Ursula.

Greetins guys and dolls.  We are zooming our way to the end of August.  Not even a full week left.

The Marlins, hitless wonders, found out that you can't win with only 2 hits.  They lost 4-0.  Still, they won 2 of 4 from the division leaders.  Now, they go  to play the team with the best record in all of baseball, Boston Red Sox.

I wish every single one of you a fine day with good things galore.

Donna Bear, Jewel and Cubs - UPDATE August 26, 2018
 Print  Email
A call came that Donna, Jewel, and her cubs were at a feeding station. We piled in the van and made haste. Donna by R.Vickers
Donna by R.Vickers
Randi Vickers snapped a picture of Donna looking well on her way to having another good litter. She had litters of 4 when she was 13 and 15 and a litter of 3 when she was 17. Is she fat enough to maintain a litter of 4 for this January when she turns 19. If she does, Donna will tie 31-year-old Shadow?s total of 26 cubs when Donna is only 19. These supplementally fed bears that tend to live longer than other bears just go on producing cubs at a time when Minnesota is trying to increase its bear population. Pregnant females are the first to den and can be protected to an extent by starting the bear hunting season at a later date. Pregnant females tend to den in September. The earliest date we?ve found is August 22 for pregnant Shadow in 2006. Jewel and cub

The season now starts on September 1. It would help the population increase and make it safer for tourists if the season opened at least after the Labor Day Weekend. Most people hiking in the woods on that busy holiday weekend have no idea that camouflaged hunters with high powered rifles are perched in trees ready to shoot bears. Leaves are still on the trees. People are not wearing blaze orange, and if they were they would not be visible through the leaves. Leaves will not stop bullets. There is no biological reason for the bear hunting season to start that early. Hunters are the DNR?s ?primary clients? according to an announcement by the DNR?s Wildlife Chief on April 23, 2012. Starting the season after the holiday weekend when kids are back in school makes it safer for tourists, relieves worry for tourists who want to hike in our forests in this beautiful time of year, and would help the bear population bounce back as the DNR is trying to do.Jewe'ls cub calling

Two of Jewel?s cubs were on the ground and her third was up a tree. I had brought the wrong camera?too long of a lens. I caught a picture wide enough to show her with one cub. Then she came closer and all I could get was part of her face in the picture. Jewel
Jewel
But that picture clearly shows the bump on her muzzle that readily identifies her. Jewel then was off into to the forest with two of the cubs. The cub in the tree hollered for her to wait up (mouth open wide) and quickly descended to follow. The cub headed for the last place she had seen her family and followed their scent trail from there.

On to the next adventure. A wonderful day.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- thanks jp for the morning teddies, ursula and that Smile it's Monday kitty- oh my- what a face!
cal- that pic of donna was something- she looks ready to den up- what a beauty she is and the pic of jewel-so pretty- hate hunting season, too.  Fall is about my favorite season but you really have to be careful when in the woods at that time.

johoward- ty for explaining Tribe- I grew up near Pittsburgh and had never heard that term to describe your Indians.Haven't followed baseball for many years.

rues- do you have mums in your gardens- they are pretty marginal here but I havea couple that come back every year- mostly I like them in containers near the porch. Moonflowers are annuals along with morning glories- right? I think we've had enough rain that we'll have to mow again this week.

cal- i suggest that you use ice packs on your knee- my hubby got me ice packs that look like a sheet of bubble wrap but the bubbles are bigger and are filled with water. They are flexible and you can wrap them around your knee. I've had them since 2012 when i had my knee replaced and i absolutely love them- have lent them to several people with the same surgery. He got them at Wal-Mart. i still keep them in the freezer just in case a joint starts to hurt for whatever reason.

Have a great day jewelies!

5:49 on the little Chickadee.  It reminded me of W. C. Fields who was famous for saying "Ah, yes, my little chickadee".

Lucky and Holly.

Today there is a googol of good thoughts so grab a few and enjoy.

I am glad to report that the Marlins did not lose. They are on their way to Boston and did not play.  A lot of teams did not play either.  There was only 7 games in the major leagues yesterday..

I got a clean bill from my Dermatologist yesterday.  I'll see him again in 6 months.  I have a follow-up with my Primary Cre doctor.  After the hospital visit.  I don't expect that to amount to much.

Sad, the passing of John McCain.  One of the officer's on the submarine I commanded was married to John's sister Sandy.  I got to know the family quite well as a result.  John's father, the Admiral was a Submariner.

Kimani, Cubs, Jack, Pontoon Ride - UPDATE August 27, 2018
 Print  Email
The hit of the day was a visit by non-clan mother Kimani and her 3 cubs. Kimani
Kimani
At first it was a scramble to identify her from the picture catalog that Lorie Kennedy and Mike Johnson have put together. All the Bear Course participants watched to identify the sexes of her cubs (2 males and a female). Kimani was wary, watching for other bears. The family seemed to appreciate the new elevated feeding platform.

Jack is walking better. Instead of carrying his left hind leg up under him, he is using it but walking stiffly on it as if he still has pain. He is well over 20 and is showing signs of old age. He is still the calm, very trustworthy bear we have known since 2003.

On the pontoon ride, we saw that mallards were still in their summer ?eclipse? plumage in which males and females look nearly alike except for the yellow bills of males and dark saddle on the bills of females (photo of each). They will soon molt into their breeding plumages?females with another coat of brown, males with their green heads, etc.

A common merganser, also in summer plumage, watched as we very slowly cruised by.

Another wonderful day.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- jp- ty for the teddy, lucky and holly and snoopy. how wonderful that you know the McCain family.
Kimani and cubs are just precious though they need a lesson on not standing on their plate while eating-lol So thankful for all the folks up north who watch out for and care for "our" bears. Just nothing cuter than a bear cub.

cal- so glad that jim was helping you - he is a gem! sweets showing off is funny- what a goat! my prescription for today is to sit with ice packs and watch tennis. I watched yesterday from 11 AM until 9 PM. Well- part of the time I watched on the computer and part of the time I watched the tv (when hubby was out) and followed live scores on the computer. 23 Americans played yesterday and 11 won. Most notable were Venus, Serena and Sloane. Serena looked really good and Venus had to work but looked good too. Just 15 Americans playing today plus Novak and Roger. I might get a break today when there are no matches I want to follow- didn't happen yesterday. Most notable loss was Simona Halep yesterday- she needs a rest I think- just not up to her usual game.

Well- we are in line for storms today too just like cal- it's already too warm and humid out- even duke doesn't want to stay out for very long. Tank has resumed his ornery behavior with duke- tank positions himself so that duke has to walk close to him to get to me or his treat! Duke is really hesitant- pretty  funny- don't think tank has hurt duke but his size is daunting for a short little dachshund.

Have a great day jewelies!
