Turning back the pages: Headlines from 25 and 50 years ago

https://www.dl-online.com/community/history/4542799-turning-back-pages-headlines-25-and-50-years-ago

"Editorial Short-Shorts: With man apparently determined to destroy nearly all forms of wildlife, an encouraging report came from the Interior Department the other day when it took the trumpeter swan off its list of rare and endangered species... An energetic effort is being made to build up the whooping crane population and we sincerely hope that the whooper doesn't meet the fate of the passenger pigeon, dodo bird, etc. In view of these events, it;s the opinion of this writer that state and national officials will soon be forced into closing seasons on ducks, pheasants, etc., or face the fact that future generations will never know the thrill of seeing these birds in their native habitat."

Look Back: On the hunt in Wood County
Historical newspaper excerpts from the Wood County Historical Society (a Harpy eagle in North America?!)

http://www.newsandsentinel.com/opinion/local-columns/2018/12/look-back-on-the-hunt-in-wood-county/

Excerpt: "An eagle captured -

Last Saturday morning while H.C. Roberts, of Newark, was out hunting, he saw a large bird flying toward him, and concealing himself behind a fence, the bird lit in a tree near him. He fired at the monster, breaking one of its wings. On examination it proved to be one of the finest specimens of the harpy eagle. Its measurements were as follows: Across the wings, 7 feet 6 inches, from top of head to tip of tail, 3 feet.

The Parkersburg Daily State Journal

Dec. 20, 1888"
