Shep, thanks for the link to the Spartan Stadium falcon cam. You are listed as the forum "starter" so could you correct the name to Michigan State Spartans?  We prefer not to be confused with the Univ. of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

Happy New Year to you and all the Spartans.  Go Green!

April 1, 2022 she had 2 eggs, so they should be appearing any day now.  KEEP WATCHING - I use DVR

Hey Shep, good to see peregrine(s) at the MSU nest box.  I'm not sure if it's one bird or two because they weren't together.  Also no sound at this location so we have to rely on "lip reading"  Ha, Ha.

I think the males return before the females. Might be info in the RRP blogs.

Shep, it might be just you and me posting about this nest box, so please help me out with the times we use.  I calculate the time from the rewind bar and use my local time for Decorah postings because we are in the same time zone.  But East Lansing, MI, is an hour later than where I live, and this scheme is the same when we go to Daylight Savings Time.

So which is preferred and most accurate?  Do the same as for Decorah?  Or add an hour to the calculated time so that this MSU nest box is on its own local time?

Also, if there are MSU peregrine watchers out there, come on, take some pics and post them!   :D

I use nest time
If cam is eastern I use eastern time
If cam is central or pacific time I *try* to use that time.
Is Michigan eastern or central time?
Some cams are on a line - hahahaha - I may just say dawn or noon or mid morning.  OK - cheating but I am doing lots of other things!

8 am  Falcon shows up.  I tried to get a band.  All I can see is it appears black over green or blue.  No way I can see numbers.  Falcons was on roof - all I could see was talons.  She / he flew up there from perch.

8.20 am Male - no bands

Shep, good to know this is an active peregrine nest box.  Today two visitors, neither banded.  Guessing that the earlier one (6:30 AM) was male because smaller than the later one (9:00 AM). Different enough in appearance to tell them apart -- rusty breast feathers on the larger one. And the larger bird did a bit of scraping gravel in the nest box.

Looks like a pair here at MSU's nest box atop the stadium.  They could be cheering on the Spartans in the NCAA.  Or getting ready to lay eggs and raise another family.

From earlier query about time zone in Lansing, MI, it is Eastern Daylight Time.  I can convert to that easily enough from my Central Daylight Time zone.

Awesome to see the first egg at the MSU nest box.  The eggshell is very dark red, wonder if that is a sign of what the parents are eating.

In the grand scheme of things, this addition to the peregrine population is probably way more important than the MSU basketball team's loss to KState in overtime yesterday . . .   ;)

Two eggs, with parent peregrine incubating and turning today.
In the pic, you can see what looks like small, black gravel on top of the box. It is flies!  Hundreds of them, all around the box.  Could be just a hatching and the insects will soon disperse.  What do others think?

Awesome, four eggs for MSU peregrines.

I can't tell which parent is which unless they are right together, then the male is the smaller bird.
Since last year's hatchlings were banded, we know that this year's parents are not any of them.
Most likely the same adult pair as last year.

Two feedings this morning, so the 3 that hatched made it through the night.  They can sit up to take food, but not moving around yet.  The 4th egg has not hatched; it could be the last one laid, on 3-30, so still might.

Eyase perching on the side edge of the box rail.  Might be the same on on each side about an hour apart, or two different ones.  Must check on how long until fledging expected here, normal fledging that is, not an accidental slip.  These eyases are just starting to wingersize and hop rapidly across the crowded box.

AllAboutBirds.com says the fledging is in 35 - 42 days from hatch.  So, hatching May 1 - 4 (ish), and fledge expected about June 6 - 15.  Or so.
Title: Re: 2023 Spartan Stadium, Michigan State U
Post by: STLbf on June 04, 2023, 01:07:08 PM
Was I ever wrong about fledging date!!!  Two were gone some time yesterday, and I totally missed it.  By the time I looked at the rewind today, only a few hours of dark were available and only two were left in the nest box.  They are Blue band S over Black band 65 and 66, on left legs.  From feathering, I'm guessing that #65 is the youngest because the most white baby feathers.

#66 made the jump at about 7:00 AM.  #65 isn't quite ready, and a parent dropped off lunch about 12:30.  I think it was the female (larger) and she didn't stay at the box.  A few minutes later, another parent stopped by and looked for all the world like "Where's everybirdie?"  I'd say this was the male.

Have not see the fledglings, and this camera does not move.  So good luck to all, fly high, and have great lives as soaring Spartans.    ;D

One still here as of 4:30 this afternoon.  On quick rewind scan, I did not see any feeding.  Could be the parents don't feed to encourage fledging.  Don't you wonder if the others are just off-camera?
Title: Re: 2023 Spartan Stadium, Michigan State U
Post by: STLbf on June 07, 2023, 12:22:47 PM
Today is final fledge day for the last of the four eyases at Spartan Stadium.  Early, about 6:00, here are a few pics.  The actual fledge was accidental, loss of balance and not able to recover.  It's a short drop to the roof, but camera doesn't move and there's no sound, so we can only guess that this one is OK.

The RRP banding group at Great Spirit Bluff places bands on its eyases, and also names them!  I believe that the property owner's children do the naming, but could be wrong about that.  Visit the GSB live site and RRP's forum for more information and to see the list of names and band numbers for 2023.

I will check in now and then to see if the camera stays on and if any peregrines visit the MSU nest box in the off-season.  If someone has info about the banding for these peregrines, please post it here.

Shep, thanks for the note about Spartan Stadium's camera going live.  No peregrines appeared in a quick review of the rewind so far today.

Peregrine visited the nest box at MSU stadium today at about noon [1:00 Michigan time].  Unbanded.  Chattering and marching around.  Good to see.

Shep, I have a quick look most days, too.  Guessing that it's a male peregrine checking out the box.  Seems smallish like the males are, but can't really tell without another bird to compare.  Chupping is exactly the main sounds it makes as it marches around inside.  In and out quiickly.

Beautiful male inside Sonday.

In Racine the male goes in and chups to call female inside.

About 3:00 this afternoon, the male came to the nest box, chupping to call a female, who followed him, perching , then going inside.  The male left and the female (bigger) made a couple of scraping areas in the gravel before she flew away.

Two different peregrines have been visiting the nest box today, but not at the same time that I saw on the rewind.

Is one a yearling?

GSB females fought for that nestbox.
I hope we dont have a fight here.

Shep, watching success at MSU!  The female came to the nest box before dawn and laid the egg shortly after.  Awesome!
Good to know that the male is around, too.

Thanks Shep!  MSU is my all-time favorite university even though I did not graduate from there.  Gotta find a Spartan emoji.

The male and female are taking turns sitting on the egg today. Very eggciting!   :D

Shep, cute Spartan emoji!  Also for second egg date.  See pic from this morning.  Female out and twittering off camera which might have been mating. The male came into the box shortly after.

And I found an "official" Spartan logo in downloadable clipart.

At about 4:15 this afternoon, the female peregrine left the nest box, and about 5 minutes later, the male returned to the eggs, still only 2.

Yes, three eggs now at the MSU nest box.  Awesome.  I post times that are as hour earlier where I live, so they are very approximate.  The new egg was visible on the rewind at about 2:00 this morning, and that's the female in the nest box.

Fourth egg laid this morning, between 9 and 10 (or so).  Cold and windy and the parents are changing places fairly often to keep the eggs and themselves warm.

Four eggs seems to be a full set for the peregrines.  We will see!  No pics from me today -- things look totally normal at the MSU nest box.

Good video of the male coming in to incubate the four eggs.  He is smaller than the female, and he has difficulty getting his body over all of the eggs.  Watch on the rewind about 9:00 AM to see how persistence pays off.

The school motto  "Spartans Will"  applies to its nesting population!

Everything looks OK at the Spartan Peregrine nest box. Eggs take 29 to 32 days until hatching.
First egg March 27, fourth egg April 3.  So maybe the first week of May.
