I saw on the national news on TV this morning that the Mayor of Flint, Michigan, issued a State of Emergency because of high lead levels found in their tap/drinking water, after complaints from residents about finding elevated levels of lead in the water and the infants and children there. Apparently, in 2014, Flint switched from getting its water from the Detroit water system, to save money, and started taking it instead from the Flint River, temporarily. This news article says that they switched back to the Detroit water system in October, but it may be too late to reverse the damage already done, and they expect to incur higher costs in the coming years to deal with special education and mental health needs as a result.
