Thanks for setting up the forum to correspond to the Goose cam! Much better to follow the geese separately from the eagles.
Mother Goose has laid a second egg, about 9:15 this morning. She came to the nest shortly before 9:00, softly grumbling about the snow (my guess) and settled in. Just a little wiggle and there was the second egg.
-
Ok great, I found the goose thread. Does anyone know if there is a thread for the Missouri Turkey Vultures? I can get the cam, but haven't found anything on the forum yet???

Nora, I only see the "Turkey Vultures, Marshall, Missouri" thread started in 2021 which is down on the second page of "Other Raptor Cams". https://raptorresource.org/raptorresource/forum/index.php?topic=2728.0

The turkey vultures in Marshall MO do indeed have a forum, mentioned above. Don't think the site is active yet. You can check the archive to see when we started posting last spring. Two chicks fledged last summer.

Back to the geese. Rewind to about 1:00 this afternoon to watch MG (mother goose) cover the eggs before she leaves the nest. As RRP said, the male goose does not participate in incubation, so when MG needs to eat, etc. she leaves the eggs alone. By covering them, she protects them somewhat from predators.
-
Early morning, Mother Goose came to the nest for a short visit. She sat for a while but didn't uncover the eggs.
-
This is so cool having a Decorah Goose Cam! Thanks for setting it up!
-
Yes, this is great to have a dedicated goose cam.
This morning about 7:00, Mother Goose rolled her two eggs, turned around and wiggle wiggle push, she laid the third egg! The rewind shows the whole procedure. She's still on the nest at noon, resting up.
-
Just checking in on N2B. Mother Goose has been away for the afternoon. She sure can hide those 3 eggs! And what happened to all that lovely long grass that was all over the nest just a short while ago? Apparently these geese like short round sticks for their nest.
-
Sunday, looks like Mother Goose (MG) was away from the nest at night. She arrived with loud honking at 7:00 AM, and settled right down without uncovering the eggs. She added more sticks over the eggs before leaving for a short time about 9:00. Several times, she rubbed at her feathers as if to loosen some down, and by mid-day had some fluffy feathers to push around. [No pic of that.] Late this afternoon, she had all 3 eggs uncovered and rolled them around.

Phyl, great pic of the 4th egg for the geese! Last year she produced 6 eggs.
She has also plucked her breast feathers to cover the eggs. About 9:00 this morning, she honked loudly and MrGoose came to the nest to help guard. Their honking would certainly scare me away! :o

STLbf thanks for the egg count confirmation last year. I had thought she laid '6'.
Have a nice Wednesday everyone!
-
Maybe 4 is enough for this year. MG seems to be incubating. She was on the nest most of the night, left for a short while about 5:00 AM, and showed the eggs just before covering them completely. Lots of feathers now. I remember last year thinking that she was going to be a bald goose by the time the eggs hatched. Of course, she wasn't. :)
-
Here's the official 2023 RRP nest record for Mother Goose as of today - 03/29/2023.
It shows last year also.
-
BL, the numbers for goose eggs in 2022 are slightly incomplete. From my pic records:
They laid 6 eggs.
One egg never hatched and was still on the nest on May 10, 2022. The next day or so it was gone, likely from a raccoon.
The five goslings jumped from the nest on April 28, 2022. I can check if it took more than one day.
One of them died in the jump.
-
STL the 2022 Goose records look correct to me. ;)
It shows that 6 eggs were laid at N2B.
That 5 goslings hatched.
One gosling didn't survive the jump. :(
Four survived and rejoined their parents. ;D

03/31/2023
As of a few hours ago Mother Goose was incubating 6 eggs.
They're kind of hard to see with all of moms comfy down bedding .. :)
-
BL, those numbered labels are very helpful to ID eggs amongst all the feathers.
Couple more pics at about the same time this morning.
-
MG rolled the eggs about 11:15 this morning. She does so quickly and doesn't stand all the way up, so only some of the eggs are visible this time.
-
Happy Easter to Everybirdie
At sunrise, MG and her mate were honking loudly. She covered the eggs with feathers and left to join him for a short time.
She also rolled the eggs at about the same time, and all 6 were visible for just a second or two.

About 10:00 on the rewind MG looked alert, then an intruder tried to land on the nest. She snapped at it and flew off after it. I'm guessing that it was not her mate! Lots of honking for several minutes so she didn't go very far. MG returned to the nest within 10 minutes. She's a capable mom. The eggs look OK. No sign of pips yet.
-
Cold, windy, kinda sleety this morning at N2B. About 8:30 AM, MG left the nest briefly, with lots of honking but not in alarm. Eggs on view and all seem intact. She has been sitting tight since returning.
-
Mother Goose is more restless today than previous. She rolled the eggs at 2:00 and again for a long time at 3:00. Wonder if they are making sounds now that hatch is close, similar to the eaglets. Baby geese are way more developed than eaglets when they hatch, so probably they make sounds. Stay tuned!
-
More egg rolling this afternoon. About 2:30 on rewind, one egg shows a dark splotch, cannot tell if it is a pip or just dirty stain.
-
Two pips at about 9:00 this morning. Yippee! :D

-
Two goslings as the camera goes to night mode. More pips also.

I do believe I counted all 6 on the ground and moving toward water?
P
-
Can I change my count? Looks like the parents are looking for one more before they head out.
Seeing no possible boots on the ground yet.
P
-
OK they swam down the creek and found #6. Big family reunion - But I'd like to see it move around more in the water i.e. swim with the others.
P
-
Last year the crew set up a portable cam and had their laptops across Trout Run from where the nest is so they wouldn't disturb, but could watch.
Glad they made it!!!! :)
-
Oh, Hi Nora Long time no hear from you, even longer since seeing you.
I followed along earlier with today's events. Now waiting for ground reports/updates. One is missing in action again. Hope it's working things out.
Maybe be nice to hear any official reports from those stationed around the hatchery area.
P
-
Cam just showed MG/FG/5 goslings - more importantly there were big clodhopper footprints in the muddy soil at the water's edge. They looked fresh and muddy. Someone must be patrolling looking for proof/evidence of missing child.
P
-
Goslings all on the ground and alive. The Decorah chat banner says the one of the goslings has a leg issue and is with Dr Laura (vet), and the other 5 are safe and sound with Mother and Father Goose in the creek area under N2B.
At 11:00 a goose was on the nest murmuring and poking gently around. Last year, did we learn that the parents know how many eggs/goslings? If that's true, this goose is likely looking for the missing one.
I think they stay "isolated" for a short while before joining the other geese in the area.
Couple pics to share, then I'll check the rewind and videos.
-
Pics from the rewind. Every frame is worth a pic, but that would be a video!
-
Great view of MG flying away from the nest, from the ground camera. But TWO geese flew away, maybe the other was Father Goose, but more likely I think an auntie. In one of the ground views, you can see a wide metal collar around the trunk of the N2B tree, to keep raccoons and snakes from reaching the nest.
Jumping from the nest all within about 10 minutes.
-
Last three to go . . . Amazing, all six jumped from the nest in about 10 - 15 minutes. I think it took much longer last year.
-
Pics of the family on the ground and in the water. Five goslings and one at the vet. And a goose who was checking the nest for the "missing" gosling -- could have been a parent, or an auntie goose.
-
STLbf You're right on about the quicker time this year-last two last year took forever.
Also saw the 3 adult geese at the one time. My thought was that MG and FG were with the little ones - and that the third in the nest was maybe nest shopping for a new pair who are late in getting started?
P
-
Puff, that's a good idea about a goose nest-shopping. We'll see in coming days if the camera stays on at N2B.
It's great to have watched this year's goose reproduction and to have all 6 hatch and survive the leap is pretty remarkable. Hope they all grow to adulthood. But I wonder if the parents will accept #6 when it can be released. Guess we will hear from RRP about that.
OK, back to the eagles at N1. And the turkey vultures in Marshall MO. And the Peregrines at GSB and MSU. And the grackles at DNN, and the North eagles.
-
Maybe not back to N1?
Pair checking out - or - back on N2B?
Are MG and FG thinking about another brood OR is it a new pair? Replay to about 7:15 nest time.
P
-
Thanks Puff/STLbf I was thinking the same about a new family moving in N2B. Especially acceptance of #6 when rehab is over.

Chat says its a new pair and I agree, then I looked it up. Canada Geese raise only one brood each year (bird book). The goslings stay with the parents for weeks and learn to feed, etc.
These two look just like a couple inspecting the real estate for their first home! Geese are VERY vocal.

Geese are very LOUD vocal STL. I also noted how the abandoned feathers were being utilized. No bare spots or yanking pains.
P
-
Geese still puttering around at N2B. Looks weird to me for a goose to be standing on the Skywalk, let alone the nest! But it's a safer nest than one on the ground.
Sad news that gosling #6 didn't live. Amy has a blog explaining its injury during the jump.
-
Morning visits to N2B and creek by the prospective nesting geese.
-
The geese that visited N2B after the hatching/jumping may have moved on. Today the nest looks very bare and empty.
-
Geese made a visit this morning. They were murmuring to each other, I'm sure about the condition of N2B as a possible nesting site.
