Good morning everyone- beautiful morn here- clear and 61. Out of that storm  on monday we only got a half an inch of rain but the grass may need cut this week. Yesterday i didn't go to the rec center.  Part of town had some power but all power didn't come on until late afternoon.  Luckily we had no problem.
I messed around in the flower beds and it was surprising how many maple leaves were in amongst the plants.  Flowers have recovered except for those naked ladies that were completely broken off.  I even trimmed some small tree branches that were hanging low.
Our favorite ABC station out of Cedar Rapids is still off air. They must have had major damage there.
One of my projects for today is to get stuff ready to send to  the Goodwill store. One of the stores in a small town around here has temporarily closed due to lack of business so i'll need to head to the city.

Izzy and already had her breakfast and her mad dash around the house.  She is a gem.

Sending positive vibes for those in need!!

Have a great day jewelies!

Cal, Wilson was horrible at the vet! Since he is red flagged they normally would take him to another room and cover him with a towel to examine him and give him his shots. Well, thanks to ykw they don't leave the room now. So Robin and I witnessed how crazy he gets with them! He tried to bite the vet through the door on his carrier! They had to tip him out of the carrier and then the vet tech quickly covered him with the towel and held on to him for dear life. The vet gave him his shot and they quickly put him back into the carrier. No weighing him or physically examining. Vet said his legs seemed to be doing well as were his vocal chords! Tela was a piece of cake! She was snooping around the room during Wilson's ordeal. Vet was concerned that Tela had lost weight. She was at 5.7 lbs but now at 5.2 lbs. They did bloodwork on her and it came ok as were fecal tests on both of them. Both are good to go for another year. After we got home, Wilson stretched out on the living room floor and panted. Poor thing.  Since I only go to Walmart once a week now, I cannot find anything since they are remodeling! It's like I'm in a different store. I told the clerk that I need a road map! Lots of shelves were empty today. But they have toilet paper! Lol!

Lupe, glad you guys were safe from that storm. Our weather guy said the Midwest was being hit with a derecho. We experienced one on June 29, 2012. I will never forget that day. It was crazy. Crow and I watched from our front bay window that faced the west. We saw a neighbor's porch roof blow off and fly over their house! There were trash cans rollling out the avenue and trees bending over to the ground. And tree leaves were flying all over the place. Then we realized maybe we shouldn't be standing in front of this window! After it was all over with we had to scoop out all kinds of stuff from the pool. It was a mess. Robin was on her way to Ft Wayne, Indiana. She was in far western Ohio and had to pull off the road when the wind got so bad that she couldn't control the car! At her house the neighbor's dead tree had blown over on to her garage roof and left a huge hole in it. So Crow and I had to get tarps and climb up on the roof to cover the hole! Both my sisters were without power for almost a week. We had never anything like this happen around here before and I hope we never have another one. Sorry that your naked ladies were damaged! Can you make a bouquet out of them?

Ra, you can borrow Crow any time you want! Lol! I'm pretty sure you'll return him quickly! Are your daughter and grand daughters excited about returning to school? Our cases keep going up but governor still says schools will open Sept 8. Hope by then things are better.

Have a nice day! Stay safe!

A Peaceful Day - UPDATE August 12, 2020
12 August 2020
 Print Email
It was actually a day of crunching data, which feels good in its own way, but I loved the view out that window of Woods Lake at its calmest. Going along with that, Lily?s 1?-year-old daughter Kaiya calmly sat and contemplated.

Good morning everyone- calm morning here but many still without power in the cities around here. Hubby working on cleaning up downed trees behind his shop. The really funny thing is that we have several ash trees that are dead- most with no leaves at all and none of them got knocked down. Just living trees had damage. I guess the leaves held the winds that were howling through.  The big limbs that were out of trees close to the house came from the middle of the tree without damaging outer limbs. Would have been interesting to see how that happened. I saw that storm complex on radar when it was still out in South Dakota but usually those storms fizzle out by the time they get here. So all morning i wasn't concerned. At noon we were watching TV and they came on with warnings. I checked radar- went out to get chair pads off barn garden chair and braced everything on the back porch. Stuff got blown over anyhow.  A derecho- don't think i ever heard that word before.

Well- Izzy went outside yesterday. On her leash of course and she was very good. Stayed on the porch and watched birds and butterflies. She had a busy morning helping with cleaning and mopping so she slept all afternoon.

rues- i also have had nightmare cats. When i worked at vet clinics the ones you always had to watch were the sneaky ones. Ones the owner said- oh he would never hurt anyone. I can't believe you guys watched the storm like you did. Monday was the first time in 34 years here that we went to the basement. Hubby was watching branches fly by and made the decision.

Have a great day jewelies!

Lupe, a derecho (pronounced similar to "deh-REY-cho") is a widespread, long-lived wind storm associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. A derecho can produce destruction similar to that of a tornado, but the damage typically occurs in one direction along a relatively straight swath. We had never heard of derecho either until it came here. Hadn't heard of a polar vortex either. I give all the credit to the Weather Channel for telling us what these weather systems are called! Wilson certainly let the vet know how he felt about her! Lol! Izzy sounds like the perfect kitty! What a sweetie you have! :)

Cal, Kaiya looks so cute the way she is posed! And what a cute dog shame with the cat and dog. Sometimes Wilson and Boo sniff noses. I wish I could get a pic of that but it doesn't last very long. A long time ago Boo had the nickname Cat Eradicator because he would catch the feral cats in Robin's backyard and shake them to death. >:( For him to sniff noses with Wilson, let Wilson walk overtop him and they share table scraps means he has come a long way! Fingers crossed that Polly does well practicing her driving skills! We had planned on getting our drivers license renewed this week but I needed to get a certified copy of my birth certificate. My old one had my mom's name misspelled so thought I'd better get that corrected. But couldn't get in the courthouse because it is closed  all week. Four employees tested positive for ykw! Maybe get to go next week.  No hurry, I have until Oct 1 to get the license renewed.

Have a nice afternoon! Stay safe! :)

Good morning everyone- clear sky here and warm already;
rues- ty for the storm info; i think we have straight line wind events sometimes; they can be up to a hundred mpg and wide spread damage too. Guess i'll leave the terminology to the weather channel.

cal- i had update yesterday when i shut down my puter. Then it finished this morning when i turned it on, No choice in the matter.  So far i haven't  found any bizarre changes- lol.

A couple days ago on the Decroah cam i heard squeeing and then one if the parents flew along the stream followed closely by a strong flying juvie. Shortly they came flying back then i heard scrabbling about and the wonderful cam operator switched to a nest can and there they were. It's just amazing the difference in looks. The adult actually looks small compared to the juvie. Of course the adult had a fish and the juvie  wanted it. It seems like i've seen more of these  juvies in and around the nest after fledging than any other year. It may just be me.
Time for breakfast- have a great day jewelies!

Helping Cinnamon and Her Cubs - UPDATE August 13, 2020

We?re helping Cinnamon and her two cubs (one male and one female) for several reasons. There are few berries in the woods. She is further hampered in her feeding and making milk by having an injured, blind right eye that looks like the blind eye of One-eyed Jack. She is trying to feed two cubs that are about a third the size of the others we?ve seen. She is so hungry that she braves the presence of males who this small bear runs off. We are trying to keep this hungry bear out of trouble in this crisis year for bears in northeastern Minnesota due to the spring drought.

Thank you for all you do.

A Treat for Cinnamon and her Cubs - UPDATE August 14, 2020
14 August 2020
 Print Email
Cinnamon and cubs
Cinnamon and cubs
A neighbor went in to Ely and picked some ripe chokecherries that Cinnamon and her cubs soon made disappear. Cinnamon got her share for a minute or two, but she saw how much the cubs wanted them, and she let them have them. When they were done, she led them into a grove of white pines for the main course. Her glance toward me gave the camera a look at her eye.

Also watching was a yearling resting on a branch.

The cubs and Cinnamon are doing fine. The amount of time she spends here shows how scarce favorite foods are in the woods. With baiting starting today, we want to keep them here safe as much as we can.
