Watch the Bird Cams's newest addition?American Kestrels?LIVE at http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/channel/58/American_Kestrels/

Four downy American Kestrel nestlings are tucked into a gravel-bottomed nest near Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. The nest box is located on the side of a traditional limestone-footed barn, overlooking a rolling grassland that slopes away into folded hills and forests. Our partners at the Raptor Resource Project have watched kestrels breed at this site for over 25 years, and the wonderful combination of grassland, forest, and water that surrounds the property is an excellent example of the habitat that kestrels need to survive and thrive.

The young birds began hatching out of their eggs on June 14th, and the remaining egg in the nest is unlikely to hatch at this point. Over the next 3-4 weeks the nestlings will transform from downy bobbleheads to sleek, dull versions of their parents on a diverse diet of invertebrates, small mammals, and birds (watch the female arrive to feed her young in the highlight below). After fledging, the young will continue to be cared for by their parents, remaining near the nest as they learn to hunt and master flight.

Unlike Bald Eagles, this Kestrel female grabs the stray chick with her beak and drags it back into the fold. Very interesting.

Male Kestrel Delivers A Snake Snack To His Mate In The Nest Box ? April 18, 2019

April 18, 2019Wisconsin Kestrel Cam Goes Live And Female Lays An Egg!The Wisconsin Kestrels are back for a new season, and the female just laid the first egg this morning! Watch a pair of North America's tiniest falcons begin the breeding season in a brand new nest box thanks to our cam partners at the Raptor Resource Project. The new nest box's simplified design will allow viewers to see the kestrels enter and exit as well as provide better coverage of the nestlings as they tramp around. Also, don?t forget to toggle to the outside cam, where you can view the beautiful surroundings and watch the adults bring in prey. The female has just laid the pair?s first egg. Over the next while, you?ll be able to see the male delivering prey to his mate while she incubates. You also might notice the pair engage in bonding rituals, and if we?re lucky, the male will join his mate in the nest box at night. This first egg is right on time, as the female in the box typically starts laying in mid- to late-April. American Kestrels typically lay 4?5 eggs per clutch?laying one egg every other day?so we should expect a few more Easter eggs to arrive in the coming days

The male American Kestrel makes a pit stop to drop off a snake to his mate in the nest box. In addition to reptiles like this snake, kestrels hunt and eat all kinds of arthropods, small mammals, and small passerine birds.

Watch the cams live at www.allaboutbirds.org/cams

The American Kestrel cam is a collaboration between the Cornell Lab or Ornithology and the Raptor Resource Project.
American Kestrels are just beginning to nest in a gravel-bottomed nest on private property near Prairie Du Chien, Wisconsin. Watch cam.

Don't miss the outside view! A second camera has been installed to give views of the nest box opening from the outside so viewers can observe the kestrels' comings and goings, as well as the nestlings once they begin peering outside. To toggle between the two camera views, click the "switch camera" icon in the lower right of the livestream player, next to the settings wheel.

That was cool with the snake albeit a small one.  :)

Latest from RRP:  "We're on hatch watch at the American Kestrel nest! The incubation period for American Kestrels ranges between 26 and 32 days, meaning at day 29 of incubation, this pair's eggs are primed to hatch at any moment."

Cornell Kestrel Cam ~ Two Kestrel Chicks Hatch Today! Baby On Back Mom Scoops Up 5.21.19

https://youtu.be/o3hcpafgj04 VIA LADY HAWK
We have two hatches to celebrate today at the American Kestrel cam! Congratulations to our Kestrel family! The male was incubating the five eggs and gets up & gives us a nice look at them. The female returns to incubate and one chick hatches underneath her sometime mid afternoon and we get our first peek at it at 6:22 PM (at the 2:03 mark) as the male brings in prey & the female leaves. He sees his chick for the first time and quickly resumes incubation. At 3:25 the female is back incubating and we see a 2nd broken eggshell. She shimmies and fidgets until the 2nd chick can be seen. The male shows back up in the window at 4:19 and leaves. The female eats the egg shell & shimmies on the eggs as the 2nd hatch is seen. She gently pulls the baby closer to her and it falls over on its back at 6:59. No worries, Mom is pro and scoops it back up underneath to brood. Thank you for watching!

Video captured & edited by Lady Hawk

The female laid five eggs - two have hatched today 5.21.19.

The nest box is located on the side of a traditional limestone-footed barn, overlooking a rolling grassland that slopes away into folded hills and forests. Cornell Lab & Raptor Resource Project have teamed up to provide this new live cam.The kestrel is North America?s littlest falcon & packs a predator?s fierce intensity into its small body. It's number one of the most colorful raptors - the male?s slate-blue head and wings contrast elegantly w/rusty-red back & tail. The female has the same warm reddish on her wings, back, & tail.

Only 4 now; this was posted on Cornell's webcam page http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/channel/58/American_Kestrels/ (http://cams.allaboutbirds.org/channel/58/American_Kestrels/):

"May 31, 2019
Youngest Kestrel Chick Dies

We're sad to report that despite the best efforts of the kestrel parents, the youngest chick has died, likely due to being outcompeted for food by its siblings. The youngest kestrel hatched almost 2 days after the next youngest sibling, and never quite caught up. With the additional stress of the black fly outbreak in Wisconsin, it appeared to die sometime during the afternoon on Friday, May 31. It's not uncommon in American Kestrel nests for the last-hatched chick to fail to thrive, apparently unable to compete for food with larger siblings. The following morning the deceased chick was removed to lower the likelihood of black flies being attracted to the body and the remaining 4 chicks."

Wisconsin Kestrels Nest Failure
Unfortunately, the 2020 breeding attempt of the Wisconsin American Kestrels has failed.

After laying 5 eggs and days of dedicated incubation, the female kestrel left the box sometime during the morning of April 28 and never returned. The male kestrel continued to try and incubate the eggs for a day, but he is unable to care for them alone and appears to have abandoned the nesting attempt.

We and our collaborators at the Raptor Resource Project are saddened by the loss but hopeful that kestrels will return to nesting in the box soon. Thank you for watching and we'll hopefully see you and the kestrels back here in 2021!

BREAKFAST for 5
May 27, 2021
No date on banding - May 25 - ?

10:45 am  feeding - tug o war with 3 different chicks

1.30 pm  A very wet male entered and she began scolding and scolding.
Its pouring rain, he just wants shelter!
It musta been the Dad, cuz she left him alone with the kids for awhile.

No bands on these 2021 chicks

Oh thank God they cleaned the cam!  UGH!

Dawn  feeding Big Mama wanted it ALL, Mum had to fight her for prey to feed 2 others.
I have not seen the 2 ( males ? ) in back fed for 2 days
They are small and dont fight - 3 in front (females?) fight for the food

It may still be raining - TONS of rain yesterday!

May 28, 2021 afternoon
Mom arrived with a huge bloody - rat?
One chick grabbed it from her
another grabbed it from that one

Poor mom dove into the crazed kids and pulled it away
She fed them in a more or less tidy way

May 29, 2021 afternoon
Just saw Mom arrive and Tiny, the youngest, male I believe, got fed.
My guess is we have 4 females and a male, judging by color and aggression and size.
Mom has dropped off prey several times, and a chicklet grabs it and wont let mom have it

No picture, cam smeared again
They act a little more normal today.
Their legs are SO LONG!  One could almost stand up and look out the hole

I hope #5 gets enough to eat ....

6 pm  I havent seen either parent all day.
They may have visited and I didnt see.
Kids look ready to jump up into the hole and look out.

Thanks Lori
I am glad cam came back!
With all that action, one is likely to fledge soon
Tiny survived, I never saw him fed, I did see him graze

7.30 am  I saw Dad drop off and leave
Parents arent going inside. If they do its in and out FAST!
Yesterday Mom DID go in ONCE and fed them.

Parent dropped off a snake which one grabbed and mantled, but a 2nd chick grabbed an end and a tug o war ensued.

9.30 am  Mom came inside with prey, chick grabbed, mantled.
Mom tried to take it away, chick ATTACKED MOM - but brave Mom took it

I suspect parents now encourage them to fledge
There is a perching limb just outside they can perch on
Kids shud be HAPPY to leave the bugs behind!

They kids have been preening and flapping.
The little male is BEAUTIFUL!  The sun struck him and he's RED
The female's brown is muted in color

FIRST HOLE JUMP
June 5, 2021  I guess holing is the equivalent of branching!  ;D
parent is appearing at window, hangs rat inside, one kid snatches it, runs and mantles
One is VERY keen on looking outside
Flapping intense

11 am  One jumped into the exit hole for the FIRST time
Then suddenly someone else wanted to do it too!

Parents just drop food into the box
Chick grabs, mantles
All 5 still alive - yay
It looks like 3 females and 2 males
The males RED feathers are so showy!

I am so glad they brot both cams back!

I dont know if this is 2 different ones or the same one tried twice

Sweet faces can be seen on outside cam
I've also seen starlings on that branch outside

2 are holing
June 6, 2021  thats the equivalent of branching
One sits in the hole and others yank its feathers
This way they ensure they get the prey - lol

They all lined up for a portait - nice of em!  ;)

2 males
3 females

Cool! I have been checking on them, they change everyday.  I thought it looked like 3 males 2 females. The males are the more colorful ones right? Just guessing here. I was wondering about the parents too and I just thought it was that "tough love, raptor's lesson they give the chicks before fledge." ;)  I did see an adult outside the hole today and one of the chicks was playing with their food literally. They are so funny to watch!  I have a couple pics to post later 8)

They appear to line up
One sits in the hole, the others line up

Later they actually jump on top of the one they're mad at
Aggressive lil guys, constant motion

I am sticking to 2 males.  8)

HATCHED May 12
Fledging occurs about 30 days after they hatch
So about June 12

I find I am eager for them to fledge - yet hate to see them go.
