Copy of e-mail received today from VWS. Join me in this important effort.
Join Ventana Wildlife Society (VWS) in supporting the US Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), the National Park Service (NPS) and the Yurok tribe to reintroduce condors to the Pacific Northwest. To make this a reality the authors are drafting a plan to reintroduce the continent's largest land bird to the Redwood National Park and they would like to include your comments.
For the last decade the Yurok tribe has spearheaded efforts and Ventana Wildlife Society has supported the idea to reintroduce condors in the Pacific Northwest, a region that North America's largest bird has not occupied in more than a century. Reintroducing a new population of condors into the biologically diverse ecosystem in Redwood National Park and the surrounding area has a very real potential to aid in the species' long-term recovery.
VWS is participating in this effort as a project collaborator with USFWS, NPS, and the Yurok tribe. Given our 20 years of experience, VWS is working to consult with agency collaborators to help guide the development of this important project. Condors are now free-flying in California, Arizona, and Baja California, Mexico and this project would expand the range of the species into the Pacific Northwest, which is part of their historic range. The Pacific Northwest is in many ways an ideal location for a condor recovery effort because suitable habitat still exists where a flock of condors could still thrive in today?s world.
Please consider submitting a written comment in support of the proposed reintroduction program which includes establishing a release facility and monitoring program to reestablish a breeding population of California Condors within the Bald Hills region of Redwood National Park. Please join VWS in offering your support via the project website by February 28, 2017.
