Lucky, Births, Den Cam Permit - UPDATE January 25, 2016

Lucky and Holly had switched places again as of yesterday evening. Lucky is near the camera where we can see him active for the first 5 ? minutes of this video. I?d like to think he was working on his foot pads, but I never could be entirely sure. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rKo4-d8TBk4

I suspect most of the bears we know have had their cubs by now. The dates of birth for the five litters we have watched on Den Cams were January 12, 21, and 22 for Lily, January 22 for Jewel, and January 23 for Juliet.

Donna called this afternoon to let me know we have a letter from the DNR responding to the Den Cam Permit application I submitted by email on November 5 and by snail mail on November 6 (2015). The letter says we indeed can place and maintain one Den Cam. I?m not sure why the DNR waited over two and a half months until after the birthing season to let me know. The conditions Donna read me were numerous. I?m going home early tonight to read the letter in detail and sleep on it. Tomorrow, I hope to get it scanned so we can put a link to it in the update so all can see it.

The picture shows a mother with a cub like we all want to see with a Den Cam. It brings back the old days for me. It?s Female number 359 who I caught and radio-collared when she was 3 in 1970. She held a territory in the middle of the old Isabella study area. She waited until age 7 (1974) to have her first cubs?unusually long. I visited her dens each winter and found her with litters in 1974 (2), 1977 (1), 1980 (3), 1982 (2), and 1985 (4 cubs, age 18). Taken March 30, 1985, the picture is one we?re considering for the upper wall in the Bear Center. Her late start in having cubs and the 3-year intervals between a couple of the litters were due to poor food years.

Thank you for all you do.

Jewel, Micah, Nate and Scott are so neat.  Wow that one bear he wrote about had FOUR cubs that one year?!!!!!!

Beautiful out today at 23 and sunny and we have several days coming in the 30's almst 40.  I'll take it.

Got a few inches of snow overnight, not sure just how much.  Neighbor plowed the driveway and I got the sidewalk shoveled off.  I allowed Joe to carefully sweep the porch that just had a "dusting" on it.  He was feeling useless while I shoveled.  :D

Now that darned "Tiptoe Through the Tulips" is going through my head in Tiny Tim's voice  :-\  Good puzzle though  :)

Cal, it's so good to have a nice laugh with a friend! Good thing Missy's mom lived close by! Wonder which den Dr Rogers will pick? And I also wonder why only one den cam? I think it's great that Tom has come back to Downton! The way things are going so far this season, it looks like the show will have a happy ending! I haven't looked at the puzzle yet but I remember Cheesh and Chong and that huge doobie!  :D

Jp, glad things are warming up for you!

Ra, our snow is melting, too! It warmed up to 49 and rained over night! A cool down tomorrow with light snow flurries and by the weekend near 60, wahoo! Glad I don't live near DC! Hope you are feeling better!

Obsver, I want to go with you to DC! I really enjoyed your post about your visit there! Crow and I toured Thomas Jefferson's home at Monticello when we went to Charlottesville, VA, to his family reunion. We also toured James Madison's Montpelier and James Monroe's Ash Lawn-Highland. We saw a celebrity at Monticello... Ted Koppel! Remember him the news anchor on Nightline?  I took a picture of him! He and I assume his wife got a private tour! Mount Vernon is another place on my Bucket List! That Bucket List just keeps growing! :D

Nora, Crow hates that he can't help me with chores like shoveling snow, too. We were hoping his hand would regain it's strength soon but now his doctor thinks there may be nerve damage.  :-\

Eaglette! I like Chet Atkins version of Tip toe much better! The tulips were so pretty!

Hi Jewelies!  Had to laugh at the Tiny Tim conversation... I haven't thought about him in a very long time!!  lol  Cheech and Chong, too!  Wasn't Cheech in a cop show not too long ago?  I don't remember which one... do any of you remember?  I'll go crazy trying to remember...

rues... Its supposed to get up to 60 here to this weekend!  Yay!  I wonder when the tree guy can come and do the work I have for him... he's coming Thursday afternoon.  My daughter is picking up my ex and bringing him here to talk to the guy.  Guess he thinks I'll get a better deal if he's here...  He's probably right... unfortunately. I hope Crow doesn't have nerve damage in his hand!!  Doobie, rues??  lol  Handsome was a bad boy this morning, he didn't come home when I called him and I had to go to work, so he got left outside.  He was waiting for me on the porch and chewed me out for leaving him "out" "out" "out" "out".  lol

cal... Don't you just love a good laugh?  It always makes me feel happy afterward.   :D  My daughter and the girls and I have some good laugh-fests!  Can't wait to see the den cam again!  I hope they get it going really soon, so maybe we can see another beary-go-round!  lol

JP... Glad it's warming up down your way!  That doesn't look right... up down...  lol

Hi Eaglette, Nora, obsver, and the rest of the Jewelies!

Poor Missy and her pants  :D

Sorry Crow is having that trouble with his hand Rues.  I hope it's NOT nerve.

6 AM is oversleeping JP?  Does that go back to your service days?

Glad your sister got that Cal.

Hi Jewelies! It's only 36 out today but the sun is shining and it feels warm! Now they say the flurries are coming overnight. There's still snow in the shaded areas and it will take weeks for the snow piles in parking lots to melt! Can't believe January is almost over!

Cal, I thought the same thing about the DNR hacking Dr Rogers system! Hope it's Jewel's den that gets the camera! That would be so cool! Crow is waiting for the dr ofc to set up an appointment with the neuro doctor. His doctor, of course, wouldn't take blame for the nerve problem. He isn't even sure it is nerve damage, says it could be carpal tunnel! Have to let the neuro dr figure it out. I think the Ely Ted is a lot cuter than the Koppel Ted! :D

Jp, golly Holly is so cute up that tree! :D

Ra, do you have several trees that need trimmed or cut down? Hope the ex can get a you a better price! How's he doing now? My cat Kimmie use to sit at the back porch screen door and cry...me out, me out! We got the biggest kick out of that! But we still wouldn't let her out! Wonder if Handsome learned a lesson...come when you call or be left outside! Lol!

Nora, I hope it isn't nerve damage, too. I don't know what they have to do to fix that! Getting ahead of myself here...we don't even know if that's the problem! My sister always tells me....now don't go running down oh my god street!
