Hi Jewelies! Our weather man just said it is a beautiful blue sky day with near 70 temps. My kind of day. Chiller temps with rain over the weekend. I have some yard work to do but will wait until we get a killing frost that kills everything back. We picked up Molly's ashes last Friday  :'(.  Yesterday we sprinkled her ashes in all her favorite areas of the backyard. I thought it would be hard to do that but it turned out to be calming. I'm glad we did it. I've filled up 2 memorial shadow boxes with her things.

Cal, that poor goat! Glad he was rescued. That snake knows your barn is good place to live! Hope he finally gets the hint that he is not welcome! Bet Jim's mom is so happy to be going home. Hope everything goes well for her now.

Ra, one Saturday each month our landfill is free for county residents to unload their household junk.      I'm sure they have a limit on what or how much you can dump. I don't ever want to go there again! Our weekly trash guy takes just about anything we set out for him if he can pick it up! We have recycle pick up, too. But limited to only glass, #1 and 2 plastics, aluminum, newspaper and cardboard. Not many in my neighborhood bother recycling even though the city charges $2.50 each month on the water bill for recycling! I don't know if Wilson has seen the raccoon! Chances are he has.

Lupe, that Start Tv sounds like a channel I would like! I loved Cagney and Lacey. I always buy cage free organic chicken breasts and we get our eggs from Crow's friend who raises free range chickens.    Crow always laughs at me when I say I wish meat grew on bushes.

Jo, hope you and Joan are doing well!

Hi, Jp! Hope you are having a nice day!

See you later!

Daily Updates
Is Tasha Calling it a Year? - UPDATE October 24, 2019
24 October 2019
 Print Email
A little update on Tasha is that she is mostly staying near the dug den we think she will use for hibernation. Sharon?s news of several days ago gives some history.

Oct. 20, 2019 - Bear News

The announcement and anticipated wait for a yearling we formerly called Kentucky bear; came to fruition on June 6, 2016. Her previous guardian had called her Tasha; she knew her name so we didn't change it. Tasha through her humorous actions with her water tub has lightened hearts all over the world.Tasha in her tub
Tasha in her tub

Tasha in tub with water

Tasha is very dramatic and if no one pays attention to her she will pull her toes up to her chest and rock. We respectfully call her our "drama queen". If that doesn't get attention, (which if usually does) she puts her paw over her head and contorts her body. It?s always time to move to her on the behind?the-scene tour when she starts acting. One of her most endearing actions is she suckles her food, such as yogurt raisins and hums while sucking her paw. It?s the sweetest sound when approaching the dens and hearing her humming like a cubby, makes my job the best.

When I began working with Tasha she would always want to play. She played tug of war through the fence with anyone strong enough to challenge her. She uses logs, tubes and balls as play items when she has them. Tasha enjoys eating and often paws the fence indicating she wants more. She was raised with a dog and mimics a behavior as a dog would when wanting a treat.Tasha's footprint

Tasha is apt to ?ask? for a back rub as Holly does. This action prompts immediate response and direction for me to get busy. She will put her paws on my hands and gently guide them to where she wants them, especially around her ears. No one else does this except the 2 females. It?s a very privileged event to do this for them. Those paws and claws rip open logs, dig dens, move large rocks and climb trees and yet never leave a mark on my hands when scratching either bear.<Tasha with a dirty belly

Tasha has always used a dug den rather than a man made den. This year she has focused on two different areas. One area that she started has a large root in her way. Her previous dug den is what I feel she will use. She is preparing it. The water that was in the bottom of it has now dried and she is adding leaves, twigs and the straw we provided her with. This is the first year she has used straw.

Our little Tasha bear out weighs Holly by many pounds. Play will still happen in the spring, I'm sure; but as Tasha matures, the challenges of the enclosure heightens. For now, she's just a sweetheart and many of her behaviors mimic Ted. Her eyes are kind, her personality is kind and she reflects many actions that our Ted bear has. I think I like my Tasha bear. :)

At the Bear Center we are gearing up and getting ready for Give to the Max Day. The date is November 14th, and I'll be here to help raise money for our bears.

Thank you for all you do,
Sharon Herrell, Sr. Bearkeeper

A couple days ago at the Bear Center, Ted got a taste of Halloween with a special pumpkin filled with peanuts that he is reaching with his tongue.

Out the window here at the WRI, the bear we think is Fred stopped by again this evening and is his good old self. I?m very happy that he is among the survivors and hope to see him a lot next summer

Also, out the window, a block of suet brought the male pileated woodpecker back today. Last night, Fred sniffed the suet but decided to leave it for the birds, although he would have been welcome to it if he wanted.

Thank you for all you do.

good morning everyone- chilly here but normal temps. I loved the update- Tasha is so cute and that Ted with his pumpkin. Just imagine being able to give a good scratch to a bear! I would like to be in Sharon's shoes for that.

yesterday I spent a little more time cutting back hostas in the barn garden. I didn't used to necessarily cut them back just raked stuff off in the spring but I read an article a couple of years ago that said that if there is any disease it could over winter so I decided to start cutting them back. I almost have the pickup full. I've never lost a plant to disease but don't want to start now.

rues- so glad your spreading of Molly's ashes was calming for you. Hubby found a huge heavy stone on our minimum maintenance road just south of our house. He brought it in and we put if on Tank's grave. Still grieving.

Today is a busy one- spin this morning then i'm meeting a friend for lunch at a Mexican restaurant. She is getting ready to retire next month so i'm excited to hear what her plans are. don't know if i'll get any yard work done- our lunches usually take 3 hours.  Then our local Heritage Society has a soup supper fund raiser tonight. They have chili and potato soup, sandwiches and desserts. Always like a day when I don't have to cook!

Have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies!  It's been pretty nice here, cool and sunny, but showers in the forecast for the next week.  I've been working outside a lot.  Dug up a bunch of daylilies, put down 10 bags of mulch, and a whole bunch of rocks.  I have some rocks left, but I have to another trip to Lowe's for more mulch.

cal... No high school game to go to tonight... it's away.  Just one more home game, unless we have a home playoff game.  I was looking at tomorrow's football schedule and hoping I get to watch your game on ABC.  Clemson's game is at home against Boston College at 7:30, but it's supposed to be raining, so it might be one of those messy games.  I was surprised to hear that Mahomes might play this weekend!  Seems like he would need more time to rest his injuries, even if he's young and heals faster.   Love hearing about Tasha in the update today!  Ted's coat reminds me of a stuffed animal... it's so thick and shiny!  Pretty!

lupine... Sounds like you'll have a fun day today!  Lots of good eats, too!  I can't wait to hear what you had!  I always cut my hostas back in the fall, too.  It's been chilly here most mornings, but we haven't had a killing frost yet.

rues... What kind of trip does Robin have planned next?  It's always fun to hear where she goes.   :)    Is she dressing up for Halloween this year?  Clemson grand is getting out and meeting new people and is having a lot more fun now that she doesn't have a boyfriend.  lol  Youngest grand is still "in Love" (with a capital L).  lol   She has to go to see her guy almost every day!  He goes to a different high school, so they just have after hours to get together.  They're both very focused on their grades, that's a good thing.

obsver... I hated to miss the Masked Singer this week because of baseball!  Sure do like that show!  Have you got any ideas about who the singers are yet?

I hope Johoward, Joan, JP, Nora, and other MIA Jewelies are doing good!

Have a good evening!

Geez, cal... Time to break out the bubble wrap suit again!!  Sweets needs to go to behavioral classes!!  What a bugger he is!  Is your face ok??  The Chiefs backup QB was pretty good last week... I think Patrick needs to have a little more healing time.  I hope I get to see Sammy play this week!  Been waiting a long time to see him in action...  lol

Do you guys realize that Christmas is only two months away??  Yikes.  Where did this year go??

Good morning everyone-  yesterday was beautiful here-perfect for doing gardening chores to get ready for winter. My class was cancelled because our teacher is sick. I wasn't surprised. she also teaches our Thursday class and I could tell she didn't feel good. So I used that bonus morning to put away some books my friend Tammy gave me to read and pass on; then I went to the garden.

I had a California burrito- very good; chips and salsa and water to drink. We had a good visit; they sold their house in 3 weeks and have moved into a condo until they get their duplexes built. Her hubby is a builder so it doesn't sound as overwhelming to them as it would to me. She's only been in the condo a month and she's ready to get out. Our next get together will be after she retires- a celebration!

Last evening it was a big bowl of chili and pumpkin cake for dessert. They also had sandwiches and relishes. The supper was held at the senior center in town and we saw lots of people we see infrequently. Lots of fun. Since I don't typically eat an evening meal I woke up this morning absolutely ravenous. But I have to wait. This is the morning for our fire department breakfast. It is from 6 AM to 11. Since hubby doesn't  get up until  7:30 it will be a late (for me) breakfast. We have gone at 11 and treated it as lunch. So we'll see.

After lunch yesterday I got lots more done in the barn garden. I had to empty the pick up because I was having to stack stuff really high. So will start with an empty truck today. I'm hoping to finish today- maybe. Football starts at 11 so we'll see.

Have a great day jewelies!
