I did the puzzle in 4:01.  I was confused this morning but I got straightened out.  To balance, tomorrow, I will say "Happy Monday"  in my post.

Cal, yep, I watched Downton on my new tv! It was amazing! I have been missing out on so much with that little tv! Lol!  You and Crow were for the same team. He enjoyed the game as well as the half time show. He really has a thing now for Lady Gaga after he watched her on some scary movie series. For some reason I can't remember the name of that series right now! It will come to me later. Anyway, he liked her singing and the others, too. Almost forgot to tell you this...Crow took Molly to the vet last Monday for her annual shots. They did what they call geriatric blood work on her and everything checked out great. Said she was a healthy dog except she has a back tooth that will need pulled eventually. Then Saturday morning she started hacking and gacking the most horrific cough! She has kennel cough! The vet asked if she had been boarded or at the dog park recently. No the only place she has been is the vet's ofc and back home. Of course it's contagious  so today Boo started with the cough. They are both on an antibiotic now. Have yours ever had kennel cough? Sounds horrible!  The little girl in the video is precious. Thanks for the video.

Jp, so funny you forgot Monday. We had a rainy Monday here...you know rainy days and Mondays always gets me down! Lol!

Obsver, that nasty weather is coming my way! Rain turning to snow flurries. They say could get 3 inches or more. Then a deep freeze by the weekend! Brrr. Crow is back to reading again since football is over. He read a book on his tablet but said he would rather read a real book. So he went to the library and got 2 books. He started to read one of them only to realize he had already read it. Opened up the second book and he had already read it, too! Lol! Now he has to go back tlo the library and find one he hasn't read! Lol!

Ra, did you have some good snacks last night? Did you watch the game at your house or at your daughter's?

Hi Nora!

This is Hope.

I am happy to be here but I feel less than good.  Just one of those days.

Good hopes and wishes to all.  May this day be better than normal for all of you.   I found this hanging around from another time,  Happy Monday!

Holly and Lucky - UPDATE February 8, 2016

Redpolls
Redpolls
Holly shows persistence, which some think is a good trait, but we?re on the fence on that one when it comes to messing with the camera that she discombobulated yesterday afternoon. Heidi got it going this morning but ice made it less than perfect. The IR light makes for better viewing during the day as well as at night. Good going, team. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8G4FXiKgpo

At midday, Holly clouded up the lens https://www.facebook.com/ toni.embree.50/videos/ o.139730642706794/1183256521706976 /?type=2&theater

But now, at 6:30 PM, it?s a clear picture again.

At one time today when Lucky and Holly were sleeping very still, Holly was breathing a little over twice a minute is all.

This half minute video from June 21, 2009 shows 4-month old Jewel or Jordan making a herculean effort to get into a birch stump. The cub must have smelled insects in it?probably ants. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ePhn0U4Ybc

When a flock of common redpolls (Acanthis flammea) takes over the sunflower seeds, they have strength in numbers. They are peaceable among themselves but aggressive toward chickadees (Poecile attricapillus). Chickadees have to wait their turns. A lone redpoll is also aggressive toward chickadees; but with just one redpoll, a chickadee will be more persistent. On the other hand, a hairy woodpecker (Picoides villosus), many times the size of a redpoll, can calmly peck on the suet near the suet while the redpolls stay back 10-12 inches.

Thank you for all you do.

Hi Jewelies!  Cold and windy here today... only up to 40o!  Supposed to be cold all week and even in the teens one morning!!  Brrr!!

cal... No, Handsome didn't get to watch the tree guys... he couldn't see them from where he was... UNDER THE BED!!  lol  When someone drives in the driveway, he growls and heads for the bedroom to hide!  lol  The guys chipped the brush as they went, then loaded the big logs onto a big truck and hauled them off.  Then he took his bobcat and smoothed the lane back out.  Loved the snowshoe hare in the update yesterday... so pretty!  For some reason, I've been having a hard time with the update's videos.  I've tried clicking, copy and paste, but nothing works.  Might be my laptop... it's going black a lot lately, then has to start up all over again.  Might have to get a new one... hope not... even though I've never liked the keyboard on this one.  I'm always hitting the wrong keys, my daughter has the same problem with it.

JP... Well... Is it Monday or Tuesday?  I'm confused...

rues... I always watch the big games by myself... don't want any chitchat while I'm watching.  I'm embarrassed for the Panthers QB... He acted like a baby after the game.  Poor sport.

obsver... Yup, I'm back on the Cheetos again.  The baked ones are my favorite now.  I got some tortilla chips and salsa at the store yesterday... you made me hungry for them!  lol

Hi to everyone!  Hope everyone is having a good day!

Happy Fat Tuesday Jewelies! Woke up to 5 1/2 inches of snow! Ugh.  It was only supposed to be a dusting but the weather guy said it got stuck over top us and just keep pouring it down. Surprisingly it wasn't to hard to shovel. More to come tonight. Yuck.

Cal, our previous vet used to give Molly the bordatella vaccine each year with her other shots. This vaccine protects them from kennel cough but a few years ago she quit. Crow never asked her why but I suspect it was because she knew Molly was no longer hunting and socializing with other dogs. But Boo still gets his bordatella vaccine. I still haven't heard him cough or gag so I think Crow heard Molly coughing and thought it was Boo. The vet said it was ok to give him the meds so he is getting it, too. I didn't realize that Houla was your only girl now! You two are certainly in the minority! You need some more girl power! :D Crow says he and Boo are over run with females in our family! :D Says they have to stick together! But Boo says no cause he is a Gramma's boy! :D. Molly will always limp the vet said because of the arthritis in her wrist and the problem in her toe pad. He said if she were a younger dog he would operate on the toe but seeing she is almost 12 he would rather not. One of her front toe pads is swollen and sometimes bleeds. Ex rays show up nothing. He said chances are the toe and pad would need to be removed. There's been some really nice pics in the update. The white bunny was so cute!  Just said on the news that the flu is rapidly spreading!  :o Glad we got our shots!

Jp, always enjoy your morning greeting and bear pic! Look forward to it each morning! Hoping you are having a nice warm day!

Hi Eaglette! Were you able to go back to sleep?

Hi Ra! Crow said a few bad words about the way the QB acted!  :o We have those cold temps coming, too. They are saying zero overnight Saturday! Brrrrr! Lol with Handsome hiding under the bed! Cats are such scaredy cats!

cal... I'm in shock!  I didn't know you exercise, too!!  I don't know how you do it!  You're busy all day long and STILL exercise??  Geez... Makes me feel like a lazy bones... big time!  lol  Maybe I need to get out my elliptical...  You misunderstood... MY laptop is hard to type on for me AND my daughter.  Something is just off with it.  I've been typing for like 50 years and have so much trouble with this thing.  The keys aren't aligned right or something.  I think the tree guy does sell the big logs... might as well, I didn't want them.  Panther QB was on the news tonight... said he's not going to apologize for his actions.  He's made it clear before that he is a poor sport and people shouldn't be surprised.  He plays to win, not lose.  If you're happy to lose, then you're a loser.  Pretty outspoken, isn't he?  lol

Braveheart and one of her cubs several years ago.

I have to pay a visit to the vampire this morning for a semiannual blood letting.  You would think that after all these years I would be used to it but I really do not like needles.

I looked at the calendar and verified that it is Wednesday so I do wish all of you a pleasant "Hump" Day.  Weeks fly by so fast.

Waking Up Den Mates - White Pines UPDATE February 9, 2016

White pines mist
White pines mist
In this 2-minute video from January 24, 2014, Holly?s den mate, Vinny the Vole approached Holly from the den doorway, retreats and then circles around and approaches her from the other way. Holly is snuggled deep into the straw. Two nights prior, the temperature dropped to minus 34?F. Vinny jumped on Holly and Holly jumped up like I?ve never seen before. Then, in fast motion, Holly rearranges her bed and settles back down into the deep straw. It was nearly 9 PM and the temperature was below zero. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VC8DqUiKygg

In this 14-minute video from March 1, 2011, 4-year-old Lucky tests Ted?s patience by repeatedly poking him with a stick in the den. Linda Gibson interprets with her cute captions. Funny. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0U70V5UonU

This 1 minute 41 second video from Juliet?s den on April 20, 2014 shows something I wasn?t aware of. A new animal to add to the list of den inhabitants. It?s a blue-spotted salamander (Ambystoma laterale) on the move. The high for the day was 49?F. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IrxsoyrAIE

This year is the 20th anniversary of the 1996 white pine victory after a US Forest Service/MN DNR nightmare worse than what the DNR has been doing the last few years. I revisited the 1990?s while putting together some history for something coming up.

The USFS offered to return my white pine data, pay my outstanding legal bills, wipe my record clean (expunge it), and give me full early retirement. In return, I could not sue the USFS or reveal details of the USFS investigation to the press. It was a hard decision for me. The USFS and DNR had ruined my bear study and had spent over a year blackening my name to the press. If I accepted, I couldn?t reveal their misdeeds and clear my name. I knew I could prove their dishonesty in court and could probably recover all that I?d spent on the case and more. My attorneys believed I could win in court but said it would be prohibitively expensive, and it is always risky to contest the government. I decided to accept the USFS offer and move forward on projects that would let my work speak for itself. I retired on November 21, 1993, a little over 21 months after the case began on February 18, 1992.

I immediately moved forward on three fronts: (1) Sustainable management of Minnesota?s white pines, (2) Creating the North American Bear Center for public education about bears, and (3) Continuing bear research.

1. To work for sustainable management of Minnesota?s white pines, I formed the White Pines Society (www.whitepines.org). Eighteen local or national environmental organizations that are listed in the credits of the award-winning video ?Minnesota?s White Pines: Our Vanishing Heritage? soon joined in support. Together, we found strong support from the media, the public, scientists, and legislators. With that support, we brought white pine management issues to a head in early 1996:

On February 6, 1996, the Minneapolis Star Tribune featured my white pine data in a full-page article ?Keeper of the Pines.?
On February 8, 1996, the same newspaper wrote an editorial ?Our perspective: White Pine: Stop the cutting, save the remains.?
In the legislature, Representative Willard Munger introduced the ?Restore the White Pine Act.? In nearly passing, it got the attention of DNR foresters.
DNR forestry officials sat down with a coalition of white pine advocates and agreed to nearly all my proposals for (1) planting and protecting white pines, (2) conducting research toward sustainable management, and (3) sparing nearly all white pines on public land until we develop a sustainable management plan.
The governor budgeted a million dollars for white pine regeneration and research.
On April 16, 1996, Minnesota?s Wilderness and Parks Coalition selected me as an ?Environmental Hero? because (as stated in the Minneapolis Star Tribune) I ?crusaded to preserve and regenerate Minnesota?s depleted white pine forests.?
That year (1996), white pine management changed drastically and permanently at federal, state, and county levels. White pines would no longer be systematically eliminated to provide short-term benefits for a few. Where there is logging on public land, white pines would be left standing. They are actively regenerated to provide wildlife habitat, seeds for the future, and an important and beautiful part of our public forests for generations to come.
2. Upon retiring, I immediately began working to create the North American Bear Center (NABC) that opened in 2007. The mission of the non-profit North American Bear Center is to advance the long-term survival of bears worldwide by replacing misconceptions with scientific facts about bears, their role in ecosystems, and their relations with humans.

3. Upon retiring, I built the Wildlife Research Institute?s Northwoods Research Center and began a long-term study (1996-present) of black bears around a community that coexists with bears and has fewer problems than any comparable community I know. To assess the effects of community feeding on the bears I compare their behavior, ecology, and reproductive success with data from my earlier study (1969-1992).

Thank you for all you do.

Lynn Rogers, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center
