Bears Have Feelings - UPDATE October 13, 2023

Here at the WRI, a visit from nice, calm, 5-year-old Adam was a joy this evening after dark. He is the son of Vanna (Shadow, Blackheart, Dot, Vanna, Adam).
But the most engaging interactions through the day have been at the Bear Center where Lucky and Holly showed their feelings for each other by sharing a den. ‘Eyes of the Night’ spotted them just after midnight this morning and spied on them as they were lying outside Den One. Might they den together? Holly did some raking while Lucky rested nearby. Holly entered the den at 12:30 AM and lied down facing out. Lucky walked back and forth outside, making ‘Eyes’ wonder what he was going to do. Then, at 12:37 AM, Lucky slowly walked to the den, turned around, began raking, and slowly backed into it on the left side as you look at it. Holly moved over a little to make room for him, and ‘Eyes’ could see their eye shine as they rested snuggled together.
This morning with Holly and Lucky still in the den, I drove there for a look, not thinking to bring a camera. Darn. There they were, with their heads near the entrance facing each other with the tips of their noses maybe four inches apart. They looked very content to be with each other. Both raised their heads briefly when they heard Scott and me but immediately went back to how they were.
It made me wonder how much they care for each other, wanting to be together now after all these years as they seem to be calling 2023 a year. The gate to their enclosure has been open a lot so that they could decide for themselves whether or not to den together. Seeing them looking so comfortable as close as they were, I believe they have made that decision. We’ll see what happens over the next few days.
Tasha, in Den Three, responded the same with a quick look and back to oblivion.

Here at the WRI, a blue jay provided color by day and the red fox provided excitement after dark as he posed chewing and then looking eye to eye. Thank you, fox.

Sharon’s Bear News from October 7 shows the three bears still up and about with many good pictures.
Thank you for all you do,
