Good morning everyone- wow--jp- the card is wonderful--tytyty. Merry Christmas to you and Happy 2020!

ra- i'm impressed that you posted this early-lol  I'm so jealous that you continue to garden in December. It may be warm enough here next week to do a little trimming on ornamental grasses and asparagus.

Yes- Duke is here. Such a sweet boy he is. His Mom brought him while we were out delivering Christmas goodies. So fun to come home and he is here. He was sound asleep in the living room. Called his Mom because she forgot his pills. The friend who is checking their house while they're gone will bring them today. We just had a chicken, mozzarella omelet for breakfast. He is very patient- waits for his turn and does a great job of cleaning the dish at the end. We always joke that we could put the dish in the cupboard but we never really do!

Only one errand to run this morning- Duke and I will go pick up cupcakes for our luncheon dessert. Then I need to figure out the table cloth and plates. Hubby will do the meat and cheese plate. He is much better than I.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies!  Cloudy here today.  I'm getting some inside work done.

lupine... lol  Don't be TOO impressed with me getting up early... You noticed I wasn't very chatty, didn't you?  I'm not much of a morning person.  Couldn't sleep, so just got up.  Hope to sleep good tonight!

cal...  I like your new phone!  I saw those guys doing the circle thing at the game last weekend.  Glad they weren't doing it to be mean.

rues... Both of my cats hate the vacuum cleaner!  Lily taught Handsome to be very afraid.  lol  I don't see her for hours after I vacuum!  Handsome gets up on top of my kitchen cabinets and hides there!  lol  I wish they were more like Wilson!

Going to a Christmas concert this evening.  My Clemson grand's high school chorus teacher is getting all his best alumni together for it and having it at his church.  Just a tiny church... can't imagine how they're going to fit so many people in it.  Grand said there will probably be about 85 singers of all ages.

Johoward... Hope you and Joan are ok...

Have a good evening, everyone!

Daily Updates
Officially Winter - UPDATE December 21, 2019
21 December 2019
 Print Email
On this first day of winter (37?F), it was peace on earth and good will to mice at the Bear Center as Happycub captured the picture below of a deer mouse resting next to Ted. Deer buck and fawn
Deer buck and fawn

At the Wildlife Research Institute, the talk in the neighborhood is big antlers being dropped and younger deer still keeping their smaller racks. Out the window, I was surprised to see a fawn confidently come up to this young buck and touch noses. The picture that is partly cut off of the buck out the window shows a look of intense interest, I?d say.Young buck
Young buck

I?ve been light on updates lately in this time of writing with less to report about bears. We are worried about the total lack of sightings of minks and foxes lately. The birds and deer and squirrels are a delight.

Chickadee
Chickadee
An item I wrote lately was a Den Cam Permit Application I sent to the DNR a week ago. Haven?t heard anything yet. We?d like to put a camera in the den of Lily and her four cubs so we can all see how the bears interact and play when a person would think they would be conserving energy. The fact that yearlings play in dens is an indication of how important play is to bears, I believe. Play among small cubs is not surprising because they are not hibernating and are drinking milk and growing, but I was surprised to see play among Jewel?s yearlings back in 2013.

Ted with mouse
Ted with mouse
Professor Gordon Burghardt, perhaps the world?s leading authority on animal play, is senior-authoring our paper on the development of play among small cubs in dens. We?d like to add information on play among yearlings in dens to that paper or a separate paper.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- 34 here this morning and lots of stars. Duke and I have been out twice. He had to go the first time and the second time he just wanted to check out the cat food bowls. He thinks it would be a shame if any food was left unattended. Yesterday was so much fun. Since I had already made the chili and veg soup there wasn't much prep. Duke rode along all the while trying to look out the passenger window. He needed a big pillow to sit on. He stood up a bit but got tired. His little short legs are old and a bit gimpy. After we got home the morning was spent figuring out table linens- we decided on a red table cloth and I put 2 cloth Christmasy place mats in the center. Put the meat and cheese plate on the mats so we could all reach it. We used my snowmen pattern and polar bear pattern plates and mugs for the soup.  I got 6 different kinds of cupcakes from the bakery and set them in the middle of the table. We used knives to cut a piece to try. So good- flavors were peanut butter, eggnog, red velvet, cinnamon caramel, raspberry filled chocolate and peppermint. I had a sliver of each- we had very little left.
After lunch we sat in the living room. Duke made the rounds and got so much attention- he let everyone pet him- so well behaved. He only begged by me while we ate- and he quietly whimpered now and then just to let me know he was still sitting very cutely and wouldn't mind a small morsel of food.

After company left Duke was exhausted- I couldn't believe he slept so soundly all afternoon. Usually he follows me around. I'm never out of his sight. But yesterday I got out of my chair several times- Duke slept on. When hubby got his supper Duke slept on. Then when we went to be he slept 8 straight hours. What a guy.

Iowa played basketball last night- really low scoring game  50- 39 final score. I didn't stay up because it didn't start until 8 and I fell asleep in my chair just before 7. Close to my normal bedtime.

Steelers play the Jets today but no tv coverage. Will have to check andsee if the Chiefs are on.

ra- your concert sounds like fun- tell us all about it!

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! Well, winter is starting out very nicely...sunshine and 50 degrees! Weather guy says we will have a green Christmas! Yesterday Crow spent the afternoon at George's with a couple other retired guys from the plant. He came home in good spirits!  With him out the house, I finally made Chex party mix and peanut butter cookies. I still need to bake a batch chocolate chip cookies. Maybe do that later today if the mood strikes me!

Jp, thank you for the beautiful Jacquie Lawson card! Everything she does is so special! Merry Christmas to you, too! And a Happy New Year! :)

Cal, I didn't know they still made flip phones! Lol! Once I got used to my smart phone, I know I couldn't go back to the flip phone. Robin saw the Star War movie Thursday night! I haven't really talked to her much to see if she liked it or not. I'm sure she'll call later today to see if I'm fixing any kind of Sunday dinner! (Which I'm not!) I'll ask her then about the movie. I hope the DNR ok's Dr Rogers den cam. Did you see that PBS started Victoria reruns last Sunday? The new ones start next month, I think.

Lupe, I enjoyed reading about your day with Duke! What a sweetie he is. When we took the truck last week to get Robin's Christmas tree, I noticed Molly's nose smudges on the passenger window. I told Crow I will never wash that window again. He said, in time we will. :'(  Your holiday table sounds so pretty and festive! Bet everything tasted so good! I'd want a bite or more from each of the cupcakes!

Ra, how was the concert? Bet the kids sounded awesome! Our high school's  A Cappella Choir has a Christmas concert each year and they invite any of the former members to come on stage and participate in a couple of their traditional songs. Each year the stage gets more crowded than the year before! They sound amazing. The newspaper article I read about that movie theater said it was state of the art in 1938! Said it had nice comfort rooms for men and women. I'm guessing that's indoor restrooms! Lol!

Hope everyone has a nice Sunday!

Hi Jewelies!  It has rained this entire day!  I washed all my floors today and rearranged my sewing room since I was housebound.  The concert last night was great!  The chorus teacher retired a couple of years ago, but had spent his entire career in our little town.  Since it was an alumni chorus, he had all of the singers tell their name and what year they graduated.  The oldest guy graduated in 1978!!  He looked old!  Then, I realized I'm older than he is! lol  My youngest grand wasn't in it, she hasn't graduated yet, so she's not an alumni.  There ended up being around 50 singers and I could still hear my grand once in awhile!  lol  Don't know how she hits those very high notes, but she does an excellent job hitting them!  I saw people I hadn't seen in 25-30 years!!  I enjoyed it!

rues... It's going to be a green Christmas here, too, and almost 70o!!

cal... I get to watch the Chiefs tonight, too!  Next Saturday is semi-final day for the top four college teams.  GO Tigers!!  I wanted to watch Saturday Night Live, but I knew I wasn't going to last, so I recorded it and watched it today.  Eddie Murphy was so funny!  I always enjoy the Weekend Update part of the show, too.  That was good last night, too.  Have I told you that I like the cat's name, Cleocatra?  Witty name!  lol

lupine... Your luncheon sounded great!  I would have liked to have been in on the cupcake tasting!  Sounded like some tasty choices!!

Hi everyone!
