It's fun having the TV's back. I love the grunting and other sounds they make.

They were poking around in the straw and once in a while looking like they might have found little tidbits to eat.

One settled into the nest bowl for a little bit, but then left.

Between 1 and 2 o'clock this afternoon, there was extensive interaction and vocalizations of 2 Turkey Vultures. Most activity occurred in the nest area and was out of sight.

A turkey vulture pair was in the loft for approximately an hour, last one left 5:09pm. It was a gentle rainy period. Again vocalizing in corner nest for most of the time, out of sight. The nest bowl is shaping up and both TVs are fluffing up the straw.

Clarinda & others, what fun to have an RRP cam site in Missouri! Lots to learn about MO TVs.
Couple pics of shift change about 1:00 PM today. They didn't leave the eggs alone for more than a minute, and it's warm there now. The parent birds have a gravely grunt sound, and are easy to hear walking on those bare boards.

Here's two more pics of the new vulture baby. The parents were hissing and growling about it. Wonder if they might be first-time parents?? Anyhow, I think we should name it Luna, or Eclipse, in honor of the Moon feature when it hatched. Or not, if it is bad luck to name a chick!

STL, I saw shift change, and the odd behavior by the parent in the bottom pic. I thought maybe that was Dad TV, seeing it for the first time.

Lisa, I thought the same, Dad TV. It looked like a bigger bird than the other one, but is the male TV larger than the female? Cornell's All About Birds doesn't mention size difference. Perhaps just puffed up at the sudden movement of what was an egg just a short time ago.

I noticed about 4 hours ago or so on rewind, that there was a pip in the 2nd egg, and just a few minutes ago when the parent got up I saw the 2nd chick come out of the egg. Its in front of the older chick.

Ya gotta be quick to catch these chicks in view! It's extra tricky because the cam is in B&W most of the time. Great to watch Turkey Vultures raising young in Missouri. Love hearing the parents tromp across the wood plank hay loft floor.

STL - RRP posted a video and small post about the TV's last night on their Facebook page. Here is what they said about feeding the chicks.
Eagles and falcons feed their young chunks of meat, but turkey vultures feed by regurgitation (aka vomiting)! A chick slips or thrusts its beak inside its parent's beak, which stimulates regurgitation. When chicks are young, parents regurgitate small amounts of well-digested food - much like the tiny bits of pure meat that eagles feed to their hatchlings. As the young vultures grow, parents often switch to regurgitating large, poorly digested chunks on the floor - much like eagle parents who feed older nestlings large pieces of bone and meat with fur, scales, and feathers.

Lisa, thanks for the information from RRP about feeding. Seems very vulture-ish, in other words, gross, disgusting, smelly, generally awful. But we humans are fortunate to have birds and other creatures that clean up the multitudes of carrion and other dead stuff.

After this intensive brooding stage, the time parents spent in the nest decrease rapidly until, about fourteen days after hatching, adults made only brief, infrequent visits to the nest."

The live stream is off at the turkey vulture nest. Anybody know the reason? It's about quarter to three in the afternoon.

This is the worst time for cam to go out. Maybe a storm hit it. Hope the babies are ok. Are they? I miss them a lot, and worry I will miss them fledging. I remember seeing the parents go in and out the higher window in the right end wall. I am not sure I ever saw a baby launch up and out that window, but I would like to. LOL.
Nora, did you move closer or further from the Decorah nests? If I may ask?
I am going to Ely on the 16th of August and back on the 19th. I am driving there by way of Wisconsin to see some Amish friends who moved from Ohio.
I am free to change my route on the way back. Would you say Decorah is on the way from Ely to Cleveland Or no? Seems a little too westerly to be on the way.

I have in my old files that Big Bit fledged at 68 days old and Little Bit fledged at 74 days old in 2012. This pair is now 65 and 64 days old.

Just saw one fly down from the window to the right at 8:45 am Sat. 7/31. That is very close to fledging I think.
Hope they come back a few times after they fly the coop. These are the last babies of summer 2021, and most of us are another year older today. I am sad. LOL

joho i been reading on tvs i knew they mate for life not many predators but great horn owl eagles red tail hawk but mostly threat to new babies and tvs parents protect them well. even though these babies fledge they are still dependent on parents for food for 8 months more. great parents. it takes some work to get airborne they as you know hop. protected you so much take a feather from them 100,000.00 to 200,000.00 fine year in jail :) :) scout and his family been coming back here to schoolhouse for over 15 years every year i hope these tvs come back to this marshall barn next spring scout comes in march around the 17th leaves oct 19th he sees me out mowing or out he flies really low i can see his face his eyes he is seeing what i am doing freaked out jim first time he saw scout so close to me :) i yell hi ya scout you are one pretty bird! i tell them goodbye too when they head out tell him be safe come back.

At about noon today, there were 2 vultures in the nest area. Guessing that it is one chick and one adult. The same two appear to be there from 11 hours ago, when the rewind ends. Right after the pic, the camera "blinks" and it's a bare nest from then to posting time.
No message saying "Highlights" but I do not follow this camera regularly.
Good to read that one chick has fledged. Hope that both are safe and have long lives! And that the parents come back next year.

Clarinda I have been having trouble getting any visual on the TV cam.
In your post pic this morning I see two tv. Did the fledgling return to the loft then? I can only see the head of the second TV. Is this the other baby then? Does the remaining baby still get fed? If you know.

I just want to thank everyone involved in bringing us this cam. It has been a real pleasure to be able to watch these baby vultures all summer. The thing that struck me the most was the very gentle and almost loving way in which the babies interacted. This morning's pic shows, in human terms, a loving embrace.

I just want to thank everyone involved in bringing us this cam. It has been a real pleasure to be able to watch these baby vultures all summer. The thing that struck me the most was the very gentle and almost loving way in which the babies interacted. This morning's pic shows, in human terms, a loving embrace.

John I also had trouble viewing the feed his mornng. Keep getting the circle rotating?? However when I slid the cursor to look at earlier morning posts, I could view the history. That was when I took the snip of the two TVs, who I assume are the fledged and unfledged chicks?
I was gone for most of July visiting family in CA, so I missed lots of growing up time. Checked in and found one fleged. Have not seen an adult feeding in the loft since my return, assume they probably are. They are such a peaceful loving breed.

Great to know the turkey vultures are back in the barn loft at Marshall, MO. See two pics from yesterday captured from YouTube video, but don't know the time.
Three, maybe four visited briefly about 10:00 this morning. They don't make many calling sounds, but they stomp around on the loft floor like clog dancers.

hi stlbf call me cal i just saw a tv looking out the barn door then he or she came straight back out of view but i think to that corner where some bales of hay are. i saw yesterday cam moving all over so got to see the barn so happy they came back love the stomping sound we have an old one room school house on our property well two rooms up front my tvs come back to it every year i love tvs call one of them scout they watch me mow love your pics! god bless ukraine

Yes! Two eggs for the turkey vultures now. Rewind to about 10:00 this morning for a changeover that reveals both eggs for just a second. One bird nearly climbed under the sitting one to make the change.

hi clar i think first poc has like a dark brow across forehead second one does not. i sometimes see them both switching but im usually on my ipad here cant take pics on it i come and go barn mowing store basement etc lots of animals so i have my ipad in the kitchen. thank you for your pics! now i just see two eggs no parent wait will check again nope just two eggs its 5:11 pm here central time same as tv cam. i love me some tvs too! :)

Vultures are not sexually dimorphic, which means males and females do not show any visible differences, despite their sexual organs not being the same. A DNA test is required to be tell the difference, which involves plucking one of their feathers or taking a blood sample. so we aint going to be finding out! i did see that feather laying over there. too bad someone cant just ask them.

calhound, yes, the second chick hatched right about 6:00 this morning! Interesting to watch on the rewind. The female (I'm guessing) made sounds and rolled the hatching egg off and on all night. Also fed the first chick whatever they regurgitate. Very caring and protective, these parents.

Two Turkey Vultures came to Loft Door while Parent was on Nest. Both have now exited through the loft door. Nest Parent left nest to quicken there departure and has now returned.

Clarinda, you got the same pics that I did! The vultures are very quick about changeovers. I thought maybe there was a changeover, but no way to really tell. As you say, can't tell one parent from the other. Love the sounds of them "clog dancing" on the wooden floor.

Well, ya, they are the cleaner-uppers of the bird world, so lots of nutritious stuff.
Big bird feathers are emerging along wing edges, seen in the stretched out wing of one of the chicks. Not only do they stand up straight, they can run a few steps.
Do vulture chicks have a special name, like "eyas" for peregrine falcons?

Rewind sounds like it was raining at the barn. About 3:00, a parent brought food. Chicks really growing big. Seems like they are not self-feeding yet. Parent left quickly.

One of the babies is sick. Coughing, sneezing and trying to spit something out. Can we do anything? Do they get bird flue, or could there be something stuck in the throat? Like chickens, and I guess wild birds.

Don't know if turkey vultures get avian flu, but some other wild birds certainly do. Crows, bluejays, etc.
One of the vulture chicks was visible this afternoon, hopping on and off the bale of straw. It also could have been two chicks at different times.
Hope for the best.

How long do vultures stay with their parents?
Juvenile Black Vultures fledge at 10 to 14 weeks of age, but remain dependent on their parents much longer. Adults sometimes provide food for their young as long as eight months after fledging. Even once they have become independent, juveniles may continue to forage in social groups with their parents.

The vulture youngsters seem to be doing well. The older one has lost most of the downy ruff around its head and neck -- otherwise it's impossible to tell them apart! Don't know if Marshall, MO, got the heavy rain storms Monday night into Tuesday.

The true 'bone eaters' though are the lammergeiers (also known as bearded vultures). These vultures have behavioural and anatomical adaptations that allow a diet of up to 90 per cent bone.

Both vultures have fledged, I think, this morning. Both there at 7:00 [pic]. One seemed to go out the back window about 8:00 [pic] and the other out the door about 9:15 [pic] after lingering on the window ledge [pic]. I could be wrong about both being gone; the early one I didn't see actually leave, but the second clearly flew away at the door.
It's VERY quiet in the loft now at 3:30PM and there's nothing on the rewind.
Fly strong and eat lots of carrion, you vultures! ;D

Looks like vulture fledglings go away and return to their "nest." This evening, one of them was picking around the loft, then flew away from the door. Possible that it was the first time to fly away, but I'd put my money on return and leave again. Anybody have better info?

i just checked on the kids dont see anyone from the cam view showing the front door stlbf looks like they left and came back. i hope so cause barn is safe good safe place and yet get so hot they can leave if they want too. Found this i have tvs come back every year stay in our old one room school house i do not go in there i see them on the roof and hanging around there but it is on the corner of our property can only see if in the car driving down pass there. once i went in and a mom was with her kid and she chased me hissing and spitting stuff out of me i made it to my 4 wheeler told her i was so sorry and not gone in there again that place belongs to them.
Turkey Vultures occur in a variety of open and forested habitats. Unlike Black Vultures, Turkey Vultures typically avoid urban and suburban areas. In North America, the species breeds in farmlands, rangelands, forests, and low-elevation mountains. Turkey Vultures do not build nests, but rather lay their eggs in dark recesses in ledges, caves, crevices, and hollow logs, as well as on the ground. I did see Tammy, and told her how her mother was my childhood hero. Her mother was my mother's youngest sister. She came to Avon Lake to visit us now and then. I was probably 7 or 8 years old. One day she and I were at the shore of Lake Erie. I was climbing a tree when a limb broke and dropped me onto a concrete step. It broke my arm and Aunt Florence, who we called "Bubbles" for personality, got me to a hospital in Lorain for treatment and a cast.
We had a very nice visit with a few peaches and melon but no work. I left when her laborer showed up to start working around the place which was Tammy's goal.
I see a few drops of rain on my window just now so I will be staying in a while.
I believe the cam is off for the season.

Good to see two eggs for the TVs. My Birds of Missouri book says that 2 eggs is normal. And that both parents help incubate, but since they look identical, we won't know when there's a changeover unless both are on camera. Hatch in 38 to 41 days.

Looking in at 2:30 this afternoon, the sitting parent was clicking its beak. I wonder if that's a way to summon the other parent. TVs don't call like eagles or falcons.

Nothing much has changed for the Turkey Vultures since my post on May 17. Two eggs still intact, but it must be close to hatching time. About 9 AM, the adults switched places (sorry lost it on the rewind; they are pretty fast), so both parents are attending to the eggs.

One of the turkey vulture chicks has hatched! Both parents are attending, and the chick is eating whatever it is that parents feed them when first hatched.

There's a pip in the second egg, about noon today.

No second hatch yet, but the pip is larger today that yesterday. Hatchling #1 seems OK.

Second chick has hatched, and everybirdie seems to be OK.

Both chicks seem OK, moving around a little, parents attentive.

Parent TVs talk to their chicks with low-pitched grunts. On rewind, listen while parent grooms one of the chicks. It's all good.

TV chicks are 19 and 18 days old today, I believe. Looking OK.
They fledge in 60 to 84 days according to AllAboutBirds.com. That's a 2-week range!

Clarinda, far as I can tell, the Forum is working just fine.
FYI, the GSB camera is back live this afternoon. I just posted some pics from about 3:00. It's really hazy there; probably wildfire smoke coming from Canada. Smoke supposed to be heavy in Missouri too this weekend, according to TV weather report.

Waiting for Fledge Time

Great pics, Clarinda. Those juvie vultures better not fly the coop just yet! But it's getting close.
Last year, August 8 was fledge day for at least one of them. Almost all dark feathers by then.

This afternoon, both TV youngsters fledged! Woo Hoo ;D
Or maybe their version of branching, because both returned to the loft fairly soon. And left again, and returned. This is the place where they get fed, so makes sense. They are using the main opening and I think also the window to the rear of the loft space as the camera pans around.
Need to check hatching dates with 2022 to see if this year's juveniles are early or the same age for fledging. Stay tuned.

Both TVs returned via the main doorway about 7:30 PM, and they are settled in a corner near the window for the night.

Monday about 11:00 AM, looks like both juvenile turkey vultures resting on a hay bale in the loft. Have not seen evidence of parents feeding recently, and they may stop to encourage the young ones to get out on their own.
Comparing ages at fledging for this year and last, they went a couple of days sooner this year.
2022: Eggs hatched May 31; fledged Aug 8; age 69-70 days
2023: Eggs hatched May 30 & 31; fledged Aug 5; age 67 days

Thanks to the camera operators who work this site. It's not nearly as scenic as the eagle and peregrine locations, but equally important, and you help us watchers learn about the turkey vultures in Marshall, MO.
Many thanks to the property owners who allow cameras in their barn loft, and to RRP for this addition to the long roster of live streams that add to our knowledge of raptors.
Check back now and then, but most likely the camera will go live next March when the pair returns from migration.

Camera is back on at the Turkey Vulture barn loft. Two TVs have been in and out several times today.

Camera off for a couple more days, back on today. And the TV mom has laid an egg! Last year, there were 2 eggs, so we'll see what ensues. Incubation is 28 - 40 days. I believe that both female and male incubate the eggs and feed the young -- but my books don't say!

Another turkey vulture egg has been laid! Probably the mom TV is sitting on the eggs, but since the male and female look the same, just guessing.
