The Five Bears Behind the Scenes and High Anxiety for Holly - UPDATE August 19, 2018
 Print  Email
(Update from Sharon Herrell) A few days ago during the 5:00 pm Behind the Scene tour a wild bear visited by the fence and became part of the education outreach at the bear center.Wild bear at NABC
Wild bear at NABC
Along with the introduction of our four ambassador bears, the two or three year old wild bear decided he wanted to be a part of the action. He was quickly shagged away from the fence by staff. There has been recent sightings of this bear in our parking lot and seems to be hanging around the nature trails. These bears move quickly away from people when they see them but it did lead to interesting questions for the interns to answer from the audience. These wild bear visits have been making Holly anxious.Holly on rock den
Holly on rock den

We are hoping for rain as the plants and berries begin to diminish around the northwoods. It?s hard to see fall coming so quickly but that is what is happening. Holly has put her bid in and seems to be guarding Tasha?s 2017 refurbished den. Where will Tasha den and is that Holly's final decision? We?ll have to wait and see.

The bears are currently maintaining their weights with the exception of Lucky; he gained eight pounds. That is acceptable. Ted gained three pounds and the females maintained their weight. All is good with their weights. Hyperphagia has taken over for three of our bears; they seem to have bottomless bellies (except Holly). When I look back on their weights from last year--all weights are relatively the same, except for Tasha who is gaining. The abundance of food that the bears have eaten in the enclosure and the amount we are feeding doesn't seem to have an impact but they still have over 6 weeks before hibernation.Lucky climbing Pat tree

Lucky and Holly both are enjoying climbing the Pat tree for treats. I have increased the food spreads, use of the trolley feeders for enrichment purposes, and are giving them more fruits than dry food to help them put on weight. I am not worried that they will all meet  Tasha

ideal weight for hibernation. Little Tasha is not so little anymore.

The smoky haze that has blown in is from the Canadian wildfires, it seems to have settled over Ely. I included a picture of the sun setting in its pink phase due to the smoke. The picture of Holly and Tasha both reflect the haze that is just hanging in the air. Our thoughts are as always with the fire fighters trying to control these fires.

This weekend we had some special visitors from the Kalahari Meerkat Research project. Professor Tim Clutton-Brock from Cambridge University and Professor Marta Manser of the University of Zurich stopped in for a visit with Dr. Rogers after they attended a conference in Minneapolis on Animal Behavior. They spent a few hours with Director of Education, Judy Thon and then went out and spent the day and evening with Dr. Rogers at the Wildlife Research Institute. Smoke in Ely

It was my complete honor to have them back on Saturday to introduce them to our four ambassador bears and talk about their different personalities, likes and dislikes. With the help of our Interns and Bear Educator Julie from the UK, we showed them dug dens, enrichment tools, and how our natural environment helps prevent boredom and pacing. Our habitat replicates (on a smaller level) how our bears have a similar life as a wild bear but remain captive their whole life.

Oh and by the way for all-- I am the Senior Bearkeeper not Beekeeper :)
Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- jp- ty for the sparkly teddy and I hope you feel better later
cal- 2:49 on the bear sea vitamin- pretty; yay-it is raining and a chance of rain all day; simona just didn't have enough gas in her tank yesterday to beat Bertens but it was a good match for 2 sets; and Novak was great- Roger was just outplayed. Novak has had a rough 2 years and now it looks like he has turned it around- good for him! Duke  went home late afternoon- had to laugh about your comment about rues pool party- water not too deep- well- it would be for duke-lol.  Tank is taller than duke.

nora- that pool party video was great fun and in New Jersey- who knew?

rues- one of the small town around here does that pool party for the dogs and is very popular; I had missed the first15 minutes of Dr. Jeff and couldn't figure out how that dog was shot; watched the first part yesterday on my Watch Tv everywhere- he got shot defended his owner- wow.The dog we had Waggles was absolutely scared of guns. Neighbor had to shoot a sick skunk one year and he immediately hid behind my legs when the gun came out.  Can't imagine how that dog chased after those guys with his injury. Found those responsible-good!

Took some photos yesterday- pumpkin on a stick- monarch caterpillars on my butterfly weed and the chrysalis is in those gaillardia somewhere- i didn't want to mess around in there too much in case another caterpillar was in the process pof getting into a chysallis. A mouse got under the patio somehow and was running sround under there. Tank and duke had a great time chasing it around. They couldn't get to it though.

Have a great day jewelies!

hi ev1,
With all the wonderful videos and photos posted the last few days I am actually  embarrassed to let JP know that Bill did not show up on my screen.  I delayed writing this in hopes someone else would tell him.
All is well here.  Joan shopped all day again yesterday.  She got a new Lazyboy gaming chair from Staples.  It is about the fifth computer chair in the last 3 years.  I hope it works for her.  This is a Cadillac of chairs.  If this is not good enough, I don't know what she will do.  I am keeping her old one, because it is her original chair from years ago.  It has been the one to take over each time one of her trial chairs failed her.  The important thing is she was able to shop all day, and enjoyed it.  YAY!
Cal I believe that by this time next month you will not have to sit down to do your chores.  We are praying for your relief.
May God bless all those suffering.

Nora  Are the tornadoes near you or the eagles?  The Weather Channel keeps saying NE Iowa.  If so, do your plan for safety.

Bear Action, Bear Talk - UPDATE August 20, 2018
 Print  Email
Bears in action. Bears discussed. A wonderful time. One-eyed Jack is walking better, putting some weight on his bad hind leg so he doesn?t have to hop. Crackle showed up. Shadow by Pam Gordon

A Black Bear Field Course participant here for her fifth course had never seen Shadow. She did this time. The photo is by Course Participant Pam Gordon. All the participants in this course have been here at least twice before. For them, talk about bears includes many memories.

In the prior week, bear talk included interviews for the documentary. Looking forward to seeing it. The canoeing photo is from 4K video taken by a drone.

More bear talk was part of the concert by Pat and Donna Surface Friday night. Host Donna Surface shared a story with the packed auditorium about how it is to come from New York to the bear woods of Ely. Lynn in canoe - drone photo by Jessie

She told how she and her husband came to the WRI, met bears, and now enjoy seeing bears, which this year was bears eating the abundant chokecherries on the trees outside their windows. They have written songs about the bears and the research. The North American Bear Center sells their music, and their music will likely be used in the documentary.

More good bear talk was with world renowned behaviorist Professor Tim Clutton-Brock and his colleague Dr. Marta Manser?the scientists studying the meerkats featured in the hit TV series Meerkat Manor on Animal Planet (2005-2008).

Much happening.

Thank you for all you do.

Good morning everyone- positive vibes going out on the air waves for jp- you are in the hospital and you still can make me smile- oldmonia lol- I doubted you the last time when you said it will be alright. This time i'm taking your word for it- be well!
cal- positive vibes coming your way also; did your doctor tell you to ice your foot after surgery or just to elevate it? make sure you listen to your post op instructions ---and then follow them.lol Yay for Jim- helping with the kids and thinking ahead to provide a meal.
We had 2 inches of rain through the day yesterday- haven't mowed for 2 weeks now- maybe by the weekend. Yesterday i met my "sisters" and a niece who lives here in town for breakfast at 2nd street sweets. my sisters are my sils but we call ourselves the outlaws. I'm the youngest of us- if you can imagine that and then our niece is still younger than me. This niece is a sister to the niece who lives in Denver that hubby and i visited on our way home from vacay. Is that clear? Anyway we had a great time- coffee and muffins- bluberry and chocolate chocalate chip and a sweet roll. We cut everything up and shared so we could taste all of it. To have a bakery in this small town is phenominal and she works magic in her kitchen.  The building the bakery is located in was originally many moons ago called The Tiny Diner- very small place- has been lots of things since then. We had a history lesson on it- originally built as a Sinclair Station.

Cool this morning- ac off and windows open at least for a little while. Really like the update from NABC-it's hard for me to think that they are getting ready to hibernate- i like winter too much to be a bear i guess.

Have a great day jewelies.
