Daily Updates
2020 Calendars and Christmas Cards - UPDATE November 18, 2019
18 November 2019
 Print Email
2020 calendar

The Cards and Calendars are here and ready to go. Once again, Linda?s Calendar with Jim Stroner?s pictures is beautiful. Jim?s crisp pictures show Ted, Lucky, Holly, and Tasha more clearly than I could see them in person. Every hair is distinct. The cover picture of Ted clearly shows the white hairs of his 22 years and his eyes of love. Good job, team.Holiday cards

The Card reflects the beauty and soft snow of winter as a peaceful background for our four bears that the card brings together?another winner by Linda Gibson with Jim Stroner?s pictures.

You can find the calendar here: https://bear.org/product/2020-bear-center-calendar/

And the cards can be found here: https://bear.org/product/2020-holiday-4-bear-card-pack/

Remember to also check the other items for sale in the gift store, you will find many wonderful gift opportunities for the upcoming holidays!

I try not to tell about things I shouldn?t, but I can?t hold this one back. I love the idea for the 2021 calendar that could be available before summer. It will be about the life of our loving bear Ted, told with words and pictures of him over the years with a couple new pictures to be taken this coming spring. I love it. Ted is a one-of-a-kind bear who deserves his moment in the sun. It will be a collector ite for my library.

After I get my 100 calendars to share with Black Bear Field Course participants, there will be fewer than 500 available for sale. They are $13.95 each, and the cards are ten for $9.95.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- yay cal the Chiefs won. I watched the replay this morning on NFL network. I guess the NFL is trying to expand their fan base and make more money by having them play outside the USA.

johoward- I haven't seen anyone at snow's but I think it's my timing. Our pheasants here cam into our yard from our field on Sunday morning. Then they flew up into a tree which we don't see very often. I was thinking something must have scared them in the field. I wanted to go out to see but I had Duke and he wouldn't have been happy if I went out without him. Hubby was still n bed so I didn't want Duke to bark. After a little bit the pheasants flew back into the field. Very odd behavior.

ra- the lady I walk with has walnut trees in her yardand is getting it cut down shortly. She is tired of raking the nuts. The tree guy said he hopes to sell the wood. Our nut trees are on hubby's side of the yard and I think he just mows through them.

rues- the desk story was a hoot. Hubby and I don't work well together and I would have been laughing. cardinals may stay here all year but we don't often see them in the summer. I think our field gives them enough to eat in the summer so I don't keep my feeder out. Do you feed the birds all year?

9 minutes on x circles.
Animal visitors have been scarce at Snow.  I think they quit ground feeding corn to keep deer from gathering per DNR rules.  MI deer have shown some CWD, and it is contagious to deer.
It was a real treat to see the family of racoons and one doe last night.  I at first thought I saw a porcupine, but when I zoomed it became clear they were racoons.  Still a treat this time of year.  They must have been very hungry to come out in the cold.  I will keep watching, and hoping to see some porcupines too.
Joan is hurting a lot lately.  Her cortizone wore off.  Now the inflammation is back all over.  I don't know when she could have more cortisone, or even if she can.
She is finally stirring so I will say so long for a while.
Good bye and may the good Lord take a likin' to ya.

Daily Updates
Mink, White Pine - UPDATE November 19, 2019
19 November 2019
 Print Email
Stripe, the female mink, is coming about every day now. She takes bologna or mice under the front deck, out past the boiler shed, or down in the big brush pile. I think she is making this her winter headquarters. I hope she stays around until spring and has her 2-10 kits here so we can see them. Mink Stripe
Mink Stripe
They don?t come out, though, until they are weaned at 8 weeks, which would be mid-summer. That?s when they begin hunting for their own food. Maybe by then their mother will have given them a taste for bologna. We?ll see what happens.

Spencer sent this Bear Center trail cam picture and video of a buck about to chase a fisher away from the food a couple weeks ago. https://youtu.be/TYMElDIhyQw

Also sent to me recently, was this nice video showing Bob Leverett measuring and dedicating the 153-foot tall white pine the Eastern Native Tree Society named after me. Bob remarked that the tree has not increased in height for several years but has increased in girth (circumference a little over 11 feet) and surmises that that might also be true of me.

What I am wondering is when a tree will be named after Bob after all he has done to promote healthy forests as president of the Eastern Native Tree Society. The blurb by Bob that I put in the update of November 17 was the introduction to this video https://youtu.be/PFHS5mhIX1w about the dedication of the white pine that I?d like to go see and, of course, get together with Bob.

Bob and I first met back in the 1990?s when he heard about the nonprofit White Pine Society and my being named Minnesota?s Environmental Hero for ?crusading to preserve and regenerate Minnesota?s depleted white pine forests.? We talked further, including about bears. He knows many people, and he put together my first black bear lecture tour to several New England universities. It became an annual tour that spread to all the New England states with a leader in each state putting together the schedule and logistics for his or her state. Bob was the overall coordinator. Bob and the people who made that all happen are still friends today. However, in about 2004, I shifted full time to making the North American Bear Center and doing Black Bear Field Study Courses that make bear missionaries out of participants who then spread the truth about bears in their home areas.

I miss the fun I had with Bob and his family and friends when I stayed and ate at his house a lot during the lecture years. Good memories. Bob deserves a tree more than anyone, and I?d like to put a bee in someone?s bonnet in that direction, if possible.

Thank you for all you do.

good morning everyone- I think it is foggy here but I haven't been out yet. Am watching one of my favorite Hallmark movies. A Boyfriend for Christmas.  Not light out yet.

cal- I hope pete went to a good home too. I could never work at a shelter- would be too worried about putting pets in with someone who didn't fully understand the responsibility. I did volunteer at a shelter once but it wasn't a good experience for me- created tons of stress- I tried to educate and maybe I did some good. I did get a Persian cat that came in and couldn't walk. It was so matted it couldn't walk. Amazing. It took my sil and i two days of grooming to free this poor critter of the mats that kept it immobilized. She was a sweet little girl.

Today we plan of going to Cantril if the fog clears early- then lunch out. Fridge is empty.

Have a great day jewelies!

Set a record on circles today.  I won the booby prize. LOL  Thanks Cal.  That is a pretty funny picture when you get it clear.
Sorry Pete missed his chance at a good retirement home with AC and heated barn.  Too bad if he went to Sale Barn.  But hey, maybe some dad bought him to keep his autistic or otherwise special needs child company.  I will pray for that for Pete.
Joan still sleeping.  Some moaning but not too much.
Debbie, Joan,Kelly, Susie, and I all went to visit Bruce last night until late in the evening.  It was a good visit.  He was awake and alert.  Needed pain killer as we were leaving.  So he would probably drift off to sleep soon after.  It was almost 10:30 when we got home.  Very late for us, but not late for Bruce.  He is a night person.  Always has been.  Kelly and Susie are Bruce's two girls.  They live very far away, and Bruce does not see much of them.  This is a rare treat for us all.  Thank God for them coming here.
GTG God bless all in need today.
