PTZ, Volunteer, and New Bird - UPDATE October 31, 2015
Red Bellied Woodpecker
Red-bellied woodpecker

The new PTZ that went online yesterday is amazing. As Pond Chatters already know, it?s high def, good color, zooms great, and pans nicely to follow the action. We?re still working through an issue opening it on Chrome. Mods can help you. A mod had fun following Ted?s action using the Pan, Tilt, and Zoom. She made this 15-minute video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=INrmtBkxzIQ&feature=youtu.beWhen I was watching that, one of my favorite videos popped up of gentle Ted making friends with Lucky when Lucky was still a cub on October 23, 2007. It was the day Lucky finally responded to Ted?s overtures and attempts to say ?Let?s be friends? by extending his tongue. Finally, with Lucky on top of the rock den, I believe Lucky reciprocated. Within days, they were play with reckless abandon. That went on for years. Now it?s Lucky and Holly doing that. Just like Lucky and Ted spent a winter together, Lucky and Holly are spending this winter together. Holly had put great effort into making a big burrow den but readily gave that up to sleep with Lucky when he paid her a visit at Lucky?s dug den. Here?s the good memory of Ted and Lucky from 2007
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o44Hvt6wJ0UI learned from someone with a better memory than mine that we already have a Fred, so Lily?s cub Fred has to change his name to Forest.
Out the window, I was surprised to see a red-bellied woodpecker (Melanerpes carolinus) on the feeder. The closest the range map shows them is 150 miles south. Back on May 22, 2003, Sue Mansfield impressed me with her bird knowledge when she told me she saw a red-bellied woodpecker here. I told her it couldn?t be, but she was right. But I don?t know how anyone could have named it a red-bellied woodpecker for the little tinge of pink on the lower belly.
We have a need for several talented and experienced writers to work alongside our Project Coordinators to create successful marketing and fundraising campaigns for the North American Bear Center. Called marketing copywriters. Other projects these experienced writers can help with include iGive, TripAdvisor, and the Combined Federal Campaign, plus promotional materials to support other team efforts throughout the year. The position description and application are posted on
www.bear.org/website/volunteer.html.
Another need and opportunity is the new position descriptions for 2016 Bear Educators and Bear Educator Interns that Director of Education Judy Thon posted on the Volunteer Webpage (
www.bear.org/website/volunteer/html). Email
[email protected] for more. I am personally excited about these positions that added so much to the Bear Center and Ecology Hall this past year. I kept hearing from visitors about the nice time they had there with friendly, helpful, knowledgeable people. I know the effort these Educators made to become knowledgeable and how much they enjoyed making the experiences of others the best they could be. We need more Educators than usual between the Bear Center, the outside viewing deck, behind the scenes tours, the nature trails, and the new Ecology Hall.
Thank you so much for all you do.
