Hi Jewelies! Thanks everyone for your kind words. Trying to get back to normal but that's easier said than done. The house is so quiet.  I've been very busy cleaning out cabinets and tossing out a bunch of expired foods! I've been meaning to clear out old paint cans in the basement corner for a couple years...got that accomplished this afternoon! Got rid of old stiff, dried up paint brushes, too.  Had frost overnight but it didn't do any damage. Got up to 70 this afternoon.

Cal, did you get to watch Blacklist? Thanks for the Decorah info. I remember when Holly came to the center. She sure has a better life now.  Today was Bridge Day and I forgot all about it! Remember it's the only day of the year that you can legally jump off the New River Gorge Bridge. It was supposed to be a beautiful day there.

Ra, yep, I watched football all day! Lol! I could hear some game going on while I was on the opposite side of the basement clearing out those paint cans. Crow said lots of bad words so I knew he wasn't pleased with someone! Lol! Glad you are getting rain. We aren't supposed to get any of that rain from the Gulf but some of our southern counties are.

Lupe, that's a lot of shingles to throw out! I've been there and done that before! My mom, sister and I unloaded our old shingles at the landfill. Back then it was called the dump! Crow was at work and Robin was in kindergarten. Our truck was just sitting there loaded down with shingles. My sis said why don't we take them to the dump? I promised myself I'd never do that again! Lol! Glad that your roof is finished!

Jo, glad that Joan has some pain relief!

Jp, did you get any rain from that tropical storm?

Have a nice evening every one! :)

Hi rues... How are you getting rid of your old paint cans?  There are lots of laws down here about how to get rid of it.  Just trying to get some tips for myself.  lol  I brought my one lone house plant in the house this week.  Can't believe I have the heat on already.  You guys have heard about my daughter's bad luck, right?  Last night they turned their heat on... it was only in the 50's in the house this morning... Their furnace fan went out and the new part won't be here until Monday or Tuesday.  All I can do is shake my head at their luck!

Good morning everyone- I haven't been outside yet so don't know the temp. Yesterday I fed my 3 outside guys and when I checked on them a bit later they hadn't eaten all their food and were intently staring at the sidewalk. I got the flashlight out and there was a half grown raccoon. Now I know some of us wouldn't mind feeding the little guy but I would have a whole herd of raccoons eventually. So I will feed later when it gets light.

Yesterday I spent the morning cutting back plants in the barn garden. I just made piles and will load them into the pickup next week. It started  to drizzle early and we had gentle rain most of the day. Have lots more to cut back but next week should be nice.

Football started at 11 and we watched most of the day; watched the first half of the Penn State game against Michigan then I went to bed. Illinois sure upset Wisconsin.  Cyclones and Hawkeyes were on at the same time. Tried to watch both.

johoward- so glad the shot worked for Joan. Your comment about the fish fry brought back very old memories of growing up. My Dad alwayswent to the local fire station and brought home fish sandwiches on Fridays! Sure was a treat.

rues- we used to call it a dump too but I guess landfill is more correct these days. Good for you getting cleaning done. Going to the landfill was a pleasant experience. The lady in the office was super nice and they had big equipment pushing the stuff and getting it ready to cover it up. Pretty amazing- didn't even smell too bad either.

Time for breakfast- still daek out- have a great day jewelies!

Hi Jewelies! Turning out to be a nice day after morning sprinkles. Had a mess to clean up on the deck this morning. I think a raccoon keeps digging in my flower pots. He digs all the plants and dirt out. My neighbor told me that a raccoon family is living in the abandoned house next door to him. He thinks they are the culprits. I did notice my bird bath's water was dirty and had dirty paw prints on the rim!

Cal, I saw on the news where that covered wagon turned over at the WVU game! Crow didn't see it, he had changed the channel! He is such a fair weather fan. Glad no one or any horses were injured.

Ra, our trash hauler will take paint cans as long as the lids are off and the paint is dried. Once or twice a year DuPont has a county wide paint/ hazardous waste pick up at one of the local high school stadiums. Eventually every thing in your daughter's house will be brand new and the black cloud will float away!

Lupe,  last summer, year ago, Robin cleaned out her basement. So we loaded up the truck with mostly junk, nothing bulky, and took it to the landfill. They gave us hard hats and lime green vests to wear while we were unloading the stuff. Kinda creeped me out, wondering who had worn those things before us! They did give us throw away hair nets!  I did look around and noticed some pretty nice  things that others had thrown out! Lol! You know the saying...one man's trash is another man's treasure!

Have a nice day Jewelies! :)

Hi Jewelies!  Pretty nice here this afternoon, after the rain moved out.  This weekend was our Oktoberfest and it was so bad Saturday, that they closed down everything for the first time ever.  Can't run the rides in the rain.  I hope the crafters didn't have their crafts ruined.  I wonder what the churches that feed everyone will do with all the leftover food.  I hope they cook it and have it for sale at their churches or something.  Love their German food!

cal... Did I hear right?  Mahomes will be out for 3-6 weeks??  Awww....  Did you see that Clemson dropped down to number 4 this week?  I wonder what would happen if we lost??  It's Bama, LSU, Ohio State, then Clemson.  Next weekend Bama and LSU play, so maybe we'll move back up.  I saw that wagon flip over, too!  Glad nobody was hurt!

rues... Has Wilson seen the raccoons?  That would be exciting!  lol  We used to call our landfills dumps, too, in MI.  Ours is real strict here and they never have a county wide event.  I wouldn't wear an outfit that someone else had worn.  Ick.  I've only been to ours once.  I either burn all my sticks and trimmings, or put it in a pile at the corner of my lot.  This year, I'm trying to eliminate burning.  The pile that I have going is also a bunny home.  I've seen them running out once in awhile when I go to dump something off.  I think it's cute and makes me feel good for providing them a home.   ;)

Hope everyone is well and has a good night!

Daily Updates
Beavers and a Quest for Color - UPDATE October 20, 2019
20 October 2019
 Print Email
When the morning sun hit the beaver lodge out my window, it looked different than I?d ever seen it. It was nearly buried in fresh black mud that busy beavers had piled onto it overnight.Ruffed grouse

I don?t see a winter food cache in front of it yet, but I believe the rejuvenation of this lodge on Woods Lake is a sign they are reverting back to it after years of using an alternate that is visible out the window in the marsh. The rejuvenated lodge was built in 1977 according to the former owner here. The picture of the alternate in the marsh on Little Woods Lake here doesn?t show any sign of work that I could notice.

That made me want to check two other beaver lodges on this beautiful, calm, sunny day. The new beaver lodge in my bay on Eagles Nest Lake One of recent years had as many as 5 beavers near on one day this past summer. The picture shows it framed by tamarack trees with the remains of last year?s food cache in front of it.

I then drove up to the north end of Eagles Nest Lake One to check the beaver lodge that was active in the 1990?s and 2000?s, but it is now disintegrating and has weeds and bushes growing on it. So I guess on that lake, they are sticking with their latest and newest in my bay.

Nearly all the leaves are down. The scattered trees that are still covered with bright yellow leaves are mostly birches. Yellow bushes are mostly willows. Tamarack trees with their yellowish gold needles are the most prominent color.

Then there were the exceptions. I drove to the overlook that is a mile and a quarter from here as the crow flies, and there were a couple aspens in full color against a background with miles of leafless aspen and birches.

Driving back to the WRI cabin, there were a couple dazzling gems of color remaining. One was a couple of backlit blueberry leaves that glowed bright red. Blueberry leaves backlit

The other was a small branch of backlit northern red oak leaves glowing on a tree whose other leaves were brown and shriveled after being smooth and deep red a couple weeks ago.

Near the driveway, a grouse was taking refuge on this safe property during grouse hunting season. All I could see was its camouflaged head and neck as it watched me roll down the window and click. I don?t see many grouse right here.

We?re seeing the last of the color here.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- warm and rainy here- windy too. About 6 AM I heard cats fighting on the back porch. We t to investigate and there was a stray- poor spitty- he was okay- stray ran away. So I sat on the porch and fed shadow and spitty. Don't know where I got 3 outside cats yesterday cal. Slip of the fingers or a ghost in my keyboard.lol

Yesterday was a pretty day so we went for a little ride to a new squash farm west of Cedar Rapids. It wasn't as good as our old one; this one was more pumpkins than eating squash but I got a few. The charge was 50 cents a pound- pretty good. I spent a whole $6.50. Then we had Chinese food. I ate shrimp and veggies- brought half of it home and all the rice for hubby to eat. I got hot and sour soup instead of egg drop. It was really sour and spicy hot so hubby got that too. Didn't taste too bad but I wasn't sure of the ingredients- msg bad for me.

cal- so glad jim got the goat free; liked your last comment!!lol

ra- we do burn some here too and then I burn small sticks; our charges for our landfill are pretty reasonable. Our haul last week was $47. That included all the shingles and 5 tires. So glad to get rid of that much.

rues- there was a sign at the landfill- No Scavenging!- apparently that has happened there. My biggest problem with landfills is thata lot of stuff  put in there could be recycled. Makes me mad but to have a person there to sort while the people dump would be costly and i'm sure not many people would want that job.

Have a great day jewelies!

hi lupe that is a bargain what you paid at the dump! did you get spitty and shadow barn set back up? your raccoon could keep that stray at bay. racconie or stray if tim ever gets his head stuck in that fence fix that electric fence! bzzzzzzzz i think lots of chinese food high in msg its bad for me too so is sodium.  long time ago they use to have jims mom and dad set oit recycle stuff plastic here glass thete then stopped and just dump everything at the ....dump.

ra i went to walmart this morning on the way news said timeline change on patricks return now 3 weeks or sooner. lola said he is going to keep it up and could end up having to end his career. at 22 you think nothing can happen to you you are fearless i was. so we will see i knew it would kill him to not play lets hope chiefs get him lots of protection. protect your qb protect the cheetah too.
