Title: Aryana Hummingbird, Laguna Niguel, California
Post by: Phyl on January 22, 2023, 05:17:57 PM

Welcome to Aryana Hummingbird’s habitat! This live cam features an Allen’s Hummingbird who lives in the coastal area of Laguna Niguel, California. She has plenty of nectar sources from which to choose, including this feeder and the trumpet-shaped Violet Churcu you see in the background. In addition to Aryana’s comings and goings, you’ll see lots of songbirds, bees, butterflies, and other hummingbirds flitting about!

During mating season, the live cam will be repositioned so viewers can watch the nesting process, from tiny eggs in a walnut-sized nest to the exciting day her nestlings take wing and become “jewels of the sky.”

The sound on this camera is a pre-recorded loop, in order to protect the privacy of the camera hosts.

MALE OR FEMALE: HOW CAN I TELL THE DIFFERENCE?

Male Allen’s Hummingbirds have deeper, richer coloring than their female counterparts. They have brilliant, bronze-green plumage along their backs, and coppery-orange eye patches, flanks and bellies. Most notable, they have wide, reddish-orange collars (gorgets) that flash scarlet in the sunlight. A female Allen’s Hummingbird has iridescent green feathers on her crown, shoulders, and back, and her flanks are covered with pale, metallic-orange plumage. Her breast and neck feathers are white, and her tail feathers have white tips. She has a sprinkling of freckles across her neck region, and a patch of reddish-orange feathers at her throat.

WHAT DO HUMMINGBIRDS EAT?
Hummingbirds have a very high metabolism. They eat all day long, and rely on nectar-rich flowers and plants for their survival. But they don’t just live on sugar—they also get their protein by foraging for soft-bodied insects (e.g., fruit flies, gnats, and tiny spiders). They rely first on natural food sources and treat backyard feeders as meal supplements, or a quick dessert.

HOW DO HUMMINGBIRDS EAT?

Their long, needle-like beaks are perfectly designed to draw nectar from trumpet-shaped flowers. Their tongues are shaped more like the letter W than a drinking straw, with tiny hairs at the tip. This unique design allows them to trap nectar and bugs in the folds of their tongue and lap them up at a rapid pace.

WHERE DID HUMMINGBIRDS GET THEIR NAME?

Hummingbirds got their name from the humming sound their wings make as they fly.

DO HUMMINGBIRDS MAKE OTHER NOISES?

Most hummingbirds make chirping, clicking, and chittering sounds. Listen close, and you’ll hear the different calls they use when they’re flitting from flower to flower, defending their territory, or calling out to mama when they’re hungry.

HOW DO HUMMINGBIRDS FLY?

Hummingbirds don’t flap their wings. Instead, they move their wings at lightning speed in a figure-eight pattern. This gives them the lift they need to fly forward, backward, and sideways, to dive and hover, and turn upside-down.

HOW DO HUMMINGBIRDS SLEEP?

At night (and during coldest days of winter), hummingbirds look for a sheltered spot where they can rest. They go into a state of torpor, which is like hibernation in that their metabolism, heartbeat, and respiration rate slows so they can conserve energy. They may even hang upside-down on the branch! The next morning, the tiny hummingbird awakens with enough energy reserves to find its first meal of the day. For these reasons, you’ll likely notice more activity at the feeder in the morning, and shortly after sundown.
WHEN IS NESTING SEASON?

In Orange County, California (where Aryana Hummingbird lives), nesting season begins in late November or early December and typically lasts until May or June. A male hummingbirds uses its flashy gorget to attract as many females as possible. It protects its territory from intruders, but takes no responsibility for nest-building—or raising babies for that matter!

HOW DOES A HUMMINGBIRD MAMA BUILD HER NEST?

Over the course of several days, Aryana gathers found objects—lichen, palm fronds, lawn clippings, paint chips, and cottony materials, for instance. She then weaves them together into a walnut-sized nest that’s lashed to a camouflaged branch with spider silk. It’s hard work, hauling construction materials to the nest area! She makes 30+ trips per hour, to and from the construction site, so she concentrates most of her efforts during the coolest part of the day.

HOW MANY EGGS DOES A HUMMMINGBIRD LAY?

Aryana lays two eggs per clutch. They are about the size of a Jelly Belly and take approximately two weeks to hatch.

HOW LONG DO HER HATCHLINGS STAY IN THE NEST?

When they first emerge from their shells, her hatchlings are no bigger than a raisin. They are featherless and weigh no more than a U.S. dime. But if all goes well, they’ll look more like hummingbirds every day, and will take to the skies about three weeks later.

DO HUMMINGBIRDS RE-USE THEIR NESTS?

It’s not uncommon for Aryana to refurbish her original nest. It might be a cushy home for several broods in a given season, or she might repurpose those nesting materials in future years.

HOW CAN I SET UP MY OWN BACKYARD FEEDER?

1. Choose a dripless hummingbird feeder with small drinking portals and an ant moat.

2. To make your own nectar: Dissolve simple granulated table sugar into warm water, at a ratio of 1 part sugar to 4 parts water.  Warm tap water is typically fine to use, but if your water source has lots of added minerals, you might want to boil it. Be sure it’s cooled completely before use! Extra nectar can be refrigerated for up to seven days.

3. Hang your feeder at least four feet off the ground, close to flowering vegetation where it can safely perch. Keep the feeder clear of landscape features that might give predators easy access to your hummingbirds.

4. Replace the nectar every three to five days -- sooner if it’s hot outside or the nectar gets a little cloudy. (Science-based Recommendations: At 70-84 °F, replace nectar every 3 days; at 85-87 °F, replace nectar every 2 days; at 88+ °F , replace nectar every day.)

5. Clean your feeder every time you replace the nectar, using a weak vinegar solution and a small brush to clear the portals and all the nooks and crannies. Rinse well before refilling!

6. Remember: NO alternative forms of sweetener, NO insect repellants, NO household cleaners or dish detergents, and NO red dye.

All of chat and myself are still reveling in a successful nest/fledge.
We're all very happy to have seen all three , Aryana,Samantha and Liam(youngest) of them  flittering in the fuchsia yesterday. Here's to another brood, maybe in this very nest!
Thoughts of this dear family flitting through the Fuschia ---so heartwarming.

an egg or two?  Just have to wait and watch.  ;)

Still no sign of Aryana's nest, but she was ferrying lots of cotton from the fluff cage yesterday. (Did you catch any of that in real time, or watch the videos before they vanished?) More signs of her return: Tiny remnants of fluff, scattered like bread crumbs on the lower branches of the fuchsia and littering the ground below.

I took a flashlight outside this morning, before the camera went live, to have myself a look-see. If she’s building a nest in the reachable branches, it’s well hidden. If she was perched nearby, she kept perfectly still so I wouldn’t find her. I’ll observe again during daylight hours, watching her flight patterns and behaviors for clues. I hope you'll do the same.

Sweet side note: This fuchsia is roomy enough to play host to hummingbirds and songbirds, simultaneously. Pretty sure you already noticed a couple of larger birds in the background! Turns out, it's a pair of house finches. They are currently nesting in this alcove-- above the roofline, where it's cloaked by a privacy curtain of flowering branches. [Click "See More," below, so you can visualize the area I'm talking about.] Perspectives, right? You wouldn't have seen this on camera, because it's a healthy distance from Aryana's previous nests AND the fluff cage, which they share.

Don't you worry: Aryana's built nests in this fuchsia many times before. She's also built nests in other areas of this habitat. She knows her friends, and she's wiser, now, about potential enemies. All signs point to the fact that she's building another nest, where instinct tells her they'll be sheltered from the elements and protected from the prying eyes of potential predators. It's up to her to show us where it is.

Yeah! Very great clip 👍💖 Thank you very much 🥰😊🙋‍♂️
Now we have to find a place where she can build her new nest, safe from intruders! And especially to move or install a camera to the new location of "our" dear little Aryana so that we can support her in her efforts and send her lots of encouragement for a new brood!
Hello to all and we must remain positive for the continuation of the events... 😍🤩😃🙋‍♂️

Easter Basket! Right before we went live yesterday, Aryana flushed from the Brazilian Skyflower tree. I immediately recognized what she was telling me: Approach quietly...my nest is nearby. I stood still, staring up into the dense foliage for a long while before I found the nest. Here it is, equal parts magic and cotton fluff. No eggs yet, but she's being fiercely protective, so I imagine she'll be incubating soon! Want to know more about her tiny, totally hidden Easter basket? I'll share photos in reply to this post...

The section of the Brazilian Skyflower in which she's hidden her nest. Just look at that beast of a tree! Her nest is in a thicket of tangled branches, and for that reason, Explore couldn't position a nest cam for livestream views. We'll post still shots, when possible and in a way that's not disruptive. NOTE: Tempting though it might be, never ever prune your shrubs and trees this time of year! During nesting season, countless hummingbird babies are brought to rehab for this very reason. 😢

Hi Zen! Aryana has a very distinctive gorget. It is larger and more heavily colored than most and appears to have a shape like a Christmas Tree. It is scalloped on the bottom edge with a notch in the center. With this up close and personal view and different times of day and light will show a change at times. She is here often because this is her feeder and territory. Most others you might see will have more of a spotted spaced gorget and not as dense. I hope I explained that right. It's sometimes difficult.

I've finally got the additional snapshots not originally  posted between March and April 9th,  posted chronologically .
The cam for Aryanna's nest is not operating mostly because she's had intruders and moved her nest.

I will be scouring the web for Aryana videos and news.
Whenever I do find these items, regardless of timeliness,  I'll post here.

Aryanna's back on live nest cam!

      aryanahummingbird Mod Birchwomanan hour ago
I first discovered her nest on Christmas Day, 2023. At that point, it was a tiny, cottony basement, snugged into the elbow of two adjoining branches. Team Aryana watched it develop for several day--together with the Explore team--because we wanted to be sure she was serious about nesting in that spot. They came out to reposition the feeder cam this past Wednesday. And late that afternoon (January 3rd), we launched Aryana's first nest cam of the 2023-2024 mating season.

Aryana Hummingbird Lays Her First Egg of the 2024 Nesting Season

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drCM_AlbdUg (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drCM_AlbdUg)

Aryana is an Allen's Hummingbird who lives year-'round in the coastal area of Laguna Niguel, California. She built this nest in a Gartenmeister Fuchsia.

WATCH THIS: After sitting low in the nest for several minutes (only some of which you see here), Aryana lifts herself onto the uppermost edge of the interior nest wall. She stabilizes herself by gripping the nest fluff with her tiny talons. When she starts "laboring," her back end is elevated. She flares, lifts, and wiggles her tail quite a bit while she's pushing it out, and then appears to "collapse" into the nest bowl when she's finished.

She spins the egg with her feet and beak. This helps keeps the egg membranes from sticking to the shell.

Even though Aryana stays on the nest for a while, she is not yet incubating this egg. It is not at risk, temperature wise,  as the regional weather is a balmy 60-some degrees Fahrenheit and she covers it with her "brood patch" while she sits on her nest.

Aryana will likely lay her second of two eggs within the next couple of days, and will then begin the incubation process. By delaying incubation, both chicks will hatch very close together, develop at the same rate, and fledge within a similar timeframe.

6:49 a.m. on Friday, January 12, 2024.

When she starts "laboring," her back end is elevated. She flares, lifts, and wiggles her tail quite a bit while she's pushing it out, and then appears to "collapse" into the nest bowl when she's finished. It's an effortful labor--she's wobbly and loses her grip a couple of times. Completely normal, given that she's pushing out an egg that's roughly 25% of her own body weight.

Hummingbirds begin the incubation process after laying the second egg.* She spins her eggs with her feet and beak to keep the egg membranes from sticking to the shell. She may leave the nest to forage for her own nourishment, collect additional nesting materials, and/or chase away curious onlookers and/or predators.  Our regional weather is a balmy 60-some degrees Fahrenheit, and she blankets her eggs with her "brood patch" while she sits on her nest.

*By delaying incubation, both chicks will hatch very close together, develop at the same rate, and fledge within a similar timeframe.

1st Egg was laid at 6:49 a.m. Pacific on Friday, January 12, 2024.
2nd Egg was laid at 6:58 a.m. Pacific on Sunday, January 14, 2024.

Aryana Hummingbird Lays Her First Egg of the 2024 Nesting Season

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drCM_AlbdUg

Jan 12, 2024  #Explore #NeverStopLearning #MoreToExplore

Aryana is an Allen's hummingbird who's built her nest in a Gartenmeister Fuchsia in the coastal area of Southern California. Explore.org is live-streaming this nest, which is home to her first clutch of 2024.

We caught our first glimpses of this second chick within a minute of Aryana's exit--first poking its head up, then maneuvering its egg shell remnants -- at 7:28 a.m.PST on January 30, 2024. Aryana returns after foraging and hatch was confirmed via an observed feeding at 7:50 a.m. (A video of this first feeding is available in Aryana Hummingbird's YouTube channel.)

We celebrated the first hatch at 6:37 a.m. PST on January 29, 2024. Its first observable feeding takes place at 6:45 a.m. PST. (A video of this first hatchling's feeding is also available in Aryana's YouTube channel.)

FUN FACT: The eggshell remnants are removed or crushed on the bottom of the nest after hatching. Unlike most other birds, hummingbirds almost always have clean nests.

Feb 4, 2024
Aryana is an Allen's hummingbird who's built her nest in a Gartenmeister Fuchsia in the coastal area of Southern California. Her hatchlings are aptly named: Faith and Eros (in mythology, the God of Love and Affection).*

Explore.org is live-streaming this nest, which is home to her first clutch of 2024. Video clips of their respective hatch days (and beyond) are available in Aryana Hummingbird's YouTube library.

Milestone moments in this clip:  Aryana's chicks are able to crane their necks above the nest rim when they feed. Their orange, candy corn-shaped beaks are elongating and turning darker at the tips. Notice, too, Aryana's ability to maneuver in small spaces--Instead of flying in from elsewhere to feed them, she spins off the nest & hops onto the rim. Voilà, food on the go!

*Moderator Carl Bailey suggested the just-right names for these perfect little beings.

Aryana Hummingbird: Snacking on Insects While Feeding Her Nestlings
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmOprAEb-PA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmOprAEb-PA)

Feb 7, 2024
Aryana Humminbird's nestlings are 9 & 10 days old now. Their eyes are opening and they are growing pinfeathers.  In this video, Aryana perches on the nest rim to feed Faith & Eros, and then snacks on insects she retrieves from a neighboring leaf. As they grow more pinfeathers, Aryana's hatchlings (aka nekkid raisins) will be increasingly able to thermoregulate. This will allow Aryana to spend more time off the nest between feedings.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9TfL8-xijY (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9TfL8-xijY)

Feb 8, 2024
Heavy winds rearranged the Gartenmeister Fuchsia overnight, criss-crossing the branches and draping them over the nest. So pretty--even if Aryana has to readjust her stance and nudge aside the leaves to feed her babies.

Eros & Faith are 10 & 11 days old, respectively. Their eye slits are popping open, more every day; their beaks are darker and more pointed; and they're sprouting lots of pinfeathers.  Aryana's nest bowl is an increasingly tight squeeze for these growing chicks, so among her other "nestorations," Aryana's stretching their cushiony home with her feet, beak and talons.

 Feb 10, 2024
In this video, Eros & Faith are 12 & 13 days old, respectively. My, haven't they grown! Big happenings here: Aryana feeds her babies while perched on the nest rim and shifts to a lower, off-camera branch. She also hovers--a flight maneuver that no other bird species can manage.  Notice also that her chick has a very full crop (i.e. the food pouch that looks like an inflated balloon on its neck). They're eating really well, obviously! One last thing, super cool: The chick on the left is wingersizing!

They're doing all the things you'd expect of a hummingbird baby at this point in their development:  eating, pooping, napping, peeping, and wingersizing, etc.  Oh, and did you notice? They've preened the sheaths from quite a few pinfeathers, revealing for us their characteristic green and orange coloring.

Eros behind leaf

Feb 20, 2024
At 22 and 23 days post-hatch, Eros and Faith are preparing for a life beyond the confines of the nest. Eros is the first to venture forth...at least a little bit. You can watch that earlier scene, in a shorter clip. Here, he takes his first, brave steps onto an adjacent branch; forages for insects among its leaves; cozies up to Aryana for nectar slurry; and engages Faith in a friendly jousting match afterward. Fun times!

But does this count as a fledge? Not quite. In a true fledge, our Fledge Watch Contest rules say, "a nestling uses both wings to achieve liftoff, and both feet leave the nest--no one-footed hops or touch-backs on any part of the nest rim or a nearby branch." So Fledge Watch continues!

For newcomers to this nest, and those who want a quick refresher course:

Q: Who is Aryana Hummingbird?
A: Aryana Hummingbird is an Allen's hummingbird who's raising her first clutch of the 2024 nesting season in a Gartenmeister Fuchsia. Her babies, Eros and Faith, are 21 & 22 days old. Thanks to Explore.org, we're able to watch the entire nesting process, from egg to fledge.

Q: How much do these nestlings weigh right now?
A: It's hard to give an exact answer, but a mature adult Allen's hummingbird weighs between 2 - 4 grams (the average being about 3 grams). Since they're not yet fledglings, it's fair to guess that they'd come in at
the lighter end of that range. So...2 grams, then, if not slightly less. How does that compare to the weight of everyday objects? Well, these items weigh approximately 1 gram apiece, so pick any two: a paper clip, a raisin, a U.S. dollar bill, the cap of a disposable Bic pen, and 1/4 teaspoon sugar.
Short answer: They're feather-light!

Eros continues the trend he started yesterday by breaking free of the confines of the nest. But he's still getting his proverbial feet under him, as you'll see in this clip. While maneuvering himself from the nest rim onto an adjacent branch, Eros loses his balance but uses his wings (assisted by Faith's beak) to regain solid footing.  Whew, and yay!

Enquiring minds want to know: Does this count as a fledge? Not quite. Wings Up for Aryana Hummingbird and a Successful First Clutch of 2024!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79oQDv-ZugE
Feb 21, 2024

Faith and Eros took to the skies at 1:54 p.m. PST this afternoon. They fledged as one, in a rare, simultaneous take-off and landed somewhere between a camellia bush and a patch of honeysuckle.

It seemed today like Aryana was in a huge hurry to build a new nest, while also "encouraging" her babies to take wing.  She cannibalized cotton from the existing nest, tugged bits of fluff from under her babies. Little bits, and then big wads...she ferried these construction supplies in her beak to parts unknown. And when they didn't seem inclined to fledge anytime soon,  she pirouetted around her nestlings like a whirling dervish, flew down and around them while flapping her wings. It's entirely possible that she startled them into fledging, but we can't rule out the fact that, at 23 and 24 days post-hatch, they decided on their own that it was time they experienced the wider world. Together, like the tight-knit family they'd become.

Aryana's visited this nest several times since they took to the skies. You'll see at least two visits in this video. Notice the stringy plant matter on the nest bowl? It was coiled in her belly feathers earlier this morning--more nesting materials, probably, dragged to and fro in her haste. It shook loose somehow, and her babies toyed with it 'til they fledged.. Fast forward several minutes after her babies fledge, and you'll see Aryana poke her beak into the nest interior and drape it like a ribbon across the nest. Who knows, maybe she'll decide to refurbish this nest for her nest brood!

The fate of each hummingbird nest varies, of course, depending on the circumstances in which the mama hummingbird and her babies find themselves. For example, they might be abandoned, repurposed by other females, be left to deteriorate over time, or get reused by Aryana in this or a future breeding season.

Feb 29, 2024
Aryana is a non-migrating Allen's hummingbird who lives in the coastal area of Southern California.  This is her second nest of the 2024 mating season. Aryana started pulling cotton fluff for a new nest on February 21st, the same day that her first brood (Faith and Eros) fledged.  We discovered this nest on February 24th, 2024. It's tucked into the sheltered branches of a tree-sized Banana Shrub.

Banana Shrubs are members of the Magnolia tree family. They do not yield fruit. The name is inspired by their creamy-white, burgundy-tipped blossoms, which fill the air with a sweet, unmistakable fragrance--like bananas, some say, or maybe Juicy Fruit.

Thanks to our Partnership with Explore.org, we're able to livestream the entire nesting process, from egg to fledge.

NEST DATA:

Nest-in-progress first spotted on February 24, 2024.
Egg laying:
Incubation period started on
Faith's hatch occurred on January 29th--Day 16 of the incubation period. Eros hatched the next day (January 30th).
*Fledge watch: 20-28 days is the estimated timeframe from hatch to fledge.
Fledge Date: Simultaneous fledge on February 21, 2024

Aryana will likely have at least 2-3 clutches this season.

Aryana Hummingbird lays the 1st egg in her 2nd nest of 2024 (Extended Version)  Mar 3, 2024

After sitting low in the nest for several minutes (only some of which you see here), Aryana lifts herself onto the uppermost edge of the interior nest wall. She stabilizes herself by gripping the nest fluff with her tiny talons and exhibits some of the signs that suggest a hummingbird is “laboring”: her back end is elevated. She flares, lifts, and wiggles her tail. She then appears to "collapse" into the nest bowl, which indicates that labor is over and there’s an egg in the nest. Official time of egg-laying: Sunday, March 3, 2024 at 7:01 a.m. Pacific.

Aryana inspects her egg several times in this clip, poking it with her beak and spinning it with her feet. This keeps the egg membranes from sticking to the shell. Even though she rests on the nest for a while, she is not yet incubating this egg. It is not at risk, temperature wise, as the regional weather is a balmy 60-some degrees Fahrenheit. Plus, she blankets it with her "brood patch" while she sits on her nest. Aryana will likely lay her second of two eggs within the next couple of days, and will then begin the incubation process. By delaying incubation, both chicks will hatch very close together, develop at the same rate, and fledge within a similar timeframe.

Aryana Hummingbird Snoozes on Her Nest in a Rainstorm

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Abl1l2kr8p4

 Mar 6, 2024
Aryana's nest swayed in the wind, so she tucked herself into the cotton and dozed. First, though, she blanketed her eggs with her brood patch to keep them warm.

Rainwater shimmered on her feathers, beading up and rolling off her back while she napped. I don't know about you, but I was reminded of those Calm app commercials.

Rest assured: Hummingbirds are well-equipped to handle even heavier winds and rain!  And besides, Aryana's nest is sheltered by a roof overhang and dense vegetation, so she doesn't feel the full impact of rain- and wind-storms.
