I'm restarting this thread in the hope that it won't be erased again. Please feel welcome to post about the NE Florida Bald Eagle Cam.

GOOD NEWS: NE24 is thriving, eating like a champ, healthy ps, casted 2 pellets so far, active and chatty, and the pin feathers are poking thru! 🙏

AEF cam staff diligently monitors and inspects the adults and eaglets through the season. On February 20th, our volunteer staff noticed the appearance of two lesions on NE24, after consultation with our veterinary staff, we believe the eaglet is showing symptoms of a potential Avipoxvirus (also known as Avian pox) infection.
Avian Pox is common in warm, humid areas, and can be traced to seasonal mosquito increases. Avian Pox can range from mild to severe. In mild to moderate cases, it can cause permanent scarring, with more severe cases, fatalities can occur.

The Northeast Florida (NEFL) Nest is a wild nest and infections such as Avian Pox can naturally take place. American Eagle Foundation policy, crafted in conjunction with USFWS guidelines, prohibits interference in a wild nest unless the situation can be directly linked to a man-made threat. As always, we hope for the best with all of our eagle cam families, but we must advise viewer discretion.

SWFL 55 days old today!!! E17 hatched 1-23-21 at 4:41pm. E18 hatched 1-23-2021 at 6:26pm. Both eaglets removed from nest by Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW) on 1-29-21 and re-nested on 2-5-21.

E17 and E18 stand confidently tall and exercise their stunning wings in the breeze. They teeter close to the edge and spend hours tracking all that happens around and beyond the nest tree. The nest becomes smaller as they approach adult size. Their sleek dark juvenile feathers have them so closely matched, a slight white fringe on E18’s tail can help tell them apart. In a flash of time, E17 and E18 have grown into impressive strong beauties.

Another Owl strike early this morning knocking Harriet off the nest. She is OK. 4th one in March so far.

Early this morning at 03:12 AM EST, a GHO (great horned owl) targeted and hit Harriet while she was sleeping on the veranda. The owl knocked her off the branch ~ Harriet grabbed a hold of E17's leg as she frantically tried to grip the rails on the nest. She let go of E17's leg as she fell from the nest. Harriet recovered and flew around and came back to land on the nest alerting loudly and calling for M. She stayed on the nest protecting the E's and continued to vocalize off and on for some time. She remained on guard for any return of the owl. Thankfully she and E17 are okay that was a close call! In regular time and slomo with multi cam angles! Thank you for watching!

E17 has taken a big step this morning and branched on the veranda at 8:42 AM EST!! E17 winged all across the nest before jumping up on the veranda branch! Congratulations E17 on hitting this important mile stone at 62 days old! The average age for branching here at the SWFL nest is 66 days!

E17 has a nice dismount back to the nest and will go back up for a second time and enjoy the spectacular view! Another perfect dismount and E17 is back to the nest and shows off to E18 with more flapping!! What an exciting morning for E17 and E18 won't be far behind in branching as well. At the nest of Samson and Gabrielle (NEFL Nest) Legacy fledged from the nest tree after a slight slip on a branch, then safely returns about 30 minutes later. This video shows two views of the fledge and return as well as the long range view from cam 3. Congratulations to Legacy...well done! We are so proud and so happy to have you safely home!

At 3:10 jd finds Legacy on cam 2! We also have her on Cam 3 but zoomed out in case she flies. Occasionally you can see her flapping her wings. Legacy has been on this branch below Wallenda now for 3 hours. She seems very comfortable.

Legacy was perched on the Lookout Point Branch early this morning when she was hit by an owl and knocked off. It looked like a Barred Owl. The Cam Op later found her perched below the nest. She soon made her way back to the nest where she is hoping for parents to bring her a fish. She appears unharmed.

As most of you are aware, Samson has not been seen at the nest since Thursday evening; however, he and Gabrielle were spotted perched together Friday morning on a nearby tree off cams. We are concerned that Samson has not returned to the nest, and can assure you that everything is being done to try to find his whereabouts. When we have any information at all, we will post updates. We appreciate everyone's concerns and prayers for Samson's safe return. ❤️

AEF NEFL ~ Intruder Lands On Branch! Gabby Defends Her Nest & Chases Off! Samson Is Missing 11.27.22 https://youtu.be/lx4UhY6aTJ4 via LadyHawk

Gabby was perched on a branch when all of a sudden an intruder eagle lands on a neighboring branch! Gabby did not like it and vocalized her displeasure. Some people thought this eagle was Samson but it clearly was not him. This eagle is younger, thinner and has black tips on its tail feathers along with some dark feather spots on its head and some discoloration on its beak all indicating it is probably a male just turning 5 years old.

After several minutes of Gabby's vocals, the intruder flew to the nest and began to move around the nesting material. Gabby then lands on the nest and drove him out - biting his wing and chasing him off. The eagle flew to a branch above the nest for a couple of minutes before flying off. Gabby remained in the nest tree and is okay. I have included coverage from cam 1, 2, 3 and 4!

The presence of another eagle with Samson missing now for three days is very concerning. One of the causes of an eagle going missing is a territorial fight - and we rarely get to see this on the cam. An intruder eagle fought with Juliet back in 2018 and that is what caused her to go missing and never return to the nest and for Romeo to ultimately leave as well with the nest failure. So continued prayers for Samson's well being and for a safe return. Thank you for watching!

The intruder did return later this evening and is perched on sunset branch while Gabby is sleeping on the wallenda branch. It is peaceful for now but this is raw nature and we don't know how this will all play out.

Its so cute how he is the young of the former nest owners.
I'd hate to see that end.

AEF~NEFL Nest Cam~This video shows the interaction between Gabby and the visitor. Gabby went to the nest early am and was vocal for sometime. Was she calling for Samson, was she voicing her displeasure of the visitor? Only Gabby knows! She did share some time with the other eagle in the nest this am. I am not quite so sure she was happy with the eagle moving her stick rails. Our ground crew searched the area for Samson today and found no signs of him. The visitor Dec 2 evening returned December 3 evening and Gabby more or less accepted him. Both in nest together for awhle, digging around. Finally Gabby bit him - which can be pre-mating play. I think the stranger is a 5 year old - my guess.

It doesnt appear to me Samson will return.

V2 arrives to the nest waiting for Gabby and we get to see some really good closeups of his unique feather coloring! V2's feathers may or may not get lighter in the coming months or years. Some eagles will retain some darker colors throughout their life - some will take several more months or even a year or more to achieve their white feathers. It will be interesting to see how V2's look will be in the upcoming weeks and months if he sticks around

V2 Flies Out To Meet Gabby!
AWESOME JOINT RETURN & Mating Afterwards!!
V2 was watching for Gabby and he flies off to meet her! We see them both flying back in together and vocalizing! V2 was very happy to have Gabby back home! Multiple cam views of the fly in (Cam 1,3 & 4). Nice views of both on the wallenda branch and then V2 vocalizes and flies to the nest. He returns all excited and he mates with Gabby for the 2nd time (on cam). After waiting for Gabby all day, looks like V2 really missed her

Young eagles a-plenty just kept coming and coming.
Gabby spends all day away from nest.

3 Visiting eagles - my guess - are ages 2 or 3, 4 and 5 years old.
My guess is the 3 year old is female and the 4 year old is male.
2 of them arrived together aa if they're friends, one was chuckling, vocals
They act like a mated pair - but the 3 year old is too young - ???

A Juvie (V5) & A Sub Adult (V4) Arrive in The Nest together
V4 a sub adult flew in to the nest and was immediately followed by a juvie (V5). They had a brief interaction on the nest with the juvie chasing V4 out to the branch and then V4 took off.

V5 looks bigger than V4 - juvies are usually larger than the adults due to their longer flight feathers. But it could also be that V5 is a female with its larger size as well. There is no way to know the gender of this young eagle at this point. I believe V4 is a male due to its size, its behavior and its high pitch vocals. V4 will return later in the afternoon along with Gabby.

The saga of the visitors continues into the evening with the return of the sub adult V4 (who was first seen for the first time today). Gabby flies in to the nest tree and V4 is hot on her tail! They both are vocal and V4 will land on the nest briefly before heading back to the branch. Gabby is not happy with V4 being here and she is making that known in her vocals. V4 is watchful no doubt seeing other eagles near by the nest tree.

A few minutes later, Gabby turns around on her branch and V4 attempts to join her but gets a sharp rebuke! Gabby screams and wingslaps V4 right off the branch! V4 will fly around and land back on its original perching spot. Then Gabby flies off and V4 takes off as well.

These 2 are a pair - friends - came TOGETHER 2 days in a row. The male appears to be a 4 year old and the female appears to me to be barely age 3 and willing to mate. Pretty mature for a barely 3 year old

I dont know what the problem is there.
The chatroom is claiming there've been 9 or 10 visitors - one was female juvie.

A male spent the night last night.
I think its V6 but chatroom says its V10

V10 Attempts To Return
V9 Waits For Gabby, Moss Deliveries & Roosting Overnight
We saw 2 visitors and Gabby in her nest tree. Earlier the latest visitor, V10 came to the nest for a short stay and then departed. V10 decided to return and was seen incoming with his landing gear down but Gabby thwarted that move and chased him off. A few minutes later, V9 arrives back and he perched in the tree and was in and out.

Gabby flew in with two deliveries of moss and put it on the nest. This is a very encouraging sign as Gabby had not done any nestorations in the past week. I think she wanted V9 to drop down and help with the moss but he didn't. He flies off and so does Gabby.

Late in the afternoon, V9 returned and he waited for Gabby to come back but she never did. V9 went to the nest briefly and laid down but then went back to LOP. V9 did a big ps in the nest before flying off. lol Gabby did finally return after dark and is roosting in the nest tree alone. What will tomorrow bring for Gabby and her suitors?

Today was an action packed day and we now have a new visitor to add to the growing list - V11. Early in the morning, Gabby flies in to the nest carrying some nesting material/fluff. We see that she has blood stains on her feathers above her left eye and around her gape. It is unknown how this happened to her but she did not come to the nest all day yesterday. The blood stains could be caused by a minor injury or could be result of eating messy prey. I did get a very good look at Gabby's talons and they were spotless - no blood or dirt on them at all which indicates to me that this was probably some type of injury or skirmish. If it was prey, her talons would have blood on them from eating it. AEF noted Gabby had a minor injury to her beak as well. Gabby appears to be fine and is otherwise healthy!

V11 flies in to LOP early and exchanges vocals with Gabby before he drops to the nest and does some nestorations and moves some sticks and fresh pine sprigs. V11 is the eleventh visitor to come to the Hamlet after Samson went missing on Nov 25th 2022. V11 is an adult male and Gabby seems to have accepted his being at the nest in and out all day today (and he is roosting overnight with her too!).

V11 has a distinct mark of dark feathers located at the base of his neck where the white feathers are meeting the brown feathers. This is a great ID for him! V11 also has different tail markings and gapes which distinguishes him from the other eagles. The coolest part of V11 is he started to bring in sticks right away to the nest! His first move was to fly off LOP and grab a branch going upside down and bring to the nest (included in slomo!) Then a couple minutes later he arrives with a stick in his beak!

Gabby and V11 both worked on the nest together and Gabby even gives him a tiny nip to let him know she is boss! :) Nice closeups of the dark feathers on V11 are included at the end of the video. Just as a side note, these dark feathers are most likely permanent. Harriet at SWFL has very similar dark feathers at the base of her neck like this that we refer to as "Harriet's heart" and is a permanent ID for her. Her feathers are in the shape of a heart! I hope that V11 will be the LAST eagle and that he and Gabby can form a relationship but that is up to V11 and Gabby ♥ Thank you for watching! I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas! Gabby & V11 Alert! V11 Defends The Nest
2 Eagles Flying Overhead!
Both Gabby and V11 have been in the nest tree off & on Dec. 25th. Gabby's dark stains on her head (possible injury) are looking a lot better today! Gabby is perched on the branch when she sees V11 flying in and they both begin vocalizing loudly. There were two eagles flying over the nest tree (as seen on Cam 3) and Gabby and V11 are watching and tracking the. I wonder who these eagles are - is it one or more of the previous V's?

V11 is vocal and watchful on the nest for several minutes, keeping his eagle eye on them. He flies off suddenly but returns right away and lands on the nest briefly before heading off to one of the branches in the tree. There are a lot of eagles in this Northeast Florida area and both V11 and Gabby have been busy keeping them out away from the nest tree.
