volunteers are adding the latest reproduction information to the page on Shadow?s Clan. So far, we know that RC has a male and 2 females, Jewel has 2 males and a female, Samantha has 2 males and 2 females, and Fern has 3 males. Summer, Sophie, and Vanna each has two cubs we?re still trying to see well enough to determine gender.Tasha getting a shower

Summer is down to 2 cubs after losing one to an unknown cause a couple weeks ago. We?re still waiting for Colleen to show up.

Out the window, the tame gull will peck on the window if I don?t come quickly enough with bologna. The semi-tame gull will sit by the window without pecking. Three others, including the lame gull, sit at the feeding spot but fly when I come out. They circle back repeatedly for bologna. The lame gull took too long with his turn but was able to fight off a challenge from a gull that tried to hurry him off.

This morning an adolescent male bear we call One-Dot tasted a piece of bologna but decided to leave it for the gulls. He preferred the food Lily Fans helped buy.

I came across a poem Dr. Steve Stringham wrote back in 1987. The last four verses rang a bell with me.

Is it this, I wonder,
this rapport beyond majesty and ferocity
intuition and intelligence,
which has bound me decade after decade
to the Great Bear and his kin?

For although I am a scientist,
I am also a seeker of stranger truths,

Who for year after year
has been thrilled and terrified,
fascinated and stupefied,
by this magnificent being.

Who while learning bear?s worldly ways,
has met ?minds within the skins of other kinds,?
and finally glimpsed Spirit Bear.

Tasha with watermelon   and with peanut butter log
Steve?s words made me think of break-through moments with bears along the way and how it has been to work with Gerry, June, Lily, and others. It made me think of being in the presence of gentle Jack and powerful Victor?and watching Victor grow from a lean, undersized 4-6-year-old in 2005 to what he is today. Last evening, he argued a bit with Drew but then just walked away without showing his power. The biggest males are often the most gentle.

Steve was the leader of the panel I was part of at the International Bear Conference in Anchorage last month. He has also formed the Bear Viewing Association and written books about bears. You can see more of his writings and other work at www.bear-viewing-in-alaska.info.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning jewelies! it is 74 here and weather man saying today will be 100 +. really hot and those big storms moving in now around midnight so girls be in tonight. hate to shut that back door with it so hot so i may have to stay awake later. calling for big hail big winds the whole deal. just like before when i lost my power. got old smokey in the garage. Lucky's nose looks like boo boo and houla digging in the yard. them two would make good bear dens. tasha getting hosed down just like i do the girls and sweets.

Hi JP! Great pic of bow! Royals have wade davis and herrera as pitchers in the all star course davis is on the disable list. too bad. he is the closer for sure. Savly perez will be there starting catcher and hosmer infielder will be there. no royals in the hrd. Hope you find out something thursday. I will be watching that game too tomorrow night.

Hi Obsver! I am going out there and mow after i get done posting this. i got everyone fed got up earlier so i could mow the pasture before the heat takes over. another day of hosing down. i need to go by petes and pick up some antibiotics for one of my moms cats and going to bargain spot to see if they have the secret lives of pets. sorry your mower died i know how that feels. those mice got my brand new one last summer but jim fixed it. hope it doesn't die with him gone. need to hit the dogs yard too jim mowed the rest sat. all the rain that is coming today is it.

That's cool about V-Dot and how he got his name.  Bet that pond felt great to play in.

It's hard to make a bed with even a cat on it.

Rues, the old bears are probably all beat up like old tom cats.  :)

Neat generator Cal!

Oh no RA's laptop took a dive?  Dang.  She must be going nuts.

JP that was nice about the horse.  David and Allen were great looking cubs.

Good old Jack.

Chiggers - someone mentioned putting nail polish over the chiggers and they suffocate.

Eaglette, I have mixed feelings on the two transmitters too.  I've always been all for them, but at the same time with the percentage of young that don't make it a year.................

Hi Observer and everyone I missed here.....

86 feels like 93.  :( Really humid.

I tripped at the end and fell to the side missing that hole in 5:53!

Hi Nora! I got the pastured mowed and did my chores went to Pete's got some more medicine from Missy went to bargain spot no secret lives of pet yet but got that new Tarzan one.  it is 88 here and the humidity is 54% feels like 95 and the wind is kicking up 15mph bringing on that storm for late tonight. that generator would look a whole neater on that cement pad and all hooked up!

HI eaglette. you know i was not for them transmitters at all. i did love to see where our diva went and really impressed that she loves the colder weather and went all the way up north there and how she came home for Christmas like only 10 miles from decorah. But when hers quit makes me sick she still must be wearing it. they should figure out how to put one on and when the life of that transmitter is over it falls off. some signal something.  now doing not only a male but brothers will be interesting to see where they go and if they stick together . but not at the cost of their lives. never for that. but had we not found out they were electrocuted could not of complained to the electric co and have them put a safety on all the power poles. i have called mine like 20 times asking that. a red tail hawk electrocuted at the transformer on the corner where our school house. i see scout or a tv on that pole i run them off of it. power co said they would come out and fix it but so far have not. will keep calling till they do.

Cal, what a great pic of Lucky and Holly! That's a keeper for sure! I've seen Molly's nose all dirty like Lucky's! She used to try to dig up ground moles! She doesn't do things like that any more. She doesn't even care about the birds at the feeders. Guess she is getting old.  :-\.  I hope there is a way for you to go see Juanita before it's too late. You would really hate it if you waited too long. That would be a nice visit for you and Juanita! Hoping that those storms heading your way aren't bad ones and that your power stays on! Wish that generator was hooked up!  We may get some rain on Thursday and Friday. It's hot and yucky out today. Oh, my garden gloves and washing off as soon as I came inside, didn't work! This morning I woke up to poison ivy on my arms! One spot is driving me crazy! Lol! Last night we went to Red Lobster because Crow was dying for sea food ( gag!). Our waitress said she was having a bad day and told us all the things that had happened to her on Saturday. Then she spilled long grain rice in my lap!  :o She apologized and said she was giving us each a piece of key lime pie free of charge! Lol! The pie was good!

Jp, thank you for the pretty Monday greeting! Do they still have circus freak shows? I've only been to one circus in my life. I thought it had too many things going on at once. Glad they retired all the elephants.

Nora, like you, I have mixed feelings about the transmitters.

Eaglette, enjoyed your post! Those riots must have been a terrible thing to go through. I saw them on the news but really didn't understand them. In my little neck of the woods we are so isolated from the big city problems.

Obsver, how are you liking Costco? I saw something on the news about Costco but I wasn't paying attention to what they were talking about! I was at Sam's twice last week! Bought a big package of toilet paper. Got home and found that I already had another one! Lol! I won't need to buy any of that for awhile! Lol! I need to make lists when I go there! You and Mr O are 10 years ahead of me and Crow!

Hi Rues! just read your post! i just yelled at calihoula and boo boo. playing hard in the house all the time. by the time boo boo gets old and knocks it off he will be gone probably. i hope not but man sure would be nice if them two knocked it off. it is like an oven here. let the elite out front and the house faces the west and all the sun on it. boys hurried up and peed and pooped ran fast across the sidewalk and back in. i laughed at your gag red lobster you know it is gag city for me too. never eat there. jim says that to me all the time you better go see that indian woman juanita jim well you better go see her. her husband merle retired from the navy. he smoked and drank some i think not sure on that but smoking yes. he has been gone for along time. she retired from working in the school cafeteria.  wow not only did the waitress tell you her woes but spilled stuff on your lap!!  it funny now right and you got free pie!! free!! i went to the circus when i was kid and did not like it. thought mistreated all them animals very happy for the elephants. never liked the rodeo either. love horse shows. i was filling up the water tank and put my hand down in the tank i had the sprayer on and makes the water really move soda loves to drink moving water but boy that and the heat bumps popped up more on my hand and my neck. i came in and put a ton of calamin lotion on it. i hope i don't have to see the dr. if it moves some place new either see the dr or start myself on steriods. i am sick of poison ivy heat storms. now i am telling you my woes!! once as a kid we went to the mo state fair. which was far away cause we lived in kansas and they had a freak show i felt bad and did not want to look at them anymore. i know they needed the money probably to live off of but i did not want to look no more.

HI Ra! oh i got chores too do!!

Daily Updates
Big Harry is Back - UPDATE July 11, 2016
12 July 2016
Print Email
I heard the excitement in Mike?s voice. ?Big Harry is back. Look at the way he?s walking. It?s Big Harry.? Mike remembers details of the many bears he loves?something about how they walk, Big Harry
Big Harry
a sway to the back, a tiny scar, a notch in the ear, and (Like Lorie) the look in their eyes. Some have sad faces, some look intense. I snapped three quick pictures. The first looked intense as Harry responded to a noise I made. Mike said, ?Not necessarily, Harry just looks like that. He and Lorie know these bears perhaps better than anyone.

Then Samantha showed up and kept looking back at a big white pine that probably held her four cubs. Samantha (Braveheart?s daughter from 2009) looks like Jewel (June?s daughter from the same year) except for the notch in Samantha?s right ear. Samantha was happy with my raw unsalted peanuts until she saw Lorie the pecan lady behind me. Samantha immediately went around me and found she was right. The photo shows her telling another bear to stay back.

Big Harry
Big Harry
Big Harry goes way back. He was already big when we saw him in early 2003. I wouldn?t be surprised if he was 10 by then, which would make him 23 now. He is wary, even here, until he knows who a person is and what he or she is up to. Then he is cautious but gentle but not a bear that likes touching.

The first Black Bear Field Course starts on Sunday. Participants will get to know the personalities and quirks of each bear.

Samantha
Samantha
At another feeding station, Vanna brought her cubs in for a good look by the landowner?a male and a female. The landowner loved Dot, Vanna?s mother, and was crushed when the DNR wrongly put a kill order out for her based on a misidentification which Sue and I proved to be just that. The DNR Wildlife Manager ignored our data and later said in court that he figured it was just a lie. The landowner immediately named the female cub Dottie. A few hours later, she decided on the name Dobie for the male.

Occasionally, we hear of good Lily Fans translating these updates into other languages in various countries. I don?t know if this is on an ongoing basis or just occasionally. In any case, it is much appreciated. A couple days ago, we heard of one being translated into Slovak language.

At the Bear Center, Tasha and Holly were nose to nose through the fence, and I couldn?t tell from the video if they were playful or antagonistic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-I86mK-SF9M

Thank you for all you do.

Today I give you Mike.

Wow, cal,  you are an early girlie today.  Great pix of Big Harry and Samantha.I hope that storm does not hit hard and all of your critters are all right.   Isn't that what Ellie May's animals were called in the Beverly Hillbillies?

Yes, Giancarlo Stanton was in the groove last night.  He has been in a terrible slump and is only batting around 200.  He and the team hope he is breaking out of it for the second half drive.

I'm without any medical appointments today so I am going to take things as easy as possible, maybe work some on my music project and try to further ease this nasty pain.

My thoughts are out to all  of you for a good Tuesday,

Oh Rues not you too with poison ivy.  I really need to look up what it looks like.  I can't believe trail riding with the horse and walking into stuff when not on her and other places I've never walked through it, especially places that are known for it.  Maybe I'm one of the lucky ones.  My sister and her first husband got into some one time and she didn't have any reaction and he was so sick he almost landed in the hospital.  I think I'll do some searching when I get done there while I'm thinking about it.

Transmitters -- they don't cause the injury or death, it's just we know instead of wondering how they are.  Sometimes it's nice not to have any confirmation.  In a lot of ways they are good.

78, kind of sticky, and sunny.  I enjoyed it a lot more this morning when it was cloudy, it really held the heat down.  Did have a storm come through last night and got 8/10 of an inch of rain, but nothing severe as far as hail, etc.  There was LOTS of lightning though.  We'll see how today progresses.  The power did go out, but only for about a minute.

I was to the circus twice in MN years ago, once when in grade school and once as an adult when a certain person and I took his two grandkids.  It was at a big place in St. Paul and you just sat and watched the acts in the rings, not like going to a fair and having other stuff to see/do.  I suppose the building would have been like a giant tent with three rings.  I didn't care for it.  Mom (who did clowning in her later years) said "but you had the clowns to watch!"  Never liked clowns or TV shows where people did dumb klutzy stuff, I do enough klutzy stuff myself.  When we took those grandkids he had to keep the youngest one in his seat because he wanted to go here or there and I had the older one leaning on me sleeping through most of it.

Big Harry looked all wet  :)  Neat bear.  Samantha did too.

I look at Chester's paws and all I can think of is miniature bear paws.  :D

Yipee on Rose, Cal!!  Good to hear her foot is doing so much better!

I do believe the Hillbillies did call the animals critters JP.  I have a tendency to do that too sometimes when it involves more than one kind of animal.  :D  Do they have any idea yet what is causing your pain?  Or is this your back today.

That sneaky dog got me in 5:49!

HI JP! I woke up again at 3:30 am and got up. All star tonight! salvy will start and hosmer will start 1st base salvy of course catcher. that johnny cueto starting pitcher he is with the giants now. Herrera relief pitcher and sadly wade Davis disable. i was hoping to see him when we go to the game next week but i counted the days and he goes of disable list the next day. isn't that sad. that storm did not cause me to lose my power i think that huge wind was below me or above. got some wind tons of rain and lighting but not like the wind when i did lose my power.now they say a bigger one tonight. scattered thunder storms at 7 pm and then the big one at 9 pm straight line winds if i get that will lose more than my power so hoping it stays down south some like at sisters. told her to high tail it up here when she gets off at 7 do not stop for gas or anything just come here cause they said storms will last till 5 am. my rural highway will be closed. went to walmart in excelsior this morning and that crooked river is high! but when you cross over that bridge then the road is real low and the land on either side fills up like a pond and goes over the road road closed crooked river comes out really flooded! so i don't think she will be able to go that way in the morning and i think 13 be shut down too. i stocked up on dog food cat food bird seed horse feed cat litter. i tell you these animals sending me to the poor house. those kittens eat a ton! jumping on my back sinking those little claws in. wanting to play. mom cat she goes out in my bedroom and she popped them meanie boys! those meanie all big and black they were like say what...addie she growls and hides from them she is alot bigger than mom cat i say addie do like mom cat. quit letting them meanie boys get to you! one of them meaner he ran into my bathroom and the kittens ran up to him to see who is this and he ran back out!! lol..anyway tonight i am afraid of the storms. oh shoot jp tons of rain and my directv is out. looking for satelite signal. shoot no all star game might have to listen to it on sister radio.  yes ellie may had critters but her dad was shooting for some food and up through the ground came a bubbling crude. Oil! Black gold texas tea and they moved to beverly. hills that is swimming pools movie stars!

Hi Rues! gas today was 1.96. i was reading my time magazine earlier got a stack of them and get them cause i like reading them so i was reading the newest one and had an article about shrinking states. on the side. saw west virginia. scanned it off.

Hi Jewelies!  :)

The storms woke me up this morning. They were really noisy with the heavy rain and thunder. It was very windy and later on when I got up there were lots of little limbs laying around. My Directv may have gone out during the storm but everything was fine when I got up. The electricity never did go out.

Went to the doctor yesterday and got an iron infusion. I'll go back next Monday and get another one. It takes about a month for it to completely work and restore my iron levels, but I actually feel a little better today. Not so out of breath.

This is a beautiful video by a storm chaser. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikezauFFe0w

I need to get some groceries ordered so I can have them delivered on Friday.

Forgot this little pic of Bei Bei sound asleep earlier this evening. What a doll!

Hi to JP, Ra, Rues, Obsver, Cal, Willi, Eaglette, Deb, Nora, Neva, Pat, Chippy and all who visit here and everyone I forgot. Have a restful night.  :)
