19 Dec 2016 "Euclid" bald eagle admit~ Lead poisoning is wasteful of our resources! ~
SOAR volunteer Deb had a busy day today, unfortunately. Deb transported to SOAR this bald eagle, a trumpeter swan, a great horned owl, and we think, a juvenile red-shouldered hawk. We are awaiting positive ID on the hawk.
This adult female bald eagle was rescued from the Des Moines River ice in Des Moines near Euclid Avenue today. When you watch the video, you can see the symptoms of lead poisoning. This eagle's blood lead level on our diagnostic equipment registered "HI." HI means her blood lead level is greater than 0.65 ppm. Read more about rehabilitating when lead is involved here: http://soarraptors.org/rehabilitating-birds-with-lead-exposure/
This eagle is thin at 8 pounds. Late this afternoon, Kay gave her some high calorie fluids as her system is not ready for solid food. She was given her first injection of chelation medication to address the lead in her body.
Thank you to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa for getting her off the ice and to an Iowa DNR law enforcement officer that took her to Deb!
I don't have many details on the swan, owl, or hawk... sorry.

This girl is still with us this morning. She has better balance and is able to hold her head up. Chelation continues. She had high-calorie fluids and a few bites of meat this morning. We are far from out of the woods.
On Euclid's original post and shares elsewhere, several had questions. Read this post on our website to learn about the impacts of lead. http://soarraptors.org/2016/12/impacts-of-lead/

On the afternoon of the 26th her blood lead level was checked again... and while still high is at least detectable by our diagnostic equipment. Her BLL is 0.496 ppm. We will continue with the chelation injections for another week. While the drop in her blood lead level is good, we are not out of the woods yet.
