I know, I know. Not terribly creative.
The Ustream Mod Board is a work in progress and will morph and change over time. I'm not sure what I'll be doing here, but I LOVE having the space. "It's bigger on the inside." Gratuitous Doctor Who reference.
-
As you might or might not know, I'm graphically challenged. A drawing teacher once told me I'd make a great art historian.
I thought you might enjoy this.
-
How do they do that? lol
-
It would be interesting to see the bridle and bit that fit on this rare species. :D
-
TW - good to see you here! This Forum has become quite the place to hang out - all kinds of things going on. Pull up a computer and enjoy your space.
-
glog, a very good photo manipulation program with a computer savvy graphic artist.
Faith, a bigger question is who would put the bridle on the thing?
Bob, thanks for the welcome. I've been around a long time but don't post much.
-
ok, Thinking Woman. You've got the floor. What are you thinking? lol
-
Glog, TW is thinking "now how am I going to get the bridle in THAT mouth"?
-
LOL, Faith! :D That could be tricky. Wonder if they sell blinders for sharks?
-
Not sure that would help, Glog. :D
-
I'm not bridling that thing! That's why I was asking the question who would.
-
ok, TW. I got to thinking about your pic of the shark horse. And I found some pretty interesting stuff. Check out this link and read about the largest bird that ever lived and the the Giant Eagle that lived in New Zealand (bottom of page).

-
Glog, very interesting link!
TW, but I thought you would bridle it. I would help by standing nearby (well, maybe not so near) with a box of bandaids and a roll of duct tape. ;)
-
I'm not bridling that thing! That's why I was asking the question who would.
If the bridle includes a massive muzzle and a long pole, I will help.
-
That was MY thought too...I will NOT be offering to help put the bit in THAT ponies' mouth!!! lol
-
Hi, TW! Have you heard of any plans to put a camera on the new nest?
-
Hi, TW! Have you heard of any plans to put a camera on the new nest?
I know they are planning on having a camera up and running by the time next season begins so that we can watch whichever nest they choose. ( PLEASE Mom and Dad don't pick a THIRD location !!!) I have no idea where they are in the process, I am sure RRP will keep us updated on it!!!! :-)
-
Hi, TW! Have you heard of any plans to put a camera on the new nest?
The cams have been installed in Yonder Nest tree. However, it will take a while for the rest of the necessary system to be ready for the start of next season.
-
Has everyone been watching Earthflight on PBS' Nature series? Here's the link so you can watch it online in case you missed it. http://video.pbs.org/video/2365076008/ (http://video.pbs.org/video/2365076008/)
On the North America credits, I noticed Neil Rettig's name. Always watch the credits! You never know what or who you'll see.
-
Thanks TW!
-
Thank you TW! It's good to know there are now cams installed in Yonder Nest!

TW - thanks so much for this link. My PBS station seems to have vanished so have missed the first two segments of Earthflight.
-
Reminder EARTHFLIGHT continues on Nature. This week is South America; just enough pan flute to make it sound authentic, but not enough to make you want to barf. In case you missed it, here's the link. http://video.pbs.org/video/2365086098/ (http://video.pbs.org/video/2365086098/)

HAHAHA!!! :D TW!!!! ok...thanks for the weblink. I'll watch tonight. ;)

"Winged Planet" which aired last year shows 2 hours of the Earthflight series. Neil and his group were nominated for an Emmy for their part. However, the Emmy's for that will not be awarded until Oct. 1st. Go Neil!
-
GG, I wondered the same thing about filming the swallows. Maybe their next series should be "How we filmed the Earthflight Series". ;) And you're right, the program has been amazing!
-
Who knew condors had the best table manners of birdom even though they dine on road kill? :D
I think I remember reading about one episode being devoted to how they filmed Earthflight, but I'm not sure. Neil Rettig raised the flock of geese he filmed; at one point perhaps during promos for the series, the flock got lost in NYC. Luckily at least one had a GPS chip, and the flock was found in a small NYC park. What? They couldn't find Central Park where they could have had multiple big lakes and grasslands and little kids with food they could nip?
I had to leave home early one day this past week. The neighbourhood hawk was up and calling already. Thanks to movies that substitute hawk vocalizations for eagle sounds, I had to do some unwelcome mental gymnastics to think eagle (which excited me no end) and then translate to it's the hawk. It was too bloody early for that.
-
Thanks for the article, Finn. That reminded me of this video about Neil, his wife, and his jealous Harpy Eagle.

OK, this one is a feeling. I'll wait while you get over the shock that I have feelings.
Earthflight gave me goosebumps this week. The behind the scenes episode made my ears leak as well.
Here's the link so you can have it happen as well. http://video.pbs.org/video/2365095227/ (http://video.pbs.org/video/2365095227/)

I totally agree TW. I have loved all the episodes, but last night's was my favorite.

"Leaking Ears"
Sounds like a name for a not-so-good rock band.
Just saying......... ;D
-
What are you doing reading this when RRP's FB page has just exploded with memories to ramp up for the cams coming back on soon.

Don't miss the party.
-
TW, ooooops! You caught me! lol
-
Dobe lol! Caught in the act. :D
-
I hope you all noticed I took the high road on Bob and Pagent's jabs. But I will get you, my pretties! (Quote in honour of The Wizard of Oz restored, limited release)
Dobe, a good time was had by all!
Anybody in their youth or recently watched the submarine races and all that implies?
-
TW, Oh my gosh! I had forgotten all about "submarine races"! lol
I commend you on taking the high road, however I think Bob and Pagent better remember the saying, "pay back is a *****! ;D
-
and is best served cold.
-
Remind me never to open your freezer! lol
-
Just in case you thought my brain had stopped working.
Thank you for your enthusiastic response to flash chats. The only problem is waiting for one to break out.
You spoke, and we heard you. We will be opening chat from 2 PM to 6 PM Central Time (Nest Time) each Sunday. Bring your observations from the week in case mom and dad are out for a Sunday fly and don't make it to chat.
Flash chats will continue throughout the week whenever two mods are available and something interesting is happening. So far we've watched camera tinkering, down feathers blowing, nestorations, and mom and dad just chilling in the nest (mom seemed to be practicing her incubation technique).
Sunday Fireside Chat will begin on this Sunday, November 10, 2013, at 2 PM.
-
Thinking Woman stopped thinking? :o I don't think so. ;D
And looking forward to Chat on Sundays. Thank you!! :-*

As I was writing some emails this morning, I got stumped. Who knew that house cleaning could turn your mind to mush? I get my most brilliant insights when cleaning the barn!
Anyway, in solving my email dilemma, I found this site. I like it. http://www.grammarly.com/handbook/ (http://www.grammarly.com/handbook/)

If you've had a tough day, this should help.
-
LOL, TW! Did you take that picture of me Thanksgiving evening? I was that tired, but I was thankful.
-
Precious, TW! Is that what you call, "Dog-tired"? :D
-
There are days you are just weary to your bones.
-
Since it seems the entire US has had a cold snap this past week, the thought came to mind. Why does my nose run when it's cold?
According to a NPR interview here http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=99844567 (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=99844567) it's because of biology and physics. When we breathe in, our noses condition the air so our lungs don't get shocked by too cold and/or too dry air. Since cold air is often dry air, our noses produce moisture (sometimes too much) to help those precious petals, our lungs, get what they need. I suppose I ought to be grateful as lungs keep me alive.
On the other hand, when we exhale, the water molecules hit the cold air and condense.
We get runny noses going and coming. I have found surgically taping a Kleenex to my upper lip works quite well.
-
LOL, TW, I want a photo of you with the Kleenex surgically taped to your upper lip! Seriously, I'm glad you researched that topic. I have often wondered the same thing and now I know!
-
Gosh, thanks TW. Funny how we all experience things so many times yet never really thought about HOW it happens. :)
-
Faith, there is a right way and wrong way to do the Kleenex on your upper lip. First you need to know how wide your upper lip in order to be able to fold the Kleenex appropriately. In the beginning add 1 inch to the width; on subsequent applications, you can reduce this. The really hard part, but one you learn quickly is apply the tape vertically on either side of the Kleenex. Horizontal application of tape only causes runoff.
nnaigroeg, fluffies can be minimized by checking the thread count on the Kleenex. Under no circumstances should you substitute paper towels. They only cause sneezing fits from the fluffies they put out.
-
Thanks TW! I have this copied and added to my first aid kit! :D
-
I think a tutorial video would help. :D

I'm willing to acknowledge it's Christmas. Here's some music to get you in the mood.

An ear wig for your entertainment. I dare you not to sing it for 15 minutes straight.

As soon as I hear the next one, I declare all preparations over and hit the egg nog.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgIwLeASnkw (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgIwLeASnkw)
I've been known to like cheesy music.
-
I'm in the mood now! Bring on Christmas!
-
Luther College in Decorah does a huge Christmas concert. This year it was shown on PBS.
Here's the link to watch it online. http://video.pbs.org/video/2317909502/ (http://video.pbs.org/video/2317909502/) Be prepared to sing along on some of the songs. Since you are at home, you don't have to worry about being on key!
-
Oh TW, Thank you so much!!! :) I am going to listen to it entirely like right now!! I love this kind of music.
-
It's being aired on my local PBS station on Dec. 23. I plan to watch it!
-
They always give such a nice concert!
-
I just read they've finished a draft of the new Star Wars script. So to honour the Disney incarnation before they have a chance to mess it up and disappoint me like Episode 1-3 did, I offer you a chance to find out which Star Wars character you are.

Yesterday I was Queen Amidala. Today I'm Boba Fett. Go figure.
-
I am Yoda? Well, I guess we do look a little alike. :D
-
Too funny, Faith. :D
Uh-oh. Watch out TW. I am....Obi-Wan Kenobi. lol ;D
-
Lol, GG! Yoda and Yoda-1? :D
-
OMG! ROFL!! :D
-
;)
-
OK, so I didn't do much thinking that I wanted to share last year. :o
Thanks to Pagent, I have something to pass on to you.
As most of you know, I have a very soft spot in my heart for Australia. This is their brush fire season. This year it's Victoria that's doing it tough. Koalas are especially hard hit by fires. Once they recognize the danger, they are so slow moving many die. The "lucky" ones get out with badly burned feet. The koala rehabbers put out a plea each year for mittens to keep the bandages clean and burn ointment on their paws. http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-01-08/paw-protectors-needed-for-koalas-injured-in-sa-victorian-fires/6007038 (http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-01-08/paw-protectors-needed-for-koalas-injured-in-sa-victorian-fires/6007038) Not many of us live near Plympton, dropping off mittens isn't an option.
Since not many of us outside Australia keep koalas as pets (let's face it. Eucalyptus trees are hard to grow in most places in the US), this pattern http://www.ifaw.org/sites/default/files/default/KOALA-MITTENS-PATTERN-A4.pdf (http://www.ifaw.org/sites/default/files/default/KOALA-MITTENS-PATTERN-A4.pdf) might work for dogs and cats with injured paws. Your local Animal Shelter might like some. Check with them first; they may do the baby socks and Vetwrap covering.
Let me translate some of the verbiage.
A4 sized paper -- 8.3 inches x 11.7 inches, close to the US 8.5x11 standard sized sheet.
150mm=5.9 inches
125mm=4.9 inches
Next up! Patterns for joey pouches! Care and feeding of drop bears!
-
What a nice idea, TW, stemming from the poor demise of Koalas in Austrlia fires. I'm sure Veterinarian hospitals across the U.S. would love to have dog & cat mittens too. Here's hoping Australia gets a good response for theirs.
-
I saw a piece on Australia's brush fires in the news. How very sad. Those koalas do need mittens and care.
-
I saw that on the NBC national news last night, TW. So sad for all in the way of those awful fires. They showed a video of one of the koalas rescued from that fire area in Victoria. They were treating the burns on its paws. The koalas cling to branches in trees to get up off the ground. That piece talked about those knitted mittens and the info on the special pattern needed for them. Thanks for posting!
-
This picture is probably from Dutch Harbor, AK, but there was no attribution.
Note the different ages hanging out together.
-
LOL. Love that picture, TW! And I'm glad I don't have to swab that deck! :D
-
Lest we forget.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
