With the mating season winding down, more bears are coming in. A young male, maybe 3 or 4 years old, that visited today apparently had enough testosterone to enter the fray Geneva

and incur some scars this year. He didn?t turn his head enough for a picture that shows it, but the left side of his head has many scars that his shedding face is revealing. I can?t say for sure who he is, but the notch in his left ear, a split in his right ear, a white dot on the bridge of his nose, and an overall dark face might give the team some clues if they aren?t all fresh. His face has shed up to the crown of his head where there are longer hairs between his ears.

Tasha, from Kentucky has shed more. Her picture from today shows brown hair being shed and new black hair on her head and legs.
When yearling Tasha sees food and wants it immediately, she loudly bawls in a lower voice than 3-year-old Holly does.

Last night the assistant bookkeeper, here for her monthly bout of work, got little sleep. Bears kept coming through the night while she tried to record their weights and identities. Shadow, Braveheart, Lily, and Bow were among them in addition to several males. At 4 AM, she had to sleep no matter what was going on. It?s been the same for some of the participants in the Black Bear Field Courses over the years and probably in the courses that start in a little over 3 weeks.
Little Spanky waited until there was less competition to show. We hadn?t seen him here before with his very light muzzle that extends up between his eyes with brown continuing up and around each eye. He has the cautious and uncertain personality of his 29-year-old mother Shadow.

A special delight was seeing Braveheart?s 108-pound yearling Geneva this evening. She trusted people here in this safe place (heart rate about 100) but was disturbed by the shrill calls of loons from the lakes on both side of us. When she rose up to focus on those sounds, she was too close for the lens I had. All I could get was part of her face, but it shows her ears forward and the intensity of her eyes. I would have thought loon calls were old hat for her. What a sweet bear.
