Title: 2024 Great Spirit Bluff Falcons
Post by: STLbf on January 17, 2024, 12:06:52 PM
Live cams working this morning as the river freezes over. Flock of eagles hanging around the edge of open water next to the lock, waiting for fish to come to the surface.

Shep, many thanks for GSB history. It will be a good guide for this season.
Enjoyed the river snapshot, STLb. Thanks you two. Take care.

Not much change at GSB today.  Still eagles at the edge of the open water next to the lock.

Q -- Who changes the Forum sections to the new year?  It's time for 2024 here at GSB.

Hi Nora.  :)
I don't know how to "sticky".
And if I opened the thread, I'd put it with the Mississippi Flyway Cam, where it'd would be easier to maintain.

Shep, thanks for the reminder about falcon returning dates!
When the water has been open since the first of the year, there are people fishing from little boats below the locks.  Wonder what they are fishing for?

While some folk await Newman's return, I'm more curious about what I'm assuming is the enlargement of the Lock to double its size to 600 ft., allowing 15 barge "tows" but more importantly to accomodate the larger cruise liners that will be plying their service on the Upper Mississippi from St. Louis to Minneapolis.
Construction is going on now....where that crane is currently located is where the new lock gate will be.  Don't know if the unfrozen river is a boon or a bust as far as the construction goes, but I hope our camera ops are aware and will give more close-up scanning in the future.  The Corps of Engineers has had this in the planning for awhile, but I think covid slowed it down....like it did with everything else.  This is a massive project.  All the locks between the Twin Cities and St. Louis will be enlarged.
Thanks RRP for the service you provide.  My check will be in the mail soon.  ;) :)

I might be ahead of project goals right now, but they are in the future plans.

eburg,
I too enjoy the locks.
I would assume an open river is better for the ACoE.

Right now I am interested in seeing a falcon sighting.
Everyone needs sound ON.
We've seen visitor falcons this early in past years.

Per RRP today!!!
Look who's back at Great Spirit Bluff! While we were watching DNF lay her first egg, Newman was reclaiming his territory. Our camera operators let us know that he's already attracted a female falcon: not surprising given that he's one of the most eligible falcon bachelors around!  Great picture of him with the video!

Watch and listen here:

For what it's worth this is the earliest mention of Lisa that I found for last year.

Me, neither, Phyll, but she was definitely on the large feeding ledge for a while about 8:00 this morning.  There's a place to look up banding numbers and I will check that right now.  . . .  And I got no results, probably my inexperience with the banding lookup.  The link is on the Explore! tab from RRP.   Someone else will know, I'm sure.

I was wondering if there had been any interaction between Newman and the females.  The pic posted by Shep answers that question!
But which female is it this morning in the copulation on the camera housing?
And if they are mating, does that indicate that a pair has been formed?

Title: Re: 2024 Great Spirit Bluff Falcons
Post by: STLbf on February 22, 2024, 12:32:40 PM
The plot thickens at GSB today.  Newman was perched at the nest box about 10:30 this morning, no leg bands so pretty sure it was him.  And then, Lisa 53-W was back, perching on the box and chattering, about 11:00!  Didn't see any of them together on the rewind, but I could have missed an encounter.

I also think one of the peregrines was perching at the top of a tree on the bluff, but too far for a good pic. And Newman was at the overhang of the large feeding ledge, but too dark for a decent pic.

Julie 90-Z has been around today.  See pics from camera housing (8:00) and on the large feeding ledge (8:30).  Note the orange circle on the feeding ledge pic.  That's Newman's beak and toes.  A good guess because there was no scuffling like with a competing female, but I never saw him in a better view.  Julie has been crooning in a very similar way that DNF does on the North nest when it is mating time or asking for food.

There's a mating pic posted here a few days ago.  Don't remember who, but we can both scroll back to find it -- I did, and it was posted by YOU on FEB 20, but doesn't identify the birds.

Even though us watchers may be confused about which falcon is who and where, the great news is that there are enough of them to confuse us!!

Early morning, a banded bird was on the nest box perch, but flew off too fast to read the band.  Hanging around the nest box seems to be a popular activity these days.  Newman, I think, was there about 11:30 AM, appeared to be a bird without bands.
Title: Re: 2024 Great Spirit Bluff Falcons

Title: Re: 2024 Great Spirit Bluff Falcons
Post by: STLbf on February 26, 2024, 01:57:52 PM
RRP doesn't have the budget to band every bird, and it's likely that he came into the area as an adult, not a chick.  That's my guesses.
Same reasons most of the eagles we see are not banded.

Yep who knows where he came from.  Some cliff areas, like I think Lake Superior and probably other places, aren't accessible.  It has to be done at just the right time so they're old enough, but not to the point it's dangerous for the young that will try to exit the nest box too soon if there is  a box.

"Great Spirit Bluff
February 26, 2024: Banded Female Falcon H/34 Kandiyohi - https://youtu.be/RJYZeEJrd7c?si=71-Zo_qw81ahtLpB. This is really interesting. As usual, female falcons are lining up - flying up? - for Newman. But H/34 was seen at the Dubuque Courthouse just a few days ago: roughly 98 miles away as the falcon flies! Lisa was also spotted here today. We'll see who shows up here tomorrow!"

On not banding Newman - yep, he came into the area as an adult. RRP and Midwest Peregrine get most of the falcon nestlings in Minnesota (but not all of them); RRP and Wisconsin Peregrine get most of the falcon nestlings in Wisconsin (but not all of them); RRP gets most but not all of the nestlings in Iowa (for example, we can't rappel the Iowa Statehouse dome to grab those babies); and many states don't have a banding program at all any more or can't reach most of their eyries (Ontario Canada is incredibly rugged terrain and many of those sites would require day-long hikes or a helicopter). So we're going to see more unbanded adults as the species continues to proliferate and find spots we can't reach. It's nice to have a really good camera that picks up Newman's distinctive and apparently incredibly handsome features!

Newman perched at the nest box about 1:00 this afternoon, preening, stretching, bobbing.  A short while later, one was in the box and another flew in for some chattering. One hopped out and away, and a banded bird stayed for just a few moments before also flying away.  Could not read the band.

Meeting up inside the nest box seems to be a thing for Newman and Julie 53-W.  They did it again this morning about 10:00.  Vocalizations and dancing are involved, but not copulation that I saw on the rewind.

On YouTube I saw video posted from RosieanneB, then checked the rewind at the live feed, and there's ANOTHER female peregrine dancing with Newman this afternoon about 4:00.  The band number is 60-E, black over blue.  I tried the database lookup but didn't get any result.
Title: Re: 2024 Great Spirit Bluff Falcons
Post by: STLbf on March 04, 2024, 01:14:41 PM
Lisa 53-W is back on the scene with Newman today.  In the nest box for dancing together, on a branch, on the small and large feeding ledges.  I believe she caught a black bird to eat on the branch about 8:30, and I think Newman brought one as a gift on the ledge about 11:00. On rewind he is barely visible under an overhang as she eats.  At 1:00, she is still perching on the large feeding ledge.  And it's worth the wait to see a mating!

Red-winged blackbirds are migrating back to the area, so prey is plentiful. The males return first.  And the females look totally different, with brown and white stripes all over, easily mistaken for a large sparrow.

Nora, do you know if the location where Hope E-60 was hatched still has a peregrine nest?

Lisa  [for sure] and Newman [I think] had a noisy encounter in the nest box about 11:15 this morning.  He flew away, then she did after a while.  At 12:30 she was eating a RWBB on the large feeding ledge.  Don't know if she caught it or if Newman gifted.

I'm not sure.  I was making a quick check after looking at her info and ran across that, not sure on the peregrine box.  I look more.

Here you go, Nora.  Early morning, lots of chattering and singing between Newman and Lisa (I'm presuming but no band in clear view), then a mating.
They are hanging around and VERY talkative all morning.

Lisa 53-W seen on the large feeding ledge for a couple hours, didn't see her eating, but black feathers underfoot.  Later the cam ops found her on a favorite high branch in the cedar trees towards the lock.

Are we on egg watch here yet?

Shep that's a great pic of the mating scene on the feeding ledge.

Before that, Newman came to the nest box and Lisa 53-W joined him for vocalizations and dancing.  Newman left, Lisa left and had a RWBB on a narrow ledge below the large feeding ledge [See blue arrow in pic].  This is great on the rewind as she tries to hide the carcass in a crevice then flies away with it.  She goes to that branch to perch near the cedars above the locks.  There's a mating there, Newman flies away and Lisa perches for about a hour.  Then to your pic.   Busy birds, these.   ;D

Big fight over territory about 4:30.  There's been an unknown, unbanded bird in the area this afternoon, one with dark feather specks on the upper chest, I'm guessing a female.  It started with two at the nest box, the unknown and probably Lisa, anyway a banded bird.  A smaller bird flew into the box, likely Newman, who vocalized but didn't attack the intruder.  Intruder was pinned belly up by Lisa for several minutes, then was finally able to wriggle loose and flew away.  Holy Moley   :o   >:(
Someone will make a video of the Tuesday afternoon fray.

Here's the female falcon rumble this afternoon at GSB, Lisa wasn't having any of it, sent the other woman packing. Was pretty scary but the loser was able to fly away.  You'll see Newman come into the nest box and watch, according to Amy, the males seldom interfere in female fights.  https://youtu.be/0XqndmIWGMc (https://youtu.be/0XqndmIWGMc)

Rumble describes the ruckus yesterday, and thanks for the added video, pics, and info.

As the color cam returned this morning, Newman and Lisa had a mating on the nest box top.  Shortly after, she cast a pellet -- probably intruder feathers she pulled in the fight.   ;)    At 10 AM, she perched on the small feeding ledge for an hour or so.

Looks to me like Lisa, the fierce defender, is the female for this season, so I'm shortening the pair moniker to N&L.

Lisa really didn't seem to do much of any damage to the unknown.  She didn't even pull that hard on the feathers.  I did notice she had a little fluff in her beak when she was back in the nest box.  Loved the way she held unknown's talons out of the way.  Smart bird.

Nora, for all the squalling and racket during the rumble, we might have expected more injuries.  But lots of creatures fight over territory and most of the action is more like posing and protecting and threatening because the combatants know the danger of injury to themselves.   Probably that's what Peregrines do.

Is there a new camera live here at GSB today?  The posted pics look to me like they are showing views we have not had before.

Wow those views DO look different.

Some females will do a LOT of damage though.  When the female peregrine took King over from the first one to nest there, Mae, she killed Mae.  Bob went up there from his home in Iowa and took her back and gave her a decent burial.  The lobby at King has a stature of Mae.

This is the April 17, 2004 article from the St. Paul paper.  Belinda took over after Mae, so without looking back I'd say Belinda was Breezy's mom.

Birders around the world are mourning a Minnesota matriarch.

Mae, the first peregrine falcon in the world to nest at a power plant, was killed earlier this spring in a territorial battle with another falcon at Xcel Energy Co.’s Allen S. King smokestack in Oak Park Heights.

Since claiming the nest as a young bird 15 years ago, Mae raised a record 37 falcons in the small wood box overlooking the St. Croix River, and her movements were followed daily during the nesting seasons by thousands via the Internet.

Xcel Energy installed a “bird cam” on the smokestack in 1997, and Mae soon became a media darling. Xcel’s Web site, www.xcelenergy.com, is updated with a new photograph every two minutes, and during Mae’s first nesting season, it generated more than 800,000 hits.

Some Mae fans were logged on the day she was killed, believed to be March 25. Diane Gulbrandson of Bloomington said she realized immediately that Mae had received a fatal wound from another falcon named Belinda.

“I have a sense of sadness because she’s gone,” she said. “I loved watching her raise her young. She was obviously a very powerful bird, but at the same time, she was very gentle. You could just see it in the photographs. Here was this huge bird with these tiny chicks, and she was feeding them one at a time and making sure each bird was fed.”

The battle over the King nest box was not unusual, according to Bob Anderson, director of the Raptor Resource Project and overseer of Xcel’s “bird-cam” and nest-box programs.

Mae typically wintered in the King plant area rather than migrating south, but a lack of pigeons last winter caused her to leave the nest box in late October.

“When Mae returned to Minnesota to reclaim it, Belinda was already there, owning it,” Anderson said. “We’ve seen some terrific fighting over nest boxes. We don’t see that intense fighting between birds on the cliffs probably because there are alternative cliffs to go over to and occupy.”

NESTING AT POWER PLANTS
In 1989, the King power plant became the first in the world to put up a nest box for peregrine falcons, which had been devastated by the pesticide DDT and were on the endangered species list.

Power plants are excellent nesting sites because they are near rivers and offer protection from predators. Anderson said power plants around the world now install nest boxes, and the peregrine was taken off the endangered species list in 1999 due in part to those efforts.

The addition of the Web camera at the King plant allowed schoolchildren across the country to track Mae’s movements each spring, said Paul Adelmann, a spokesman for Xcel.

In Seattle, third-graders at Arbor Heights Elementary School learn about falcons each year by watching the “falcon cam” and reading a book about Mae. Teacher Mark Ahlness began tracking Mae during her first year on camera, and his class named Mae’s first two fledglings, Smoke and Prescott. Smoke has been at Xcel’s High Bridge power plant “for the last three years in a row and has ended up being a ‘bird-cam’ star of his own,” he said.

Ahlness said he was shocked by the news of Mae’s death.

“I had just told my class her story,” he said. “They were charmed and very excited, as 8- and 9-year-olds always are. A week later, I had to tell them she had been killed. I had a hard time telling them, to be honest. But we are watching the nest in my classroom, and the kids are ready to watch the new eggs hatch and learn more about falcons. I’ll remember Mae fondly for what she offered us — a model of strength and consistency.”

Students at Andersen Elementary School in Bayport were impressed with Mae’s mothering skills, said third-grade teacher Carolyn Hild. “They knew what a good mom she was and how nurturing she was.

“Every time I go by the smokestack, I look up and think of Mae and her babies,” she said.

PAYING THEIR RESPECTS
Sympathy cards have arrived from as far away as Germany since Mae’s death, said Anderson, who buried her on his Iowa farm.

Juanita Woods, from Columbus, Ohio, said: “All the falcon fans worldwide know about Mae’s death. … They realize that this is nature’s way, but they still mourn her passing.

“The queen is dead. Long live the queen.”

The loss has been particularly hard for Xcel employees.

Employees tracked Mae through the years, said Mark Fritsch, King plant director. Some would bring their children to the plant each spring to watch the banding and naming of Mae’s fledglings. Internet pictures of Mae were broadcast live in the plant’s control room.

“They would record in a book when each new egg was laid, how many there were and when the young were born,” he said.

The “falcon cam” will continue to track Belinda and her five babies, which should hatch in mid-May.

But Mae will be difficult to replace, said Adelmann, the Xcel spokesman. She was arguably the world’s most famous falcon, having been featured in the New York Times and “CBS Evening News.”

“She was the matriarch,” Adelmann said. “Mae absolutely loved living at that plant. When you see the same bird year after year for a decade, you get attached.”

Another visiting female at GSB this morning, I believe.  It's unbanded, larger than Newman (who has been in the nest box most of the time) and has some peachy-rusty feathers on face and breast.  They are talking, not challenging.  Haven't seen Lisa 53-W today.  Just before noon, Newman left the box, she followed, he caught a bird for her. Together on the large feeding ledge, then she returned with a piece to the box camera housing.

I dont like the idea of another falcon fight - or fight w/owl.

A few years ago the James River falcon male had 2 females - 2 nests.
It'd be - um - interesting if one has nest inside box and one nests on RLD under ledge.

I wish GSB a good year.  This is such a great cam!

It's an unusual season for GSB, that's for sure.  Snow overnight as in the general region.  And it looks like Lisa 53-W has returned today, with Newman in and on the nest box, with food gift and mating this afternoon.  Pic of Lisa is not real clear, but band is the right colors, etc.

The young peregrine is a banded bird.  Black = V over Blue = something 9.  Perched on the large feeding ledge about 10:00 this morning, and for a while there was another bird, probably Newman, back under the ledge.  It's feet visible center left in one of the pics here.

IF that's V/89 if could be Poppy from High Bridge in St. Paul hatched 5/27/23.  Hard to tell the first number.  Maybe we'll see it again.

Nora, so this V-?9 is a male??  The plot thickens.  I couldn't get a clear view of the banding numbers at the time of perching on the camera housing just moments ago.  Maybe the watchers at Explore will have better luck.

Whoops, made another try and got a good clear number.  It is V-89.  So, it's Poppy, as you suspected.   And Newman is the bird divebombing to drive Poppy away.

Someone contact Amy please.
We may be disappointed here at GSB -

This morning the Alma cam is on the river - not the nestbox - and its egg time!

Xcel has taken King and High Bridge totally offline. WHY?

Lacrosse bank - we need a cam on the EGGS!!!

A lotta folks pounding their desks today!
====

Well DUH - Electric Outage in several areas due to storms.
Bird cams WOULD NOT take priority over people!

WHO DIS??
April 4

7.45 am  Maybe 15 minutes ago I heard and saw a falcon on th "mating perch" from which Michele always screamed for a mating.

It was NOT a juvie.

But then a juvie came in and landed on roof and the falcon flew away.

Newman began dive bombing the juvie and chased it off.

Please correct my info if its incorrect - but I assume it was an ELIGIBLE female screaming for mating.

I saw this in the GSB group in FaceBook:

"From Explore:

March 29 blog: https://www.raptorresource....
"March 28, 2024: Newman chases off young banded falcon We’ve talked before about how female falcons usually chase/fight other females and males usually chase/fight males. Here’s an impressive example! The young banded falcon is still sporting all-brown plumage, which means he is right around one year old. While I don’t have site-specific information, he comes from Indiana, which means he is 200 miles or more from his natal nest. Good luck, U/09!"

Nora, thanks for the updated info on U/09.  Newman doesn't seem to be fighting with this young adult male.  They even bow to each other in the nest box.  The situation will sort itself out one way or another.  Keep watching this space.   ;)

It seemed like they took turns at the nest box today.  She came early to the rooftop and then perch before going in.  After she left Newman stopped in.  He'd be on the perch looking around and then leave.  She'd come back and then after she left Newman would come.  He did a little scraping once.

This young peregrine might grow up enough this season to mate and lay eggs here with Newman, but time's a-passing, y'all.  They have been in and out of the nest box together and separately all day.  They call and respond, they bow and scrape the gravel, but no food gifts or mating seen on the rewind.

Sigh.   ???

A flying squirrel visits the nestbox regularly.

About 0845 they met at the nest box for a short time and then Newman left.

Things might be heating up between Newman and U-09.  About 6:00 this morning, he brought a black bird (RWBB?) to the nest box and U-09 followed and snatched it, then flew away to eat it on a perching branch (blurry pic).  They have been in and out of the nest box up to noon.

Cam ops found a productive bald eagle nest in a tall tree on the long island across from the GSB box, and a bit farther north.  Closeup view at about 10:30 AM, then a pan out for location (orange circle in pic).

One can hope (Newman and U/09) and cool on the eagle nest.

Late morning, Newman landed on the ground at the bluff top area.  He poked around but not seen eating anything.  U-09 joined him, they had a quick bow, and he flew away.  She stayed for a few minutes, then left also.

Earlier, small birds flying around the small cave entrances in the cliff face.  Some kind of brown swallow I think.  No pic.

These are from this morning (4/15).  She was on the ledge.  She's really pretty.  Anyway then Newman was at the nest box waiting in anticipation and she joined him there.  I thought she actually did more bowing than looking around this time and he was in there the longest.  After Newman departed she did a little scrape.

Looks like Northern Rough-winged Swallow are getting ready to nest in the bluff cavities near the next box.  They are brown above and whitish below, unlike the Tree Swallows seen at the Flyway, which are shiny dark blue above and white below.  Pic included here for reference.

U-09, the young female peregrine is in the area, watching the swallows.

Newman and U-09 in the nest box  and bluff area this morning.  Not seen together, but both in the same places.  Time for eggs has passed them by this year.  Maybe next?

The peregrines at the nest box at Michigan State's Spartan Stadium have hatched 3 if not all 4 of their eggs this week.  Have a look at this stationary camera to see the fluffy white babies grrow up.  Watch on You Tube.

Wild columbine in bloom now at the GSB bluffs for wildflower lovers.
