Holly?s popularity is spreading across the forest. A suitor was seen at the fence. Ted showed he still has some spark by marking a tree, presumably in her honor.Victor from 6/30/14

With suitors coming around, Lucky probably felt very lucky that he had Holly all to himself in their den to play with and cuddle with just like they were hibernating again.

Billowing smoke and sounds of helicopters and airplanes meant a fire was close. It was actually 4-5 miles away and moving northerly (away). We took a picture from a couple miles away. The fire is a U. S. Forest Service controlled burn that got out of control. Radio-collared bears have denned in the area of the fire. I hope mothers with cubs can get out of the path instead of feeling they have to escape up trees.

On the bright side, reports of returning bears are flooding in. Reports include:
11-year-old Shannon (daughter of Donna) and her 3 yearlings (Blaze, Banner & Glory)
3-year-old Misty (daughter of Shannon)
7-year-old Star and her 3 yearlings (Vianna, Vixen, & Vonnie)
7-year-Summer who has cubs that haven?t been seen yet

Where females gather this time of year, males are not far behind. Old scarred-up Victor is asserting his dominance over other males. He used to be one of the most handsome bears in the area.
We?re waiting for other returnees to show. This is an exciting time of year.
I?m looking forward to the experiences we will have in the Black Bear Field Courses. I thank our legislator friends for doing the right thing on the feeding legislation a couple days ago. They saw through what was happening.

Outside the window, the brave crow is back, the gull continues to improve, goldfinches are regular visitors, and a first-year male red-winged blackbird has arrived. Ruby-throated hummingbirds are doing their mating dance. A brave hummingbird went after a crow and made it dodge. Blue jays are mating. A lactating red squirrel is eating a lot of sunflower seeds to keep up with her accelerated metabolism.
Hazel bushes and birches are leafing out. It would be great to see a good crop of hazelnuts, probably the bears? favorite. Juneberry bushes and pincherries are in bloom. Red maple leaves are living up to their name as they emerge and enlarge.

I?m getting a chance to educate on TV this coming Wednesday and Thursday, so there likely will not be updates those days.
Thank you for all you do.
