Shep, thanks for the link to the Spartan Stadium falcon cam. You are listed as the forum "starter" so could you correct the name to Michigan State Spartans? We prefer not to be confused with the Univ. of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Happy New Year to you and all the Spartans. Go Green!
-
Hey, Shep, thank you for correcting the name of this forum!!!
Looking forward to a new falcon season here and at Great Spirit Bluff.

Thanks for checking on the MSU peregrine nest box. Is it about March when we can expect to see the falcons return?

April 1, 2022 she had 2 eggs, so they should be appearing any day now. KEEP WATCHING - I use DVR

March 2, 2023
I think there are 2 birds now. Lots of activity today.
But I have NOT seen 2 on cam at the same time.
The one I see is peeping to another
-
Hey Shep, good to see peregrine(s) at the MSU nest box. I'm not sure if it's one bird or two because they weren't together. Also no sound at this location so we have to rely on "lip reading" Ha, Ha.
I think the males return before the females. Might be info in the RRP blogs.
-
THANKS FOR PICS!
YES males return a week or more before the ladies to secure a territory.
-
Shep, it might be just you and me posting about this nest box, so please help me out with the times we use. I calculate the time from the rewind bar and use my local time for Decorah postings because we are in the same time zone. But East Lansing, MI, is an hour later than where I live, and this scheme is the same when we go to Daylight Savings Time.
So which is preferred and most accurate? Do the same as for Decorah? Or add an hour to the calculated time so that this MSU nest box is on its own local time?
Also, if there are MSU peregrine watchers out there, come on, take some pics and post them! :D
-
I use nest time
If cam is eastern I use eastern time
If cam is central or pacific time I *try* to use that time.
Is Michigan eastern or central time?
Some cams are on a line - hahahaha - I may just say dawn or noon or mid morning. OK - cheating but I am doing lots of other things!

March 8, 2023
8 am Falcon shows up. I tried to get a band. All I can see is it appears black over green or blue. No way I can see numbers. Falcons was on roof - all I could see was talons. She / he flew up there from perch.
8.20 am Male - no bands
-
Shep, good to know this is an active peregrine nest box. Today two visitors, neither banded. Guessing that the earlier one (6:30 AM) was male because smaller than the later one (9:00 AM). Different enough in appearance to tell them apart -- rusty breast feathers on the larger one. And the larger bird did a bit of scraping gravel in the nest box.
-
GOOD PICS - THANKS!
The box was very active today

March 10
Well well - got the pair - unbanded

Shep, what a great pic. Looks like a pair ready to use this nest box.

This unbanded pair appears to be defending the box -
judging from what I am seeing
Today is the most time I've seen them spend at the box.

Looks like a pair here at MSU's nest box atop the stadium. They could be cheering on the Spartans in the NCAA. Or getting ready to lay eggs and raise another family.
From earlier query about time zone in Lansing, MI, it is Eastern Daylight Time. I can convert to that easily enough from my Central Daylight Time zone.

EGG
March 24, 2023
-
Awesome to see the first egg at the MSU nest box. The eggshell is very dark red, wonder if that is a sign of what the parents are eating.
In the grand scheme of things, this addition to the peregrine population is probably way more important than the MSU basketball team's loss to KState in overtime yesterday . . . ;)
-
This box produced young in 2022 also you know. ;D
I knew youd be eggcited. hehehee
-
2 EGGs
March 26, 2023
9 am She laid egg 2
Egg 1 - March 24
Egg 2 - March 26
-
Here's a pic of the 2 eggs at MSU, from this morning.
-
Two eggs, with parent peregrine incubating and turning today.
In the pic, you can see what looks like small, black gravel on top of the box. It is flies! Hundreds of them, all around the box. Could be just a hatching and the insects will soon disperse. What do others think?
-
MSU peregrine has laid a third egg!
-
3 EGGs
March 30, 2023
She laid egg 3 Mar 28
Thats great - 3 eggs. I dont recall how many she had in 2022
Egg 1 - March 24
Egg 2 - March 26
Egg 3 - March 28
-
In 2022, the peregrines laid 3 eggs.
All three fledged, all three banded.
See pic from 6-9-22.
Cannot see their numbers.
-
THANKS! :D
-
4 EGGs
March 31, 2023
DAWN She laid egg 4
Thats great - 4 eggs.
Egg 1 - March 24
Egg 2 - March 26
Egg 3 - March 28
Egg 4 - March 30
-
Awesome, four eggs for MSU peregrines.
I can't tell which parent is which unless they are right together, then the male is the smaller bird.
Since last year's hatchlings were banded, we know that this year's parents are not any of them.
Most likely the same adult pair as last year.
-
Early morning at MSU peregrines.
-
Situation looks normal at the MSU nest box this morning. Rain before noon.
-
That is a REALLY NICE pic!
-
Thanks, Shep. I scroll on the rewind until something interesting happens!
About 10:30 this morning, the female came to the nest box for egg duty. The male slowly got up and left. Also a quick view of the eggs as the female settled in.
-
PIP WATCH
April 24, 2023
Eggshells lookin thin ....
Eggs laid March 24 - 30
-
Shep thanks for the heads-up about almost hatching time at MSU.
The geese are hatching today at Decorah's N2B.
-
Changeover from female to male at about 11:30 AM. Male smaller than female. Eggs look OK. Must be getting close to hatching time. Incubation is 29 to 32 days according to AllAboutBirds.com.
-
HATCH!
April 30, 2023
I kept checking and saw nothing til .......
9.15 am Then saw the hatchling!

Awesome, Shep, to see hatchlings at MSU! I'm considering them a birthday present to me (82 today), and will look on the MSU site about making a donation to this very worthy cause.
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY STL!!!!!!!!
-
May 2, 2023
This pair is so cute.
Later in the day yesterday a cold rain lasting all night.
-
Shep, thanks for the birthday greeting.
Two feedings this morning, so the 3 that hatched made it through the night. They can sit up to take food, but not moving around yet. The 4th egg has not hatched; it could be the last one laid, on 3-30, so still might.
-
This pair is good together - nicely matched.
They are particularly beautiful
and a nice looking nestbox
-
This morning the 4th egg hatched! Pip noticed at feeding of the three chicks at daylight. Hatch and parent picking at the eggshell at about 11:00. Another view of newest baby at 11:45. #4 could be called Sparty!
-
Shep, you need to stop pinning threads that aren't RRP threads. Thank you!
Amy
-
Checking on the four falcon hatchlings. The newest one appears to be OK, begging for food like the others.
-
I love catching both parents at the box.
This is a very nice pair.
Some pairs are VERY strange - like Racine and wilmington
-
MSU peregrines appear to be all OK this morning.
-
Feeding at about 6 AM, all four chicks visible and active. I should be calling them eyases!
-
All's well on Sunday morning at the MSU nest box.
-
MSU eyases are about a week old today, and showing a few dark feathers already. Both parents are feeding them, and all babies look good. I wonder if they will get banded this year.
-
Situation looks normal at the MSU nest box. Feeding by both parents, eyases moving around a little and paying more attention to their surroundings each day.
YouTube has a video of DNR persons working with MSU to band last year's babies at about four weeks of age. Hope the same for this year.
-
Feeding the four eyeases, watching them grow, all looks good here.
-
Growing rapidly, plenty of food, great location for creating poop art.
-
No sound here at the MSU nest box, but all looks good. The eyases are beginning to stand up and take real steps.
-
Early feeding from the male parent (I think). Look how big the eyeases have grown. Lots of dark feathers coming in also.
-
Glad you kept up STL
I was offline 10 LONG days! UGH!
DONT USE COX INTERNET!!
-
Shep, glad to have you back. We are so dependent on internet these days!
MSU little ones are developing fast. See rewind or pics for wingercizing this morning.
-
Monday morning finds the 4 eyases OK. And one parent in view.
-
MSU banding completed this morning. Camera off briefly during the procedure. Looks like black 71 over blue R on left leg of the one that I could see. There will be a listing somewhere soon. Awesome.
The parents don't seem too upset, with food brought to the nest box soon after. A mourning dove -- pink legs, gray feathers, few black spots.
-
Another nice day at MSU. Eyases got fed, and are stumping around in the nest box.
-
Parent on watch at this nest box overnight.
-
Spartan eyases continue to grow and develop "big kid" feathers.
-
One eyas can perch on the edge of the nest box this afternoon. That's a big step in more ways than one!
In the pic you can see another chick trying to balance on one foot while scratching its head with the other.
Some serious wing stretching and flapping also, but no pic this time.
-
Daily growth charts on a steep curve up!
-
Couldn't resist posting this pic from MSU.
-
Eyase perching on the side edge of the box rail. Might be the same on on each side about an hour apart, or two different ones. Must check on how long until fledging expected here, normal fledging that is, not an accidental slip. These eyases are just starting to wingersize and hop rapidly across the crowded box.
AllAboutBirds.com says the fledging is in 35 - 42 days from hatch. So, hatching May 1 - 4 (ish), and fledge expected about June 6 - 15. Or so.
-
Was I ever wrong about fledging date!!! Two were gone some time yesterday, and I totally missed it. By the time I looked at the rewind today, only a few hours of dark were available and only two were left in the nest box. They are Blue band S over Black band 65 and 66, on left legs. From feathering, I'm guessing that #65 is the youngest because the most white baby feathers.
#66 made the jump at about 7:00 AM. #65 isn't quite ready, and a parent dropped off lunch about 12:30. I think it was the female (larger) and she didn't stay at the box. A few minutes later, another parent stopped by and looked for all the world like "Where's everybirdie?" I'd say this was the male.
Have not see the fledglings, and this camera does not move. So good luck to all, fly high, and have great lives as soaring Spartans. ;D
-
One eyas still in the nest box this morning.
-
One still here as of 4:30 this afternoon. On quick rewind scan, I did not see any feeding. Could be the parents don't feed to encourage fledging. Don't you wonder if the others are just off-camera?
-
Today is final fledge day for the last of the four eyases at Spartan Stadium. Early, about 6:00, here are a few pics. The actual fledge was accidental, loss of balance and not able to recover. It's a short drop to the roof, but camera doesn't move and there's no sound, so we can only guess that this one is OK.
The RRP banding group at Great Spirit Bluff places bands on its eyases, and also names them! I believe that the property owner's children do the naming, but could be wrong about that. Visit the GSB live site and RRP's forum for more information and to see the list of names and band numbers for 2023.
I will check in now and then to see if the camera stays on and if any peregrines visit the MSU nest box in the off-season. If someone has info about the banding for these peregrines, please post it here.
-
WE ARE LIVE
WITH SOUND!
https://youtu.be/8zpv33K7SNo
-
Shep, thanks for the note about Spartan Stadium's camera going live. No peregrines appeared in a quick review of the rewind so far today.
-
Peregrine visited the nest box at MSU stadium today at about noon [1:00 Michigan time]. Unbanded. Chattering and marching around. Good to see.
-
March 10, 2024
Dawn - Falcon chupping inside box. Dont see another one.
O great - thanks stl!
I check every day
-
Shep, I have a quick look most days, too. Guessing that it's a male peregrine checking out the box. Seems smallish like the males are, but can't really tell without another bird to compare. Chupping is exactly the main sounds it makes as it marches around inside. In and out quiickly.
-
Beautiful male inside Sonday.
In Racine the male goes in and chups to call female inside.

-
About 3:00 this afternoon, the male came to the nest box, chupping to call a female, who followed him, perching , then going inside. The male left and the female (bigger) made a couple of scraping areas in the gravel before she flew away.
-
Two different peregrines have been visiting the nest box today, but not at the same time that I saw on the rewind.
-
March 16, 2024
bcaw caught a pair here.
Is one a yearling?
GSB females fought for that nestbox.
I hope we dont have a fight here.

Today I saw one inside for awhile.
Stay tooned

EGG :)
March 27, 2024
6 am There she is with an egg she just laid!
-
Shep, watching success at MSU! The female came to the nest box before dawn and laid the egg shortly after. Awesome!
Good to know that the male is around, too.
-
:) I knew you'd be happy!
-
Thanks Shep! MSU is my all-time favorite university even though I did not graduate from there. Gotta find a Spartan emoji.
The male and female are taking turns sitting on the egg today. Very eggciting! :D

2 EGGs :)
March 30, 2024
Late yesterday she laid egg 2
March 27
March 29
-
Shep, cute Spartan emoji! Also for second egg date. See pic from this morning. Female out and twittering off camera which might have been mating. The male came into the box shortly after.
And I found an "official" Spartan logo in downloadable clipart.
-
At about 4:15 this afternoon, the female peregrine left the nest box, and about 5 minutes later, the male returned to the eggs, still only 2.
-
3 EGGs
April 1, 2024
Looked like she laid egg 3 just after midnight.
March 27
March 29
April 1
-
Yes, three eggs now at the MSU nest box. Awesome. I post times that are as hour earlier where I live, so they are very approximate. The new egg was visible on the rewind at about 2:00 this morning, and that's the female in the nest box.
-
Fourth egg laid this morning, between 9 and 10 (or so). Cold and windy and the parents are changing places fairly often to keep the eggs and themselves warm.
-
4 EGGS
April 3, 2024
March 27
March 29
April 1
April 3
Thanks STL - I was gone!
-
Four eggs seems to be a full set for the peregrines. We will see! No pics from me today -- things look totally normal at the MSU nest box.
-
3 falcons I watch have each laid 5 eggs - rare.
We'll see here . . . .
-
Good video of the male coming in to incubate the four eggs. He is smaller than the female, and he has difficulty getting his body over all of the eggs. Watch on the rewind about 9:00 AM to see how persistence pays off.
-
Rainy, chilly today, and the Spartan peregrines are taking care of business.
The school motto "Spartans Will" applies to its nesting population!
-
Everything looks OK at the Spartan Peregrine nest box. Eggs take 29 to 32 days until hatching.
First egg March 27, fourth egg April 3. So maybe the first week of May.
-
Changeover at the Spartan nest box about 8:30 AM. Everything looks good here.

Things look OK at the Spartan Stadium nest box today. Pic of the female rolling the four eggs.

Saturday and all is well at the Spartan Stadium nest box.

Nope - no hatch dawn Apr 29

-
Shep, the eggs look intact this morning, too. AllAboutBirds says incubation is 29 to 32 days, so hatching should be soon. I'd love it if one hatches today -- it's my birthday!
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY STL!
-
Thanks, Shep! :D
-
Happy Birthday, STL! I hope you had a great day.
-
May 3, 2024 RAINING, LIGHTNING
At dawn I saw the eggs.
2 of them look like hatch by noon today.
I saw flashing - its lightning flashing on the raindrops. WOW!
Its wet inside box - NOT good for new hatch young!
;D
-
LindaM, thanks for the birthday card. What a treat to have a peregrine card!
Mid-morning today, light rain, pics of the changeover from Sparty Dad to Sparty Mom. The 4 eggs looked un-pipped to me, but I'll definitely check earlier on the rewind, and later, too.
At about noon, the eggs were in view, no obvious pips. Won't be very long, though.
