Tornado warning right now in Elyria where I live.  Lots of wind and rain no hail yet.  Supposed to be gone by 6:30, but did not start until 6:45.  I am a little worried about Mary and her two dogs, Molly and Maggie.  They were all sleeping at 5:30.
They are in the basement at Mary's house.  It is solid and well built.  I am in an interior bath room with no windows.

Time with Lily!! - UPDATE August 11, 2023

Lily and Hope 8/16/2010
For the first time since June 28, 2021, I was with Lily last evening and it was the same as ever. She is a wild animal with a wild life who accepts and ignores me like I am not there—which is what made Lily and her mother June such good study bears. They were never attached to me in a way that would distract them from their wild lives. They both focused on their wild surroundings and let me and others record how they foraged, napped, nursed cubs, and reacted to the sights, sounds, and scents of their surroundings. Any reactions to my presence were mainly when I did something unusual like sneezing or was too far away for easy identification.

Last evening, when the film crew and I saw her coming through the woods, I approached her with my usual sing-song ‘It’s me, bear, you’re okay, it’s me.’ She paid no attention. Those words and tone told her there was nothing to worry about. I sat down. She came to me with her eyes on the food, took a mouthful, and showed no reaction when I stroked her down her back. Her focus was on her surroundings. She moved her ears in all directions, sometimes pausing to listen and look in one direction. She also watched the movements of the film crew as they filmed from different angles. I felt honored that she ignored my movements, letting me know she knew and accepted me as if no time had passed. I wondered what she’d do if I tried to take her heart rate. I had the hostess continue feeding her, which Lily accepted, and I began feeling for Lily’s heart rate on her rib cage. Lily looked down briefly without concern at what I was doing and turned back to eating. Her heart rate matched her behavior with a calm 72 beats a minute.

Play, closeness, and demonstrations of affection have never been part of what she did with me. Those kinds of relationships were reserved for her own kind. What she showed me was simple acceptance as she went about living her life, tending her cubs (as in the picture of Lily with Hope from August 16, 2010), and doing what bears do.

Lily brought back good memories of learning, particularly with the den cams. I remember the den cams showing her strong reactions to sounds of animals passing by her dens but not even raising her head if I approached saying ‘It’s me, bear’ if she had her head tucked under her chest to breathe on her cubs as they nursed. Sometimes it’s good to be ignored.

With many good memories, thank you for all you do.

hi you guys its 71 here lighting off in the skies 61 cloudy in ice 71 and cloudy in kviv 74 ac running in the barn. nice for doc to get to be with lily. nice to know she is okay. i want summer to end but dont want it to be sept bear murdering season at all. like anymore just one bad thing in the world after another.

hi joho i saw that tornado deal for you on the weather channel it was rotation in lorain county i knew it was close to you. i did not have my ipad but figured you were taking shelter. if you have no basement you were in a good place. hope all your family took cover too. then i saw no more rotation still storms but no rotation. weather is the worst this year. i was praying our power did not go out last night. so hot and humid and we would of have dragged out extension cord but i dont know if the fan would of been enough and jim need to practice using that portable generator for the barn. get another cord for it too and have gas for it. wish we could just get another generator like house one for the barn. hope no damage in your area from storms. hope you are okay. anyone in a basement should be okay.

hi neva i saw it was 82 for you sometime last night on the weather channel also showing before and after maui.

Horse Trekking ...  31:40    98°  (12:51 pm)   Sunny, cloud towers building to the east ...  rain ?  maybe - if the towers don't get their tops shirred off by the wind.

I hope your day is going as you had hoped it would.

Cal     We are having a cooler day, for which I'm grateful.    I'm glad to hear that you are going for another implant rather than a bridge ... it has got to be a lot better route to go with.

Joho       You had a busy day yesterday and I must say are so thoughtful.  Was Mary surprised with the gift of donuts?

6: 53 kingfisher and 7:27 Trekking  My glasses are not working this morning.  Took nearly two hours to read the paper.  Kept going back to see what it really said. Took them off.
What a great Update!  Thanks Cal
Did finally see Mary last night for a little while.  She had a bad couple of days over worry for her little Molly dog's eye problems.  Maggie, her new puppy, gave her a scare too in her city street.  I fear for her safety.  I know it will break Mary's heart if anything hurts Maggie.  Mine too.  Maggie is the sweetest most confident puppy I have ever seen.  She is so loving, and absolutely fearless.
Mary likes to voice train her dogs.  She has done a great job over the years with many dogs, but this one is just too adventurous and social.  She feels a need to greet everyone she sees, and she turns a deaf ear.  She will need a firmer hand to learn safety rules.  A vibrator collar is in her future, and it is effective.  She does not ignore it even on the lowest setting.  Mary did a test last night with one tiny buzz.  Maggie was startled.  She looked around the kitchen.  Then zoomed for the safety of her sleeping kennel, and curled up inside.  If she does this when buzzed out by the curb she should soon learn her boundaries.  I am praying for early and complete success with her training.
Well that is enough for now I think.  Don't know yet what today will bring.  I am hoping for some time with Mary.
I should tell you that the Spudnuts were a hit.  Mary and her sister enjoyed them a lot.  They had several nice surprises as to what filling was inside.  I was very happy to hear this.
Bye for now my friends. GBU and GB Ukraine

Kingfisher ...  27:50     99°  (3:24 pm)  Sunny, clouds to the east and windy.  We had a great rainstorm yesterday afternoon.

I hope your day is going along well.

Hi Cal    Yes, another cool day today and we got a lovely rainstorm yesterday.  I wanted to go out and stand in it, but I didn't.  We get some humidity along with the rain, but you probably get a lot more.  I know that these days, an implant is the way to go, back when I was getting work done, I got a number of root canals.  They are fairly good, but I can see why the implants are better.  I do hope they don't mess with your appointment and you can get in there as soon as possible.

Hi Joho      Has Mary dealt with dog training most of her life?  She sounds like a dog person.  It is an interesting challenge to introduce a puppy to their new "Pack" and to get them to understand what the rules are in their new family and what their place is.  Harlow is in her second year, but will remain puppy-ish for a while longer, and the process goes on in teaching her.  She's learning though.

Lily and Lucy and Cubs - UPDATE August 13, 2023

Lucy
A double treat today was more of 16-year-old Lily and it was my first meeting this year with 7-year-old Lucy and her three female cubs. I didn’t see her when she was here two months ago. Lucy is another bear, like Lily, that ignores and accepts me even though Lucy and I didn’t have the early start in getting to know each other that I had with Lily. The picture of her shows the white line on the right side of her chest that identifies her. I didn’t see her cubs up close, but Mike Johnson did and sent me the picture of the three light-faced cubs he identified as all females.

Lucy w/3 female cubs
by M.Johnson
Lucy has always been small for her age, which is probably why she didn’t have cubs until she was five, giving birth to two males—Desi and Arnaz—in 2021. Now, at seven, she has us looking for three female names that would fit Lucy’s name.

I didn’t see her cubs up close today because by the time they came down from the big white pine where Lucy had left them, I was elsewhere with the film crew waiting for Lily to show. When it got too dark for filming, the crew left. As they backed out of the driveway, I heard word Lily was there. I didn’t know how to reach them, but we probably could not have filmed her in the dark anyway. My meeting with Lily was like the meeting a couple evenings ago with her ignoring and accepting me as she maintained awareness of her surroundings.

The hosts of that location had a surprise for me about Lily—a surprise that calls into question some of what I wrote in the update a couple nights ago. After our previous meeting, she returned an hour or so later but didn’t immediately go for the food. She went to where she and I had first met that evening and sniffed the step where I had sat. Then she went to the bench where I sat next and sniffed that, ignoring the food on it. She stood by the bench looking around for several minutes before beginning to eat. How do we explain that? Was she thinking about me? The hosts thought so. I’d like to think so, but I always wonder if there is a better explanation for what I see than what I want it to be. If she did return partly to see me, it was the first indication ever that she would have such a motive. All I can say is that it was good to see her again and to see Lucy behaving much the same.

The film team have now left, jubilant that their efforts obtained footage that can help people understand bears. I saw their efforts and felt blessed to be part of it. It was a great time all the way.

A big thank you to them and to all of you for all you do for the same reasons.

Mexican Eagle ...  26:07     98°  (1:02 pm)   Sunny, a few clouds, windy ... really nice.

I hope all is going well with all that read here.

Hi Cal -   Thank goodness for those pellets in the barn.  I hope the heavy rain lets up for you.  I remember humid summers from my time in Massachusetts.  We still do occasionally get more humidity than usual here at times.  Very uncomfortable and when it is humid, the Cooler doesn't work as well either.

I went to a Neurologist on Thursday for a diagnosis, and am now being treated for Parkinson's.  I'm okay.  At 81 it's not the same as if I were much younger, I expect... not as much time to develop.

Hi Joho   How is your day going?

So sorry to hear that Neva.  Here I was just getting happily home from Mary's after a great day with Nick and a great evening with Mary, Molly, and Maggie.
Dear Lord please spare your girl Neva from too much suffering.  She says it is less serious at her AGE.  I say lord it is more serious.  She needs the comfort and peace only you can bring. Please do it for her.
God Bless Us and Ukraine too.
