PIP WATCH

May 16, 2019  Thursday
noon  Tawny left the eggs - stood on edge of bridge awhile, then flew off
12.15  JJ came - looks like 3 pips on one egg
12.30   JJ calls her - gets off eggs - walks around - settles back on eggs
2.15  Tawny returns to eggs and JJ beats it outta there
2.30  Tawny looks confused.  I feel sorry for her.

9 am JJ came - WITHOUT FOOD - and she fled
9.15  Tawny returns with a whole bird - JJ leaves fast
9.45  There is hatch #2
Tawny leaves both - new hatch exposed

10 am  There's JJ - without food for chick
He appears as clueless as Tawny and leaves

10  Tawny appears and steps on chick - the edge of her talon appear to hold it on its back
She tries to feed it bits on its back - it keeps kicking
She stept on it again as she left
Poor lil chicks
10.05  She's covering them - older one kicking - on its back
10.30 am SHE FED CHICK 1

FLUFFY PORKERS!
June 16, 2019
Do they have itchy feet to fludge?
30 days old

Flopsy & Mopsy
thats only 2 falcon chicks!  lol   8)

If they wish they can run around on the offcam playground
They are on the very top of the bridge (we have to take an elevator to get up there). So they would probably jump onto the roadbed first. There is plenty of boat traffic around there, but not really kayakers. It is big water. There is also a fishing pier.

Pink did the grabbing and ate first (her eye area is pink)
Male got it from her at some point (assuming male)
so both ate

Mom has never seen this before - but has likely participated!   8)

THEY ARE IN - ATTACK PARENT! - mode!   :o

Richmond Falcon Cam Kicks Off a New Decade
MARCH 3, 2020

2019 a banded male Peregrine Falcon (24/AU), paired with a female that hatched and was banded in Delaware. The same male has been seen on camera over the past several weeks with a female with no leg bands. A stable pair has yet to establish itself at the site and there has been no breeding since 2018.

Although we are heartened by the reappearance of last year?s male, the bond between him and the new female may still be in flux: approximately one week ago, an observer from a partner agency observed three falcons circling over a nearby downtown building. He noted a male giving chase to a female. This suggests that there may still be competition for a breeding spot on the falcon territory.

New Female Continues to Bond with Male
March 20, 2020

Ever since 95/AK established herself as the new female of the pair, she and banded male (24/AU) have regularly been seen courting.  We have observed multiple instances of courtship feeding, with the male bringing prey to the female.  We have also seen head-low bow courtship displays between the pair at the box.

First Egg
This marks the first egg laid at this site since 2017
APRIL 2, 2020

The female has presented as increasingly lethargic on camera over the past several days, a sign of an upcoming egg laying event. She finally laid her first egg in the early evening of April 2. This marks the first egg laid at this site since 2017, and the first egg ever laid by this particular female. Although we do not yet know how many more eggs she will produce, the average clutch size for peregrine falcons in Virginia consists of 4 eggs. Eggs are laid at intervals of 48 to 72 hrs

Seemed like she was in labor 3 days!

Sometime in the early hours of Sunday, April 5th the female laid her second egg.  We expect a third egg to be laid sometime between April 7th and 8th. The male visited the female in the box and has a turn at sitting on the eggs.

DGIF 1 week report

May 19
May 20 falcon chick will be one week old. Biologists have documented daily feedings by both female and occasionally the male. It is unlikely any of the remaining 3 eggs hatch. Virginia DGIF biologists plan on banding the chick when it is 4 weeks of age. If the unhatched eggs are still intact they will be collected and tested.

Early morning May 30 is a scheduled implosion of One James River Plaza office tower which is right near the falcon nest building.

Richmond Building Demolition
May 22 , 2020
Saturday, May 30th Dominion Energy plans to implode a vacant office building  one block from the peregrine falcon nest.
This implosion may temporarily startle the birds, but NOT result in the adults abandoning the nest.  The chick will be 18 days old and may be mobile and able to venture out of the nest box, but not get up onto the ledge.

This pair had ONE chick that fludged and was taken to rehab.

Falcon Chick Ready for Release
July 15th, 2020
Thanks to the Wildlife Center of Virginia (WCV), the chick is flying competently and is ready for release at Shenandoah National Park.  Although she is flying well, the chick will still need to perfect her landing skills when released to establish a breeding population of peregrines in their historic mountain range in Virginia.

The chick was transported to SNP July 15th where she is being held (and fed) in a hack box for 48 hours to acclimate to her new location on a natural cliff in the mountains. Upon release she will be free to roam the landscape at will. Along with 2 young male falcons that were hacked at this site in mid-June, she will continue to be fed for a couple of weeks after release while she hones her hunting skills. Hack site attendants will monitor the falcons daily during this time.

Anacapa
March 16, 2021  MYSTERY

Why no 2nd egg?  Male very dedicated to his egg!
This pair lays late March.  Did another female lay his egg there?

Rysx posted March 15
A possible nest takeover was mentioned earlier. I saw several situations with nest takeovers and the “old” egg was typically not destroyed by the “new” nest occupants. But there could be still another scenario: Initially, when our Mr. A arrived, another female appeared, Mr. A mated with her and she laid her egg. Then his regular partner showed up, chased away the usurper.
She would not be interested in this egg, while he would. It will become more probable if this female lays eggs at about her “regular” time.

The egg was laid March 8th, about 2 weeks too early for this pair. Peregrines lay up to 5 eggs, at a 3-4 days interval.

So far, only HopperJet, the male, has been incubating the lonely egg. Lena, the female, keeps running him off. Today, she kicks the egg out of the bowl while making impression in the egg cup. HopperJet arrives later and tucks it back in.

I'm leaning toward the theory that this egg was laid by another female (a passerby?). The current resident female may or may not lay more eggs later. Since the birds are not banded, there is no way to know who, when, what and with whom. Stay tuned!

Cali Condor - Explore - went back thru her photos to compare.
Conclusion - its LIKELY the egg was laid by a young passing female.
This current female may be a 2 year old.
What will become of Solo if this female doesnt lay unknown.

Mom is NOT giving peeks.  Male came but she refused to get up.
I suspect we will have 3 hatchlings by evening.

Sooty babies from coal dust?
Coal is nature so unlikely to harm falcons. I remember Xcel.

North Omaha Station is a natural gas and coal-fired power station owned by Omaha Public Power District in Omaha, Nebraska.

NOTE
Chesapeake falcons, Baltimore Md chicks are a lil grey too, and the eggs looked awful to me.
2 of 4 hatched.  There was a big fire nearby so ash may have fallen on nest.
That female is weird.

Waiting like a cat at a mouse hole ..............

3 pm There's an eggshell - and this chick looks dark gray
She WILL NOT give me a peek, so I *think* there are 3 but unsure

There appears to be a threat. The male comes and goes.
She is chatting - not kakking but more than mumbling to her chicks.
