I saw on the national news on TV this morning that the Mayor of Flint, Michigan, issued a State of Emergency because of high lead levels found in their tap/drinking water, after complaints from residents about finding elevated levels of lead in the water and the infants and children there.  Apparently, in 2014, Flint switched from getting its water from the Detroit water system, to save money, and started taking it instead from the Flint River, temporarily.  This news article says that they switched back to the Detroit water system in October, but it may be too late to reverse the damage already done, and they expect to incur higher costs in the coming years to deal with special education and mental health needs as a result.

This is the NPR report on that news from today, with an audio file link on the page also:

baz - I posted the same story in the "Get the Lead Out" thread because I had an eagle-y comment of my own to make about it. However, the story rightfully belongs in this thread, so I'm glad you posted it here. The whole thing is so awful!

T40, I didn't read the posts in the Get the Lead Out thread until after I had read and posted in this thread.  I saw your post in that thread after I posted here.  I think it's good to have it in both threads for the many obvious reasons.  I just wrote and erased a huge diatribe about this horrendous situation.  I had to erase it.  I tried to re-write my response three times, but I still couldn't contain myself.  I am burning angry about this.
