They included a short segment about this on "The Five" yesterday. The owl looks like a kids stuffed animal :). Never heard of a Saw-whet owl before, but I'll sure be doing some research on them now. Cute little guy.

Shep, This was posted in the "beak" last night too! ;)
Via Bazi...
An updated story from 5 hours ago about Rockefeller, the saw-whet owl, who is at a rehab facility in upstate New York:
https://www.cbc.ca/radio/asithappens/as-it-happens-thursday-edition-1.5808547/tiny-owl-found-unharmed-in-rockefeller-tree-is-a-christmas-miracle-says-rehabilitator-1.5808659 - "Tiny owl found unharmed in Rockefeller tree is a 'Christmas miracle,' says rehabilitator"
Read the whole article for an update on his condition, and status and care, and plans for release this weekend. The story includes this, "Saw-whet owls are nomadic, so Kalish says there's no reason to drive him back to Oneonta. She's planning to release him this weekend in a nearby stretch of pine forest, where he will spend his days hiding in spruce trees and his nights hunting rodents.
'He may look like a cute little Furby, but underneath all that, he's an amazing predator.'"

Ravensbeard Wildlife Center update via Facebook
Hello everyone! Rockefeller is doing very well. He has been moved to an outdoor location so that he can acclimate to the weather. Today we are scouting locations and determining the best timing for his release, which will likely be tomorrow or Monday. We'll be sure to provide you all with an update once we have it.
November 22nd
Hello Everyone! Thank you for your continued support over the past few days, it has been so wonderful to read all of your messages & comments!
We?ve been working hard to ensure that Rockefeller is well taken care of. We always consult with experts & avian veterinarians before the release of a bird, to ensure they have the best chance of reentering the wild. That's what we've been up to these past few days. We will continue to keep you posted, as we know we all want the best for little Rocky.
We are a small non-profit, and your support helps us to be able to continue our work making sure birds like Rockefeller are properly cared for before their return to the wild.
Rockefeller and the rest of the birds here at Ravensbeard thank you for all the support!

"The tiny brown-and-white speckled Saw-whet that inadvertently traveled from Oneonta to Manhattan aboard this year?s Rockefeller Christmas tree was released back into its natural habitat on Tuesday night.
Workers with the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in Saugerties, where Rockefeller has been convalescing, released the bird at dusk into a vast upstate open space with plenty of conifers for the owl to seek safety in.
The wildlife center shared footage of the release, showing the owl flee from a woman?s hand onto a nearby tree, before taking off again.
Workers discovered the feathered creature clinging for her life to the 75-foot-tall Norway spruce shortly after the tree was trucked into Manhattan on Nov. 14.
Adorable photos of the tiny bird wrapped in an orange sweater soon went viral on social media as the heartwarming tale 2020 needed. But wildlife experts previously told The Post that she would have endured a hellish journey to the big city and is lucky to have survived."

Rocky's release was a success! She is a tough little bird and we're happy to see her back in her natural habitat. We are sure that Rocky will feel your love and support through her journey south. #RockefellerOwl Please help us continue our mission to help birds like Rocky for years to come."

Snowy Owls on the Flyway
January 7, 2022
Watchers were thrilled to see two snowy owls on the Flyway yesterday, even if the owl interaction wasn’t friendly. What are snowy owls doing here and why did we see two of them so far from their home? Snowy Owls are nomadic and irruptive migrants and can appear almost anywhere, often in surprising abundance. But we think that their irruptive behavior is driven by a combination of food availability and an unusually successful nesting year.
I am going to go with more survival of young this season!
Snowys have actually been seen in - FLORIDA! Probly born in New York ahahaha

Evidently we will only have one owlet. Seems so odd, I wonder if there is a story.
This storm damaged tree was originally an eagle's nest. Both owls and osprey have used it.

Pip in egg!
From Savannah FB page:
"Woo-hoo!! This is happening!! 'Pipping' is when the chick starts breaking through its shell. The resulting hole is the “pip” that the chick enlarges to finish hatching. This shot shows the female Great Horned Owl returning from a break and settling back down on the egg and we can see the pip clearly. And now we wait -- maybe next time the female gets up there will be an owlet. 21:53 on 2/17"
-
Feb 18
O Linda - yay! She may NOT get up again as the owlet emerges - she may remain brooding it over 24 hours - which of course - is frustrating. hahaha
I see she has a rat to feed her baby, so she knows whats coming
4.30 pm Got a good peek at egg - big hole
We shud have a lil owlet by morning :)

Just saw this posted by Landings Bird Cam - Savanna; hoping that things will still turn out ok:
"Some of you have noticed that we haven't seen the male Great Horned Owl recently or any recent feedings of the owlet. Our partners at Cornell Lab of Ornithology has posted this info for the viewers of the Great Horned Owl cam:
'Advisory: Possible Issue at Owls' Nest'
For the first few weeks post-hatching, the majority of the food at a Great Horned Owl nest is provided by the male owl. Unfortunately, the male owl at the Savannah nest has not been heard or seen since March 2, and the last time the owlet has been seen eating was the morning of March 4.
It’s unclear whether the female owl will be able to catch enough prey to raise the owlet herself, but there are records of single-parent Great Horned Owl nests successfully fledging multiple owlets and we are hopeful that, if the male owl does not return, there could still be a successful nesting season.
We understand if viewers would prefer not to watch until the outcome is clearer. We will continue streaming from the site to discover what the future might hold for the Savannah Great Horned Owl nest."

I've wondered where he is - and why the pantry is empty. He kept it full.
Female was gone a very long time this morning.
I remember the male loved to wait til his mate ate his gift before he flew up to a branch, and hooted bye bye. They're a nicely mated pair.

DAD FEEDS OWLETTA
March 7, 2022 Its EXTREMELY RARE for the male to feed the young. Not unheard of, I've seen it before. I even saw the male try to feed the 3 eggs when the female was away. ;D
About 8 pm March 6 while Mom was gone, Dad dropped off a mouse. Owletta took it from him, tried to swallow it whole but she is too young still. Dad flew off. Hunting must be bad, wonder why. When Mom returned, she fed baby.
4.30 am Mom was gone 5 hours March 6 evening, back for a short time to warm and comfort baby, then left again. I have seen her return twice - no prey.
-
DADs back

6.30 am Dad brings mouse to branch where Mom is waiting.
She GRABS it and flies down to feed Owletta

I'm so very relieved that he is back.

DAD FEEDS FROG
March 8, 2022
3.30 am Dad arrives with what appears to be a frog - something small - Owletta took it and swallowed it whole, then begged confused Dad for more! He stood there for awhile.
He saw she couldnt swallow his mouse yesterday, so brot something smaller. HE LIKES seeing his gifts consumed. :)
