Snowman has turkeys right now on table pecking corn.  Weather channel has shown Snowman cam yesterday and today.  How nice to see. The whole country sharing in our world.

God bless lots going on today.  Need to catch up on posts soon.

Hi Jewelies! It rained all day! Cold and miserable! Down to 22 tonight! The extended forecast into next year looks like a cold wet winter for us. Ugh. I need to bring my rain gauge in because it will freeze and crack if I leave it out. Probably be a good idea to put it away till next spring. I mentioned my sister's cat Shadow the other day. She had to have him put to sleep on Wednesday.  :'( He went into kidney failure. I have her other cat, W.C., buried in my cat cemetery under the grape arbor. Told her I'd go out and get a spot ready for Shadow but she decided to have him cremated.

Cal, loved the update with Sharon's bio! What a great job she has and what great job she does! Glad the beavers got their home all patched up! Smokey will look like a new car when it comes home! Is Smokey a boy or girl?  Sorry that dr told Jim's mom that! My mom always said you go when it's your time. Jim must be doing that prep now. Ugh. I don't envy him! The last one I did was when I was in the hospital. It's bad enough to do it at home but it's horrible to do it in the hospital!

Ra, surprisingly my hostas are still green! Must be because they are protected by the house and the porch! They we're saying the rain could change to snow flurries this evening but the rain has all gone past us now. Snow flurries are predicted next week. Yay, we are officially out of the drought now! Hope your hydrangea loses it's leaves before your glug glug gets worse! I noticed the tips of my hydrangea leaves got frost bit. It's been a few years since it has bloomed. I'm hoping that changes next summer!

Lupe, like Ra, my life is so boring compared to yours! Sounds like your friend had a good birthday. I think Duke is the perfect dog for you!

Jo, hope Joan is doing well!

Have a nice evening, Jewelies!

Daily Updates
A Shrike, A Deer, and A Dear- UPDATE November 7, 2019
07 November 2019
 Print Email
I forgot to include the northern shrike picture last night. It is perched high, scanning down for prey as is typical for them. It almost looks like a songbird, but then you notice the long hooked beak and know it?s a predator.Northern Shrike
Northern Shrike
In the winter they eat mice, voles, and small birds. I suspect it was looking for chickadees and nuthatches, but I?ve never seen a shrike catch anything here.

Today, a fawn buck with nubbin antlers was eating grass that will soon be covered with snow. That will mean deer must scrape away snow or eat less nutritious foods like twigs to minimize weight loss over winter. Around here, snow that is here in late November is generally still here in April.

For another kind of dear, it?s Donna?s 70th birthday, so tonight is date night. I hope she doesn?t mind that I gave away her age.

I?m happy to see the courses filling up with only 17 slots open yet. I?m looking forward to meeting new participants and catching up with old ones?and the bears! So many good memories. We?ll be looking for cubs here from 21-year-old RC, 4-year-old Rachel, 14-year-old Bow, 3-year-old Kim (Lily?s daughter), 4-year-old Lucy, 4-year-old Ethel, 4-year-old Clover (Fern?s daughter), 7-year-old Ember (June?s daughter), and 5-year-old Pixie.

No bear visits the last two nights.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- 14 here-Brrr!!! Duke and I got early this AM. Hubby was snoring and I heard Duke get up and move closer to me. We couldn't get back to sleep so we got up and watched part of Thursday night football.

rues- so sorry about your sister's cat. So hard. I went with my sil to Best of Iowa to have a cupcake and coffee. The person working there is the young woman who named Tank when he first arrived in the neighborhood. She innocently asked me how Tank was doing and I got all choked up and just walked away while my sil bought a cookie for her hubby. She caught up with me before we left and apologized for making me cry. We hugged and I said it's okay. It's just that he was so special. I guess more people knew Tank than I realized.

cal- had to laugh reading your post- couldn't figure out poop cookies. Duh-  Our weather guy also says to take advantage of Saturday too. For us football doesn't start until 3 so lots of time to do stuff. I need to figure out where i'm going to feed the birds. Hubby didn't like having the feeder so close to the house because it attracted coons and vermin. Well, I think they will be there anyhow- no matter where we put the feeder. But I have some ideas. Duke goes home either tonight or tomorrow.

Iowa basketball season starts tonight- 8 PM. Great time of the year with football and basketball with maybe a little figure skating in there.

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! I'm freezing to death! The sun has been out all day but the temp hasn't gotten above 30! I have that new furnace set on 72 but the house still feels so cold! Is it to soon to wish for spring?

Cal, the surgery center here won't let you drive yourself home after a colonoscopy! When Crow and my sister had their colonoscopies neither of them were able to drive afterwards. They were both groggy. Hope Jim's turns out ok. Each time Crow has had a scope they have had to remove a couple polyps. Cute fawn and shrike pics today. I've never seen a shrike. However, I have seen several fawns in my neighbor's yard! My sister picked me up this morning to go to Walmart. I could tell that she had been crying. She likes people to think she is tough, that nothing bothers her but I know better. She said she has never cried so much in her life as she has for Shadow. The funeral home called yesterday afternoon saying that they could pick him up. She picked out a pretty wooden box for his ashes. She said Mike, her hubby, goes to the bathroom and cries. He won't cry in front of her. She gave me a big jug of kitty litter, kitty treats and Fancy Feast cat food for Wilson. I have to watch Sheldon on my iPad later because I watched A Place to Call Home on PBS last night. Blacklist tonight!

Lupe, sounds like Tank was a special kitty to many people. He was so lucky to have found you and your warm, loving home. Hope Duke gets to stay one more night!

Have a nice evening!

Good morning everyone- 30 here and breezy and from what the weather guy said- Enjoy this day- going to get cold!

cal and rues- Duke did go home last night; his Mom and human sister came about 7:30. He was sleeping on his pillow( aka chair back); he was so sound he didn't hear them come in. I told them to come into the living room- they laughed and it took Duke awhile to wake up and realize his Mon was there.  So funny- He comes again next Wednesday for 4 nights. We do enjoy having him here.

Hawkeye basketball team won last night; many new faces; will be a fun year; our senior point guard had hip surgery in May so he is questionable for this season. Just have to wait and see.

Hawkeye football is at 3 PM and Iowa State is around the same time. I'll get to see some of you wildcats game.

hubby going to a sale today-they listed a 1948 Willys Jeep- would be fun to have. We'll see.

Have a great day jewelies!

Good morning, Jewelies!  Pretty chilly here this morning.  Our first real freeze, I think.

cal... I thought the Wildcats were up to number 16... maybe I read it wrong.  Clemson is at NC State today at 7:30 on ABC.  Lots of good games today.  LSU and Bama on at the same time as your game.

rues... So sorry to hear that your sister lost her Shadow.  Did we all have a cat named Shadow at one time or another?  My Shadow was one of five that I brought from MI when we moved here.  I didn't know that a funeral home would cremate a pet.

I can't seem to be able to sleep in lately... I'd much rather sleep till 9 or 10!  I don't know what changed!  Oh, well... I'm up!  Have a good day, Jewelies!  Hi to all!

cal... I've been watching Penn State (4) vs Minnesota (17).  It's been a good game!  Minnesota has been ahead for most of the game... score is 31-26 with less than 4 minutes left.

Penn State lost!  Ohio State was trouncing Maryland, so they'll probably stay at number 1.  LSU / Bama is coming up next, along with the Wildcats.  Maybe Clemson will move back up to the top 4.  Have to win our game first though...  lol    GO TIGERS!!
