Still no egg here - Melbourn has one

Diamond still does NOT like starling, and crabbed so much when Xavier brot her one that he left with it - 2 days in a row! Slow learner!

August 26 in USA, 27 in Oz
Today'd be 25 days - right?
So right about October 1 we should see a lil chickie!
Then watching them should give us our birdcam fix til eagle get crackin!

Holly on bcaw posted

Orange Australia time
Eggs in 2020 were laid on Aug 27 (about 4 am), Aug 29 (about 4 pm), and Sept 1 (about 2 am). For Diamond in the past, the time from first egg laid to first egg hatched was:
2015 = 38 days
2016 = 37 days
2017 = 36 days
2018 = 36 days
2019 = 37 days

A new cam has been ordered to replace the nest cam!! If it arrives before the first egg hatches, it will be installed right away. The cams are actually located outside the box, just looking through holes in the walls, so disruption to Diamond would be minimal. (Cam'll likely get the stink eye from Diamond!)

ONE CHICK
Oct 8, 2020
It appears egg 3 only half hatched, cant make it out.
Hatchling #1 appears not alive, was never strong, fell over a lot.
Mum stept on one.
One chick is strong

It too soon for final, but this looks like it.

For days I have believed Diamond will only raise ONE chick this year.
Eggs 1 and 3 took too long to hatch.
When egg 1 hatched at last, Diamond stepped on the chick.
It survived awhile, falling over a lot. It ate some, finally died.

Egg 3 cracked open enuf I saw movement inside myself.

Chick is egg 2 and appears healthy - so far

I cant imagine what Xavier may be thinking - or what he may do.
He loves his young so much.

Tough report but true.

ONE CHICK
Oct 12, 2020
Xavier brought prey and tried to feed Diamond.  Sweet.
It was too dark for an image.

Yesterday he was 3 hours late bringing prey, was concerning.
I wondered if Di has a new mate. No one else thinks so.
She laid 3 eggs, only 1 surviving chick.

Izzy
Oct 14, 2020
They named the lone chick - Izzy
Diamond is not allowing her mate to feed the chick.
In past years her males have fed the chicks.
When male brot prey yesterday, he fed her a bite first. Sweet.

Since I cant tell male from female, you KNOW I cant tell if this is a new male or Xavier!
Just by behavior I think its a new male.
The nest cam chat calls it Xavier.

Izzi was loving living on the edge, but ended up tumbling out of the nest box! Although he was almost ready to fledge, a little more time was needed. The next day, Izzi was spotted wandering on the road, so he was rescued by FalconCam Project staff and placed back in the nest box to have more time to mature. Quite the adventure for a young falcon!  The unhatched egg was also retrieved for research purposes. Diamond and Xavier can be seen flying outside, monitoring the situation and giving alert calls.

IZZY FLEDGED
Nov 19, 2020
From watching RRP for years, I figured Izzy wouldnt stay in box long and he didnt.
I hope he's safe.  I wonder if Izzy is walking now .....  He fledged, then hit a window

Cilla Kinross chat
'Izzi was spotted early afternoon after having a (non- fatal) collision with a window.
he since moved off. I have been looking for him.

Mod Nov 19 - After fledge, Izzi struck a window; Cilla determined that he could not fly, so she caught him and took him to a veterinarian for evaluation

NEWS...  Izzi will have to spend the night at the vet.   I'll find out how is after 9 am tomorrow morning.   .Izzi had a successful fledge at 0809 h this morning. I watched him fly well over the far fields.    Unfortunately he came back and hit a window.  I have examined his wings and couldn't find a break, but he didn't seem to be able to fly, so he is now at the vet.   I should find out about him later tonight or tomorrow morning.

Izzy, we are praying for you and your recovery.  We all want to see you soar the skies very soon little man! Izzy has been through a lot in his short life so far and he is strong and has an attitude to boot.  I think he'll be just fine.

The FalconCam Project is a research-based and educational study of the breeding behaviour and diet of peregrine falcons in Australia.  The nest is in a wooden box installed at the top of a water tower at Charles Sturt University near the city of Orange in the Central West region of New South Wales.  To date (2020) we have collected nearly six years? worth of breeding behaviour data and seven years? of prey analysis.
BREEDING RECORD 2020
Three eggs were laid this year: 27, 29 August and 1st September
Two of these eggs hatched on 5th October.  The third one has not hatched and is no longer viable although both still attempt to incubate it long after it died.
Unfortunately, the second chick was very weak and did not thrive.  It died after two days.

NEWS... Update 0950 20 Nov Izzi is now with a raptor carer in Young.
She agrees that the wing does not appear to be broken,
but has arranged for an X ray today at 4.30 pm.
The vet thought there was a 'weakness' on one side and the wings are not exactly symmetrical.
She is concerned that there might be an injury between the shoulders (coracoid, I understand)
which is not determined by physical examination alone.
Izzi has been fed (chicken heart) and hydrated
and is now alone in an aviary and has not attempted to fly.
I will update again this evening when I will no more.
If okay and flying, the carer recommends return to the nest within a week for a successful release,
so the sooner the better.

Update NOV 22 1149AM  Izzi now 509 g and ate 4 mice and one quail.
Update NOV 21 1024AM ...carer says Izzi doing well and already put on 15 grams.
Update NOV 21   After a successful fledge but an unfortunate collision with a window, the same day, Izzi is in care at Young (about 2 hours drive away).  He is in an aviary and eating well (quail, mice and chicken hearts).  His X ray was clear.  No fractures, but he still can't fly and they think he is slightly underweight (483 grams).    He is hungry and taking food easily and will get feathered food as well.  After that, assuming he can fly, he will be returned to the nest.
Update NOV 20 815pm Izzi is in care at Young (about 2 hours drive away).  He is in an aviary and eating well (quail, mice and chicken hearts).  His X ray was clear.  No fractures, but he still can't fly and they think he is slightly underweight (483 grams), possibly with a disease trichomoniasis, although not showing obvious symptoms.  But as a precaution, he is going to be treated for that and fed well so his chest muscles build up a bit for five days.  He is hungry and taking food easily and will get feathered food as well.  After that, assuming he can fly, he will be returned to the nest.  I have made enquiries and young peregrines have been returned to the nest up to three weeks after fledging and there have been no problems with being accepted back.

NEWS... Update 1529 h  22/11/2020 There have been a lot of queries about how long we can keep Izzi away from his parents before he might be rejected.  Although nothing is ever a certainty, the general consensus (WIRES - Wildlife Information and Rescue Service;  Peg McDonald, Higher Ground Raptors (thanks to Peebee) seems to be about three weeks, although of course, the sooner the better and I don't anticipate it being anywhere near that long.  This information comes from successful peregrine falcon fledgling return efforts in this region.    Anyone interested in rehabilitation might want to look at this site https://www.highergroundraptors.com/  especially the round aviaries, where birds can get really good long flights.   NOTE Izzi is not here, but in a regular aviary in Young, although it's possible he might get moved here if he is reluctant to fly.
Same rehab as se21 Sydney Sea Eagles where they took wonderful care of her.

Update via Cilla Kinross... thank you Cilla!!!

NEWS...Update 1239 h 24/11.  I collected izzi from carer (we met half way ish) and put him back in the box with some food.  Xavier has already seen him.  The box hatch is still ajar.  I've taped it up, so it shouldn't open further, but it to fix it now would have meant a lot of noise and disturbance.  Please remember this is a wild bird and he still has a lot of challenges ahead of him.  Peregrines do often land on the ground when they first fledge, but if he lands in a car park or the construction, I'll probably put him in a tree next time!

Update 2030 h 23/11/2020. Izzi has been flying well and straight in the aviary.  He has a bruise on his cere (from the window collision), and has had anti-inflammatory medicine.  There is no evidence of frounce (the name for trichomoniasis in raptors), but he has had antibiotics as a precaution and he has gained weight.  I will be collecting him from a town between here and Young tomorrow morning and hope to have him up the 120 steps plus ladder to his box by lunchtime.

November 19th Izzy fledges unsuccessfully and hits a window in the college, he was rescued and taken to rehab for 4 days returned to the box November 23rd.
November 29th Izzy Final fledge
Mom entices Izzy to come back to box with food and waits patiently. Izzy returns to box and is there everyday.

"After fledging, the Eyass continue to rely on their parents for another 4 ? 6 weeks for food and to master the flying and hunting skills they need in order to survive."

January 10th will be 6 weeks since Izzy's final fledge.

We'll see what happens... good job Izzy!!!

Di's egg is due next week, like clockwork, so I imagine she has evicted Izzi

August 18, 2021
Izzi
(2020 hatch brat) has not been in the box now for 12 days, but we think he is still around from calls.   Parental behaviour continues as normal, with up to three prey a day being delivered to Diamond and preparation of the scrape.  Eggs are expected soon (within a week or two).  Generally, Diamond starts to spend more and more time in the scrape and her backside looks large and fluffy.

Orange, NSW Australia Peregrines home of Diamond & Xavier

Nesting season is quickly approaching in Orange! The average date for Diamond's first egg is August 27, with a historical window of August 20-31 for egg #1 via facebook

Diamond is doing good, looks like the first egg of the season is coming soon!  She is a little puffy and beautiful today...  it's 715am there now. Xavier just brought food and she is not interested... 💜

Congratulations Diamond & Xavier egg #3!!!  I got to see it live today, she was looking puffy so it looked like it might be time. ;)

Xavier brings breakfast right after and Diamond refuses to leave the nest box... she is a tired girl, but hungry!!! :)

It's a 21 second gif and it's still processing so it might be spotty right now... ;)

A table of nest history data! Thanks to Dr. Cilla Kinross.
Here's an old table of the nesting history in Orange.
Diamond has always laid only three eggs, so most likely she is done laying now.
Since Xavier has become Diamond's mate, only two of the three eggs have hatched.
To complete the missing data in the table: in 2019, two chicks fledged.
In 2020, three eggs were laid, two hatched, and one chick lived to fledging (Izzi).

pip watch would start around October 2nd, but hopefully with delayed incubation October 5th.  Celia stated October 5th on youtube.

It wont.  This is her 2nd year only one hatch.

Several YEARS ago a chick half hatched.  It peeped and Di fed it but it didnt survive.  I mentioned that on their blog and their mod called me a liar.  But I remember it

The eggs were laid on 31st August, 2nd and 5th September.  ThIs chick hatched on 8th October.   it seems that we will only have one chick this year as the other eggs are not going to hatch now.   Even Diamond has given up.  The chick took its first 'walk' today. The average time from hatch to fledge (first flight) is 42 days, so about 19th November.  Males often fledge earlier than females.  We don't know yet the sex of this chick.

**Good news update on Diamond's foot injury**
CSU Orange, New South Wales, Australia Falcon Cam. Home of Diamond, Xavier and newly named chick Yurruga "sunny"

You can see here Yurruga tugs on Diamond's injured foot (she may sense a problem) and Diamond has trouble walking & feeding. Nov 3rd
(https://i.gyazo.com/13a7214ea59684c2d43b4a26f53eff48.gif)

You can see here today Diamond is walking much better...

NEWS  5th November
Diamond appears to have mostly recovered from her injuries. Last night she slept well on the rocks and descended at  4:49:15 with just a slight limp.  She was absent for nearly 10 hours five days ago, probably a hunting accident.  Prey arrival has been reduced due to rain, but is adequate.

The chick (now called 'Yurruga', which is Wiradjuri for 'sunny') is now 28 days old; growing really well and sprouting new black feathers;  starting to self feed.   He or she is almost as tall as Xavier.  If it overtakes Xavier in height, we'll know it's a female.

ThIs chick hatched on 8th October.   it seems that we will only have one chick this year as the other eggs are not going to hatch now.   Even Diamond has more-or-less given up.  We think that one egg may be been unfertlised and the other held a chick, but it was too weak (or the shell too thick) for the chick to exit.  If they are still there after fledging, I shall have a look at them and offer them to the Australian Museum.
The average time from hatch to fledge (first flight) is 42 days, so could be about 19th November.  Males often fledge earlier than females.

Thanks Lori, but this has gone on a couple years now.  Here is what catwoman on bcaw said.

Diamond is limping. A couple of people got pics of her foot earlier today. It might be bumble foot, which is an infection of the foot. Many birds can continue on without intervention but the infection does not resolve itself. There's definitely a mark (bruise?) and the underneath of the foot is swollen, like infection is present. Wonder if Cilla can capture her or some biologists?

Are you on Facebook. That is where I got the information.

Yurruga fledged at 0604 h this morning.   He is fine.  He flew for a bit, then landed on the ground near the base of the water tower.  Some some staff found him, rang me.  I caught him, checked him over then placed him in a tree nearby (actually visible from ledge cam).   He was fine and hopefully will get the strength to fly more strongly over the next few days.

Update on the unhatched eggs from Cilla in the box cam chat (Nov 23):
"I had a look at the eggs. One was clearly unfertilised. The other was, I think fertilised, but there was no chick inside. It exploded (big POP) all over me and it was just yellow liquid. No chick remains. I’ll do updates later. I’ll also try to get some confirmation from the museum where there are candling experts (I am not)."

Thanks cat
2020 and 2021 only one chick
Diamond difficulty with her foot / leg
She is an older bird
Will she return next year?
serious question

I will be gobbling for 2 days.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

Update from Cilla Kinross in the box cam video description (Nov 25, approx. 16:00):

Yurruga was spotted today on a roof near the tower, looking a bit wet after a major downpour,
but clearly able to fly. He may return to visit the box when sufficiently competent in a week or two.
I'll be keeping an eye on things, but from a distance.

Sad Diamond has only had 1 fledge in 2 years.
Some males will find a new female when their mate fails.
Diamond and Xavier are just continuing to be falcons.

2018 Diamond fledged 2
2019 she fledged 2
2020 she fledged 1
2021 she fledged 1 which did not survive

November 18, 2022 Update & image from bcaw

NEWS 18th November 2022
Indigo fledged on 11th November at 41 days. He has been flying well and returned to the box under his own steam on the 14th and is still there with his little brother Rubus (today 44 days old, but developing a little slower than Indigo - should fledge within a week). They are both VERY well fed! Yesterday Indigo had a short flight around the tower.

OBIRDUARY

Rubus found dead
NOVEMBER 29, 2022 BY CILLA KINROSS
His body was found by one of our medical staff (who also watch the livestream). Cause of death is unknown. I thought at first broken neck because of the angle, but it seemed intact. I have asked the vet for an autopsy, but she said that the body is too far gone. That’s a pity as I would like to have known whether it was caused by trichomoniasis (canker) as has been suggested by some watchers. We’ve never had a case here, but the parasite could be present in the local pigeon population and transferred in the prey. It’s quite common in urban peregrine chicks where they fed pigeons as a staple.

So it looks like he died a few days after last seen on 23rd November. I don’t think he made it back to the box. He was found fairly close to where he was last seen, several hundred metres from the tower.
