A nice picture of Jewel.

The weather is good here but not so good for many of you I fear.  The Decorah nest is getting it good with lots of snow this morning.  I guess this gives us an idea of what Nora has on her plate.  I am so fortunate to be in a snow free area.  I left all that when I left Rochester, NY in 1971.

My 92 year old body is giving me some movement problems this morning.  If it is a sunny day I may go down by the ocean and sit awhile, soaking up the sun..  While I am doing that I will send gentle, warm thoughts to all of you.

Ted, Entryway - UPDATE February 2, 2016

Polar Bear - WRI file photoTed and Honey are quietly passing the winter content in their own dens while Lucky and Holly are more active with their snuggling and playtimes.

Honey
Honey
Off site, workers are expertly hewing logs for the new entryway as part of the Bear Center?s extreme makeover. Also off site, Scott Edgett?s friend Don Taylor is building exhibit platforms to replace the old carpeted panels. What a difference that will make! Up front in the Bear Center, Scott and the staff went crazy with the front counter where people come in. Ted
Ted
They split it in two so people come in one way, go out through the retail store, and exit between the separated parts of the counter. With this Go Get ?Em staff, frugal change is the order of the day. I?m very excited. It?s going to turn out beautifully. I look forward to Lily Fans seeing all the changes this summer and to the LilyPad Picnic which is July 22-24, 2016.

The polar bear is a candidate for the Upper Wall. It was on the tundra around Halloween in October 1982 when bears gather near Churchill to wait for ice to form so they can hunt seals. Polar bears are the most carnivorous of the bears and are reputed to stalk people. However, biologists who spend time among them in areas where they gather to eat beached whale carcasses or are waiting for ice to form say the bears don?t like to take risks that could leave them injured and unable to hunt seals.

Progress on the
entryway at
the NABC

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning Jewelies! It rained all night but still in the 60's until tomorrow when it's back to the 30's. Yesterday our French Creek Freddie ground hog saw his  shadow! You know what that means! Lol! I've been a little under the weather the last 2 days. Stomach pains and a headache. My stomach is so sore. Don't know if it's a stomach virus or what. I just want to sleep all the time.

Cal, around here if you don't show up to jury duty the judge sends a deputy out to get you! My sis has a scanner turned on all day long listening to police and fire calls. She said last week that the circuit court judge had deputies going all over the county looking for no shows! I've been called 2 times. The first was right after Robin was born. I was excused because I was a nursing mother. The second time I was called in one time. We sat in a room for a couple hours waiting to go to court only to be dismissed because the guy took a plea deal. Never called me again. Our courthouse is downtown so it's not far at all. Crow wants to be on a jury but he has never been called! Robin says chances are that we will never be accepted on a jury now because we are related to her. Unless it's a federal jury where she doesn't have license. Speaking of Robin...she wrecked her new car in 5 o'clock traffic yesterday. It was bumper to bumper, stop and go traffic. The lady in front of her stopped, Robin didn't! There was little to no damage to the lady's car but everything plastic on the front of Robin's was smashed! The hood is bent and won't close. We'll know more about it after the adjuster looks at it. There goes her insurance rates!

Jp, I would love to come sit with you on the beach today! Might make me feel better! I've never had a MRI but I'm pretty sure I would go bonkers in it!

Ra, my brother had a all electric house once. I remember him talking about how high his bill was. My electric bill is $104 a month on the budget plan. I don't mind paying that bill because I feel that I'm getting my moneys worth with all the electric we use, especially in the summer with the AC and the pool pump. Now my natural gas bill is another story. It's $50 on the monthly budget plan because we keep the house at 68. And I'm always cold!  I don't know how much it would go up if I would crank up the thermostat!  Lol with Handsome and showers! My floors and trim are all red oak!

Eaglette, I so enjoyed reading about your family! Are you close to the ocean? When Robin was living in Huntington Beach for one year we visited her in the fall and at Christmas. Each visit we went to the beach. I was surprised at how cold the water was! I was use to the warm summer waters of the Atlantic!

Obsver, you eat the healthiest food! I wish I had that will power! I'm stuck on junk food!

Blschue, hope everything works out for your granddaughter and her new apartment!

Nora, hope the snow has stopped by now! Stay safe!

Rues, hope you are feeling much better. I'm glad you could just rest and recover. That's unfortunate about Robin's accident. Thank goodness she wasn't hurt, though! Cal, I'd be very surprised if you were not able to get out of jury duty. Just get all your stuff turned in quickly. I'm wondering if your doc. could fax a letter to their office. Are you ever able to get in little short naps during the day to rest up from all your heavy chores? We always  want you to feel good and be safe. Ra, yes, electric heat is more expensive. Have you ever looked into how much converting to another system would be? Probably be pretty steep, I imagine. Bischue, I've been reading about the snow in Minnesota. No wonder bears hibernate! Eaglette, one of my daughters lived in San Francisco for a few years, so we were able to see a little bit of northern California. Sitting by the ocean sounds very restful. Do you do that very much, jp?

Hi Jewelies!  Rainy day here, but pretty warm... for winter.  lol  Sun will be back again for the rest of the weekend.  The tree guy is coming tomorrow to take out blschue's trees.  It rained a lot today, hope they don't get stuck with their big equipment.

obsver... When I moved here, I decided that I was going to go all electric so I didn't have to worry about LP gas levels and leaks and all that kind of stuff.  I won't even get a kerosene heater, because I don't want to worry about filling the tank, etc.  We don't have natural gas in my neighborhood, so that wasn't an option either.   Tonight was Mexican night... again.  lol

cal... I hope you get your paperwork tomorrow, so you can get it back to them and can stop worrying about this stupid court thing.  They need to make a note in your records that your hearing issue is PERMANENT!!  And, not bother you again.  Hope you and Polly got to play your game today!  I'm rooting for  the Carolina Panthers to win the Super Bowl.  Honey looks as big as Ted in those pics today in the update!  I wish they would have explained what they were doing with the wood, don't you?

rues... How awful for Robin to wreck her car, but glad she's ok.  Sorry to hear you've been under the weather and but it's good you're feeling better.  Kind of sounds like what I had last month.  Your floors and trim are red oak?  lol  Just don't burn them in the fireplace... it stinks.  lol  Or, maybe it stinks when it hasn't had time to cure after it is cut.  We used to have a wood burning stove at the house and the ex would burn the red oak when he couldn't find white oak.  It was awful smelly!  Did you see Bao Bao on the news again tonight?  Such a cute thing!

JP... Can you sit on the beach a few extra minutes for me?  I LOVE sitting on the beach!  Maybe this summer...

blschue... Sounds like a lot of snow to me!  Glad the sun came out today.  I have to admit... the sun on fresh snow really is pretty.

Nora... Did you get as much snow as blschue?  Yes, be careful shoveling.  Your neighbors help you out?

Eaglette... Thanks for telling us a little about your parents!  Do they live near you?  We had thunderstorms this morning and I thought of you and your post to us...

Time to sit back and put my feet up.  Hope everyone is doing good... hi to all!

Colleen and Cookie.

Yesterday was a beautiful February day here and today should be, too.  Maybe a few more clouds.  I wish nothing but good weather and high spirits for all.

Honey - UPDATE February 3, 2016

Honey

Honey made an appearance today, eating snow and raking, as captured by a Lily Fan in this 12-minute video https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=549fekJIoZY& feature=youtu.be.

Back on May 4, 2009, June?s cubs Jewel and Jordan were practicing their high-wire act on the relative safety of a low cedar branch in this 1-minute video. The strength and control of healthy young cubs is amazing! Entry way trusses

Cedars have strong bark that is easy for cubs to grip. https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=EDBsGKNWasw.

At the Log-Building site less than a mile down the highway from the Bear Center, they have the first truss done for the Bear Center entryway.

Thank you for all you do.

Rues, glad the accident wasn't worse that Robin was in!  I really don't understand having plastic bumpers and lots more on cars now days.  Is it really cheaper when they crack and break all the time?  I don't feel real secure in a vehicle with a lot of plastic either.

The Appalachian Bear Rescue at Townsend, Tennessee lost little Star Bear.  She was the cutest little gal and so little....

ABR Update-Feb 4, 2016-Sad News about Star Bear
It?s with sadness we inform you that Star Bear has died in her Wild Enclosure. There was no evidence of a fall or any external injuries. Star had made a daybed on the ground, went to sleep and never woke up. The curators took her to The University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine for a necropsy that we hope will establish the cause of death. Star Bear arrived at ABR on January 18, 2016 weighing 18.1 pounds. She was eating well, climbing well and gave no indication there was anything wrong. We?ll post the results of the necropsy as soon as we get them.
Losing a bear never gets easier; the loss of Star hurts. We know you?re as invested in the welfare of our rescued yearlings as we are, and share our sorrow. Thank you for that.

Hi Jewelies!  Turned out to be a nice day here, sunny and warm.  It started out cold and damp, so it was a real treat to have it turn out good.  The tree guys dropped the first of their equipment at 8am today, came back at 9am, then the rest of the crew came at 10am.  So much equipment!  Interesting day... watching how they do everything.  It all looks so different!  Now, I won't have to worry about them falling on my house and I won't have any oak leaves in the back yard!  Yay!

Nora... That sure was a sad story.

cal... Can't believe you didn't get your paper today.  Slackers!  I agree on the close game comment.  It would be nice if Carolina wins, but no big deal... not a fan of theirs like I am Clemson.

JP... Did you feel better after sitting on the beach yesterday?

Quiet day here at Jewels.  Looking forward to Blacklist tonight.  Hope everyone is doing good and has a nice evening... hi to everyone!

Hey Cal, can you get the questionaire on line?  I think we can up here in our county.

I ran across this today and just had to share it :)

Did you go to the beach JP?

RA I'm not overdoing.  A couple up the street that we're good friends with got a new snowblower and Mark is having fun with it, so on his way past to do his son, Corey's, that lives a couple houses down the other way from us, he swung in and did the front walk.  We have neighbor down that way plow the driveway because of how the garage is situated, to I don't need to worry about that.

Hello Jewelies!  Thanks for the entertainment in reading your chats!

Nora, sad about Star, thanks though for sharing that information.  I saw the nest all covered in snow and immediately thought of what you must be "enjoying" in the midwest.  Have joy in the knowledge that you will be receiving very warm temperatures in less than one week.  Our weekend forecast is 80 F.

Cal, I am confident that you will get things all worked out with the court concerning your jury duty.  However, I must disagree with you about giving the power of a judicial system be dependent on only one person/Judge.  I like that we live in a society that gives one the  right to be judged by a jury of fellow citizens.  I don't think the Court will force you to serve.  You certainly have very valid objections to serving.  The most important of that is being deaf may cause you to miss critical information and therefore come to the wrong conclusion on a trial that you would be sitting on.  That is not to the benefit of the Defendant.  You might want to watch this video https://youtu.be/3NizLpfYHkA

Ra and Ruesgram, my folks live about 5.2 miles from me.  I walk to them for exercise sometimes.  We have many trails and some of them even overlook the ocean, so the walk to their house is rather pleasant.

Obsver, I used to go to the ocean several times a week when I was younger.  Once I had my oldest son, well let's just say that there were a few years there that it was no fun keeping him from trying to eat the sand.  Yes, I know that sounds a bit nutty, but the sand has all that sea salt on it and I guess some kids like salty things, ie pretzels, chips.  So by the time all the kids got older, going to the beach was really fun and then teenage-hood took over their hormones and they stopped coming with "family" to the beach.  I don't know if the kids would plan a beach day and have us all get together like they did many years ago.  That might be a fun thing to do.  But to answer your questions, no I do not go to the ocean often.  My folks house does overlook the Pacific though so whenever I am visiting them, I do get a beautiful view of the ocean.  We spend about one to two weeks per month together.  It is fun just the three of us.  I wish it would have been this fun to be with them when I was a teen.  I actually have cool parents and I feel so lucky to have them both still by me.

Blshue that is a lot of snow all at once to receive.  Was it all light or heavy wet for you?  I always disliked it when it was all wet for the first one or two inches and then it started to get lighter snow; just to freeze overnight under the white powder and create no fun the following day.  :D  I hope you keep safe with all that nasty weather.

Hi JP and everyone else too!!
