Please view this video documentary concerning the massive deaths of vultures due to pharmaceuticals injected into livestock

http://youtu.be/5DO6kkOmZCQ

"The Indian sub-continent had the highest density of vultures in the world - 85 million in total. However, over the past few years 99% have disappeared - mostly due to the use of the veterinary drug Diclofenac.

The loss of such an important scavenger has had devastating effects - putrefying decomposing carcasses are thought to be the cause of anthrax and rabies outbreaks. The extinction of this species would have global health consequences.

The films were premiered at the British Council in 2006, and have since been broadcast in 15 different languages on the national network - along with special screenings for the Prime Minister and other key politicians.

There has been an immediate reaction from the public and national press. The films also appeal to farmers - many, previously unaware of the problem, have now switched to a safer alternative to the drug.

Manufacture and sale of the drug Diclofenac has been banned with immediate effect nationwide - to give the remaining 1% of vultures a fighting chance for survival."

I really want anyone interested to know about this...   :)

This might be too far for most of us, but it sure would be awesome to witness.

There are specific driving instructions to the release viewing spot in this article, for anyone near who wants to be there.

I'm sharing this from T40's post in the Forum's "Birds in the News" thread...  Thanks, T40 :)  Wish I lived within driving distance to be able to see this!

Annual release of California condors into the wild set for September 26, 2015 in Arizona. That would really be something to witness.

The thrill of a lifetime, baz.  Thanks for posting that.  To think that I once lived within easy driving distance of Big Sur and could also witness the Ventana releases if I still lived there gives me pause for thought.  The same is true for the San Diego condor reintroduction project. Too late now!

OEW, maybe you will get to see a condor release again sometime in the future.  That article said that this Arizona release also includes chicks chosen from the San Diego Zoo Safari Park program.  Interesting article chock full of great info.

Awww, that's wonderful!  Thanks, OEW!  I wonder where P5 hatched and was raised until release?  Maybe I will get the time to read the info at the links you posted and find out more.  Love the release/first flight in Arizona skies photo!   :) :) :-* :-*

The poisoning of the famous lion pride in Maasai Mara this week and the death of vultures that fed on their carcasses have awakened calls to ban the use of Furadan, a dangerous pesticide believed to have killed them.
