"Nora... I thought Joe was rehabbing his shoulder already.  Sorry, I'm rushing him.  lol  I bet he IS tired of the sling by now."  That's ok, I think it's next Tuesday.  Believe me he's counting the days and I suppose the last 24 hours it will be hours until it comes off.  It doesn't help he had the cardiac rehab and then went right to the shoulder surgery, hard enough for ME to keep track of stuff.  :D

JP it sounds like you were fit at a fiddle when you posted this morning, although I don't know if you were still up late or up really early today!

"She must like animals if she works at the vet.  Hope Handsome doesn't hurt her...  lol"  I had a sister-in-law with one that statement applied too.  Fudd hated people.  How IS Handsome by the way?

Glad your new boots came Cal!!

Ted is this morning's bear.

Nora, I was in good spirit yesterday as you noted.  And the day turned out quite nice.  Nothing in particular, just a feeling good day.  I don't have many of those but they are appreciated.  This morning is a good one, also.

cal, I have never used jelly on a waffle but I religiously use it on French Toast.  I don't use just grape, I mix in strawberry and occasionally some orange marmalade.

Enjoy this Friday that we have in front of us.  Make the most of it.

Daily Updates
Holly, Fire, Bears Galore - UPDATE May 19, 2016
19 May 2016
Print Email
Holly?s popularity is spreading across the forest. A suitor was seen at the fence. Ted showed he still has some spark by marking a tree, presumably in her honor.Victor from 6/30/14 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WKjkERiIS7g Cubs with Ted?s disposition? Could be worse.

With suitors coming around, Lucky probably felt very lucky that he had Holly all to himself in their den to play with and cuddle with just like they were hibernating again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6jlktoIKqEY.

Billowing smoke and sounds of helicopters and airplanes meant a fire was close. It was actually 4-5 miles away and moving northerly (away). We took a picture from a couple miles away. The fire is a U. S. Forest Service controlled burn that got out of control. Radio-collared bears have denned in the area of the fire. I hope mothers with cubs can get out of the path instead of feeling they have to escape up trees.

On the bright side, reports of returning bears are flooding in. Reports include:

11-year-old Shannon (daughter of Donna) and her 3 yearlings (Blaze, Banner & Glory)
3-year-old Misty (daughter of Shannon)
7-year-old Star and her 3 yearlings (Vianna, Vixen, & Vonnie)
7-year-Summer who has cubs that haven?t been seen yet

Fire near Ely     Juneberry blossoms    Birch leaves
Where females gather this time of year, males are not far behind. Old scarred-up Victor is asserting his dominance over other males. He used to be one of the most handsome bears in the area.

We?re waiting for other returnees to show. This is an exciting time of year.

I?m looking forward to the experiences we will have in the Black Bear Field Courses. I thank our legislator friends for doing the right thing on the feeding legislation a couple days ago. They saw through what was happening.

Goldfinch    Lactating squirrel    Mallard in dawn light
Outside the window, the brave crow is back, the gull continues to improve, goldfinches are regular visitors, and a first-year male red-winged blackbird has arrived. Ruby-throated hummingbirds are doing their mating dance. A brave hummingbird went after a crow and made it dodge. Blue jays are mating. A lactating red squirrel is eating a lot of sunflower seeds to keep up with her accelerated metabolism.

Hazel bushes and birches are leafing out. It would be great to see a good crop of hazelnuts, probably the bears? favorite. Juneberry bushes and pincherries are in bloom. Red maple leaves are living up to their name as they emerge and enlarge.

Crow    Hazel leaves    Red-winged blackbird male (first year)
I?m getting a chance to educate on TV this coming Wednesday and Thursday, so there likely will not be updates those days.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi Jewelies!  Rainy, cool day here today.  Feels good!

blschue... I have trifocals, get the no glare coating, get thinner lenses (so they're not like a coke bottle), have astigmatism, etc.  The frames I have have magnetic sunglasses, that's why I want to keep them.  Very handy.  You have even worse vision than I do!  I was told a long time ago that without glasses, I'm legally blind.  I got my first glasses when I was in the 7th or 8th grade, then got contacts in the 9th grade.  I had to quit wearing contacts because they were screwing up the blood vessels in my eyeball.  I was very upset when I couldn't wear them anymore, I loved them!  That was 20 or so years ago.  I have had what looks like a floater, that doesn't float. in my right eye for a few months, and they said that's the hemorrhage.  That must be quite the sewing machine!!  I hope you have fun at the birthday party this weekend!

willi... Is that a new Nora Roberts book?  It sounds familiar...  I love her writing!

cal... It doesn't seem like a good time of year for a controlled burn, does it?  The wildlife have their babies now!  Bet the DNR had that bright idea...   >:(  Did you try on your new boots yet?  How do you like them?  Do they fit?  Are they wide enough for you?  lol... I have lots of questions, don't I?  lol  Good to hear about all the bears being seen this spring!  Victor still is a good looking bear!  A little beat up maybe...

JP... Laughed at your dancing Friday cat!  lol

Hope everyone has a good day!  Hi everyone!

Hi Jewelies! Bad day here! My little town of 10,000 residents is in a water crisis! Years ago DuPont, 12 miles down river from us, discharged a chemical called C8 into ground wells. C8 is used in the making of Teflon. Several years ago people down river from the plant sued the company for C8 contamination in their drinking water. The experts say that C8 may cause cancer and other health problems. So DuPont installed filtration systems in those water treatment facilities and constantly monitor those residents health. We get our water from 10 water wells unlike most areas that get their water from the river. Our C8 levels had been acceptable until yesterday when the EPA changed the standards and now they say our water is unacceptable to drink or cook with! Our mayor and city council are looking into installing filtration systems that will alleviate the problem! They also have tanker trucks distributing water at 3 parking lots around town. They are saying this is only an advisory not to drink the water. All the city schools were closed today and restaurants can only operate if the use another source of water! People are freaking out! What a mess. Our mayor is getting ready to have a news conference on tv so I'll be back later!
