Must see! Must read! Must click! Don't miss the glorious photos (thank you, Neil?) or Neil Rettig's account of how he became involved in helping to save the National Bird of the Philippines, the majestic Philippine eagle.
ABS-CBN Corporation is a huge Philippine media conglomerate and this appears to be a major public relations push to publicize the Philippine eagle's fight for survival.

WE HAVE WORK TO DO, PEEPS!!! From RRP's FB page:
Raptor Resource Project
59 mins ?
Earlier this month a released Philippine Eagle named #Pamana was shot and killed. Our friends at the Philippine Eagle Foundation were devastated. Adding to their sorrow, their government is considering stopping Philippine Eagle releases. It is our position that the Philippine Eagle can't be recovered without releases, education, protective laws, and strict enforcement. Dennis Salvador, the director of the Philippine Eagle Foundation, will be testifying in front of the Philippine congress on Tuesday, September 1st, in support of continuing releases.
I've linked to our letter supporting the Philippine Eagle Foundation and future releases. http://www.raptorresource.org/PEF.pdf. We are asking you to support Philippine Eagle releases as well. Please consider posting your positive support on their facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/phileaglefdn or Tweet to @PhilEagleFdn. Let our friends in the Philippines know you care. They are doing amazing work, and they had Bob's support as well.

I don't know if this area is in the Philippine eagles' range, but it sounds similar to what they're up against.

This research involves China's pandas and bamboo forests, but it would seem to offer a route for other conservation efforts to travel.

This handout photo taken on February 4, 2016 and released by the Philippine Eagle Foundation on February 8, 2016 shows a newly hatched, rare monkey-eating eagle at the Philippine Eagle Foundation's conservation breeding programme in Davao in the southern Philippines. The success of captive breeding of rare monkey-eating eagles in the southern Philippines has left the breeding facility scrambling for space, officials said February 8. Another eaglet was hatched last week, the second in barely three months, helping the giant bird's fight against extinction. PHOTO: AFP

T40, thank you for both of your recent posts here.
That's such a sad story about the shooting of Matatag. Hope there is a successful recovery.
Pangarap, the 17-year old PE in your posted photo, is so gorgeous. I hope none of her potential future wild-release offspring are never centered in a gun sight. They will face enough other challenges to survive in the wild without being shot.
Maybe they should start fitting the PEs there with bullet-proof vests? Still seems to be a population of people there who aren't breaking the PE-shooting habit yet. Such a long way to go on so many fronts to try to save this incredible species of raptor. At least PEF and their partners are trying to make it happen, and I so hope they make progress in that regard and eventually succeed.

I posted this in the "From the Heart" section, but it bears being here as well...
Bob used to quote this regarding endangered birds:
The beauty and genius of a work of art may be reconceived, though its first
material expression be destroyed; a vanished harmony may yet
again inspire the composer; but when the last individual of a
race of living beings breathes no more, another heaven and
another earth must pass before such a one can be again.
We saved the Bald Eagle. We saved the Peregrine Falcon.
Conservation issues in the Philippines seem even more
complicated than they are here. The PEF is taking a multi-
faceted approach to help people who are living in extreme
poverty understand why leaving trees and habitat is more
important than taking them down.
Connecting people to wildlife was something Bob believed in
deeply, and we all believe in it too! So if you can, please donate-if you cannot, how about a kind gesture in Bob or RRP's name? Even a smile to a stranger can make someone's day better!
Thanks for your time
:)Izzy

Thanks, T40. Those measurements/comparisons are interesting. I confess, from the illustration, I am unable to determine the difference between the "Bill Culmen" and "Bill Gape" - they look to me like the dotted lines are pointing to the same spots in that drawing for those two measurements. Maybe I just need a larger view of that drawing to see what is different about those two.

baz - The gape is measured from commissural point to commissural point (i.e., the edges of the mouth). It's the widest part of a fully open mouth.
The culmen is measured from the tip of the beak to the bottom of the cere, which is what they're referring to as "Bill Height," for some reason. It should be called "culmen length," which is a chord measurement used for sexing eagles. (see attachment)
What they're calling the culmen is a measurement I couldn't find anywhere but it seems to measure from the tip of the beak to the commissure.

Thanks, T40, but I understand the Bill Height (culmen length as you referred to it today) measurement. The illustration you posted yesterday includes another different measurement, called the Bill Culmen - it is different from the Bill Height (aka culmen length), and in the illustration from yesterday, it appears to point to the same spots on the Harpy that the Bill Gape points to (I know what the Bill Gape is measuring). That's what my post was about... ;)

baz - I know. Sorry if that wasn't clear. I searched for their so-called bill culmen measurement and couldn't find it anywhere. Don't know what it's used for or how long it's been in use or not in use. Nothing. All I could do was speculate as to what it looked like the bill culmen measurement included, because I disagreed with what you see in their drawing, confusing as some of it is.
I tried to differentiate the gape from the bill culmen. The gape is from corner-to-corner of the mouth, with the bill not even considered.
-
LOL T40... thanks for trying... if only I could actually say it out loud ;) :D ... LOL... In the illustration you posted yesterday, at the top are the words "Bill Culmen" - I was thinking the dotted lines the "Bill Culmen" label is referring to were from the mouth's corner-to-corner - same as in the "Bill Gape" dotted line - But there are different measurements for both the "Bill Gape" and the "Bill Culmen" listed below that illustration - in addition to, and separately from, the "Bill Height" (aka culmen length) - so I know they are all three separate measurements, as listed directly below yesterday's illustration. But now, as I look longer at the dotted lines there for "Bill Culmen," I am wondering if it is trying to point to the distance between the ridge of the beak at its outermost point from the face to the corner of the mouth... yes, I think now that is what it is trying to indicate in that illustration for the "Bill Culmen." Ha ha... Clear as mud, right? ;) :D

From RRP's FB page on 9/12/16
Raptor Resource Project shared Neil Rettig Productions's post.
An extremely cool share from Neil Rettig Productions. Note how the Philippine Eagle soars fairly flat, with just the tips of its wings curled up and its wing slots spread wide. The wide wing slots reduce the difference in pressure between the top and bottom of the wing to alleviate drag.
The Philippine Eagle's tail remains in a narrow line behind until it begins to flap, at which point it appears to tilt just a little bit, especially on the first two strokes. It takes a lot of lift to keep a bird this big up in the air!
Knowing a bird's shape and flight behavior can be very helpful in identifying it at a distance. A peregrine falcon's dynamic flying sickle, a turkey vulture's tilty-winged 'V', an osprey's 'M', and the flat lines of a soaring eagle are quite distinctive from one another and can be useful in preliminary ID.
Neil Rettig Productions - September 9 at 7:59pm
This footage Neil shot on our expedition in the Philippines is being used to illustrate wingbeat trajectory and shape in a new edition of the Handbook of Bird Biology published by Cornell. The media team at Cornell Lab of Ornithology is working hard editing the documentary on the Philippine Eagle that will show much more of these amazing birds, their plight, and the people working hard to save them and their habitat.
Slow Motion Philippine Eagle Flight - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NiIgrPNFFxk
Published on Jul 13, 2016
"To understand the unique flight styles of different bird species, scientists use a technique called wing tracing. It involves tracing the trajectory of a point on their wing during a series of wingbeats. The pattern of a bird's wingbeat depends on how far a bird can move its wing in any given direction, which is determined by the length and shape of the wing. Soaring birds such as this Philippine Eagle, for example, show an elliptical shaped wingtip path when viewed from the side.
This video accompanies Chapter 5, Avian Flight, Handbook of Bird Biology 3rd Edition from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Wiley Publishing."

There is a lot going on in that very political opinion piece which is not at all about birds.

I agree, baz. I generally put "Opinion" or "Editorial" in front of articles like this when I post, but I couldn't find any proof in the article that it was an opinion. There's a language barrier, for sure, and I think it's a local paper, but I concluded the story was probably presented as journalism/reporting rather than as a commentary. I hope it's not a "movement," because the Philippine eagle needs all the protection and publicity it can get.

T40, yes, there was a translation issue apparent with that article, but there was no mistaking what it intended to convey. I think people who have appropriate critical thinking skills can easily see that it is an opinion piece. I found it to be a negative piece in terms of support for the Philippine Eagle, and not thinly veiled. If the writer's intent was only to make jabs at the ruling group and had no intent to discourage support for protecting the Philippine Eagle, then the writer needs to publish an explanation of that. Philippine eagle has guardians in Leyte
Manila Bulletin14 Feb 2017By RESTITUTO A. CAYUBIT
BARANGAY MAHAGNAO, Burauen, Leyte ? The Mamanwa tribe living in barangay Kagbana, this town, is helping protect the national bird.
Bernal Managbanag, the chief of the tribe, interviewed during the second Mahagnao outdoor festival held here recently, confirmed the presence of the Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyii) in his barangay, saying that the big bird ?can carry a wild piglet weighing 10 to 15 kilos.?
Managbanag said they observed that the eagle also eats snakes, monkeys, weasel and other animals.
The members of the Mamanwa participated in the festival that promoted environmental conservation, protection and ecotourism of the Mahagnao Volcano Natural Park, here.
Managbanag said they recognize the bird as the Philippine eagle when personnel from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, regional office (DENR), based in Tacloban City, this province, introduced to them the bird before Super Typhoon Yolanda hit in 2013.
Managbanag said they have been observing the presence of the bird in their area many years ago and there were people hunting the bird for food.
Managbanag said his tribe is protecting the bird on the request of the DENR.
DENR Regional Director Leonardo Sibbaluca told reporters that based on their initial assessment the Philippine eagle roams the forests in the Anonang-Lobi mountain ranges on the boundaries of the towns of BurauenJaro-Albuera and Ormoc City.
Sibbaluca said his men in the field are conducting further studies on how far the Philippine eagle ranges in the island of Leyte.
Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico L. Petilla said that when the confirmation about the existence of the Philippine eagle in his province reached him sometime in 2014, his office spread information for the protection of the bird and should not be harmed or shot as the bird is protected by law.
Petilla and Sibbaluca are appealing for support from the public, local government units, private organizations, stakeholders and other concerned government agencies to help preserve the Philippine Eagle.

Adopt-a-species program bolsters protection of the Philippine Eagle
Manila Bulletin16 Feb 2017Philippine Eagle
The Philippine Eagle, one of the world?s rarest forest raptors, is facing extinction. Protecting the endangered bird that is endemic to the country is of primary importance, especially for the communities who need to safeguard its survival, protect the biodiversity it represents, and promote the sustainable use of forest resources.
As part of its nation-building efforts, CEMEX Philippines Foundation ? the social arm of CEMEX Philippines ? is now on the second year of its partnership with the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) with the goal of espousing the conservation of the Philippine Eagle and its habitats.
PEF is at the forefront of taking care of the critically endangered species known to be geographically restricted to Mindanao but there were also sightings recorded in some parts of Luzon, Samar, and Leyte. The Philippine Eagle Foundation Center, an 8.4-hectare area located at Malagos in Davao City, is currently home to 36 Philippine Eagles; half of them are captive-bred.
CEMEX Philippines Foundation and PEF?s three-year partnership includes the implementation of educational awareness and outreach activities in seven eagle habitats, as well as the or- ganization of at least 100 indigenous forest guards who will care for the eagles and where they live.
Promoting the importance of the Philippine Eagle and its protection is part of the Adopt-a-Species Program of CEMEX Philippines Foundation ? an initiative that enables communities to foster sustainable conservation efforts for endangered species and the environment.
?The adopt-a-species law allows companies like us to put resources in various species conservation projects. And because of that, we were able to reach out to many areas in the Philippines. Some of our other adopted species were the "butanding" (whale shark), Tarsier, and Negros Bleeding Heart,? shared Paul Arcenas, CEMEX vice president for investor relations and integrated communications.
For the Philippine Eagle sites, the company further helps the communities by supporting Philippine Eagle surveys in three suspected eagle territories, delineate nesting sites, and initiate home range and habitat use on adult birds.
Additionally, the partnership will facilitate livelihood support to communities of the Sinabadan Indigenous Peoples? Organization. Empowering the Sibulan IPO is part of PEF and CEMEX?s recognition of the community as the champions in saving the Philippine Eagle.
?Again, we?re proud to engage with our partners in Sibulan. PEF has been working with them for more than 10 years now,? said PEF executive director Dennis Salvador.
?We are looking forward to more interactions with PEF and the Sibulan IPO. We hope to make this partnership sustainable to be able to help more communities in protecting the Philippine Eagle,? added Arcenas who also serves as board member of the CEMEX Philippines Foundation. (Charmaine Tadalan)

We've had some questions about the Philippine Eagle Project. While the live cam is on hold for now, the movie "Bird of Prey" is a finalist at the Jackson Hole Wildlife Film Festival, where it will be showing this week. To learn more about the movie, follow this link: http://birdofpreymovie.com/. To see the preview on vimeo, click here: https://vimeo.com/231907209.
If you'd like to learn more about the Philippine Eagle and its plight, read "In the Aerie of the Philippine Eagle" at https://www.allaboutbirds.org/in-the-aerie-of-the-philippi?/. It tells a gripping story, provides a lot of background information, and has absolutely breathtaking Philippine Eagle videos and photographs by Neil Rettig and Kike Arnal.
The live cam may be on hold, but efforts to help the Philippine Eagle are moving forward!

The World's Largest Eagle - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yG2u57WQsf8
In south east Asia a monkey eating eagle rules the skies. While their size is impressive their numbers are not. On this episode we'll take a look at the world's largest eagle.
The Philippine Eagle, being the world's largest, is not only iconic for it's size but it's look.
Sporting a full head of hair, white belly and dark brown wings, this is the last eagle you want to have circling you when you're walking your dog.
These massive eagles have a 6.5 foot or 2 meter wingspan and stand 3 feet or 1 meter tall. They weigh in at 16.5 pounds or 7.5 kgs but I should note these numbers are for the females who are larger than the males. Despite their extraordinary size, the Philippine Eagle has evolved to be able to fly out of dense jungle almost vertically with their broad wings and squared off tail.
These birds of prey eat small animals most commonly a diet consisting of flying lemurs, snakes, palm civets, macaque monkeys, lizards, bats and cloud rats. With a 7 inch spread of talons, this eagle once locked onto a target doesn't give it much hope of surviving. The Philippine Eagle can carry prey 4x it's own body weight. There's no wonder how this eagle acquired the nickname as the monkey eating eagle. Believe it or not this eagle will occasionally attack pigs, young goats and dogs as well.
This majestic species of eagle is critically endangered with there believed to be less than 200 left in the wild. The eagle's low reproduction rate of laying just 1 or 2 eggs a year isn't helping the problem. They require tall trees that tower over the jungle canopy to reproduce which are often the first target of forestry loggers in the Philippines.
The initial decline of the Philippine eagle happened after World War I when firearms became common. This bird was a high in demand prized bird to be put on display.
Being at the top of the food chain isn't always the safest as much higher doses of toxins, such as pesticides build up in the body. This eagle along with the Bald Eagle and Peregrine falcon have had their numbers devastated by these environmental pollutants.
Once flourishing on most Philippine islands, the Philippine Eagle has been extirpated from many islands. This removal of the bird changes the ecosystem with one of the top predators missing, the eagle only survives on a few islands today.
A breeding program in Davao City currently houses 36 Philippine Eagles, 18 of which were bred in captivity. Over the 23 years Philippines Eagles have been bred only an additional 26 eagles have come from breeders efforts. 15 of the eagles have been released back into the wild with a few found and brought back to the facility injured, some found dead and only 1 known to be surviving on it's own. The eagles are now be loaned out for other countries to breed them just as backup in case natural disaster or disease goes through the Philippines.

This is absolutely a must-see. The Philippine Eagle is the world's largest and rarest eagle, found only in the Philippines. Fewer than 800 individuals remain today, and the future of these iconic raptors -- and of an untold number of other species -- is tied to the fate of the Philippines' last fragments of old-growth forest.
"Bird of Prey" follows Neil's return to the Philippines as he embarks on a grueling expedition alongside a small but devoted group determined to protect the eagle. Together, they answer the question: What will it take to save a species from extinction?
For more information about the movie, visit the website http://birdofpreymovie.com/.

Great news from the Philippine Eagle Foundation (Official) and Neil Rettig Productions!
Philippine Eagle Foundation (Official)
November 28 at 6:32 AM
Hatched and raised within the forests of Bukidnon, this eaglet was born to first time eagle parents. The eagle mom was a released eagle rescued and rehabilitated by the PEF in 2008. Ten years after it was released back to the forest, the eagle mom found her lifelong mate. This year, the pair finally welcomed this eaglet, their first offspring.
This is a testament that the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured eagles back into the wild can work.
Watch out as we feature the other 5 eaglets that were hatched this year in Mindanao!

From our friends at PEF!
Philippine Eagle Foundation (Official)

This is Pag-asa and his keeper Manong Eddie. These two have been together for so long, in fact, ever since Pag-asa was hatched in 1992! He's seen Pag-asa in every stage of his life, from a struggling chick to an adult producing his first eaglet. Pag-asa's first and only offspring to date is also a product of Cooperative Artificial Insemination much like himself.
CAI is a long and tricky process. Manong Eddie had to try many times before Pag-asa could produce enough semen for insemination. Aside from Manong Eddie constantly bonding with Pag-asa in his enclosure and offering him nesting materials to stimulate him to copulate, he also needed to collect semen at the right time when the female eagle under his care is ready for insemination.
Breeding Philippine Eagles in captivity is a long and difficult journey but is an important part in conserving the species. Pag-asa's existence is a constant reminder that it CAN and should be done in order to give this rare and majestic species a fighting chance for survival.
Donate to www.philippineeaglefoundation.org/saving-eagles-campaign to support our captive breeding efforts!

“#TransferBreedingEaglesNow”
Why do we need to relocate our breeding Philippine eagle pairs from the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos to the Eden Tourism Reservation Area in Barangay Eden, Davao City?
https://www.philippineeaglefoundation.org/transfer-breeding-eagles-now
Over the past 35 years, the landscape around the PEC has changed so much that the threats to the captive breeding Philippine eagles are now at our doorstep.
Commercial and game farms have mushroomed in the area surrounding the PEC. Along with this, human activities increased. Avian flu continues to be one of the salient threats and such farms are breeding grounds for these diseases. Activities in adjacent farm lots such as hauling, land clearing, or the sound of chainsaws cause distress to the Philippine eagles. With all these changes, the woodland buffer that once served as a shield from such threats, has thinned out.
With the breeding season here, our Philippine eagles, especially the natural pairs, are vulnerable to disturbances. The noise from the activities in the adjacent farm lot divert their attention from breeding to fixating on the source of the disturbance instead. If this continues, we essentially lose potential hatchlings that could be released into the wild.
Hiyas and Magiting are in their 4th year but have yet to produce a fertile egg. Maslog and Mayumi are being paired. However promising the turn out may be, their breeding behaviors are susceptible to interruptions. While Ariela and MVP Matatag were able to produce a chick last year, we need to improve on successfully rearing their young to be fit for release in the forest. But the PEC is no longer viable for this.
We are currently working with the Davao City Government to move our breeding eagles to a public owned land in Brgy Eden, Toril. Based on a feasibility study we conducted on the area, it is viable for a breeding facility with an ideal altitude and forest cover which are on a par with the eagle’s natural habitat. However, the Usufruct Agreement with the City Government allowing us to use 13.46 ha of the 105-ha property, has yet to be released despite our plea for the emergency transfer of the eagles.
Equally important to securing the location, is generating the resources needed to get the work done. Please pitch in to this endeavor and together, let’s make this happen now. Supporting this campaign will lead to producing Philippine eagles that we can release in the forest in the future.
Please indicate that your donation is for this campaign by putting “#TransferBreedingEaglesNow” on the transaction notes.
Thank you,
The Philippine Eagle Foundation

It is considered to be one of the largest and most powerful among forest raptors. They are also listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) with an estimated number of only 400 pairs left in the wild.
PHILIPPINE EAGLES IN THE WILD
Philippine eagles are solitary and territorial creatures.
They take 5-7 years to sexually mature.
The Philippine eagle pair needs about 4000-11000 hectares of forest land to thrive in the wild, depending on the number of prey items in the area.
It only lays a single egg every two years. They wait for their offspring to make it on their own (usually within two years) before producing another offspring.
They typically nest on large dipterocarp trees like the native species Lauan.
They can live up to 40+ years in captivity but probably much less in the wild
The egg is incubated alternately by both eagle parents for about 58 – 60 days, with the male eagle doing most of the hunting during the first 40 days of the eaglet’s life while the female stays with the young.
