Good morning everyone- 62-here- I ate breakfast on the back porch with the cats- no feline wizards here- 4:57. ty cal

jp- ty for the teddy, Big harry and snoopy Friday; also listened to the music from yesterday. Kenny Rogers- so great and John Denver was a huge favorite of mine. Sat in Annie's saloon in Aspen once waiting for him to show- no luck. Yesterday in class my instructor played a mix of music and I thought of rues when Almost Heaven by John Denver came on.

I think our rain is over- everything really green now- I managed to pull weeds yesterday- they came out really easy.
cal- got the second Potter book and one by Catherine Coulter- The Sixth Day. When I went to the library a new young guy helped me. He said he really liked the HP books- interesting young man. They were getting ready for the reading to kids time- fun to watch kids getting into reading- so important. Continuing to watch decorah- waiting and waiting for fledge but know it will be a bummer not to see them in the nest much-sigh!

Ted sleeping and I haven't seen any bears at Katmai yet though on the ranger live talk they saw some.

Have  a great day jewelies

Lily with Kim, Dave and Garber.

Saturday greetings.  Good wishes go out to each one of you that it will be a  good one.

I was up late watching the Marlins lose to the Rockies 11-3.  I should have gone to bed when it was 7-1.

The other day they reported that we had the longest day of the year.  Technically that is incorrect as all days are 24 hours long.

Excitement with Bears, Gulls, and Mergansers - UPDATE June 22, 2018
 Print  Email
About 9 PM a couple days ago, after sending off the update, there was excitement outside the window. Four-year-old Scott, son of Jewel, grandson of June, great grandson of Shadow, Scott and Lucy
Scott and Lucy
reaffirmed his commitment to sire Lucy?s cubs. Lucy is the 2-year-old daughter of Samantha, granddaughter of Braveheart, great granddaughter of Blackheart, and great great granddaughter of Shadow. They started outside the window and continued down on the dock. Scott and Lucy were also together after dark the evening of June 12. We don?t know what they did between the 12th and the 20th.

Yearlings are typically wary and skittish following family breakup. Related and unrelated yearlings often buddy up, probably for security. But they didn?t feel very secure when a fox came to a feeding site where 5 of them were grouped. They ran away. That story reminded another resident of a pair of mallard ducks confidently walking toward a yearling that then ran from them.

Excitement with herring gulls is daily, especially when the various catchers come. It is fun to throw bologna like a Frisbee to a catcher that is watching head-on with binocular vision as the bologna comes sailing for it to catch in mid-air.

About 8:45 this morning, Mike, Lorie, and I saw something we had never witnessed before. Mike heard peeping outside the window and then saw the first duckling drop out the side of the nest box about 20 feet to the ground. After a second did that, that mother emerged from the main entrance and also dropped to the ground. Duckling after duckling did the same as Mike came to get me to snap a picture. I saw two drop to the ground in rapid succession, but they were done by the time I got in position with the camera. We watched for them to leave but saw nothing. There was only one direction they could have gone without our seeing them?toward Eagles Nest Lake. About 9:45, we went down to that dock. There they were?the mother hooded merganser and her 9 ducklings about an hour out of the nest. With their fuzzy heads, they were the youngest ducklings I have ever seen. I had never before seen any hole-nesting ducklings make the leap out of their nest holes. A good day.

Good morning everyone- Duke and I slept in today- would have been longer but for a very noisy bird happy to see the day begin- jp- I told a bunch of people they were calling summer solstice the wrong thing- t also said aren't all days 24 hours. I'm prettysure some had no clue. Ty for the donut teddies, lily and kids and butterfly Saturday.
cal- I agree that Scott and Lucy need to get a room- hope he at least bought dinner and dandelions for her. Those little ducks were so cute. I remember geese jumping from the man made nest in Ca after the tree blew down with an eagles nest on it. I just happened to tune in just as the critters started jumping down- had to be 20 feet- but into tall grass. A little bit later they were all headed to the water with mom. Very cute- just imagine! and that herring gull- wow what a catch. I think my swallows from the front porch have fledged- need to clean up the bird poop- there's quite a pile  below the nest.

Windows open again last night but a little cloudy this morning. We had a new bakery open in our little town. They interviewed her in the local paper and she said she was jjust amazed at the response in her first week. She said she went through 100 pounds of flour in a week. She just loves to bake. Has sweet rolls that are really good and we've had pie too. Very good. She serves biscuits and gravy at breakfast and has one blue  plate special for lunch. Hubby said he heard biscuits and gravy are good. She doesn't have a fryer so I still need to go to Golden Delight for my cinnamon caramel donuts.

Watched some FIFA World cup soccer yesterday- Serbia lost to Switzerland-today at 9:45 Mexico plays South Korea. Watching guys in shorts and knee socks with such skills and endurance-wow.
We have been eating sweet cherries. One of our neighbors has an orchard- mostly apples but a few cherry, plum and peach trees. On Thursday he brought us a huge bowl that he just picked. Yummy!! We have great neighbors.

Have a great day jewelies!
