West Nile virus takes its toll on center's birds of prey (subscription required  >:( )

From the rehabber's FB page:

Indiana Raptor Center
July 5 at 1:14am ?

We are admitting patients at a record breaking pace as are several other rehab centers in the region- we are never able to explain these things unless it occurs during and because of West Nile Virus season- which does not hit until August.

Still receiving babies in early July! This screech owlet came in this morning from Terre Haute- via angel Karen who meets us in Spencer for the relay.

He is suffering from a nasty leg break at the lower end of his tibia. The fracture is nearly in the joint so it is not possible to use steel pins to surgically repair the break.

It is most frustrating to splint little feathery legs without making a big mess out of a little bird. His spirits are very high though as he downed a large chopped mouse as soon as the last piece of tape was place on his leg! He has been give meds for pain, sleep and swelling... To the vet in the morning- wish him well!

National Audubon Society: Watch this adorable Piping Plover video

Piping Plovers take refuge under a parent for warmth and security. But sometimes it can get crowded under there!

https://www.facebook.com/NationalAudubonSociety/videos/10153854601584007/

How many Piping Plover chicks can fit under a parent plover?

These adorable little families are a delight to watch sprinting across the sand, foraging for worms and chasing the waves. Tiny - and cute - as they are, Piping Plovers are vulnerable to the effects of their fellow beachcombers, humans.

So if you're heading to the beach, be sure to share the shore with plovers and other birds by:

1. Leaving no trace. Remove all trash and recycle whenever possible.
2. Disposing of fishing line properly.
3. Keeping dogs on leashes and obeying local laws regarding dogs.
4. Respecting protected areas and signs.
