Thanks for all the pics and links and posts everyone! :)
A pair of Hooded Mergansers hang out regularly on my retention pond. They are so cute and fun to watch - especially as we approach spring and mating and nesting season. Every once in a while another male hooded merganser shows up to try to woo the female, but her mate defends and it can get very "nippy"-and-tuck on the pond. Mating displays between the male and female are very special for me to get a glimpse of from time to time.
Happy Day to all the EagleCrest followers! :)

February 5, 2018, Monday, 11:00am -- Pied-Billed Grebe -- Meee Panning
Pied-Billed Grebe blends in with weeds and grasses. Cam 8, by a rock. Wondering if this might be a future nest site??
https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Pied-billed_Grebe/id Part bird, part submarine, the Pied-billed Grebe is common across much of North America. These small brown birds have unusually thick bills that turn silver and black in summer. These expert divers inhabit sluggish rivers, freshwater marshes, lakes, and estuaries. They use their chunky bills to kill and eat large crustaceans along with a great variety of fish, amphibians, insects, and other invertebrates. Rarely seen in flight and often hidden amid vegetation, Pied-billed Grebes announce their presence with loud, far-reaching calls.

clarindagirl, thanks! ha ha about the rude female hooded merganser! I love watching the hooded mergansers that stop by the pond next to my house (in southeastern NC). They are really pretty and fun to watch. I have seen the male merganser get aggressive and nippy with any other male that tries to get his "girl's" attention, but I've never seen a female merganser behave that way. LOLOL, she must've been saying, "Go away! He's mine all mine!" :D :D ;) :D

Thanks Rob, and everyone! Great scaps and posts!
Please, does anyone know yet if it was discovered what the "blob" on the pond was a couple of days ago that some wondered about if it might be a dead bird? Maybe someone knows if they never found anything, or if no one know if anyone went to look and see what it was, or maybe it was determined to be that, or something else? Anything known about that by anyone here? Thanks!

PeepSpy - Wilma started incubating after she laid 7 eggs (Mar 3rd) Any that hatch will have to have had 25-28 days of continual proper temps and as she rolls them at least daily and mixes them up, odds are not good that any of hers will have received that.... at this stage, any that hatch we're pretty sure are going to be the Intruder's goslings-she *might* get 1 or 2 :'(

Has the gosling been seen that tumbled overboard last night? Anyone know if Fred was seen under the nest there this morning protecting the overboard gosling? Any news at all about that situation from anyone would be much appreciated... even if it's to say no one knows either way. Fingers crossed the little gosling who went overboard is safe... but I know there are many factors involved in that.

Thanks for the posts and pics! I'm a little confused, but I think I have figured out what has been said about the hatches and near-hatch of Wilma and Fred's 4 eggs. Let me see if I have this right... 3 of their eggs hatched and a 4th did not survive to fully hatch. Is that right? Of the 3 goslings that did hatch, 2 of them fell overboard the side of the nest, and neither of those 2 goslings have been seen since then. The other gosling that successfully hatched has beem seen following Fred and Wilma on the ground and swimming in the pond. Did I get that right? Please let me know. Congrats to Wilma and Fred for persevering in the face of many obstacles. :-* :-* :-* I have only the best of wishes for them and their 1 surviving gosling this year, with sympathy for all followers of this nest on the loss, or possible loss, of any of the other gosling hatches and potential hatches here this year. ((HUGS)) Thanks again for posting news and updates and pics.

WILMA & FRED :) Another year of stress for our first family of Canada Geese :( They picked this nest at top of home tree in 2012. It was built with the remains of the Red-tailed Hawk nest that the Santa Ana Winds blew out of the tree late in the fall 2011.
The first year of 7 goslings and the little goose trains with Betty & Barney were so memorable :-*
In the 7 years of them nesting in this "penthouse" so many events have happened, some wonderful, some not!! Wilma has hatched many eggs, not all of the goslings survived :( Over the years, I believe she has left the nest with 27 goslings including this last 1 and the 1 that went overboard last year (Fred had to babysit a few hours) This year Wilma laid 7 eggs. Trudy's visited often even tho Fred was able to stop some of them, but, looks like she had 13 additional eggs to deal with during the time it takes to incubate. She did her best and we were happy to see 2 goslings Thursday morning, Then another hatch Thursday night. The gosling that was trying to get out of its egg for hours last night did not survive. Last night the strongest one was walking around the nest and got on the edge and toppled over (it has not been found yet) :( This morning the 2nd one was roaming around the nest & it too went over the edge (It has not been seen yet either) :( This afternoon, Wilma left the nest and this last gosling followed her soon after. They have been seen swimming, resting, eating and even though it is not a full day old it is trying to keep up with Mom & Dad ;D
We wish them well and will enjoy seeing them "around the Pond" ;D
Information is from my records only, not official :)
Great overview. Thank you.
-
Poor Wilma! :'(

Thanks so much for the updates with Wilma & Freds's nest 💖 So happy a lil one survived and thanks, as always, for great coverage.

April 19, 2018, Thursday, 11:36am -- Great Blue Herons -- Meee Panning
EC Nest Building Time for Great Blue Heron Pair
Cornell: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Great_Blue_Heron/lifehistory NEST DESCRIPTION
Male Great Blue Herons collect much of the nest material, gathering sticks from the ground and nearby shrubs and trees, and from unguarded and abandoned nests, and presenting them to the female. She weaves a platform and a saucer-shaped nest c up, lining it with pine needles, moss, reeds, dry grass, mangrove leaves, or small twigs. Nest building can take from 3 days up to 2 weeks; the finished nest can range from a simple platform measuring 20 inches across to more elaborate structures used over multiple years, reaching 4 feet across and nearly 3.5 feet deep. Ground-nesting herons use vegetation such as salt grass to form the nest.

VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW :) We found this bird on branch of home tree Sunday evening :o The close up of its face indicates it is the Violet-Green swallow rather than the Tree swallow :o Picture in black & white so cannot see all the colors on this bird ??? Looking at the white up around the eye and the sweeping long wing feathers, it is different from the tree swallows ::) Maybe one of the nest boxes belong to this swallow ???

Meee found 2 Wood Ducks this morning, they were fishing and having good success. The fish is caught, when duck moves to a place where it can be killed and repositioned for eating. Sometimes the prey was taken behind the floating nest and sometimes to the shore.

Two juvenile RTHs have been fighting over food for quite some time. Just like the old days, this bodes well for the future hawk pairing and nesting season. The victorious winner pulled the food under the bush and is eating.
From Meee:
1 is the smaller hawk and other bigger one don't know which is which --1 has to be male the smaller on and other female : think the one you see is the first one that got food and the other succeeded in taking away and got to feed too : there were 3 hawks in bush

November 17, 2018, Saturday, pm -- Ring-necked ducks -- Vetleo Panning
General Description
A compact duck with a peaked head, the Ring-necked Duck does have a ringed neck, but the ring is almost never visible in the field. Overall, the Ring-necked Duck is similar in appearance to both the Greater and Lesser Scaups. The male Ring-necked Duck in breeding plumage has a deep-black, iridescent head, breast, and rump, and light flanks. Unlike the scaups, the Male Ring-necked Duck has a black back. He also has a white spur at the shoulder, gray bill outlined with white and with a white ring near the black tip, and yellow eyes. The male in non-breeding plumage is browner on the flanks, but with a darker head, breast, and back. Its bill lacks the white outline, and has a black tip. The Female Ring-necked Duck looks similar to female Greater and Lesser Scaups. She is brown overall with lighter-gray cheeks. Like the scaups, she has a white crescent at the base of her bill, although it is less distinctive than that of either the Greater or Lesser Scaup. The Female Ring-necked Duck can be distinguished from the scaups by the thin, white eye-ring that trails back to her ear, and the peaked shape of her head, as well as by differing habitat. Juveniles look like females.

I'm very sorry to hear of Mr McDonald's passing. :'( My condolences to his family and friends. I am very thankful for all that he and his fantastic staff did for all the beautiful wildlife we have come to follow and love. I will especially miss Wilma and Fred, the Count and Tessa, all the beautiful wildlife families we have been privileged to have followed throughout the years. All due to Mr McDonald and his staff. Thank you, thank you to the amazing RRP's mods, chatters and staff. And thank you to all here who posted of EC's daily activities. Mr McDonald and Bob Anderson are flying high with the eagles.
I pray something will change and the cam and this thread can continue. If the cam can't, I pray this thread will remain. God Bless :-*

I just had another Eaglecrest moment, remembering everything I loved about it, the geese, the barn owls, the hawks, the herons, the egrets, the squirrels, and all the other creatures, the great cam operators and all the informative moderators. It was such a magical place for too short a time. A piece of me died when they turned off the cams for the last time. There will never be another thing quite like it in my life.
Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leaf's a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down today.
Nothing gold can stay.
