Good morning everyone- 35 here and rain on the way; Great day for football- We couldn't believe how well Iowa played- kept thinking Minnesota would pull ahead but they never did. Duke watched the game with his eyes shut mostly- woke up when we yelled after a good play. For some reason we didn't sleep well last night. Been up since 2. An afternoon nap will be most welcome.

I'm watching a rebroadcast of tennis ATP semifinals which determine end of year standings. It was a round robin tournament and I don't really understand the way people move forward. Alexander Zverev and Dominic Thiem. The final today is on ESPN o ESPN 2 at noon today. Not sure of the players.

johoward- did you realize out teams play each other again on December 1st. ?What a schedule.

Duke goes home today- this afternoon. I'm sure his Mom will be glad to see him.

Have a great day jewelies!

Daily Updates
Pileated Woodpecker, Mink, Courses, White Pines, Nice Words - UPDATE November 17, 2019
17 November 2019
 Print Email
On the female forehead color of the pileated woodpecker of a couple days ago, two of you did some digging and came up with a scientific article that was published in the American Ornithological Society?s professional journal ?The Auk? in 1953. Entitled ?Forehead color of the pileated woodpecker,? it describes a captive female pileated White Pine at sunrise
White Pine at sunrise
woodpecker whose dark forehead became progressively more olive-brown and then yellowish-brown with each pre-nuptial molt until she was six years old and changed little after that. The yellowish-brown forehead I saw was the first I?d ever noticed. Thank you for the help. What a group!

Big day for red squirrels today?21 at one time. Stripe the mink visited, but 3 half-slices of bologna were enough for this little female this time.

Our cook for the courses, dear JM, caught a problem on our bearstudy.org website about accommodations for the courses. It mentioned bunk beds. We no longer have bunk beds. They are now all single beds?no climbing.

Today, I saw the newly completed 56:40-minute video on white pines created by the Eastern Native Tree Society and New England Forests. A trailer for the film is at https://newenglandforests.blogspot.com/2019/09/new-film-eastern-white-pine-tree-rooted.html. The film includes the history of white pines in bringing settlers to America from England and the major role they had in America?s first four centuries of development. I narrate the portion of it about the wildlife values of white pines--data that I developed as a U. S. Forest Service Research Scientist three decades ago?somewhat to my detriment?data that actually was confiscated by the USFS for a period back then before the top administrators who confiscated it were fired and my recommendations were accepted by the incoming administration. It was good to see this amazing video. I?ll post a link to it when I get permission.

It was also gratifying today as an 80-year-old to see nice words about my work for white pines written by Eastern Native Tree Society President Bob Leverett, who said:

?It is widely understood that Dr. Lynn Rogers has contributed much to our understanding of black bear behavior through his highly innovative methods. He is a true scientific pioneer. However, I feel especially grateful to Lynn for his understanding of the importance of mature white pines to black bears and then explaining it to the public. Lynn, more than any other scientist I know, came to understand this association and thus encouraged the protection of larger, older pines in Minnesota at a time when they were being eliminated with little thought to their roles other than as a timber species. Lynn well deserves the great white pine that we have dedicated to him in Mohawk Trail State Forest, Massachusetts. A great tree for a great man.?

I didn?t think I?d ever hear words like that! I couldn?t help but share them.

Thank you for all you do. I?m still reeling with the good feeling of support from you that went with GiveMN.

Lynn Rogers, Biologist, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center

Good morning everyone- Quiet here this AM- haven't been out yet.  I think it is great that Dr. Rogers got a tree dedicated to him. Wow!! I did kind of chuckle at the phrase- pre nuptial molt. I figured it meant before they are mature enough to mate but I was envisioning the wedding of two birds.lol

Duke went home last evening. His Mom said she is staying home for a long time now. I may have to get him for a day here and there so he remembers us. I saw our first cardinal yesterday.I hope he stays around all winter- a wonderful bit of color in the winter white and green.

Monday night football tonight- still find it hard to believe that the NFL feels it has to expand to other countries. Go Chiefs! cal- is everybody healthy and ready to play? Patrick??

Time for breakfast- have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! Nice sunny day here with a high in the low 60's. I can deal with that! Have you ever tried to get a piece of furniture through a doorway and it wouldn't fit? That happened to Robin and I yesterday. Her second bedroom had always been used as an office with a small wooden student desk, couch and 3 bookcases, no bed! She decided she wanted the desk out and to make the room into a reading/tv room. So we emptied out the desk, turned it on its side and attempted to go through the doorway! No matter how we positioned that desk it wouldn't go! Called Crow to come help us. We were sure he could figure this out. He ended up taking the bedroom door off and still that desk wouldn't go through! Called my sis to see if she remembered how we got that desk into the room because she was with us 13 years ago when we got the desk at a yard sale for $5.00! All she could remember was that we had the desk on its side. She laughed and said sounded like Robin's doorway shrunk! Finally ended up taking one side of the desk off and voila the desk went through! Crow was able to reattach the side and we moved the desk to its new home in the basement! Whew! What an ordeal. We worked on rearranging the room, cleaning out the bookcases and dusting and dusting! I finally left at 7pm. I was exhausted. Seemed we both went up and down those stairs which included the main staircase, the attic stairs and the basement stairs a hundred times! The room looks so warm and cozy now.

Cal, I didn't know until yesterday that the Mountaineers beat your team! Crow never mentioned it! He says our team is awful. He did see that fight last week and thought the guy should be banned from playing football. He showed me the fight online. I think so many people are angry now and they don't think about or care about  the consciences of their actions. Good idea...have Jim build a carport for Smokey!

Lupe, sorry that Duke had to go home! Time goes by so fast! Do cardinals migrate in your area? They are here year round. They do look so pretty in the snow. I always have a pair at my feeders. I like to think they are the couple that builds their nest in my yard each year!

Have a nice afternoon and evening! :)

Hi Jewelies!  Misty day today, so I worked on my quilts.    Maybe I'll get to rake more tomorrow...

rues... Had to laugh at your story about you and Robin trying to get the desk out of the room!  lol  No, I don't get any pecans off my tree... I usually have a few and let the squirrels have them, but this year I haven't seen a single pecan!  Maybe the squirrels are getting them in the tree or something.  To get good ones, you have to spray and fertilize and I'm too lazy to do that.  I'd just as soon buy them already shelled!  lol  Yes, I've been watching Blacklist now that football is over on Friday nights.  It's almost always confusing, so try my best to pay good attention.  I got one of those mattresses in a box for one of the girls' bed here.  It was amazing how little it was in the box, then open it up and voila!!  Nice and firm, too.

cal... Hope the Chiefs solved their penalty problems and get a win tonight!  Did you ask Jim about a carport?  I like mine.  Wish I had a garage though... so I could let Lily back outside!  lol  Game time!  Go Chiefs!!

Hi to lupine, Johoward, JP, obsver, Nora, and all the other Jewelies around!

Go Chiefs.  Do it for your most loyal fan, Cal.  What a good game.  Another great pass play.  Chargers are no push over. CAL!!!!!! Are you paying attention? Is Jim helping by rooting to? No dozing off.  Game is too close.
