The U.S. Forest Service made an announcement Friday, 02/21/2020, regarding Jackie and Shadow's eggs...here's what they said:
"It?s hard to say this, but the odds of our Big Bear bald eagle nest?s eggs will hatch this year are diminishing each day. We?re on day 44 and day 41 since the eggs were laid. They typically hatch between 35-38 days; even giving them a day or two extra for slow development due to cold temperatures, the window of successful hatching is closing. We haven?t seen a definite pip (crack in the egg from the chick poking a hole in the shell) in either egg. At this point, we'll be very (pleasantly) surprised if either egg hatches.
There are several factors that could result in a nest failure. The eggs may have been infertile from the start (incomplete fertilization during mating, etc.) or the embryos could have died during incubation (from congenital defects, weather, or environmental factors) or the chicks may not have been able to successfully break out of their shells. Chances are that Jackie and Shadow (as they pair of eagles are known) will continue incubation for another 10 days or so, but they?ll start leaving the eggs unattended for periods of time that will lengthen each day. "
We know all of this is hard to hear and see, it is part of watching nature. We will continue watching the nest and posting about Jackie and Shadow and their actions. Thank you for caring about the eagles and their lives.

Prayers for Big Bear Shadow & Jackie... been almost 60 days and eggs haven't hatched. They have been defending their nest the past 2 days... Shadow has blood on his head and it appears to be an eye injury. He has been closing it like Mom did. He'll be OK. Kinda reminds me of what R & J went through... so maybe the lil ones not hatching is for the best. There are video's but not going to post them. I keep them in my thoughts & prayers... one of my favorite nests. :-*

What happened to the eggs, where are Jackie and Shadow?
A-Jackie and Shadow had begun to leave the eggs unattended more often and overnight the last few days. On 3/15/2020, ravens came to the nest, they cracked the eggs open and ate the contents. From what we could see, the eggs were undeveloped and may not have been fertilized or something stopped any development early on.
Jackie and Shadow have visited the nest a few times, but will be spending more of their time in other areas of the territory. We are still in the breeding season for this region and it is possible they could mate again; however that would be very rare considering how long they incubated the failed eggs. We do expect them to continue using the same nest next season but this is nature and anything can happen. We will continue to observe Jackie and Shadow to see what they have planned for the future.

A little info on nest if you are new to watching...
About the nest: The nest is located at Big Bear Lake, California. It is about 145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine tree. The nest is the current home for Jackie and Shadow, a local bald eagle pair.
Q-How do you tell Jackie and Shadow apart?
A-Jackie is larger than Shadow. Jackie?s beak is both longer and thicker from top to bottom than Shadow?s.
Q-Where is Simba?
A-Simba left the Big Bear area in August 2019. There have been no reported sightings of him. He is out there exploring his big new world and fine tuning his young eagle skills.
Grab a tissue... This video starts at Shadow's beginning in 2018, you can see how young he is... then details on past 2 years... I cried. Lady Hawk played The Dance - Garth Brooks during the snowstorm that hit in May 2019 and we lost ((Cookie)) :'( Tearjerker... Jackie is lying in the nest testing it out when Shadow flies in with prey (some type of rodent looks like a rat). She goes to claim it but Shadow does not want to share and they have a tug-o-prey with it while she screams. Big Bear food fight! lol Shadow keeps and eats it while Jackie watches him - she then reaches underneath him to look for some scraps. Shadow better bring her back a nice fish after this! He hops to the front limb, feaks his beak and flies off. Thank you for watching!

Congratulations Jackie and Shadow, on the second egg laid of the 2021 season! Shadow comes in soon after Jackie lays the egg and after a while gets to see it. It doesn't seem like Jackie wants to get up and Shadow leaves the nest pretty quickly. At least this time he saw the egg. The first egg got eaten by ravens. Hopefully they'll have better luck with this one.

About the nest: The nest is located at Big Bear Lake, California. It is about 145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine tree. The nest is the current home for Jackie and Shadow, a local bald eagle pair.
What is happening at the nest? Jackie laid her 1st egg on January 6th. Shadow was unaware an egg had been laid and did not visit the nest the following day as he does often. Jackie left the egg unattended and ravens came in and preyed on the egg. There is a good possibility Jackie will lay a 2nd egg on or around January 9th so stay tuned!
Q-How do you tell Jackie and Shadow apart?
A-Jackie is larger than Shadow. Jackie?s beak is both longer and thicker from top to bottom than Shadow?s.

In a very sad turn of events, Jackie's joy of laying a third egg has turned into heartbreak. After a long and very hard labor lasting 10 minutes in which Jackie was screaming in pain and had her wings outstretched, she delivered her egg and it broke immediately. Or it was broken inside of her causing intense pain. The eggshell was empty no liquid at all which tells me it probably broke inside of her. When she turned around she had difficulty using her left leg. What a brave warrior Momma our Jackie is!! She is incubating her other egg right now. Say a prayer for our sweet Momma tonight and I hope she is okay!

Jackie & Shadow, hatch in progress "chirps were heard also" yesterday. I finally got a shot of the egg. Not sure of the official status. Any info would be appreciated. Big Bear has closed their chat due to server overload. Prayers for Jackie Shadow and little ones coming. Shadow is on nest, Ravens are hovering, he just called for Jackie to take over.
via Big Bear Eagles Facebook*** unofficial update*** 10am view of Jackie checking over her eggs. We will probably have to wait for switchover with Shadow before we have a clearer view. But remember that at this stage of the hatching the little bobblehead is likely to be wet from the liquid inside the egg sac. It also can take 36 hours for it to be fully free of the broken eggshell.

Via Big Bear3/20/21 Update : We are sad to report, after egg 1 began to hatch, it appears that sometime during the day on 3/19 the eaglet passed away. Egg 2 is still in the nest and being cared for by the parents.
Here is a little history I gathered on Big Bear Jackie & Shadow...
2021 first egg laid January 6th, it was destroyed by Ravens, 2nd egg January 9th, it was then destroyed by Ravens. January 13th Jackie was in a difficult labor with 3rd egg and it broke inside of her. However, Jackie & Shadow have a second clutch :) first egg February 8th, 2nd egg February 11th, Pip watch started March 15th. Unfortunately during hatching the baby did not survive. :-* Egg 2 will be at 37 days old this evening March 20th.
2020 season Jackie & Shadow incubated 2 eggs for 64 days before leaving them unattended for the first time in order to say "goodbye". Incubation is typically around 35 days.
2019 season Jackie & Shadow had 2 little ones, Simba & Cookie. During a snowstorm in May, Cookie passed away. Simba on the other hand was their one & only and he was a "HANDFUL" :) He was a lot of fun to watch. He had a successful fledge. I miss him!! ;)

Shadow arrives to the nest at dusk and does his thing moving a few sticks and Jackie will fly in shortly afterwards. They both move a few sticks and then have their signature beaky kissy moment at 3:20! So nice to see our lovebirds back on the nest before they take off to roost for the evening! The U.S. Forest Service is planning a major landscape restoration project for the entire north side of Big Bear Valley, including the location of Jackie and Shadow's nest. This undeveloped parcel of land, partially bordered by the San Bernardino National Forest, is a critical habitat area for Big Bear’s only year-round resident Bald Eagles. Their shoreline habitat and nesting neighborhood could be destroyed to the point that they abandon their nest and leave the area.

Plans are for large amounts of landscape clearing with prescribed fires, mechanical and hand brush clearing, plus miles of new trails through the habitat. We understand some of the motives and requirements behind their plan, but the Environmental Analysis on it, released for public review, sadly has several major flaws in evaluating the impact to Bald Eagles.
Major issues with the FS Environmental Analysis regarding theEagles are: 1) One of
the trails, planned to be moved, currently goes nicely around the eagle nesting area -- but the new location for that trail would run straight through the eagle nesting habitat. And it appears that the plan will also allow e-bikes on that trail. That much activity nearby may cause them to find a new nesting site. 2) The plan assumes that the nesting season starts in early January, just as the eggs are laid, and proposes for work to be done near the nest right up until that moment. Anyone watching the camera knows that the nesting season starts with courtship and nest building activities in October, just as it has done this week. If trail-building, prescribed fires and mechanical clearing are done right up to January, Jackie and Shadow might not lay eggs at all and possibly abandon the area. 3) The plans for working around roosting areas are based on mappings of roosting areas done nearly 30 years ago and updated 11 years ago—nothing current. It is an inaccurate assumption to say the eagles roost in the same places all these years later. This data must be updated to the current situation before the plans to lessen impact can be properly made and evaluated.

A HUGE Thank you to everyone in the forum who took the time submitting comments to the Forest Service last October regarding saving Big Bear Eagles Jackie & Shadow's nesting neighborhood from housing development. This would ultimately cause our Eagle family to abandon their nest and leave the area.

Besides having an awesome baby chick to show off to the world, Jackie and Shadow would like to announce some other great news!
—Friends of Big Bear Valley WON the legal action they filed against the County for approving the Moon Camp housing development without sufficient environmental analysis. With the court’s ruling, the County’s approval of this development must be withdrawn until further environmental analysis is done.
. This controversial project, a 50-home luxury housing development, was planned for a now beautifully forested 64 acres less than a mile from Jackie and Shadow’s nest! This area currently serves as foraging habitat for Jackie and Shadow to be able to feed their new little chick. The site is so close it can be seen in the background from the nest camera.
. Besides being habitat for our bald eagles, a fully protected species under California law, this land also hosts other protected species, such as the San Bernardino flying squirrel and rare plant species. The court ruling stated that the environmental study for the development failed to consider wildfire evacuation conditions and did not mitigate the project’s harms to the ash-grey paintbrush and pebble plain habitat, a habitat and species that exist only in Big Bear Valley, and nowhere else in the world.
. Friends of Big Bear Valley was joined by 2 other conservation groups—the Center for Biological Diversity and the San Bernardino Valley Audubon Society—in filing this action. We would like to thank everyone involved, including our awesome environmental attorneys at the law office of Babak Naficy.
. What’s next?
– the developer could file an appeal to this ruling (we will know in the next few weeks whether this happens)
-- the developer could re-do the environmental impact report to include the analyses that the court says are missing and request a new project approval from the County

Pip watch begins on 2/15. Jackie & Shadow had spent long periods of time away from the nest for the first time yesterday, so hoping we have some little ones in there moving around. ((prayers for little ones))💜 The nest is located in Big Bear Valley in the San Bernardino Mountains of Southern California. It is about 145 feet up in a Jeffrey Pine tree. Egg1 was laid 1/11. Egg2 was laid during a winter storm 1/14.

Jackie seems to have accepted that these eggs are not going to hatch.
Yesterday, she made a midday visit to the nest for some leftover frozen lunch, but did not sit on the eggs all day.
As has happened in the past, Shadow seems more reluctant to let go. He sat a few times on the nest, but was in and out, like he couldn’t make up his mind. He left the eggs alone for a few hours…
…then apparently couldn’t handle leaving them by themselves all night. He returned last night after dark to incubate the eggs again. Shortly after he settled in, Jackie arrived. They had a loud, serious back and forth discussion. After what sounded like an intense argument, and then some begging from Jackie, Shadow got up and flew off the front porch.
Jackie acted a bit unsure about getting into the nest bowl, then finally moved in and sat on the eggs…but she only stayed put for 3 minutes. She got up and flew off the back porch toward Shadow on a nearby roost tree. As soon as she left the nest, Shadow started chortling from the roost tree, sounding upset. They argued back and forth again. Within a minute of them finishing that discussion, Shadow arrived back on the nest and took over sitting on the eggs for the night.
It seems that Jackie, as she has done in the past, was working to get Shadow to accept what was happening with the eggs. Since she only stayed a few minutes, she may have only come in to sit on the eggs so that Shadow would leave. When she left, Shadow’s loud and immediate reaction, then lots of intense chortling back and forth seemed again like an argument. Apparently, Shadow did not agree with her decision to leave the eggs. To fix it, he came to the nest immediately to sit on the eggs himself. He spent the whole night on the nest, leaving about 4:30 this morning. So, in spite of what Jackie may have wanted, he did what he needed to do.
Today, it seems that Jackie finally convinced him to accept what was happening—neither of them visited the nest or sat on the eggs all day.
From here, we will see what happens with the eggs. It is possible that a raven or other predator might get them. It is possible that they get buried into the nest if Jackie and Shadow start bringing sticks. It is possible that Fiona (the flying squirrel who visits the nest at night) will try to carry them away—she has tried in the past, but the eggs were way too big for her to pick up.
…we will also watch to see what happens with laying new eggs. It is possible that Jackie will lay another clutch of eggs. Bald eagles normally lay one clutch per year, but when something happens to the first eggs, they sometimes lay a second clutch. Jackie has done this in the past and has laid eggs as late as March. Jackie and Shadow were viewed mating since these original eggs were laid, so anything is possible. As always, they and mother nature get to determine what happens from here.

As a blizzard rolled in to Southern California's Big Bear Valley late last month, Jackie the bald eagle was doing what any caring mother would: protecting her children at all costs.
Jackie sat atop her two eggs for hours at a time, keeping watch so long that the falling snow blanketed everything but the faintest outline of her beak and tail. The attentive mama would doze off, get up to shake off the snow, check on the eggs and then nestle back down on them. (Her record is 27 hours.)
As Jackie faithfully cared for the eggs, her global fan base watched closely via a crystal-clear webcam that has been documenting her daily life since 2016.
The camera has captured the highs and lows of life as an American bald eagle. In more than 10 years in Big Bear Valley, Jackie has lost about a dozen eggs and eaglets, raised three hatchlings, fallen for two mates, braved blizzards and fought off countless enemies.
Most recently, Jackie has been struggling with her latest heartbreak.
A star is born
Jackie became the first eaglet hatched in Big Bear Valley in 2012, according to Friends of Big Bear Valley, a preservation group that operates Jackie's webcam and meticulously documents her life and that of her trusty mate, Shadow.
Jackie's parents, Ricky and Lucy, became the first known adult eagles who decided to stay in Big Bear Valley, which until then had only been a part-time winter destination for the species.
Big Bear resident Sandy Steers lives only a half-mile from where Jackie was born and watched her grow up from a distance.
"You could see her practicing flying, you could see them (Lucy and Ricky) bringing her food," Steers said. "I stood there for hours every day just watching because I was fascinated. That got me hooked and then I just wanted to see more."
That's when Steers and U.S. Forest Service employee got the idea to put up a webcam. It took two years to raise the $10,000 needed to buy and install the solar-powered camera, which sits 120 feet off the forest floor.

Finding fame
Jackie lived in relative eagle obscurity before the webcam was installed. Now her YouTube page and a daily live chat require multiple moderators, who hail from Florida, Nebraska, Arizona and the Netherlands, reflecting Jackie's global fan base.
Jackie's popularity also has been bolstered by a Facebook page that has more than a half million followers who enjoy video highlights and regular, detailed updates.
In 2017, the camera captured Jackie's first romance. As thousands watched, she mated with an eagle named Mr. B, and the couple's eggs hatched in 2018.
In 2019 Shadow & Jackies little one ((Cookie)) died after a 24-hour rainstorm but the other, named Stormy, survived and left Big Bear that summer.

Soon after, a new male came to town, chased off Mr. B and stole Jackie's heart.
The interloper, Shadow, and Jackie have been together ever since, producing at least 11 eggs. Only two have survived: Simba and Spirit.
Who's the boss? Anyone who watches the eagle cam for even a few hours will quickly begin to observe the birds' many quirks. Personality wise, Jackie is definitely the boss. "She's very determined, very serious, and she expects to get her way," Steers said.

Jackie is also also bigger than Shadow and the main defender of the nest, which has to be guarded from ravens and other predators who would eat the couple's eggs. Though Shadow has to weather Jackie's moods, he's her perfect match. Unlike Mr. B.
"She bossed Mr. B around like crazy and he was kind of wimpy," Steers said. "But Shadow kind of stands up to her sometimes, and she seems to like that better."
A heartbreak and some hope
Since mid-January, Jackie and Shadow's followers have been excited for their two new eggs, tuning in to watch them dote over the future eaglets.
A Facebook post last week broke the bad news about the eggs, now many days overdue.
"It appears now that Jackie and Shadow’s eggs are not going to hatch," Tuesday's post said. "We cannot know exactly why — they could have not been fertilized, or could have stopped developing somewhere along the process ... We will simply trust that nature knows best what it is doing and why."
One fan wrote that she was "heartbroken for these two loving and dedicated eagle parents."
"I love these two and my heart just breaks for them," another user wrote. "All the hard time laying on the nest through all this bad weather and never giving up. Bless them."
As of Saturday, Jackie and Shadow were still dutifully caring for the eggs, though they've started leaving them unattended for hours at times.

Based on their previous behavior with eggs that never hatched, Jackie and Shadow may continue to care for the eggs for several weeks before giving up, Steers said.
Although it's a big blow both to the eagle parents and their followers, there's still hope for eaglets this year, Steers said.
The couple have mated recently and still have time to lay more eggs, a possibility that will be closely monitored by their followers.
"Thankfully Jackie and Shadow still have many years of being able to hatch eggs!" one fan wrote on Facebook. "Looking forward to continuing to watch them."

Jackie and Shadow, Nature and eggs…
We understand that everyone is worried about the eggs.
We wish there was an obvious pip that we could report, but so far, there is not. We do not know why or how. But that is nature.
Eggs 2 and 3 are still within the possible hatching window. Egg 1 is probably not.
If and when a pip happens, we do not have to know about it instantly. We will see it soon enough. Watching nature builds our patience.
Jackie and Shadow have not given up on anything and continue their dedicated egg care.

It was definitely dirt or a spec of some sort ;) ::) On my streaming TV it did look like that spot is moving but it's just the darn pixels pixelating ;) thanks for the update, I may have duplicated some things, my apologies... hang in there and good things will come to Big Bear soon... talons crossed!💜
