The Four Faces of Bertha - UPDATE June 18, 2025

Upon her hungry arrival on April 21, three-year-old Bertha (Shadow, RC, Bow, Bertha) was missing some forehead hair like we saw last year. That’s the most common area where mange becomes active over winter. That area and her face are kept warm and moist throughout the winter as bears hibernate with the head tucked under the chest. There was more to lose, though. She looked about the same a week later (April 28) for her second picture. A couple weeks later on May 12, little hair was left on her face and forehead, but a month later on June 17, we had to look twice to see who she was. Her hair had grown back long enough to give her a black face like the others, although the hair still had some growing to do to be full length. It’s always nice to see Bertha.

Thank you for all you do,
Lynn Rogers, Biologist, Wildlife Research Institute and North American Bear Center

A lot of the bigger cities bowed to the developers, who did not want poles and lines at the street - bad curb look  :-X  So the city leaders made it mandatory that no above ground utilities at the front of homes.  Over the years it has been changed to buried in new developments.  City leaders and developers did not care about maintenance or cost, as long as they could not see the wires. ::)

In Hawaii, they have started to reconnect the Pohoiki Boat Ramp to the Ocean.  Everything that is being removed between the ramp and beach, was washed in by the tides over the past 7 years.

Yay LB!! You finally got back in! Oh my all your photos are awesome! Beautiful animals. Interesting that wolves are shy. Your photo with one is very cool.  Great idea for you to volunteer there. You would enjoy that! Keep us posted.

I like the 3 quotes/sayings. Very good choices.

I'm happy you're able to be here again!  :)

Good point, BL....I dunno. lived here forever and it's always been this way.

However, in newer suburbs they just bury the lines....the only way to go in a state like MN....my sis in Rogers has it like that.

These folks aren't using a bucket...they are climbing.

How else are they going to access and maintain their equipment but by foot ?

Nobody is going to let the 'lighter handed' better bucket trucks and modern pole equipment replacement into their back yard .. even if it could fit in even the nicest of days.

Private property access and dealing with all of the polite conversation that that entails for the hard working line folks and tree sawyers.

Chainsaw rips _ head phones on.

Their modern tree and pole replacement equipment _ not up in my nice green back yard there ?

Wait now. I'm in a blinding blizzard MN snow storm with feet already in the yards.

This is what is very perplexing to me, the lack of line and pole access.

You have a paved road that these Utility Company Trucks can drive up & down shining a dear lite on all of "their" equipment right there up on the pole from here from the road.  NO ?

We bow out , dogs best day ever, my Father taught me how to climb A telephone pole without getting my spikes to deep when I was 10.

It's a foot feel acquired sensation.

Well on a lighter note I found what I believe to be an Ollie Man driveway gnome sucking up the July heat of a 2017 MN summer like a turtle on a log.   8)    ;)    ;D

Very cool....however, I have a new roof over my steps now! and much nicer......Ollie man was laying out there just like that today while I kept him from the back yard. almost July, 2025

Great photos LB, what gorgeous coats they have!
And you look great next to the light coat one.
Reminds me of our first dog we rescued in 1973 Kansas.
Thank you for posting them.  ;D
