9:04 due to sticky mouse mostly, but hard matching too.  Also, my glasses are not reliable anymore.  Have new prescription, but don't really want to go to optometrist.  Don't like them.  They charge too much and their glasses don't work.  I have not had a good pair of glasses in at least fifteen years.  Always have to hold them up with my fingers in order to red the paper, and see double through distance lens since day one. Now at three years in.
Left glasses at home all day yesterday.  Did not miss them except for sun glare.  Mine turn dark in the sun and cold.
Miserable out here today. Won't be going out. Constant rain and pretty cold.  No snow yet, but it is probably on the way.  Saw snow in Ely quite a bit.  Cal's temps are cold, and coming East I guess.  Terrible damage along the East coast.
My neighbors across the street are going to Florida today to help repair their son's home from the last storm.  Now they probably have more to do from this storm.  High water levels and climate change are real. Turn off your lights when you leave the room.
Seems like I am always preaching about something. LOL
Bye for now.  GBU and GB Ukraine

Getting Ready for Winter - UPDATE November 10, 2022

Red fox
The warm spell ended today. For at least the next nine days the temperature will stay below freezing. I suspect the lake will soon freeze over and the 150-plus ducks that visit will find open water on a larger lake and/or head south. Meanwhile other visitors are preparing for winter in their own ways.Mallards
Mallards

Chickadees are eating sunflower seed hearts by holding them with a foot and pecking tiny pieces, or they may do the same as red-breasted and white-breasted nuthatches and store them in crevices in or under bark.Chickadee
Chickadee

The white-breasted nuthatch will likely find a crevice to hide it. Birds that cache food have remarkable ability to remember where it is. It was recently found that chickadees enlarge the hippocampus 30 percent in winter to help them remember so many locations.

Blue jays are filling a sac in the throat and upper esophagus called a gular pouch until it bulges with sunflower seed hearts or raw peanuts (without shells) to eat or to cache for later. They sometimes hide them in bark crevices in bark, or they bury them. They have been known to bury acorns up to 2 ½ miles from the source, making scientists think that blue jays were important in expanding the ranges of many oak species.

As blue jays work here at the WRI, they have their eyes open for two juvenile sharp-shinned hawks that are looking for sustenance for their first migration. The pictures of a young hawk in action were taken a fraction of a second apart as the hawk eyed a passing blue jay and made a turn toward it.

Red squirrels eat sunflower seed hearts and raw peanuts where they find them, or they carry them off to bury nearby. They also may pile them up in ‘middens’ at the bases of trees. I remember a good hazelnut year when red squirrels beat the bears to most of the nuts but did the bears a favor they didn’t realize. Red squirrel
Red squirrel
By piling them up in middens, they established a pattern that the bear family I was following caught on to. The family went from tree to tree, sniffing for middens and finding bonanzas of hazelnuts that they could eat very efficiently.

The red fox that visits here buries most of what he gets.

There was a mix-up about pictures last evening, so you’re now seeing some of the same pictures with the stories behind them. We deleted the previous night's photos from the update.

Thank you for all you do,

7:21  On Toucan bird.  I am sluggish this morning.  Must be slowing down. LOL I wish.
Gonna go watch "Back to the Wild".  My favorite Sat. morning show.  It is on my channel 4.  It comes from Nova Scotia where they rehab all manner of wild animals.  M y Scottish great grand parents came to the US from Nova Scotia.  I have never been up that way.  Maybe some day I will go see them.  I mean the animals rescue, not my grand parents.
I liked Doc's update, and I did notice some of the pics were from earlier but I did read the captions an saw they were a new subject.
GTG now "wild" is coming on in a few.
Bye now.  CUL EV1 GBU and GB Ukraine

Toucan ... 22:24     74°  (2:48 pm)   Sunny, a few clouds, no wind at the moment.  Another nice day.

Hi everyone, I hope all is going well.

Cal, yes, my yard is fenced.  It's chain linked fence with beige privacy slats.  I had wished it was a wall, but this looks good and I can see through it well enough to know what's going on out there.  One day I was standing out there on the porch and I could see a Coyote walking down the back alley, and it stopped and looked at my fence for a minute or so.  I'm glad that I got to see that, it reminded me that it could get over that fence and go after Zoe if she were out there alone.  We need to out there with her, and the puppy.  Most houses have a fence or a wall.  It is just nicer that way, and alleviates potential arguments.

Joho,  I sent for and received a copy if a marriage license application for my great-grandparents and where it asked where they were from, my grandmother was from Maine and grandfather was listed as  NS, which I guessed might be Nova Scotia. ???  I don't know for  sure yet.  I have some Scottish on both sides,, both Northern Ireland (Omagh) and Scotland.  I have done DNA testing with both Ancestry.com. and  23 and Me.  That has been fun, with lots of surprises.

Wildlife Reactions - UPDATE November 13, 2022

Red fox
In the old days of walking with bears, what stirred my interest most were reactions that gave insights into their hearts, minds, and personalities. That’s what let me realize some bears were willing to let me walk with them in the first place.

It’s also interesting to see the same looking out the window from my desk as they react to other animals (including me) and/or to members of their same species.

Red Fox pasing
Red Fox passes

As the fox passes by, most deer take note, but some quickly go back to foraging while others watch anxiously with the tail up. Some deer feed calmly with each other while others rise up and strike with their hooves.

Deer competing
Deer competition
Deer and Raven
Deer and Raven
Ravens are interesting in that they are among the most skittish birds with regard to people in the woods but have learned to accept people in Ely. Some ravens and crows show amazing acceptance of passing 60-mile-an-hour traffic just 5 feet away as they stand on the shoulder of the road just off the pavement. In the yard here, ravens accept deer more than deer accept them. The deer and raven in the picture were looking for peanuts at one point with their heads just a foot apart, but it is usually the deer that moves away. Ravens often feed close to wolves and bears at carcasses.

Hairy woodpecker male
Hairy woodpecker male
Red squirrels defensive over food
Red squirrels
Their minds all differ. The hairy woodpecker is unusual in its courage to be within a foot of a red squirrel (out of picture) but is full of anxiety with its widely spread tail. The two standing red squirrels are ready to defend or attack to fill their stomachs with sunflower seeds.

I wish I knew what was going on in their heads. I have always wished the same about black bears, which is why I studied individuals year after year to learn histories that might explain a bit more of what I saw. I am hoping to again to be able to use radio collars to learn more.

Evening Grosbeak
Evening Grosbeak

Temperatures below freezing are forecast for the next week or more. Woods Lake is iced over. The ducks are gone. A big flock flew low over the snow-covered ice today but kept going. Winter white might be here to stay, making the color of an evening grosbeak or a red fox stand out even more brilliantly.

Thank you for all you do,

8:39  Record for long time.  LOL  I am distracted this morning.
Been doing a lot of on line setup and phoning.  The phone works best, but not as well as it used to before answering machines took over.  Now you have to know most of the answers to the reason for your call before you can get past the machine. LOL If I had the answers, I would not be calling.  This is especially true for Verizon, for Spectrum, and for Sam's Synchrony Bank in Florida.
Almost noon already and I have been on here all morning, but cannot finish up, because I have to go somewhere in person.  Could have done that when I was there Saturday, but no.  Did not come up until I tried to call for "support".   Again , if I knew all the answers to the questions they ask I would not be calling.
