Title: Mn DNR Nongame wildlife, Peregrine Falcon, Bremer Bank Building, St.Paul, Mn.
Post by: MpMom on March 30, 2016, 12:50:33 PM
http://www.webcams.dnr.state.mn.us/falcon/

The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources' Nongame Wildlife Program is broadcasting a Web streaming video of peregrine falcons nesting on the top of the Bremer Bank Building in downtown St. Paul. With the help of the Town Square merchants as well as the Midwest Peregrine Society, The Nongame Program is able to provide this unique opportunity to watch peregrines raise their young in an urban setting.

In 1987, a nesting box was placed on the east side of the building and was first used by a pair of falcons in 1988. Several pairs of falcons have chosen this site as their home, producing 65 chicks through 2012. Last year was the 9th year that the pair "Jill" and "Sota" had occupied the box. Sota hatched in 1994 and had been nesting since 1998. Despite missing two toes on each foot (probably due to frostbite), and being 17 years old, Sota had been able to provide enough food for himself, all of his offspring and his mate during incubation and early brooding of chicks. Unfortunately, Sota has not been seen this season. Jill has returned and has a new mate and they have begun laying eggs. After about a 35-day incubation period, the chicks should hatch close to Memorial Day weekend.

Does anyone know when the cam will start. Just me waiting. :-\

From the DNR.

The peregrine cam in downtown St. Paul is new, has a new view and is now live and on line!  The pair is already incubating 4 eggs, the first of which was laid on April 4th.  Incubation is just under six weeks.  The new camera angle is just about eye- level to the birds and should prove to be close-up for bird observation and chick feeding/rearing.

The male at this location is the same male as last year, "Peter", a three year old and the female is "Arcadia", also three years old.    Jill, the long-time female occupant of this box, unfortunately died a few months ago at the Raptor Center of Minnesota.  Her death was likely a result of the two year old injury she had on her beak.

Just to clarify things, Jill the nesting female for many years actually was euthanized due to an old broken leg injury which could not be repaired.

Also, hatch should happen this thursday/friday.

I've just scheduled the banding for the 2 chicks for June 6th, 2 pm.  Be prepared for the giant hands arrival about 1:45 or so, and the chicks to be out of view for 15-20 minutes.

Sorry everyone, but I still haven't received an answer from the non-game staff at DNR on when the cam will be activated.

I know someone from the team will be stopping by today or tomorrow at the latest.  We have had a territorial battle between last year's female "Arcadia" fledge from St. Cloud with "Bobbie" fledge from Ford Parkway Bridge last week.  So far, Arcadia is still in residence, and is paired for the first time with a new male "Tom" 2015 fledge from Delta Airlines at MSP airport.  I'll try and get the photos uploaded by this weekend.  Sorry, but field work and paying job have kept me busy 24/7 this past week.

I stopped by the site this afternoon, and the scrape was empty.  Both adults showed up at the box and were actively copulating.  This is a new pair, but I would still expect the first egg to arrive this week.  We will be making another visit on Friday/Saturday.  I was told by DNR that the camera was live, but it is obviously not live to the public yet and may likely just "live" to the staff.

Yeah, I'm eagerly awaiting news that DNR will get the camera on line soon.  So far, we have no information as to when that might occur.  Josh will make another site visit on Friday to get a final egg count, and then we will have enough information as to hatch and possible banding date.

DNR Nongame Peregrine Cam is now live

The peregrine falcon cam in downtown St. Paul at Sentinel Properties is now live-streaming on our website. The pair of birds already have already laid four eggs!  The first two eggs were laid over the weekend of April 8-9, the third was laid on the 11th, and the fourth was laid on the 14th. Peregrine's eggs are about the size of a small chicken egg and are a rusty/reddish-brown color.

Tune in to watch the pair who have been identified as "Tom", a 2015 fledge from the MSP airport; and the female is "Arcadia" a 2013 fledge from the St. Cloud correctional facility.  Arcadia is the same female that nested at this box last year.

Both parents will incubate the eggs for about 33 days. While one parent is incubating, the other is usually hunting.   While hunting, the peregrine falcon "stoops" into a dive at its prey, grabbing it right out of the air. They are the fastest animal on the planet and have been clocked at over 230 miles an hour!  They eat mostly birds of a huge variety of species.

A new camera at a new viewpoint was installed in 2015.  It is clearer and closer than ever before and soon it will be fun to watch them feeding their hungry little fuzz-balls!

The camera is funded by donations to The Nongame Wildlife Fund on Minnesota state tax forms.  You may also make a donation on-line, anytime of year on our donation page.  Thank you to our donors, our MNiT team and to Sentinel Property Management for making this amazing view into the private lives of these fascinating birds possible!

We have had a pair on territory all winter long, and they continue to be Arcadia and Bobbie.  Egg laying should happen ~April 5th or so.

So I did some reading back in this thread.  "Arcadia's Dad is Lewis, born in 2003 at the Fargo nest, banded black/green 76/P. Lewis's Dad was the legendary Dakota Ace, banded black/red *H/D. His Mom was Frieda, born at the Alma, Wisconsin nest in 2001, banded black/green 24/A."  I didn't know she was out of Dakota Ace.  I used to watch him at Fargo when they had the cam!!

Speaking of Dakota Ace, here is a good history of the peregrines at Fargo and Dakota Ace. https://dakota.audubon.org/fargo-falcons-bank-west

Jackie, do you know what if anything has happened to the 2nd chick?
I'm sure I'm just worrying for no reason, but sure would like to know.

Info that SGB got was Trichomonas got the baby.  Surviving one seems to be doing fine.

No I don't.  I was notified late the day it died, but had already gone north to band chicks.  I was in contact with the DNR, and she notified me that the chick appeared to be having seizures, but that once I had someone retrieve the carcass, that it could be disposed of without a necropsy.

Who are the initials {Info that SGB got was Trichomonas got the baby.  Surviving one seems to be doing fine.} that mention that they heard the bird had trich?  To my knowledge, the bird was never examined by a pathologist/vet.

As at the Multifoods site, we also have confirmed occupancy by a new tiercel.  This year's male is TommyHawk b/g H/33, a 13 year old male that had previously been found on territory at Cargill plant, Savage, MN.  He is paired with Arcadia b/r B/05, a nine year old female who has nested here since 2016.  The camera is also live and can be followed at https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/features/webcams/falconcam/index.html

First egg was laid last night, confirmed early this morning.  The 2022 season is in full gear and looks very promising.
