Bears, Beavers, Birds, and a Big Buck - UPDATE November 3, 2019
03 November 2019
 Print Email
The pretty bear Scaredy Cat made two visits last night as recorded by our Eyes of the Night, Peggy Stubb, the assistant bookkeeper. 10 point deer
10 point deer
She also caught a brief visit by a magnificent 10-point buck around midnight. Peggy stays up most of the night until she wears out. That kind of watchfulness is over for a few weeks now, though, while she heads home to catch up there before returning to catch up on bookkeeping here around the end of the month. The buck was good to hold fairly still to minimize blur from the slow shutter speeds of night photography.

The winter flock of black-capped chickadees is back and hungry for sunflower seed hearts to keep them warm through winter nights. I haven?t gone out to see if any remember sitting on my hand from last year and am looking forward to seeing if I recognize some from little markings.Chickadee
Chickadee

The beaver lodge across the little lake out the window had some action last night as evidenced by dark, muddy paths up both sides and on the front. The lodge is surrounded by thin ice that includes the winter food cache. Surrounding the thin ice is blackish ice that also would not be good to walk on. I don?t know if the paths up the sides of the lodge are from beavers adding mud or just walking up and down it for reasons I don?t know. The path up the left side is to where the fisher was sniffing down an air hole a few days ago before moving to another air hole and then off into the wild.

Wow! The Black Bear Field Study Courses are over two thirds full already with about 21 slots to fill yet on www.bearstudy.org.

I just learned that we are extending the deadline for accepting recipes for the new recipe book to the end of November. I remember how good the last recipe book was and am looking forward to getting (or maybe Donna getting) this one. Click here to submit a recipe.

Thank you for all you do.

good morning everyone- the picture of the buck on the update reminds me that I saw a buck in our field north of our house last week. There are a lot of places to hide in that area- big trees and cedars to bed down under. Be safe!
cal- we had a penny candy store too- what fun to spend a dime... so many choices.

ra- we did go for a ride. Went to Muscatine and across the Mississippi then south through Illinois. There were some very pretty trees but I forgot my camera. How did that happen? We drove through several little towns on the river- stopped at New Boston to watch a tug pushing barges north. The tug was out of Marquette, Iowa. At that point the river was really moving- current very strong and river still high. We ended up going to Burlington for lunch- ate at the Coal Haus- coal fired pizza, coal fired cooked everything. Hubby had a calzone and I ate chicken wings and a salad of romaine, roasted beets, blood orange, feta and prosciutto. Very good and filling- but a bit pricey.

We missed the Steeler game yesterday but they won! And Chiefs won! Best news was the Patriots lost to the Ravens. lol

time for breakfast- need to clean today- Duke coming this afternoon for the whole week- YAY!

Have a great day jewelies!

A Beaver Secret Revealed - UPDATE November 4, 2019
04 November 2019
 Print Email
Yesterday I wondered why the beavers were making paths up the outside of their lodge. Today, they spent the day showing me. Beaver at lodge
Beaver at lodge
Three beavers repeatedly dove down and grabbed vegetation and mud from the bottom of the lake and walked armload after armload of it up the paths to the top of the lodge. They emerged from the water walking upright, using only their back legs to walk up the steep sides of the lodge with their very short arms holding the load against their jaws and cheeks. The picture, taken from over a tenth of a mile away, shows that the best I could.

I had always assumed that beavers carried mud in their mouths and had to walk on four legs. At one point today I saw two beavers walking up a path side my side, both on their hind legs.

One of the beavers also spent time on the food cache eating branches that were above water. Later they will be swimming out from the lodge underwater, nipping off branches, and carrying them into the lodge to eat the bark and cambium as we observed on a beaver cam (webcam) that was in this lodge 20 years ago. Scenes from those old videos now play in the Northwoods Ecology Hall of the Bear Center after playing for years in the Duluth Aquarium.

Ten pounds disappeared off the scale last night, which could be two bears. Could Limpy have come back in addition to Scaredy? This inquiring mind wishes he knew.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- 25 here and partly clear sky.It went up to 40 yesterday so I took advantage and washed a part of our vinyl siding on the north side of our house when green moldy stuff was growing.  That  is a new development for us though I've seen it on other people's houses. I used a cleaner that we got at menard's- took it right off. Also got the bathroom cleaned and floors scrubbed.

Duke and I have been out a couple of times already- my 2 outside guys aren't bothered by him at all. They just watch him even when he gets close.

Today we are celebrating the 80th birthday of a friend of mine. She is the person I went to the Rose Parade with. Her actual birthday was yesterday but our senior strength class is having a party after class. She is diabetic and limits sweets so I found a brunch recipe for an egg, ham and cheese roll. I took the recipe to my friend at Second Street Sweets and asked if she could make it. She said yes. And i'll get a half dozen rolls to share too. Someone is bringing some fruit and of course we'll have coffee as always.

Have a great day jewelies!

Good morning everyone- warm here- 40 and a bit windy at times. Duke and I have been up awhile.  When I went back in to the bedroom to get Duke down from the bed I chuckled to see he was snuggled up to my hubby. Very cute. I always take him out soon after we get up. No stars this morning but no snow like in  Decorah.

We had a great time after class- the ham and cheese omelet roll was fabulous and the cinnamon rolls and fruit were yummy. We also had sparkling pumpkin beverage and a raspberry daiquiri sparkling drink. All non-alcoholic. And coffee of course. When I returned the pans to my friendly neighborhood baker I told her she made 10 people very happy. She said oh I think you could have made that recipe. lol She has never seen me in thekitchen.  My now 80 year old friend was very happy; many stories were told and lots of laughs were shared.

Don't know what is in the works for today. I do need to dust. How long can that take.??

I asked Sharon how she became the bear keeper at NABC when I visited there in 2018. Really fortunate for all of us, bears included, that it happened. I didn't know Honey but can understand how difficult the loss was. I still check in on Ted every day.

About time for breakfast- have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies!  Nice sunny day here today.  Going down into the 20's soon though.

cal... You changed your avatar!  Kinda different...  lol Can you believe Clemson is undefeated and is ranked 5th in the BCS??  Ohio State is #1??  That's weird.  Can you believe the Patriots lost?  I watched the game and couldn't believe how "normal" they looked.  lol  Probably a good idea to have someone else fix Smokey, especially if it's only going to cost you your deductible.  When are you supposed to get it back?   The update pics have been awesome lately!

lupine... It sounds like you had quite a ride on Monday!  You sure stay busy with the birthdays, community doings, rides, etc!  Makes my life look so boring!  lol

rues... Still waiting for our killing frost.  It should show up later this week.  I've been watching my outside plants, but they're still ok.  I did cut down my hostas today... they looked like they got a little nip, but not bad.  I think I need to have my septic tank emptied or something... my toilet is making "glug, glug" noises.  lol  The thing is... the access is under my hydrangea bush and we won't be able to find it until the leaves are gone.  Shouldn't be long now...  lol

Hi to everyone!

Daily Updates
BBC, Bears, Beavers, and Birds - UPDATE November 6, 2019
06 November 2019
 Print Email
Last night my computer was tied up downloading a 1-hour documentary that the BBC aired a couple nights ago. 20191106 Pileated male
20191106 Pileated male
It is part of the Natural World Series called Meet the Bears and is about all 8 species of bears around the world. Much of the black bear part is of radio-collared study bears including Lily. They did a terrific job. No sensationalism. No people. Just natural history about how bears across the world have overcome the challenges of life.

Bear visits here might be over for this year. After I lamented about the lack of eyes in the night to record visits, snow came. Tracks showed the usual travel pattern of Scaredy. Then Mike and Lorie put up a trail cam to see why food disappears on the scale when there are no bear visits--deer. No bear visits last night. This is already late in the year, and I suspect they have called it a year.

Red breasted nuthatch
Red-breasted nuthatch

Following up on the beaver activity of a couple days ago, I have never seen activity like that before, and their timing was perfect. They worked hard patching the top of the lodge with mud and wet vegetation from the bottom of the lake. It was their last chance, and they worked like they knew it. That night, cold swept in and froze their last part of the lake, likely preventing any more such activity for the rest of the winter. The mud and vegetation they put in place also froze, making a shell that any land animal would likely not be able to crack. I was a little worried before I saw them working because earlier that morning I think I saw three otters by the lodge but couldn?t be sure what they were from over a tenth of a mile away through dense snowfall. From their agility on land, I believe they were otters, and otters can kill beavers. So I was happy to see the three beavers working. I did wonder if the presence of otters stirred them to patch and shrink their air holes on top of the lodge.

Yesterday, I held out my hand with sunflower seed hearts and within five seconds a nice male red-breasted nuthatch accepted my invitation, followed immediately by a chickadee.

Intermittent sun today made bird colors glow, especially blue jays and the crest on the male pileated woodpecker. One would expect that of the blue jays because they don?t have blue pigment and their color comes from how their feathers reflect light.

The first shrike I?ve seen in years, an adult, perched in the sun right outside my window today. Their summer range is the boreal forest and tundra edge to the north. Here it is near the northern edge of its winter range.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- Cold here 20 with a north wind. Duke and I made our trips fairly short the AM. Yesterday was pretty nice- we went out and just puttered around. I picked up sticks- made a pile to burn. Checked the cat beds. Duke was fun outside- he's get distracted by something then have to run to find me. He looks so cute running with his ears flapping.  I think hubby really likes Duke- always saves a bit of his meal for duke to finish. It's really nice to have a critter in the house and for the most part duke is very quiet here. Apparently he barks a lot at home especially if his mom isn't home. Sometimes during the day if I let duke out by himself he barks to be let in. But just one bark and i'm there.

I put out my suet feeder but haven't seen any woodpeckers yet like Dr. Rogers. I think I mentioned about putting Irish Spring soap on an evergreen that the deer have messed up by rubbing the velvet off their antlers. I put it around the south side which was really trashed. Well... now the booger is using the north side of the tree so more Irish Spring went on that side. Pretty soon i'll be able to add lights and say Merry Christmas!lol

Have a great day jewelies!
