Hi Jewelies! Hot day here, too! Even hotter tomorrow! But Sat and Sunday will feel good with highs in the 70's! Robin and Tasha were back in the pool today. Both had sunburns from yesterday. So far, I haven't been in the pool. Maybe tomorrow.

Cal, no don't think it was Jo that bumped into the trailer! Lol! Crow said he was a kid and a scared one, too! He was very apologetic and afraid that he had damaged the trailer. I doubt that I will ever drive the mower. There's too many things I could hit! Like the fence or the neighbor's truck parked at the curb! I fear that I would likely drive off the curb and into the street! I think I will keep my feet on the ground! Love the update pics! Jewel's kid sticking out the tongue is so cute! I remember that awful time when the  collared bears had bounties on them. What horrible people. I don't get bravo. Sounds like a good show!

Lupe, yep, that's the creeping Charlie! What a nuisance plant. Love your poppies! My grandma had a row of them. Your yard is so green and pretty! Glad you got to spend some time with Duke!

Ra, a horse would be nice or maybe a goat! lol!

Have a nice evening! Stay safe!

Bear News ? June 7, 2020

Ted splash
Ted splash
It?s raining and 46 degrees in Ely this morning. We've had a couple of windy days which can spark fires so it?s a much-needed rain.

The North American Bear Center welcomed four new eager interns this week. They are anxious to educate the public and talk about our beautiful bears. Their backgrounds range from zoology, biology, environmental science and fish and wildlife.

Lucky eating
Lucky eating
During the course of their stay with us they will learn bear care, public speaking, working as part of a team and gain a volume of experience. They will introduce themselves on public broadcasts soon.

Yesterday, was National Black Bear Day. The Bear Center staff and interns celebrated with our bears by cleaning the bunkers. In the past this particular task has been left to the interns as an initiation. Today, it still remains that. The interns have arrived at a time when work is at its peak and the females are in estrus.

As many of you watched and showed concern for Ted bear this week, it is with great pleasure to tell you he is doing well. As I worked with our staff and veterinarians we were baffled and guessing as to what may have caused him to be lethargic and show little interest in foods. The best guess was the medicines upset his system. The medications haven't changed but maybe at 23 years old Ted's system did.

I tried to get a urine sample, but I couldn't get my timing with his need to pee. His scat was negative for parasites. I am thankful for our moderators who kept an eye on him while he was resting.Holly

In other news, our two females seem to be in competition for handsome Lucky. As you all know Lucky is castrated but he is still interested in our two females. Tasha is especially after his attention this year, but he still wants to mate with Holly. Stay tuned.

The bear center will be opening soon, so stay with us as we welcome visitors. We can?t wait to welcome visitors and for our interns to begin their public speaking education.

I want to also thank all of you for voting on your favorite pinata to be given to your favorite bear. The voting continues until noon on June 13th. We appreciate every vote/donation which go directly to bear care and food. Don?t forget to join the fun on June 14th at 10am on our LIVE cams as each of the bears receive their pinatas and we pull the Grand Prize winners.

Thank you for all you do,

Sharon Herrell, Sr. Bearkeeper/Curator

Rusty
Rusty
Out the window, Rusty cruised through with a brief stop. He is busy but alone at the moment. He is the suspected father of the brown cubs we?re seeing with Fern and Pixie this year.

Thank you for all you do,

Good morning everyone- sunny here with a high in the 90's. We need to mow today hopefully it will be dry enough this morning.
Yesterday we met my friend who lives in Illinois. We chose a town that was halfway between us. She is an avid reader and goes to many library sales. She wanted to weed out her personal library and asked if I wanted some books. She brought them yesterday so now I have at least a 6 month supply.  We went through the drive up at McDonalds then went to a shady spot in the parking lot of a business next door. Hubby and I took our chairs and we sat, visited and ate. Hadn't been to a McD's in a long time. Pretty sure it wil be a long time again. Thebest part was we stopped at our favorite ice cream shop in Ainsworth.
When we pulled in they were very busy- a herd of 6 motorcycles had pulled in ahead of us and were in line in front of us. 3 women and 6 men. After a bit I said- Isn't this a great day to be on a motorcycle? They all agreed- one made a comment about sunburn. I said- I was going to offer sun block which I had in the car- But I said - it was too late. They were already burned. We had a good laugh!!
Then when we got to the window we found out the guy with the sunburn paid for our order!! Amazing. We walked by them as we went to our car- I went up to the guy- Said- If it weren't for social distancing i'd give you a hug! Then TY TY TY! What a great day!! Excellent ice cream too- I had a hot fudge sundae and hubby had a peanut butter crunch cyclone with extra peanut butter. Both were yummy.
Then after we got home I got a call from our rec center- senior strength class returns today. More on that later.
Up late and have to be out in an hour.
Have a great day jewelies!

Good morning everyone- i'm a bit early this morn because I want to get out at first light. When I mowed yesterday the grass was pretty long in places and I want to rake some up. Plus I need to dead head the peonies. Heavy rain due here and I don't want the bushes to be knocked down.
cal- your snake wrangling sounds exciting.  Not sure i'd be brave enough to do it though. My problem with McD's is the lack of nutrition. Plus I ate the bun- food was fine just not for me.

Going to class yesterday was so fun. There were  5 of us plus one instructor. No problem with social distancing because the room is big enough. We realized yesterday that it had been close to 3 months we were off. My friend who had 2 stents put in over Memorial Day weekend was there and she did good. Had an appointment to see the therapist to do cardiac rehab. Her heart problems started years ago.

So great to have some things back to almost normal. We weren't allowed to have coffee provided  so we may have to figure something else out. We wore our masks in but took them off for class. Then I went to the grocery in town and got my sil a few groceries.
Wow- sun is coming up and sky is red-red-red! Red sky in the morning sailors take warning. Well, i'm no sailor but i'm on my way outside!
Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
41st Anniversary - UPDATE June 9, 2020
09 June 2020
 Print Email
Although our anniversary is today, Donna and I started celebrating 6 days ago with a trip to ?The Lost Forty? a 40 acre parcel of virgin white pines 300 to 400 years old that got missed due to the good fortune of a surveying error over a century ago. Lynn by white pine
Lynn by white pine
The surrounding area was cut and came back aspen, birch, maple, basswood, and oak.

On the way, we saw that the U. S. Forest Service is still following my recommendation to spare white pines. All the white pines were spared in a clear-cut in the Chippewa National Forest in which all the aspens were cut. The aspens will quickly re-sprout from their root system, while white pines would have to grow from seeds and be shaded out by the fast growing aspens and be hampered by other factors. A century of near total removal of white pines changes the ecosystem in ways that make it difficult for white pines to regenerate after harvest.

One of Donna?s requests for our anniversary was to visit The Lost Forty. We took a 2 hour walk and saw towering white pines and evidence of the history of this stand that took root in the 1600?s when settlers were just beginning to arrive from Europe. Some trees were scarred by fire while others remained unscathed due to white pine?s thick bark. They were magnificent, growing on the richest soil in Minnesota?soil deposited millennia ago by the Des Moines lobe of an ancient glacier. Some of the trees were dead or dying, but in this untouched forest within the Chippewa National Forest they were left to do their ecological duties. A healthy forest is a functioning ecosystem that includes dead and dying trees to provide food and homes for wildlife. A dead white pine that topples over can become a mini-ecosytem that can last for over two centuries.

Donna got a nice picture of a False Lily-of-the-Valley plant in bloom, and she snapped a picture of me being a tree-hugger.

Her other request for our anniversary was to take a pontoon ride to see if the eagles were at their shoreline nest this year. They are, and both were there. Other treats were seeing a loon, a great blue heron, and a family of mallards cruising the shoreline snatching bugs from the vegetation.

Out the window, 4-year-old Lucy was popular, getting interest from Ursula?s 3-year-old son Wendell and her sibling Fred, but Lucy had her own agenda?food, and the males drifted off.

Good morning everyone- 70 here and wet and foggy. We got 2 and a half inches of rain yesterday. No wind and no lightening either. Then I was woken up with thunder at midnight. More rain- haven't checked the gauge yet today. So not enough sleep- maybe a nap after lunch.

I went out just after it got light yesterday and got all my dead heading done. I pulled a few weeds but the ground was really dry so it was hard to get the weeds. Maybe i'll try today. Then I got all my raking done. When I first went out it was just getting light out and one set of babies apparently didn't leave when mom said- Time to Go. I saw 3 scooting north but one was pacing around the summer house. On the third time around he finally got the direction right and headed north.  Then I kept hearing a racoon talking. Turns out one baby was in the maple tree by the porch. He was pretty low sitting in the y of the tree. I tried to get him to come down but he waited until I was far away then he made his escape. He looked so cute in the tree but I could tell he wasn't happy.

I liked the update too- great celebration plans. I've never seen a false lily of the valley. Beautiful.

I need to get moving- my friend and I are going to walk today but we haven't figured out ow we'll stay 6 feet from each other yet. She's a bit hard of hearing so if there are other people there it may be too noisy to talk from a distance. I guess we'll see.
Have a great day jewelies!

hi jewelies it is 55 here so nice 2 raccoonies 2 babies.  i got to go to exceslior in a bit price choppers big walmart get gas for my car and mower i mowed yesterday the dogs yard and side going to try to mow part of pearls pasture just the part close to the barn hope it is this cool tomorrow morning so i can

hi lupe! well good that lone kid got on its way im sure its family was waiting for it farther up. mine are close to the barn but at my old house a big oak tree had the back deck built around it. deck was up high lots of stairs to go down to get in the dogs yard so happy do not have that here and i had raccoonies there they would press their faces against the glass in the patio doors and a few times a baby would be sleeping up there mom left. so all day long i watched over it when they came that night and left it went with them. but letting the dogs out worried but the dogs never knew it was up there and it kept on sleeping.  hope you and friend had a good time walking and got to yell at each other! :) when we use to go on trail rides with lots of other people and their horses so much fun too best of times for me not much talking at all. if someone talked to me i would just kind of nod cause i could not hear a word they were saying.
