At the Bear Center, the new bear is on everyone?s mind. Curator Sharon Herrell sent me a report saying,
?We are working with her but she does get anxious with the other 2 bears. Fern's cub

We moved the camera but the fencing is too close knit to get a good picture. We do not have enough cord to move it over to the open fence so it has to stay where it is for now. I did go in with her and made contact for about 1 minute. I will do it again as soon as we can this afternoon. While in with her I stroked her back and I will continue to do so to get her used to our touch and smells. She and Holly met and an interest peaked. Lucky appeared and it went sour but I'm sure as the week progresses Holly and Tasha will continue to meet through the fence. Our vet will be here tomorrow (Wednesday) to see her.?

Reports are that she paced frantically last evening but is calmer today. It was good to hear that she met Holly and wasn?t fearful like she was with Lucky. I didn?t realize until I saw the video today what made Tasha run out of her cage in such a panic. Lucky slapped the ground just outside the fence, and Tasha wanted more space between her and him. She ran and climbed the fence and stayed up there until people led Lucky out of sight. I remember her up on the fence moaning and clacking her teeth in fear. In the midst of that, she looked at me, a harmless human, and relaxed for a moment and then showed her nervousness again as she looked back toward Lucky. She ignored people. We are of no interest to her at this point. We mean nothing to her. She loves one man?the man who raised her. He called today and asked that we don?t change her name. We already noticed that she responds to her name. Some of the staff like that name and are already using it. They?ve convinced me. I guess we?ll skip the naming contest and just let her keep her name.

Bow and mate
The woods was alive today.
At 8 AM, Lily passed through less than a half mile from WRI, alone and uninterested in food. She?s apparently busy now in the height of mating season. She didn?t bother to stop by the WRI. I hope she finds Big Harry or Jack that we haven?t seen yet.
Ten-year-old Bow has a boyfriend I don?t recognize. He?s a little skittish, but she likes him. She follows him as much as he follows her.
I got a call from a friend who always invites the Black Bear Field Courses over. He gets a lot of bears. First, 7-year-old Jewel was nursing her three cubs, and then her daughter 4-year-old Fern and her 3 cubs put on a darling show. Exciting. I did a pretty thorough check of Jewel?s side where the hole was. I couldn?t find a trace of it by feeling for a scar. She healed well.
Wonderful day.
