A little more information on 6-year-old Carolyn and her two yearlings that were spotted Easter evening a few minutes after 7 PM. About noon that day, a mother with two yearlings was spotted emerging from a culvert under Highway 169 just a half mile away. And now a second mother with two yearlings has been spotted in the area but not identified yet.

Beaver - first this spring
Looking from my desk at the beaver lodge last evening at 7:51 PM, the first beaver I’ve seen this year had found ice thin enough to crack through and come up. After a few minutes, it went back down the hole into the water and presumably into the lodge.Flicker

A couple nights ago, one of the foxes posed nicely for ID shots showing me the right side of its face, then front on, and the left side. Still trying to figure out if there are two or three foxes and how to identify them.
Today the raven was calm and non-threatening as far as I could tell while two new spring birds added beauty in appearance and song. The flicker didn’t say anything but sat for a nice shot showing the black mustache that says male. High and unseen in a white pine, a male robin sang his song as the sun went down.

It was a good day. Among other things, I had the pleasure of talking about bears to the bear class of 24 students at Ely’s Vermilion Community College.
I’ll be looking for the culvert bear den on the way home now.
Thank you for all you do.
