Hi Jewelies! Happy Halloween!!  Long day today... took us almost 3 hours to get to the competition!!  The girls got 3rd place!  Ask how many were in their division... Go ahead and ask... the answer is 3!  lol  I guess they did worse than last week, not sure since I wasn't there.  At least, they got a trophy!  lol  Love the Happy Halloween things you have all posted today!!

rues... I'd love to see all the pumpkins, too!  I hope Crow can figure out how to get the pics on your laptop.  Halloween is my favorite holiday.  I miss dressing up and fooling the girls!  lol  Were there many kids at Robin's house tonight?  We didn't see very many kids out on our way home.  I'm feeling better, but had to sit by a lady at the competition that had on a lot of perfume and I lost my voice for

cal... Clemson won today... 56-41.  We got to listen to a lot of the game on the radio in the car and watched the last couple of minutes here.  I hope your Royals win tonight!

Nora... Did Joe get to come home today?  I hope he's doing well.

I hope everyone has had a good day.  Don't forget to turn your clocks back tonight!  I've got the girls here with me tonight... we're watching Dateline.  That's what we always watch when there's not a football game on that we want to watch.

Cal -- sedate Babe??

I didn't count kids, but we definitely had more kids this year and more parents along and they were all polite!  ALL of them  :o

Ra, yes Joe came home today.  Sparky seemed glad to see him.  Neighbor, Mark, has a real thing about him and he had said to let him know when I headed up and I did, also told him Sparky and I really slept in this morning and he'd just taken care of business so would be ok until we got home.  Well Mark called when we were 20+ minutes from home, maybe close to half hour and said he'd take him out.  He likes to.  We were just going in the house and Mark & Sparky came around the corner of the house and there was a big pot of fresh homemade soup on the stool on the porch I was just taking in.  Sally decided I shouldn't cook tonight.  OK!!  :)  Well Mark opened the door and Sparky saw Joe, so Mark took the leash off and Sparky ran over to say to Joe, but then he'd look back like "goody DAD'S home, but "Uncle" Mark is over there........."  Well I could very well misunderstood, will find out more at Joe's cardiac follow up, but it almost sounds like when he gets the other three stents it's not just by catheterization.  I don't like the idea of open heart surgery, but so much of that is done now days.  Like I said, I'm not positive that's what he'll have, I want to confirm that.

Thanks on all the updates, Halloween stuff, and puzzles Cal and JP!

28 year old Shadow.

cal, The Royals hung in there and pulled it off.  They are a really good baseball team.  I think I will predict a Mets win tonight then the Royals will go home and win the series.  I do not mean they would purposefully lose to do that just that the odds are that will happen.

Nora, good that Joe is home and in  pleasant surroundings.  Open heart surgery is relatively common these days.  Remember, I had 5 coronary arteries bypassed in December of 2008 and that worked pretty well.  I'm still around.

To all I just want to say:

PTZ, Volunteer, and New Bird - UPDATE October 31, 2015

Red Bellied Woodpecker
Red-bellied woodpecker
The new PTZ that went online yesterday is amazing. As Pond Chatters already know, it?s high def, good color, zooms great, and pans nicely to follow the action. We?re still working through an issue opening it on Chrome. Mods can help you. A mod had fun following Ted?s action using the Pan, Tilt, and Zoom. She made this 15-minute video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INrmtBkxzIQ&feature=youtu.be

When I was watching that, one of my favorite videos popped up of gentle Ted making friends with Lucky when Lucky was still a cub on October 23, 2007. It was the day Lucky finally responded to Ted?s overtures and attempts to say ?Let?s be friends? by extending his tongue. Finally, with Lucky on top of the rock den, I believe Lucky reciprocated. Within days, they were play with reckless abandon. That went on for years. Now it?s Lucky and Holly doing that. Just like Lucky and Ted spent a winter together, Lucky and Holly are spending this winter together. Holly had put great effort into making a big burrow den but readily gave that up to sleep with Lucky when he paid her a visit at Lucky?s dug den. Here?s the good memory of Ted and Lucky from 2007 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o44Hvt6wJ0U

I learned from someone with a better memory than mine that we already have a Fred, so Lily?s cub Fred has to change his name to Forest.

Out the window, I was surprised to see a red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) on the feeder. The closest the range map shows them is 150 miles south. Back on May 22, 2003, Sue Mansfield impressed me with her bird knowledge when she told me she saw a red-bellied woodpecker here. I told her it couldn?t be, but she was right. But I don?t know how anyone could have named it a red-bellied woodpecker for the little tinge of pink on the lower belly.

We have a need for several talented and experienced writers to work alongside our Project Coordinators to create successful marketing and fundraising campaigns for the North American Bear Center. Called marketing copywriters. Other projects these experienced writers can help with include iGive, TripAdvisor, and the Combined Federal Campaign, plus promotional materials to support other team efforts throughout the year. The position description and application are posted on www.bear.org/website/volunteer.html.

Another need and opportunity is the new position descriptions for 2016 Bear Educators and Bear Educator Interns that Director of Education Judy Thon posted on the Volunteer Webpage (www.bear.org/website/volunteer/html). Email [email protected] for more. I am personally excited about these positions that added so much to the Bear Center and Ecology Hall this past year. I kept hearing from visitors about the nice time they had there with friendly, helpful, knowledgeable people. I know the effort these Educators made to become knowledgeable and how much they enjoyed making the experiences of others the best they could be. We need more Educators than usual between the Bear Center, the outside viewing deck, behind the scenes tours, the nature trails, and the new Ecology Hall.

Thank you so much for all you do.

Hi Everyone! Hope you all have been well. Hope that you will keep my son Tommy in your thoughts and prayers, finally after about 2 years and beyond of finally not feeling well, he will be having surgery in Boston on Tuesday, about 4 1/2 hr surgery. It is to hopefully correct a condition known as Chiari. Thank You! I think of you all often. :-*

Oh that's right JP on your five arteries and you're doing great!

Saw an adult bald eagle on the way home yesterday.  There was some road kill way on the edge of the road and off to the right the ditch sloped down into a valley.  It was sure beautiful when it took off and circled.  I looked back and it was back eating with the three crows that had also been there.  Oh and the day Joe almost had his surgery a pileated woodpecker landed on the shoulder near a woods and took off.  They are so neat.  Now if I could just see a bear!  ;)

Thanks for the Babe update Cal.

Deb I hope all goes well with Tommy's surgery!!  He should feel so much better after having that done and healed up.  Safe trip!

Happy November 1st Jewelies! The trick or treaters had a nice evening last night to get all that candy! Robin had around 30 kids, mostly little ones, all so cute! A few were a little frightened of Robin's stick on Day of the Dead face tattoos...

Wilson was not happy with the traditional holiday picture taking ordeal...

Here's a couple pics from the Pumpkin House...

It was hard to get good pics because there were so many people roaming around and little kids running all about! Here's a link that shows the house without people in the way! http://www.ckautumnfest.com/   Still having trouble getting all my pics downloaded to my laptop. I'll post some more later!

Hi Jewelies!  Had a fun day with the girls even though it was raining.  We played bingo and laughed a lot.  The youngest grand has been grouchy lately for some reason, and I told her a few days ago that she needed some "gramma" time.  Time to be silly and laugh!  So, she was much happier when she left than we she came here.  A good day.

cal... I actually have the game on tonight... I don't like baseball much, but wanted to see how they were doing.  Love that American Pharoah won the Grand Slam and he was the first ever!  Wow!!  What a horse!  Love the vids of Ted and Lucky playing!  Ted sure is a big ole boy!  lol  Beautiful bear!  He's so black and shiny, he's blue!

rues... Thanks for the pics of Robin and of the Pumpkin House!  How in the world did they get the pumpkins to stay on the roof??  lol  Love all the pics!  I really liked Robin's stickers on her face... very cool!  Where did she get them?  Are you supposed to get some of this rain, too?  We're supposed to get around 4" in the next couple of days.  We have a flood watch already... it's going to start coming down hard tonight... just drizzled most of today.

Deb... I hope Tommy will be better real soon!

Nora... How's Joe feeling?  Cool you saw an eagle!

JP... I saw the end of yesterday's Miami game on the news tonight!  It was so funny!!  And... they suspended the umps for not controlling it all!?  What were they supposed to do?  Find some kind of penalty?   And... Miami won!!??  lol

Hi to all and have a good evening!

A tree full of cubs.  Dona's 2013 group.  Little Bitsy, Taffie Timmy and Snickers.

Hooray  for the Royals, cal.  They really proved they were head and shoulders better than the Mets.  A really good baseball team and so able too come back when down, late in games.   What are we going to do for the next 5-6 months with no baseball?

I know what I am going to do right now.  Go back to bed afater being up past midnight.

Cub Name, Give MN, Crow - UPDATE November 1, 2015

Crow
The friendly crow
My memory is getting embarrassing. In naming Lily?s middle cub, we already had a Fred and we already had a Forest. I should have checked. Somebody suggested Flynn. That sounds familiar somehow, but I think it?s like my name and not another cub. It has to be a F-name to fit with Frankie and Frannie. I wanted a Fr-name, but can?t think of any. I?ll wait a day or two to see if a good name pops up.

The one crow that doesn?t fly away when it sees me in the window is the only one left. The others have gone south. I don?t know why this one stayed. It took years for this crow to become accustomed to me, but I doubt it is getting old. The record lifespan is 59 in captivity and 29 or 30 in the wild. I hope it?s not sick. What surprised me today was that it didn?t fly when I slowly went out on the deck less than 10 feet away. Finally it flew when I walked by 7 feet away to put sunflower seeds out for the hungry little birds and the red-bellied woodpecker that is still here.

We?ve mentioned the successful diversionary feeding that relieved problems around Lake Tahoe during the drought and forest fire year of 2007. Wildlife officials said the worst thing would be to feed them because it would make problems worse the next year. The advice was to eliminate attractants so the bears would go back in the woods, but the reason people were seeing so many bears was because there was practically nothing to eat in the woods. People tried eliminating attractants, even cutting down fruit trees. About the only food available was inside houses and bears came into dozens of houses per day. After a couple bears brushed by gas stoves and accidentally turned them on, people got worried. Ann Bryant and her Bear League took the only action that made sense. They illegally put food in the woods. A peer-reviewed article by Steve Stringham and Ann Bryant tells the rest of the story at http://www.berrymaninstitute.org/files/uploads/pdf/journal/fall2015/StringhamFall2015.pdf . One bit of the ending is that the next spring, instead of bear problems being worse, they were below average.

Thank you for all you do.
