Today the interns started the day with feeding the fish in the big 660-gallon aquarium in the Northwoods Ecology Hall. The weekly feeding always draws a crowd.Tasha

Ted returns from his big trip

Ted returns from his trip
Sharon Herrell posted her weekly report on the Bear Center bears.
The big news today is Ted walked all the way up to the far side of the enclosure to inspect the tree that was taken down yesterday. We were very surprised to see him make the long trek. On his journey he stopped by to pay a visit to Tasha. All the while Ted was making his nice friendly grunting sounds. Tasha was not sure what to make of Ted, she immediately responded by climbing to safety, which is exactly what a young bear in the wild would do. As time goes on, we expect Tasha to be more accepting of Ted?s gentle nature and recognize his friendly grunts.

Ted is showing us that he still wants his presence and scent known to Lucky and the two female bears he is living with. He marked two different trees in the big enclosure today.
Tasha had her first introduction to the news media yesterday. She was relaxed and her introduction went well. We expect her to be in quarantine until early July depending on how she progresses. She is relaxing more and enjoying some spontaneous visits from Holly. Lucky in the cabin den

We see progress every day. This morning Tasha enjoyed an orange. Ted, Lucky and Holly do not eat oranges (or any citrus) but it seems to be a favorite with Tasha.
Holly is still in estrus and Lucky?s interest in her continues but never rule out Ted.

Meanwhile back at the "cabin" Lucky shows off his yoga moves once again. Our interns are getting great pictures of Lucky doing what bears do. With bears in the wild we seldom get to see their personalities and how important play is in their development as a cub and how they continue to grow.
Once again, stripping cedar trees inside the enclosure is on Lucky and Holly's list of bear duties. The oil in the cedar bark acts as a natural bug repellent for the bears. Bears in the wild often chew the bark for bedding in dens.
Fundraiser this SaturdayI'd like to invite you to tune in on Saturday as we celebrate the Half Birthday for the bears. Each bear will be given a pi?ata filled with their favorite treats. We continue to encourage our supporters to vote for which pi?ata each bear will receive. With your help the bears can have a variety of fruits & nuts during the summer.

Thank-you,
Sharon Herrell, Bear Curator
