cal- bleeding heart is done blooming now- plant looks great-  and.... Duke is here!!!!! His mom called a bit ago and they decided to do a little drive- need to get out of town. She was going to pick him up later today but I talked her into leaving him overnight.    Yay!! He is such a good boy. Will have to be careful when I take him out in the morning- put him on leash and keep him close. Don't know what the racoonies will think of him. He really smelled around when he got here. Checked out the well and dirt piles- so funny. Such a good day!!

Hi Jewelies!  Yup... still hot here...

rues... Where are you??  Hope everything is okay.

cal... Smokey doesn't usually give you much trouble, does it?  Hope they figure out what's going on.    Are you in line for the tail end of the hurricane this time?  We might get some rain on the edge of it.  I'm having trouble with my two naughty kits... they keep wanting to scratch the furniture in the living room, even though there are four... yes, four... scratching posts in here!!

lupine... What a nice surprise to have your house guest back for a visit!  Yes... good idea to keep him away from the raccoons... mama might not like him much.

Have a good evening, Jewelies!  Hi and peace to all!

Daily Updates
Another Chapter on Fern - UPDATE June 5, 2020
05 June 2020
 Print Email
Fern, born to Jewel on January 19, 2012, had a full litter of Clover, Clyde, and Cletus (1 female, 2 males) in 2016. All survived through family break-up at about 1.5 year of age.Ferns cub
Ferns cub

Then Fern skipped a year when cubs were expected in 2018 and had a single male cub Carlin in 2019 that was seen with her on May 26, near the beginning of mating season, but did not survive. There was no cub with Fern when she was seen a month later, after the mating season, on June 29 of 2019. There is no way to know the cause of death, but when a single cub is lost during the mating seasonFern
Fern
I suspect it was like the Lily and Hope story?that one cub cannot suckle enough to prevent ovulation, leaving the mother with conflicting drives to both mother and mate with mating taking precedence for long enough that the cub often dies (unlike Hope).

Now in 2020, she has another single cub. The picture of Fern calling the cub down is at a birch tree, which is a little unusual. Cubs much prefer to climb trees with strong, rough bark, like in the pictures of the cub from another day in a white pine.

This brown cub that is still of unknown sex makes us think that Rusty, a brown adult male was busy last year?as he is again this year. This brown male has been seen in several places in a 5 mile diameter area. Pixie?s cubs are brown, too. And Donna lives in that circle. Ferns cub
Ferns cub
However, I might be jumping the gun a bit in calling them brown because some cubs that start out dark brown molt into black or almost black fur by September.

We?ll see how this single cub does through the remainder of this mating season, but I suspect that if Fern kept it this long that it will make it. Always guessing and then learning.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- cooler out this morn and partly cloudy. The dog shame gave me a giggle- Duke kind of blends in to his pillow too. We've been up for a couple hours and he is sound asleep. I'll need to wake him so we can go outside to mess around in the flower beds. My schedule was messed up last night and I didn't get food out and the racoonies were mad. Dug up mulch and spread it around; dug up a brick by the back porch- yeesh! Knocked over a potted pansy. Another mess to clean up.

A farmer neighbor stopped to borrow a wrench from hubby yesterday and we had a short conversation about ykw. He has a 98 year old dad who he has only seen through the window. So hard on him. I also talked to my sil who is in the memory care unit of our local nursing home. She said she wished we could go out to our favorite places. I said me too but for now she is in the safest place for her and her husband. I hate to admit it but when they were shutting stuff down in March I thought it was overkill. Boy- was I wrong.

I found out that to sign up for classes at our rec center/Y we have to go on line. Well--- I tried and really- must I create stress from this?  I'm just going to go in. Our spin class which is in a really small room will be in the gym so we can social distance. don't know if we'll have senior strength next week. Will call in to see.

ra- I think cal and I are both in the path of that tropical storm- Tuesday night for us. I got more grass seed to sow and i'm going to wait until after Tuesday. I planted some a bit ago and we got hard rain and washed it into clumps. Looks funny! lol

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! I never thought in my whole life that we would own a riding lawn mower but Crow bought one Thursday! Just in time for our mow day! He woke me up at 7:30 to ask if I wanted to go to Home Depot with him. I asked what for? That's when he told me he was buying a riding lawnmower! He has been having a hard time mowing this summer. He thinks it's his hip. It hurts so bad that he almost falls down. So he researched and found that Troy built had a small 30 inch mower that was made for smaller yards. First he had to go rent a uHaul trailer and then pick up the mower. I didn't go with him. He was ready to go and didn't want to wait on me to get dressed and get Boo outside to potty. He came home a happy camper with a shiny new red mower. He studied the instruction booklet and then practiced riding it back and forth in the garage. Finally he felt confident and went to the grass. I laughed so hard when he took off down the side the yard. He looked like a bronco rider! His head was jerking back! It was hysterical! He got the yard mowed and it looked pretty good. He said he had so much fun! Later in the day  he took the uHaul trailer back to the rental store. While  he was sitting in traffic a kid behind him bumped into the back of the trailer! Only damage was to the kid's front Ohio license plate!

Ca, glad that Griz had a good vet visit. I don't know how we can ever get Boo back to the vet. Neither of us can pick him up to get him into the truck or the car. And he can't help himself either. He hasn't been able to jump in a long time. Sucks getting old for people and dogs.  Scary stuff having a snake bite you! Glad he wasn't poisonous!  The last snake I saw was at the cemetery a few years ago. My older sis is deathly afraid of snakes and when she saw the snake she froze! We got her out there fast! Sad to read about single cubs having such a hard time living.  :'(

Ra, yay, you finally have a working fridge! I never knew about using your washer when the power was out! Good info! Glad your daughter had a spare fridge! I hope I don't jinx this by saying Robin's fridge is probably next to go! She brought it with her from California when she moved back home. That was in 2002!  It's hot here today. Robin and Tasha are in the pool. Crow and I are inside in the air conditioning! I'll try and post a pic of creeping Charlie when I'm on my laptop. Unless Lupe beats me to it! Lol! Cool that your grand's boyfriend was on the news. I haven't watched a launch since the Challenger.

Lupe, what a joy for you to have Duke! Nice that his mom let him spend the night! We used to get so excited when Wilson got to stay with us! Now he never leaves! Lol! It was 7 years ago June 3rd when I found him stuck behind Robin's trash can!

Jo, wish I lived close enough that we could ride together. My bike is back up on the hook in the garage. :( Hope Joan is having a nice day. It's very hot here today. We had a cool down earlier in the week. Even had a record low 39 one early morning. Then Thursday we got over 3 inches of rain. Did you get rain that day? Looked like it was coming from your direction. We had a record rainfall for May...8.5 inches!

Have a nice day! Stay safe!

Daily Updates
Questions and a New Couple - UPDATE June 6, 2020
06 June 2020
 Print Email
Questions are coming in about Lily, Jewel, and Fern

Question: Is Lily still alive?
Here?s a video of Lily and her four yearlings? last sighting together on Wednesday evening May 13, 2020 from 7:53 PM to 8:35 PM https://video.nest.com/clip/9ad650d861774e2a90026c43d1da825f.mp4 They saw a couple of the yearlings alone on Sunday, May 17 and reported that ?family break-up has probably happened.? All the yearlings have distinctive blazes. WLily and her cubs
Lily and her cubs
e and the community will be keeping an eye out for Lily and her yearlings Marie, Kaiya, Dell, and Leroy. People are keeping records of these and other beloved bears in this community that has shown special caring about bears for over 50 years. It is an amazing story of peaceful coexistence. I don?t know of a more bear-friendly community. An example of that caring is the exquisite welcome set up for Lily and her yearlings as shown in the video. Lily is now 13 years old despite a major effort to gun her down in 2013 as shown in the BBC TV worldwide documentary ?Lily, a Bear with a Bounty? or the US version ?Lily, a Bear?s Life.? That effort was despite a judge?s order on July 28, 2013 for the DNR to discourage hunters from killing radio-collared bears. The effort resulted in 3 of our 8 remaining radio-collared bears being shot. We are glad Lily is still alive today

Question: Has anyone seen Jewel?
Jewel and four cubs
Jewel and four cubs
Yes! And her four cubs. Here?s a picture that someone from the community sent in two days ago. It is a profile picture of Jewel that shows the distinctive rounded bridge of her nose. The cub on the right is photobombing the camera with its tongue. This is the best view I?ve seen of the cubs. They look so much alike that it has been hard for anyone to determine the sex of each, so they are still unnamed. They have mostly been high in trees.

Question: What could have happened to Fern?s cub of last year?
I suspect that it was something like happened between Lily and Hope, but many such questions have gone unanswered without radio collars and den cams to provide answers. What we saw in 2010 and 2011 with Lily, Hope, Faith, and Jason was an amazing time of answering questions that we and other researchers could only speculate about before that. When a cub disappears, it isalways possible that a predator got it, of course, and we have documented that, but I believe that is uncommon based oTasha and Lucky
Tasha and Lucky
n the numbers. As we continue to document Shadow?s clan, we have seen that in litters of one, only 5 of 8 cubs survived their first year despite the mother having to keep track of only the one cub. In 7 litters of four, all 28 cubs survived their first year.

A new couple seems to be Lucky and Tasha. Tasha went from being terrified of Lucky to being bitten by him and now spending time by his pen and going nose to nose with him as shown in this picture and 12-minute video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAcLdptd_ac

Lucky still has his play partner Holly as shown in these short videos:

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- 62 and breezy here so I turned off the ac and opened a few windows. I need to go out and finish weeding in the barn garden and water a few new plantings. Duke went home in late afternoon-  I thanked his mom for letting us keep him overnight. It was nice to have him here- he is such a good boy. He is slowing down though- getting old- maybe 15? In the morning he slept for 4 hours in a row on his pillow and I wanted to go outside. In the past whenever I got up he did too. Yesterday he slept though my getting up several times. I finally picked him up (he really, really doesn't like to be picked up) and carried him outside.  Even then he stayed on the porch and sidewalk. Grass was wet.

While I was out yesterday 3 different groups of people- neighbors- walked by. One woman commented on the gardens and she noticed the flowers in the ditches. So nice to see people appreciating even the ditch!!! lol

So good to see jewel and her cubs. I really love the people of Ely!!!

rues- I can't believe crow rode his mower in the garage. Based on my abilities I would have totally demolished the building. When I got my ztr I needed an acre to practice in!

I may post a couple pictures if I can remember how!
Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies!   Another hot one here.  Don't know when I'll be able to mow, it's just too hot during the day and grass is too wet in the morning.  Maybe I need  a horse...

lupine... Yes, I have a LOT of creeping charlie!  Thanks for showing me what it is.  Your poppies are beautiful!  I see you have a lot of grass to cut, like cal.

cal... Love seeing all the bear moms having 4 cubs.  Not too long ago, we all thought how unusual it was for them to have 4, but now it seems to happen quite a lot.  I wonder why...  I don't think I've ever watched anything on bravo, so I've never seen your show Million Dollar listing.  Sounds something like House Hunters, only Mansion Hunters.   ;)

Hi to all and hope everyone has a nice Sunday!
