Title: Condors
Post by: shep on November 01, 2020, 08:38:23 AM
Endangered condors, California
November 2020
These are fascinating, addicting after while
Explore has 2 condor cams
They operate on solar power so are intermittant
https://explore.org/livecams/condors/california-condor-sanctuary

They should begin pairing up this month or next, displaying, allopreening.

They dont breed til age 5+
Only lay ONE egg
Takes 6 months to fledge

Someone else started 2 condor threads
I added to one - transferring here and starting this new one

The FIRE
Aug 21, 2020   California Condor Sanctuary
3.30 am today the fire took out the cam.

They left the cam on til the fire took it out.
I watched for days as the fire came closer.
We hope the condor chick Iniko survives.
She did!  She is in the zoo safe!

FLUDGE of Iniko
October 16, 2020 Big Sur California
Iniko was forced out of his redwood nest by Ninja, an older male
Mom Redwood Queen chased off Ninja - Iniko is INSIDE, her head is BLACK
The heads dont pink til around age 4 or 5
Even with video I cant tell exactly what happened

Iniko -  born in troubled times
https://explore.org/livecams/condors/california-condor-sanctuary

Iniko and his mother, Redwood Queen #190, survived the fire
Iniko's father, Kingpin #167, has not returned.
October 16 a 6-year-old male condor Ninja #729 moved in on Kingpin's territory and harrassed Iniko, forcing Iniko to leave the nest. Fortunately for Iniko, mother Redwood Queen arrived.
Iniko was nearly six months old and ready to leave the nest anyway.

I took pics off video
Iniko is INSIDE - I labled pic wrong

Iniko is a GIRL!
We can expect courtship displays of pairs in December, maybe earlier.
I think we HAVE seen some on cam lately.
Informative video of the rescue - and more
https://youtu.be/DFnJvQ7DWZQ

Juvie condor heads are black, dont pink til after age 4
The chick doesnt fledge til about 6 months
Iniko was forced from his nest at about 6 months

It was noted she was limping so they captured her and took her to the Los Angeles Zoo.  Her leg has a sprain but has healed and they found out its a GIRL.  She will join a cohort of other juvie condors at the zoo - to be released to the wild later.

Hi Shep!
I had been following the Condors on the news all summer. Sad about daddy. Iniko stayed right in the tree, right?
Were almost all of them taken to a rehab center in Oregon or Washington until fires came there & then moved to Utah to a rehab??
Love these creatures & was glad to see Iniko & mama reunited.
Glad you posted about them!  Thank you!!!

We worried if Iniko died in the fire -
but she stayed up in the tree nest and survived.
Thats a miracle.  Several condors died in that fire which was arson.
They arrested the arsonist.

I know nothing about Utah

Trial by Fire for Condors
2009
Ventana Wildlife Society?s condor restoration efforts in Central California.
Joe Burnett and his colleagues rescued Condors that were trapped in the pen during a fire in 2008. Among these juveniles was 438 female.

June 21, 2008 they faced a major wildfire for the first time. The Fire near Big Sur burned out the pens where the group was holding 8 condors being prepared for release. Burnett and his colleagues helicoptered in to rescue them. The birds survived, though two wild condors perished in the fire. Today, 50 wild birds fly in the areas around Big Sur and the Pinnacles National Monument.

It is important for the older condors to pass knowledge on to the young.  These birds had never flown in the wild. If we had just let them go, they?d  have likey died. We had to run 3 miles from the helicopter to the pens.

I only titled this - CONDORS  - for that reason.
If there are other condor stories - you can post them here.
They're trying to save the species.

TOPA TOPA
Grand Daddy Condor

Betsy ? Explore.org

Condor #1 is TopaTopa, 55 years old, and has fathered 34 condors!

Topa Topa lives at the Los Angeles Zoo?s condor breeding facility, a remote corner of the zoo that is off limits to all but condor staff.
https://www.latimes.com/la-pg-072402condor-photogallery.html

Topa Topa is one of the largest condors in existence, weighing in at 25 lbs! He was the first condor to be taken into captivity back in 1967 and was the foundation of a successful captive breeding program that helped save the species from extinction.
https://www.ventanaws.org/condor652.html

The L.A. Zoo has housed California condors since 1967, when the now legendary Topatopa came to the zoo as a malnourished fledgling rescued from the wild.

We observed our first courtship display between Shadow and Traveler!

Nov 10 we had a Pink Tag day, 6 out of 11 visitors sported pink wing tags

Nov 11-12 overnite dinner drop and Watering Hole pump fixed
The August fire had damaged - plugged it
Condor #663 Junipero watchs the man fix the pump Nov 11
That is a lil too tame!  Actually he turned his back, so he didnt see the man, therefore the man couldnt see him either. 😎

Condor Update-11/20/2020

Nov 19 Recap
Pixchi (966) and Muursh (957) were released and both spent their first night roosting in large pine trees near the release pen. Tich (995) was also released but returned to the pen to roost with Wassuk (968).

Nov 20 morning
The VWS crew opened the door 0645 am PST and both Tich (995) and Wassuk (968) exited.

They all gathered around the carcass outside the pen and were soon joined by Pixchi and Muursh and wild birds 566 and 725.

Now, we will watch as these 4 young condors adjust to life in the wild over the next couple weeks and learn how to fly.  They have some great teachers out there like 725. Our hope is that these 4 condors get in a routine of taking short flights and then returning to the release site every 2-3 days to feed.

Condor lore, breeding age
Cali Condor,  Explore Dec 22
Condors typically reach sexual maturity by 6-8 year old, but some individuals may attempt nesting earlier!
In 2019, #725 successfully produced a chick at the age of 5, #828 is turning 5 next spring!

BREEDING SEASON
January 5, 2021
This is when condors choose their mate.
There is a shortage of females so the girls get their pick

RQ (Redwood Queen) is being seen with Phoenix  among others.
Her mate Kingpin is presumed to have perished in the tragic August Dolan fire.
Her chick Iniko was taken to the zoo and doing well
Poor girl lost it all.

Many humans lost it all in 2020 also.  HORRIBLE year!

This month we celebrate 2 of the newest members of the Big Sur Flock, Xuchen #956 and Muursh #957

Xuchen meaning to get to be first
Muursh meaning to be dark
Xuchen will be two years old on 2/24/2021 as will Muursh on 2/28/2021

Both condors were hatched in captivity at the San Diego Zoo and later transferred to VWS for release in San Simeon, California.  Muursh is #190 Redwood Queen's brother, making him Uncle Muursh to little Iniko.

Redwood Queen ( RQ 190 ) and Phoenix ( white #477 Phoenix ) are officially listed as a pair.

RQ is Iniko's mother.  The father Kingpin is listed as missing after the August fire.  :'(

Redwood Queen
March 3, 2021  Betsy Explore Ventana
Redwood Queen #190 might be flying solo this season. After last year's fire and the loss of her mate, Kingpin. Parents of Iniko at the zoo, to be released this fall.

Appears its normal for RQ to skip a year. 2020 was traumatic for her.
Female condors lay only one egg per nesting attempt and they don't always nest every year. Often, pairs will skip a year in between breeding

Redwood Queen laid an egg
March 5, 2021
Redwood Queen (190, red tag 90) is nesting with Phoenix (477, white tag 77)
RQ and Phoenix are incubating an egg in her old nest Redwood tree.
We suspect they laid the egg approx. 2/26/21, so we anticipate the egg to hatch at the end of April approx. 4/24/21
The natural incubation time for a condor egg is 57-60 days
https://www.ventanaws.org/condor477.html

Things change fast!  2 days ago they thot RQ wouldnt breed this year!   ;D

NOSE BLING - unwanted

BIG SUR Condor 943 Percy has half of a can lodged on his lower beak.

Our current plans are to attempt to recapture 943 ASAP to remove it and hope their is no serious beak damage.  Trapping any wild condor is no easy feat!

HOW could they do it - 2 small helicopters like a roundup?  into a large net?

HATCH WATCH
Apr 25, 2021  Redwood Queen and Phoenix egg eggspected to hatch about April 24th.  We estimate the egg was laid on 2/26.  The 7 other nests in central California are doing well and we expect to have more eggs hatching over the next couple weeks.

Percy, Condor 943 update Apr 19
Percy was recaptured and is recovering at the Pinnacles flight pen after a thorough health exam. The can is now off his lower beak and he suffered no long-term damage. He will be released after he has sufficiently recovered.

 :'( Sad news
July 9, 2021
Kodiak #974 has passed away. His clinical signs were consistent with a condor battling lead poisoning. We thought Kodiak was starting to show signs of recovery but he took a turn for the worse.
https://www.ventanaws.org/condorthreats.html

This is why its so important to switch to nonlead ammunition, it will save the lives of  wildlife.

The crew was able to see chick #1095 this week! #1095 looks to be right on track developmentally and Ferdinand #652 and mom #550 continue to provide excellent, round-the-clock care for their increasingly rambunctious chick.

🎃 San Simeon young waiting freedom  👻
Oct 31, 2021
3 condor young will be released to the wild Tuesday Nov 2

Iniko and 2 others will be released on Dec. 4th
Both releases will be live-streamed

There are 6 condors scheduled for release in San Simeon this year. They include Iniko (1031) and 5 other females: 1011, 1019, 1036, 1038, & 1042
https://youtu.be/1a1z4M80BXg

Redwood Queen daughter #31  Iniko
Iniko received a radio and GPS transmitter and orange wing ID tags upon arrival.  It'd be wonderful if RQ found her daughter again!

We attached radio and GPS transmitters and they can be identified by orange wing I.D tags listing their last two numbers (i.e. 11, 19, 36).

Ventana currently has 10 pre-release condors at San Simeon release pen.  Evidently the remaining 4 to be released in early 2022

Post-release Update
December 6, 2021  ventanaws.org

Dian Fossey (1011), Iniko (1031), and Rachel Carson (1042) were released on December 4th (in that order). We thought Iniko would be the first to go, but Dian made the first leap toward freedom followed quickly by Iniko. Rachel took her time and came out about an hour later. They join condor juvies Jane Goodall, Jan Hamber and Rosalie Barrrow Edge, who were eager to reconnect with their old flight pen pals released in November.

All 3 of the newbies roosted together off the ground their first night. ❤️

In December untagged wild chicks start showing up with mom and dad on the Big Sur cam. The pairs with untagged chicks are

Nomad #574 & Miracle #538 (Chick 1104)
Ferdinand #652 & 550 (Chick 1095) - mate black tag, no name
Amigo #204 & Kodama #646 (Chick 1089)
We believe Junipero #663 with a leg injury is tending to his chick 1077

If you missed the Dec release, you can watch it here-
